The piano is my main instrument, yet writing piano concertos is something I’ve largely avoided until now. One piece, A Kind of Standoff (2006), for piano and percussion quintet, is a sort of piano concerto, but a rather informal one. A chamber piece that doesn’t feel like a chamber piece due to the nature of its performing forces.

A History of Violence is a proper piano concerto, and a rather large one at that. It takes as inspiration the very athletic and, well, violent concertos by early 20th century virtuoso pianist composers like Bartok, Prokofiev, Messiaen and, a generation or two earlier, Brahms. That violent athleticism here serves as a symbol for abusive violence.

“Violent Tendencies”, the first movement, is an unrelenting portrayal of tension. The only release comes in the middle, with a theme that will return several times throughout the concerto. It is, however, a tense calm that quickly gives way to violence.

“Romance by Gaslight” is a portrayal of the concept of gaslighting, the process by which an abusive person (or persons) engages in lies to convince another that they are losing their mind. The movement, a kind of lose set of variations, presents a theme in the piano that is always contradicted and changed in the ensemble. Ultimately, the soloist is left dejected as the “calm” music of the first movement makes an abrupt appearance at the end of the movement.

“Rage Forsaken,” modeled in part on the final of Brahm’s first Piano Concerto, is a “darkly peppy” dance towards some form of healing. The first movement’s “calm” music receives an unhinged treatment that threatens to overcome the movement’s narrative. Only through a resplendent cadenza accompanied by bell sounds from the ensemble is a sense of catharsis accomplished. The soloist then dances to the end.

A History of Violence is dedicated to Ellen Elder (an old friend and classmate who has chomped at the bit for this piece for some time now) and Thomas McCauley, who led the consortium for its commission. I am indebted to them both for allowing me to let this very personal piece out into the world.
