Program Note

In It Together is the second part of Show Offs!, a cycle of four pieces commenting on the tradition and affectations of the concerto genre. This work takes as its model the concerto grosso genre popular during the high Baroque era in Europe. It is as true a concerto grosso as can be written during the 21st century as the solo group, a quartet of saxophones, also performs as part of the larger ensemble. Their solo role being complementary to the rest of the group. In It Together also concerns itself with notions of teamwork, community and solidarity. The first movement, “Bread and Roses,” takes its name from a phrase popular in early 20th century American labor movements. The second movement is a more abstract rumination on a specific piece: J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto no. 3. That piece famously has no actual slow movement. That number consists of a single cadence that awkwardly connects the two full movements of the concerto. Here, that cadence is expanded into a seven minute piece. A single gesture stretched to its limit. The final movement, “Unfamiliar Canons,” has a double meaning. Most of the material in it is, in keeping with my Baroque models, highly contrapuntal and canonic. But the notion of THE CANON of so-called “classical” music is also on my mind. Tied, losely, to the ideas of solidarity and community, its “unfamiliar canons” are those of other people whose voices we are beginning to welcome into the tent of “western classical music.” Thus making an unfamiliar canon by refreshing the old, familiar one. In It Together was written in the winter and spring of 2022 in Laurel, Maryland and St. Louis, Missouri. It is dedicated to Thomas McCauley, who not only led the consortium to commission this piece, but has been an ardent supporter and champion of my music. Thank you, Tom!
