Positive Community Impacts In June, I had the pleasure of participating in the Arlington Chamber’s annual State of the County & Public Safety Awards program. We honored our public safety personnel and first responders who have exemplified extraordinary heroic actions and exceptional performance of their duties. Honorees are from Arlington County’s Fire Department, Police Department, Office of Public Safety Communications and Emergency Management, and Office of the Sheriff.

It was a humbling experience listening to the stories of the winners who received awards. They are all brave men and women who put their lives on the line to protect and serve. Their stories were impressive. Some were life threatening; others exemplified acts of true selflessness, courage, and drive to handle emergency situations and tough issues to ensure the safety of the Arlington public. I can’t speak more highly of this impressive group of individuals.

Prior to the presentation of the awards, the program opened with a “State of the County” speech by Katie Cristol, Arlington County Board Chair. Over 140 attendees were provided updates by Katie that included the highlights of the economic development status of Arlington County. Her participation and speech aligned perfectly with one of the Chamber’s four pillars – Government Affairs and Advocacy.

In fact, the Chamber recently sent two letters on behalf of our members that focused on two key topics, one of which Katie addressed. In the first letter, the Chamber encouraged the US Department of Transportation to grant $300 million to expand rail capacity over Long Bridge. This project will grow the existing two-track bridge into a four-track corridor, providing additional long-term capacity for the growing intercity passenger rail and commuter rail services between the Northeast Corridor, Virginia, and points south in North Carolina and beyond.

The second letter to the Department of Community Planning, Housing, and Development communicated the Chamber’s support for the goals of the County’s “Missing Middle Housing Study.” However, the letter urged additional flexibility on standards to enable more missing middle homes to be built. Katie spoke at length during her speech about the need for more missing middle housing.

To come full circle, let’s hope the findings and recommendations of the Missing Middle Housing Study, together with the support of Katie Cristol and the County Board, and the Chamber’s letter of support, have a positive impact. We need to construct more missing middle homes in our growing and diverse county. Our well-deserving public safety personnel and first responders would likely be direct beneficiaries of this important initiative.

Thanks to all of those who attended this event to honor our first responders, and thanks again to Katie for taking the time to be with us and share her important message.

Governor Youngkin Roundtable

On June 24, the Chamber hosted a business roundtable with Governor Glenn Youngkin in partnership with the Alexandria and Northern Virginia Black Chambers of Commerce. The event featured a reverse town-hall format with Governor Youngkin and Secretary of Commerce and Trade Caren Merrick asking questions of the business leaders in attendance. Topics of discussion included what workforce solutions the businesses would like to see, and what the administration can do to foster greater collaboration with Virginia’s business community.

Chamber Supports Increasing Housing Diversity

Arlington County released Phase Two of its Missing Middle Housing Study, and County Staff is taking feedback prior to any County Board consideration. The Study allows any lot zoned for single-family detached homes to be redeveloped with up to eight units, provided that the resulting building meets all of the existing development standards for single-family housing. This represents a significant opportunity to bring a range of housing types to areas that have been out of reach for many for a long Missing Middle Housing Study time. However, many of the applicable standards would constrain the ability of builders to add less expensive units. The Chamber wrote a letter to the County supporting the goals of the Study, but urging more flexibility on standards to enable more Missing Middle units to be constructed, especially those units that are more likely to be more affordable.

Chamber Supports Expanding Long Bridge

Long Bridge is the two-track rail bridge across the Potomac River, which has become a bottleneck for trains moving through the region. Virginia has been working on an expansion of the bridge to four tracks. This would allow for more tracks in Virginia, enabling a major increase in both Amtrak and VRE service. The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority is applying for a $300 million federal grant, and the Chamber wrote a letter to the US Department of Transportation in support of that funding.

Chamber Calls for Higher Density in Courthouse West

For several years, Arlington County has been considering a General Land Use Plan study that would allow for a mixed-use building in Courthouse West. CRC Companies is hoping to build their building at 16 stories tall, which would fit well in an area that is within a half-mile of two metro stops and is within a very walkable neighborhood, but there is concern that the County might impose a lower cap instead. The Chamber testified at a meeting of the County’s Long Range Planning Committee (LRPC) in support of the higher density cap, as did many other speakers, and we are hopeful that the LRPC will approve the higher density.

Chamber Supports Funding the Second Entrance to the Ballston Metro

Arlington County has prioritized the construction of a second entrance to the Ballston Metro on Glebe Road in its regional funding requests, requesting funding for only that project. This is a critical project for businesses in Ballston, which the Chamber has long supported. Recently, we wrote letters to the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority and the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission in support of granting Arlington’s full request for funding of this project, and encouraged our members to weigh in with their support as well.

On June 14, the Arlington Chamber of Commerce held the State of the County & Public Safety Awards, which recognized Arlington’s economic innovations, the community’s future, and those who make the area a great place to live and work. Arlington County Board Chair Katie Cristol gave an address highlighting Arlington’s economic status, and the Chamber honored public safety personnel and Arlington County Sheriff’s Office first responders from Arlington County’s Police Award Winners Department, Fire Department, Department of Public Safety Communications and Emergency Management, and Sheriff’s Office who have exemplified heroic actions and exceptional performance of their duties.

The annual event was held as a webinar with a catered breakfast provided to 100 first responders and public safety personnel through the support of event sponsorships and registrations. The event was emceed by ABC7/WJLA’s Victoria Sanchez.

Katie Cristol’s State of the County Address touched on Arlington’s economy and its challenges, but Thank you to our Sponsors Master Police Officer Tara Crider also its major transformations such as the growth Grand Sponsor of the technology sector, recent transportation investments, the Arlington housing market, and the importance of the health care and public safety sectors. After her address, she answered questions on a number of issues relevant to the business community.

Award Sponsors Following the State of the County address, awards were presented to honor Arlington County’s public safety personnel and first responders. Thirteen honorees were recognized for their courageous, and often life-saving, actions in the line of duty and beyond.

Among the honorees was Firefighter/Paramedic Jeremy Tate who received the Valor Award for his heroic acts, on July 28, 2021, when Arlington County Fire Department Units were dispatched to a construction site, where a heavy machine operator who was working at the bottom of the excavation site, had gone into cardiac arrest.

It was determined that the easiest, safest, and quickest way to remove the patient from the excavation site was by utilizing the site’s tower crane and the Arlington County Fire Department’s stokes basket. While harnessed to the basket with the patient, suspended from the tower crane, Tate monitored the Lucas Device that was providing continuous chest compressions while also ventilating the patient via a bag valve mask. As they were lifted from the construction site, the patient regained a pulse and was safely transferred to the ambulance. In the ambulance, a pulse was maintained the entire transport and care was transferred to ER staff for further treatment. Congratulations to all of this year’s honorees, and thank you for your service to the Arlington community.

AES Opens Spotsylvania Solar Energy Center

AES’s Spotsylvania Solar Energy Center is a significant economic contribution to Virginia. The new center is a landmark project building the clean energy economy.

The electricity generated by the center will benefit leading Virginia companies and institutions in the technology, e-commerce, and higher education sectors. It also strengthens Virginia’s position as an attractive market for companies to procure clean energy while supporting both the Commonwealth’s and the Biden administration’s decarbonization goals.

Founder Inducted Into the Fairfax County Public Schools Hall of Fame

Educate Fairfax inducted David Guernsey, CEO of Guernsey Inc., along with seven other nominees, into the Fairfax County Public Schools Hall of Fame on May 4. The hall honors distinguished alumni of Fairfax County Public Schools, one of the largest school systems in the country.
