Boeing Moving Defense Headquarters to Crystal City The Boeing Company announced recently that it is moving its Defense, Space and Security unit from the St. Louis suburbs to Crystal City. The relocation, which will be complete by January 3, will put the unit's leadership in closer proximity to federal customers and decision-makers. Initially, about a dozen senior leaders — including Leanne Caret, the division's CEO and a 28-year Boeing veteran — will move to the company's building near the Pentagon, on 929 Long Bridge Drive.

In the next couple of years, about 50 support staff positions will relocate to Crystal City. Currently, about 3,000 Boeing employees work in the D.C. area. Of that total, about 2,000 are in Virginia, and a "few hundred" are based in Arlington County.

Boeing is involved in several major defense and space programs, including the construction of the next-generation refueling tanker and the new Air Force.

A-SPAN Recognized to Highlight Expanded Health Care Access in Northern Virginia On December 16, A-SPAN was recognized by CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst) as an innovative community health partner at a check presentation. The celebration and check presentation reaffirms A-SPAN’s commitment to Arlington County and its innovative community health initiatives, including A-SPAN’s enhanced nursing programs insupport of Arlington’s homeless neighbors.

CareFirst representatives Maria Tildon, Senior Vice President, Public Policy and Community Affairs, and Julie Wagner, Vice President, Community Affairs presented A-SPAN with a $50,000 check so that the organization may further its enhancements to health care access and medical respite program at the Homeless Services Center.

A-SPAN will work to expand health system access, improving the health of Arlington County’s most vulnerable population, street homeless individuals and veterans.

A-SPAN’s Homeless Services Center combines year-round shelter with nursing services and a medical respite program managed by a full-time nurse practitioner.

Arlington Community Foundation Awards Nearly $100,000 to 26 Nonprofit Organizations and Schools The Arlington Community Foundation’s Board of Trustees recently approved grant awards totaling $97,794 to 26 nonprofit organizations and schools, which include many members of the Arlington Chamber, through its Homelessness Prevention – Looking toward Tomorrow, Fund for Intellectual Disabilities/Developmental Disabilities (ID/ DD) and Arlington Education Fund grant programs. These grant awards will broadly benefit the Arlington community through programs that serve a wide cross section of our community.

This fall’s Arlington Education Fund grants make possible curriculum enhancements including an after-school creative problem solving lab for English language-learners and environmental education for students in Extended Day programs through gardening activities. The Homelessness Prevention grants will support such efforts as vocational training for recently rehoused formerly homeless individuals and same-day financial assistance for families facing the threat of homelessness. Funds for ID/DD grants, meanwhile, will support programs that provide empowerment for Arlingtonians with Intellectual Disabilities or Developmental Disabilities through career readiness or community engagement.

Wanda L. Pierce, Executive Director of Arlington Community Foundation, noted, “The grants awarded this year reflect the work of exceptional nonprofits and educators in the Arlington community and the commitment of the Arlington Community Foundation to support their work. Our newest competitive grant program through the Fund for ID/DD is the latest example of how the Foundation helps donors support the most impactful efforts in the areas that they care about the most.”

MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY

Marymount to be Honored by World Affairs Council The World Affairs Council of Washington, D.C., will honor Marymount University with its Educator of the Year Award at the annual Global Education HONORS: Gala on March 29. The award, which recognizes the university’s commitment to global education, will be accepted by Marymount President Matthew D. Shank.

“It is a tremendous honor for, and testament to, our dedicated faculty, staff and students who strive daily to achieve the values of our vision that include intellectual curiosity, service to others and global perspective,” Dr. Shank said.

Marymount has students from 66 countries. International students make up 12 percent of its student body. Another way Marymount helps its students develop a global perspective – one of the three Common Ground tenets mentioned by Dr. Shank – is by offering a wide variety of study abroad opportunities. The school’s popular Center for Global Education reports that during the 2014-15 academic year, MU students studied, volunteered and interned abroad in 38 countries. In addition, it offered 22 short-term faculty-led programs to 18 countries.

In addition, U.S. News & World Report ranked Marymount second for ethnic diversity among Regional Universities in the South for 2017, a list that identifies colleges where students are most likely to encounter undergraduates from racial or ethnic groups different from their own.

President's Award - Todd Ihrig of H.D. Vest Investment Services The prestigious President's Award, sponsored by 395 Express Lanes, was presented to Todd Ihrig of H.D. Vest Investments. Todd is the first member in the history of the Arlington Chamber to receive this honor twice, having first received this honor in 1999. He has been a member of the Chamber for 17 years, and is active in other community-service organizations, including service as Board Chair of the A-SPAN. The sports pub has been a high level sponsor for the Chamber, serving as co-grand sponsor of the Gala, as well as a sponsor of the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) and Valor Awards. Crystal City Sports Pub provides in kind support, including hosting a Business After Business and a Board of Directors meeting. John is an active member of the Board of Directors, where he generously contributes his time, and often refers prospective members to the Chamber. Committee of the Year Award - Community Action Committee The Committee of the Year Award, sponsored by Argosy University, was presented to the Community Action Committee, co-chaired by Linda Kelleher of Culpepper Garden and Meg Rapelye of Phoenix Bikes. The Community Action Committee raises the business community's awareness of nonprofit organizations by connecting Chamber business members with more than 90 nonprofit members. This year, members organized and implemented three nonprofit education forums that provided opportunities to create meaningful partnerships between Arlington’s nonprofit and businesses. This group annually produces Volunteer Arlington Day, which this year attracted over 180 volunteers serving 17 nonprofit sites.

Your Chamber in the Community In many ways, the success of Arlington is directly tied to the success of its business community, and the success of the Arlington Chamber is directly tied to its membership base. This is why the Chamber's Directors, staff and members are dedicated to supporting community events and happenings. Below are a few highlights of the events our staff and Board members participated in on behalf of the Chamber.

November 15 – Kate Bates attended a wine tasting hosted by the Leadership Center for Excellence.

December 3 – Mike Rosenow attended in the Arthritis Foundation’s Jingle Bell Run. December 5 – Mike Rosenow spoke at a luncheon held by the Art Institute of Washington, which recognized the school’s Honor Roll students for their hard work and success this semester.

December 7 – Mike Rosenow attended the Bisnow State of Arlington and Alexandria County event, featuring presenters from the Ballston, Crystal City, and Rosslyn BIDs and Victor Hoskins of Arlington Economic Development. The “Future of Arlington County” panel was moderated by Walsh, Colucci, Lubeley & Walsh PC and featured Monday Properties, The Shooshan Company, and Forest City.

The Chamber would like to thank everyone that participated in our #ShopARL Social Media Contest! We saw a ton of great posts throughout this fun competition that showcased many of the great Chamber member businesses, while encouraging people across the community to support local business.

The winner of the #ShopARL Social Media Contest is Karen Bate of KB Concepts PR! Karen posted a number of photos on Facebook and Instagram over the course of the competition at Chamber events and while working with other member businesses. We appreciate Karen's commitment to promoting Arlington business and are proud to reward her as the winner of this year's competition! As the prize, Karen will get to choose between free admission to every 2017 Business After Business or one year of free advertising on the Chamber's website.

We ask this question in jest, since it is clear on so many levels that individuals of all ages, organizations of all types, and businesses of all sizes truly do care in Arlington County! In the short time since the Leadership Center for Excellence was awarded the contract to manage Volunteer Arlington, it has been exciting and inspiring to meet with people and groups who are already making such a difference in this community.

Volunteerism, the practice of sharing one’s time and talent with worthwhile activities, is a win/win for all involved. In addition to a need being filled or justice being served, those who have ever entered that magical space knows that hearts can be changed and filled from putting someone else before we put ourselves. Lives and communities can be transformed in these moments of both giving and receiving.

At Volunteer Arlington, we want to serve as a “hub” in connecting caring volunteers with the numerous and ever-changing opportunities that are available.

The volunteer movement is already alive and well in Arlington! But our job will not be done until all are invited and have the resources to be a part of the spirit of volunteerism! We invite you to visit our new website, volunteer.leadercenter.org, which is a Volunteer Management tool allowing individuals and groups to browse our partner organizations and sign up for opportunities that are of interest and work with their individual schedule. We know that there are many caring people who want to help, but they might not know where to start their search. We genuinely hope you start with us!

Leadership Center for Excellence, an outgrowth of Leadership Arlington, was awarded the contract for Volunteer Arlington by the Arlington County Government in June of 2016. Volunteer Arlington connects individuals, groups, nonprofits and businesses in an effort to promote volunteerism.

CHAMBER TRAVEL PROGRAM

The Arlington Chamber Commerce is excited to partner with Chamber Explorations and the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce to send travelers on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to explore Cuba, a country where time has stood still. From May 17-21, 2017, participants can travel to Cuba with business colleagues, family, and community members.

Cuba Getaway travelers will visit sights such as Ernest Hemingway's farm, the Museum of the Revolution, and a Havana cigar factory. Travelers will also have the opportunity to meet with the local Old Style Car Club owners and learn why Havana's streets are filled with vintage American automobiles and what it takes to keep them on the road.

6 Weeks Supporting Youth Entrepreneurship As 2016 draws to a close and we welcome another year, many of you may be thinking of New Year’s resolutions.

Perhaps your resolution is to work out more, eat less junk food, or even check off an item on your bucket list. However, if your resolution is to give back to your community, then a wonderful opportunity to do so is by supporting youth entrepreneur development by becoming a mentor for students in our Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!), a 30 week after school program where middle and high school students launch their own business.

The Arlington Chamber’s YEA! program is looking for community oriented business leaders to support the future business leaders of Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) Class of 2017 tomorrow to mentor one-on-one once a week for 90 minutes. As a mentor for YEA!, you will directly impact the life of a middle and high school student seeking to start their own business. Not only will you provide them feedback on their business plan and concept, but you will also help them prepare for the YEA! Investor Panel Event on March 30 by coaching them through developing a winning investor panel presentation.

Many mentors that have volunteered in years past have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and have continued their relationship with their mentee once the program ends. The dates for the mentor visits are: • January 11 from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

• January 18 from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

• January 25 from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

• February 1 from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

The Arlington Chamber spoke out against the Arlington County Board's passage of the "second signature" amendment, which requires a second authorization in order to remove vehicles that are illegally parked on private property. Despite efforts by the Chamber and opposition by people across the business community, the amendment was approved by the Board in December.

The Chamber took decided action to urge the Board to reject the amendment, with Chamber President & CEO Kate Bates testifying twice before the Arlington County Board in opposition to the second signature requirement. The Chamber also wrote numerous letters to the County Board, explaining how the costly, burdensome second signature requirement would hamper the ability of businesses to keep parking areas clear and available to their employees, visitors, and customers and would deteriorate the level of service provided to businesses by towing contractors. In addition, the Chamber held a number of meeting with County Board members, County staff, and relevant stakeholders.

The Chamber will continue to push back against the second signature requirement, while working towards a practical, fair solution both locally and in Richmond to protect and empower Arlington businesses.

Arlington Premiere Honors New and Growing Businesses

As many as two hundred members of Arlington’s business community were on hand to celebrate the County’s business environment and honor new companies at Arlington Premiere, a special networking reception from Arlington Economic Development designed to honor new businesses in the County and provide them with the opportunity to meet and network with other business leaders and community organizations and resources throughout Arlington. The reception, held at startup incubator 1776 in Crystal City, was sponsored by the Crystal City BID and Arlington Magazine. As many as 60 new businesses in Arlington were represented at the event.

The evening was also a celebration of Arlington business success – particularly for fast-growing companies. AED honored the “Arlington Fast Four” – the fastest-growing companies in the County in several revenue categories.

Clarendon retail startup Nicecream Factory, information management consulting company Enterprise Knowledge, Ballston software company Convoke and Ballston-based Deep Learning Analytics (a repeat winner from 2015) were all chosen as Arlington’s Fastest Growing Companies.

Arlington Premiere is presented twice a year by AED to honor and welcome Arlington’s newest members of the business community and to offer those new business owners the chance to learn about the many resources and opportunities available to them in Arlington.
