LCE Welcomes 30 Young Professionals to Membership

Leadership Center for Excellence welcomed its newest class of the Young Professionals Program as it gathered for the first time at a day-long retreat. Bean, Kinney & Korman, PC hosted the launch session for this four-month program that focuses on civic and philanthropic awareness to promote a deeper level of community engagement throughout the DC metro region. 30 participants, including the Chamber's Hannah Dannenfelser, were selected to engage in the eleventh session of this program for fast-track leaders in the region.

"Our Young Professionals Program, offered in the Fall and Spring, provides a launchpad for up-and-coming leaders to expand their leadership footprint in our region," says Liz Nohra, Chief Operating Officer at Leadership Center for Excellence. "We provide training on essential skills necessary for both professional and personal leadership. These young professionals also connect with other leaders in their peer group as well as established leaders from the private, public and nonprofit sectors. It's our hope that this program results in retention of young leaders in our region who will mold the future of our community."

AIM Offers Training, Production, and Programs

Arlington Independent Media (AIM) has served the Arlington community for 35 years by empowering people to become informed and skilled producers of news, information, and entertainment. AIM is widely known as a leader in the field of community media, having won 30 national awards for its programming. Since 1982, more than 10,000 people have been trained at the AIM facility and more than 15,000 programs have been produced. The programs and services offered by AIM directly serve the needs and interests of the Arlington community. The organization has expanded both its facilities and programs over the years to include extensive youth programming, advanced instruction for adults, and additional media channels such as the web and broadcast radio.

NONPROFIT SPOTLIGHT

In today’s world of highly biased reporting, “fake news” sources and celebrity-driven, lowest common denominator programming, there is a greater than ever need in our community for a noncommercial, independent source of radio and television news, information, art, entertainment, and culture. Today’s media-oriented, technologically complex environment also requires Arlington residents to be educated consumers of media and technologically skilled producers of information. Not only is media literacy a key component for understanding life in the 21st century, but media production competencies are also becoming increasingly important to success in the workplace. As one small example, businesses and nonprofits are posting more and more audio and video to their websites and are requiring their staffs to be able to do the recording and editing.

AIM has more than 700 active members who produce more than 400 new television programs each year and nearly 100 weekly radio shows. AIM’s video and audio programming covers everything from high school sports to talk shows, local music programs, panel discussions, public service announcements, independent films, and more. The wide variety of program formats, genres, styles, languages, and topics reflect our members’ interests and the cultural diversity in Arlington. All video programs are broadcast on our cable television channel, Comcast channel 69 and Verizon channel 38, and radio programs air on the radio station, WERA 96.7 FM. Throughout the year, AIM leads several community projects to increase outreach. They include AIM’s youth production camps during spring and summer break, the Document Arlington Project for local high school students, and the Rosebud Film Festival for regional filmmakers. These initiatives are spearheaded and supported by specialized staff members, industry-recognized professionals, and qualified volunteers. The public is invited to drop in any Monday evening for a free tour. AIM offers media workshops for all skill levels at affordable costs. Training covers an array of media production areas, ranging from field, studio, and audio production to on-air radio broadcast and video editing. Included in the curriculum are AIM’s Master Classes with subjects such as Digital Still Photography, Documentary Production, Marketing Media Projects, and After Effects. As a nonprofit organization, AIM depends on people to become members and get certified in classes in order to produce their own programming.

Nestlé USA Chooses Arlington, Virginia as New U.S. Headquarters By Cara O'Donnell, Public Relations Manager, Arlington Economic Development

Arlington County is thrilled to welcome Nestlé USA, a subsidiary of Nestlé S.A., a leading global nutrition, health and wellness company, to its community as a new leader in the business market. Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe made the announcement that Nestlé USA will invest $39.8 million to relocate its corporate headquarters from Glendale, California to Arlington’s Rosslyn neighborhood in a move that will create 748 jobs. Nestlé USA will occupy 206,000 square feet in Rosslyn’s 1812 N. Moore St. address beginning in September 2017. “We have waited a long time to make this announcement,” said Arlington County Board Chair Jay Fisette. “We wanted to find the ideal company to move into 1812 N. Moore, which we consider to be one of the most prominent office buildings in Arlington. With today’s exciting announcement, we have found that perfect company and are thrilled to welcome Nestlé USA to our community.”

The Rosslyn high-rise office building has been vacant since construction on the building was completed in 2013. The building, which offers top-notch technology and some of the most stunning views of the D.C. skyline, was chosen for its centrality in the D.C. region, available workforce and accessibility to major transportation venues for collaboration with Nestlé USA’s headquarters around the world. “Nestlé USA carefully considered a number of locations and Arlington hit all the marks. The area offers appealing benefits for our current employees as well as a great talent pool for the future. This location allows us to be closer to our business operations, our customers and other important stakeholders,” said Paul Grimwood, chairman and CEO of Nestlé USA. “Nestlé’s growth over the past 150 years has enabled us to improve millions of lives through the products and services we provide, employment opportunities, our supplier networks and the economic contributions we make here in the U.S.” Nestlé USA’s decision to locate the company in Arlington also signifies a major step forward in Arlington’s effort to diversify its economy. Once known as a government suburb, Arlington has taken a concentrated effort in recent years to attract new and different companies to Arlington, specifically those associated with the innovation economy and with a global scope. “Nestlé USA is the latest company to choose Arlington as its corporate home, and it represents a significant shift in that more and more companies are looking at Arlington as providing the workforce, technology and access needed for success and expansion in this new economy,” said Victor Hoskins, Director of Arlington Economic Development. “Nestlé will be a key partner in our business community, and I look forward to working with the company as it continues to be a leader on the global stage.” As part of the deal, Nestlé USA will receive a total of $6 million from the Commonwealth of Virginia in a Commonwealth Opportunity Fund grant, which will be matched by Arlington County in the form of $4 million in Industrial Development Authority Performance Incentives grants and $2 million in Arlington County infrastructure mainly focused on Metro, transportation and the area surrounding the new headquarters. Arlington County is also providing extensive relocation assistance to the company to help ensure a seamless transition and maintain a high level of employee retention, including workforce assistance, familiarization tours, a staffed onsite resource center and technology tools to help transferring employees learn more about relocating to Arlington and the entire D.C. region.
