From the Editor I write this month’s column feeling decidedly less stressed and more serene! The children are finally back to school... no more juggling schoolwork with two teenagers, running a home, looking after a (fairly) young puppy and trying to produce the magazine, which is a huge relief! It is extremely pleasing to have news from some of our schools inside this month’s edition and we look forward to receiving updates from Gothic Mede Lower School as of our next issue. I would very much like to thank all the schools for submitting their news to me within the first couple of days of returning back to not only a new term but to a completely new way of working. You are now able to read about how the first few days of term have gone and what their plans are going forward for the rest of the weeks ahead.
October
2020
Welcome to our October issue!
We hope you like our front cover, sent to us a while ago by Graham Kirch and captured at the mill pitts. We think it is a stunning photograph - thank you Graham for sending this in to us, we hope it was a nice surprise to see it on the front cover this month! If you are dog lover look no further than the gorgeous dogs taking first, second and third place in the Arlesey Community Event’s virtual dog show last month! - You can see who scooped first place on page 17 of this month’s edition. We have a new feature inside this month’s issue which we hope you will enjoy (and contribute to) on a monthly basis. ‘Word on the street’ will features local residents voicing their opinions on a different topical question each month. This month, we asked readers what they had missed and how they had coped during the last six months of lock down. You can find their responses on the first few pages of this month’s issue. If you would be happy to take part in this new item going forward please do get in touch - the bigger the opinion the better! Until next month! Joanne

We took to the pavements this month to ask local some local residents what they liked, disliked, learned and missed during the previous six months of 2020 and how they kept themselves occupied. We were particularly interested in finding out how our local residents were feeling right across the board and how some of our local businesses were having to adapt in order to survive.
Thank you to all those people that agreed to take part., you are all so kind to be our first volunteers!- you might recognise a few familiar faces here. Sam Ward My biggest concern about the return to school is purely from a professional view - the guidelines in place for a safe return to school will limit children’s opportunity to participate in practical activities such as science experiments, cooking and music lessons, which will impact on their learning’..

Duncan Field I don’t think there has been a single BIG challenge during lock down, there were plenty of hurdles to overcome over the course of the last six months. Once football was suspended and eventually void for the season, our main aim at the football club was to reduce our outgoings financially. Our bar is our main income and so we had to furlough our bar staff and reduce any outgoings as quickly as possible. Once the government relaxed meeting other people, the committee and other local helpers as well as players put in a huge effort to get the club looking its best again.
“
When we were told our bar could open, all our committee were focused to getting everything Covid Safe as much as we could with signage, removing tables and introducing sanitising stations - that was the easy part, unlike other social businesses we now had to start thinking about how we return to football. The guidance given from the F.A was confusing and so like every other club we had to do what we could with the facilities we have. It is down to the committed people at the club and local volunteers that we have managed to get a safe enviroment ready for our customers in our bar and also the welcome return of supporters and football which is essentially why our club is here. Hopefully now as our season starts, the return to ‘normal’ won’t be too far away. “
Harriet White age 15 As a teenager during lockdown I have had many issues with not being at school and having restrictions. I found the beginning of lockdown extremely stressful as I had been set copious amounts of schoolwork that I found difficult to complete without the support of a teacher. On the whole, the last six months were a negative experience for many teenagers and not something I wouldnt wish to experience ever again. Children from 2-5yrs Funding available OFSTED registered.

Word on the Street Heln Backhouse
I’m looking forward to continuing some of the things I enjoyed during lockdown that I want to hold on to, and living my life a bit differently. I enjoyed the slower pace of life, the extended time for family, husband working in Stotfold, cycling, gardening, decluttering and supporting friends.
I’m looking forward to going back to relative normality but with positive changes as a result of this pandemic such as people valuing life and each other more, talking to each other more, having a stronger sense of community and caring for each other. I’m also looking forward to getting back to Church eventually and hugging everyone again!

Having been furloughed since the end of March and not sure when it will finish, I have had really mixed feelings about this time at home. I am three years from retirement but feel it’s come early without the luxury of making full use of not being at work. The restrictions of staying safe and social distancing keep many things in check but still happy to do it. Everything for me seems to have been on hold but I haven’t been idle. I have been able to do more inside and out In the garden. Even growing extraordinary amounts of fruit and veg, along with getting to grips with some projects in the garden. Luckily we have had some beautiful weather too.” Liz Anderson
The thing that has frustrated me the most is the inability to travel. I had a special birthday this year and to mark the milestone I had aimed to have visited 50 countries by the end of April. Unfortunately, Covid stopped me and I missed my goal by 2 countries. No trip to Luxembourg or Gibraltar, stymied by lockdown. In addition to that as a family we had an epic trip driving across Australia planned for August, that went in the bin too so it's not been a good year for those of us who love to travel. “

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,
A few weeks ago I discovered a tin of buttons at my mums house. She didn't want them, so I advertised them on the ‘free in Stotfold’ facebook page. Immediately I was contacted by a few people. One of the ladies, has a friend who makes mittens for dementia suffers and she was looking for buttons to sew onto them. She came and collected my Mum's buttons.
Today I have been forwarde the attached two photos of the type of mittens her friend makes. This has got me thinking - how many other local residents have a tin of buttons at home and would be prepared to donate them to this amazing cause?
The email address to contactif you have any spare buttons is Nettyp1961@gmail.com. I think your readers will agree they really are great. Alison Proctor.

Pix Brook Academy
First week at Pix Brook Academy in our new building! I cannot say it’s not a relief to have got here without any last minute bumps in the road. I think it is worth spending a moment or two to consider quite what an achievement this has been.
The contractors, Willmott Dixon started work on site on the 16th September 2019. To have handed over phase one of the school less than a year later is a fantastic achievement. To have done so with the huge impact of a global pandemic makes this truly remarkable. During this period, there have been a number of occasions when questions have been asked about the feasibility of delivering a school of this size and quality in such a time frame. To be sitting in a working school, with pupils in lessons and learning taking place is frankly fantastic. I am enormously grateful to all involved that we are in this position.
Clearly there is more to do. The school offers facilities and resources that are state of the art and I look forward to the opportunity to show these to parents, existing and prospective. Sadly the current situation makes this very difficult, social distancing is still a priority for all school visitors however I am able to take individual visitors around the school. Should you wish to do so please contact the school.
It is important to remember that notwithstanding the momentous changes in the school building this time of year is about young people returning to school after a break. This year it is even harder because most children have been out of school for such a long time. For those of us at PBA we are determined to ensure that the quality of the building is matched by the quality of the teaching.

We understand that there is much to do to try to catch up the work that has inevitably been missed during the long months of lock down. There are no quick fixes in education, those parents who worked with their own children during this period will appreciate the challenges, but this is our core purpose and all the staff are just pleased to be back doing their job. Its been great to work with children and we were also pleased to be able to photograph our pupils next to the Pix Brook Height chart, it will be amazing to see what they look like when they leave in seven years when we do the same thing!
The long process of both catching up and making progress started this week. The government guidelines in terms of how we must work with children does not make this process any easier, but what we have is a fantastic body of pupils and a committed team working in a brilliant school who are determined to provide the best experiences possible for our pupils. Week one is over and we look forward to rest of the year. Steve Adams.

Under 13 Amber’s Take First Step To Division One Stotfold Under 13 Amber’s really look the part this season with their new match kit sponsored by First Step Estate Agents. Now playing in Division One of the Royston Crow league, the boys are looking forward to getting back to the game as of this week. Coached by Barry West, Gary Witherington and Barry Grainger, the Under 13’s Amber’s have enjoyed a succesful few years and have grown into a well established team with a good strong reputation.
Barry West told the Stotfold News ‘We are hugely excited to be back playing matches and enjoying training after such a long break away. The lads have been able to play in new kits every season and always look smart wherever they play! We are extremley thankful to First Step Estate Agents for the amazing support they have shown to us over the last four years, contributing with equipment and also sponsoring our kits. A massive thank you from all of us at Stotfold Under 13 Amber’s.” With both pre-season games played so far going their way, winning both matches 3-2 and a staggering 12-0 the team look set for yet another successful season ahead.
David Taylor of First Step told us ‘We are delighted to sponsor this great local team for yet another year. We like to think we are doing our bit by giving back by suppling this superb looking kit for the boys to wear. To everyone involved with the boys we’d like to say a huge thank you as this year especially, it’s a huge community effort to bring some near normality back to life.
GOOD LUCK for the new season ahead to everyone involved and playing in the U13 Amber’s.”

News from
Etonbury Academy
It is wonderful to see so many smiling faces back at Etonbury. The children have returned to see further improvements to the school including new sports equipment, a refurbished SEND room and classrooms, new fire alarms and expanded play areas and we have just received the keys for our new reception area which we hope to open after half term. Exciting times.
For the second year running, we attained a further set of exceptional GCSE results, and nationally, our children have achieved significantly over and above what they were expecting. We are awaiting the local authority Welcome pack for pupils at Etonbury ratings, but we expect to be at the top again this year. Huge congratulations to all our students, who we welcomed back to school on results day to hand them their results, present them with their leaving gift and give the teachers an opportunity to say their fond farewells.
We have returned to doing what we love. Educating our children in the classroom to be the best that they can be. We welcomed our new year 5s from St Mary’s Church of England,Farfield Park, Roecroft, Pixmore Junior, Gothic Mede, Langford Village, Wilbury Juniors, Derwent Lower and Stondon Lower. Further up the school, we were joined by a number of new students and we are certain they will enjoy their time at Etonbury meeting new friends, experiencing the wide curriculum and enjoying our new facilities. With small year groups, we are fortunate that our teams can really get to know every child.
All our staff and students were excited to receive their welcome back pack, with a pad, pen and a special message. Mr Evason, Principal, greeted the school in a virtual assembly and then achieved 47K steps during the day as he walked around the building (one way) meeting all our children! It has been quite uplifting to see how responsible and mature our children have been on their return. The children have been enjoying separate break times, introduced to the one way system and embracing the sanitising procedures to keep Etonbury safe. We will no doubt need to adapt our procedures as things change, but we know that our community has the strength and ability to support this.
WE WANT YOUR PICTURES!
Are you interested in photography? We are looking for future front cover pictures for your Arlesey News Magazine!
We must congratulate Miss Vernon-Hamilton for achieving 5th place in the triple jump at the British Athletics Championships held at the beginning of term. We have exceptionally talented staff and students which we hope to tell you more about over the coming months. Their skills and talents contribute significantly to the success of Etonbury.
As we look ahead for this academic year 2020/2021 with some uncertainty, we are fortunate to have the people, pastoral care, technology and a supportive community to continue providing the education our children deserve with their wellbeing at the centre of everything we do. For now, friendships have been rekindled and classroom teaching has resumed...it’s a sight to behold.

October Recipes Casserole
& Toffee!
with Trace Buggins, Head Chef at Mount Pleasant Golf Club
Hi everyone. We’re quickly into the autumn months and the new menus we have wrote here at the golf club start to bend towards those lovely comforting dishes that remind us of home, family and of course Grandmothers . Well not this months dish, if my grandmother knew what a “ Turks Turban squash” was , she kept it close to her chest! I got mine from my fellow veg grower from Sam and her amazing allotment , but for this recipe you could use butternut, pumpkin etc Perfect for that Halloween evening and easily made in the day and warmed through for the party in the evening . I’ve also included an old fashioned burnt toffee recipe for bonfire night Stay safe and enjoy Turks Turban Moroccan Casserole 1 tsp cayenne pepper, 2 tsp ground black pepper ,1½ tbsp paprika,1½ tbsp ground ginger ,1 tbsp turmeric, 2 tsp ground cinnamon 1.1kg/2½lb cubed Turks turban (5cm/2in chunks)or other squash, 2 large onions, sliced, 2 tbsp olive oil,3 cloves garlic crushed, 570ml/ 1 pint tomato juice, 2 x 400g tinned chopped tomatoes,115g/4oz dried apricots cut in half, 55g/2oz dates cut in half, 55g/2oz sultanas or raisins, 1 tsp saffron stamens, soaked in cold water, 600ml/1 pint Vegetable stock, 1 tbsp clear honey, 2 tbsp coriander, roughly chopped, 2 tbsp flat leaf parsley, roughly chopped Method Place the cayenne, black pepper, paprika, ginger, turmeric and cinnamon into a small bowl and mix to combine. Place the squash in a large bowl and toss together with half of thespice mix. Cover and leave for an hour or two. Preheat the oven to 150C/300F/Gas2. Heat 1 tbsp olive oil and 1 tbsp of vegetable oil in a large casserole dish. Add the sliced onion and the remaining spice mix and cook over a gentle heat for 10 minutes so that the onions are soft but not Local chef Trace Buggins coloured. Add the crushed garlic for the final 3 minutes. Add the marinated squash Add the remaining tomato juice, chopped tomatoes, apricots, dates, raisins or sultanas, flaked almonds, saffron, vegetable stock and honey to the casserole dish. Bring to the boil, cover with a fitted lid, place in the oven and cook for 1-1 1/2 hours or until the pumpkin is meltingly tender. Place in a tagine or large serving dish and sprinkle over the chopped herbs. Bonfire toffee ¼ tsp cream of tartar 450g dark brown sugar 115g black treacle 125 ml warm water 115g golden shrup
Method. Line the base and sides of an A4 sized tin. Put the sugar and hot water in a heavy bottomed pan and heat until dissolved. Weigh out in a really well greased jug. Once dissolved add all ingredients and pop the sugar thermometer in, boil until you reach (270/140C) (up to 30 mins) Tip into your tin to cool.
Remove it and break up with a toffee hammer or rolling pin.

Support Nathan in his
Marathon effort!
My Marathon journey began in October 2016 when I was diagnosed with testicular cancer. At 37 years old with a young family I was absolutely petrified. My first thought was; Well that’s it, I’m dead. Testicular cancer remains a relatively rare condition and has an incredibly high recovery rate. Despite being told this from the beginning of my treatment, my experience of cancer up to that point was that once you had it, that was it. Everyone I had ever known to suffer with cancer had died from it, including my mother, at least 7 aunts and uncles, as well as friends and colleagues, I lost count at 20 ! Not one I knew had survived more than 5 years beyond their treatment. Having had surgery at Lister I was referred to the great team at Mount Vernon for chemotherapy. Three months of debilitating treatment followed, taking it’s toll on my mind and body. I was required to stay at Mount Vernon for a week at a time, receiving large dose chemo daily, this was followed by two weeks at home with one day a week trips back to Mount Vernon for top-up treatment. That cycle was repeated 3 times. Each day I had to inject myself in the stomach with drugs to bolster my immune system and prevent the chemo drugs from causing harm to my lungs.
Nathan pictured during and after his treatment.
As my treatment progressed, I suffered the dreaded hair loss and the pain of the first time banging my head on something without any padding. As well as the many other side effects of the treatment, too many to list. Despite all that, I began to look around the ward as I sat there being pumped full of poison on a daily basis and thought; do you know what? I am far better off than many of these people. During all this my sister was also undergoing treatment, so trips to Mount Vernon almost became a gruesome family outing, with occasional overlaps for scans, chemo or radiotherapy.
The amazing work they carry out at Mount Vernon is nothing short of a miracle. With help and support of my family and friends I emerged from the other end a little shaken ready to get back to it. Following my treatment my sights then set on getting fit to get back to work. I began with the BBC couch to 5k app, helped by the soothing voice of Sarah Millican. Up to that point I think the furthest I had ever run was the 1500m at school! On a follow-up appointment with my oncologist, I happened to mention that I had started running, to which he said that if I decided to run for charity, would I consider running for the charity for which he is a trustee. The following day I called my oncologist who put me in touch with the Cancer Treatment and Research Trust (CTRT). Two days later I received an email, I had been selected to run for the charity in 2020. From 5k I worked my way up to 10k and continued training until COVID came along when I learned the London Marathon would then become the virtual London Marathon. I plan to begin my run at Mount Vernon Hospital with the finish line 26.2 miles away at Stevenage Police Station, where I work. Please help me reach my fundraising target at the time of writing I have raised £500 with the aim of reaching £2000 https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/NathanCattley

Arlesey Community Events
Virtual Pet Awards!
Many followers of facebook will have seen the Arlesey Community Events team recently running an online competition to find Arlesey’s favourite pooch!
Inviting nominations by ‘liking’ each photograph, numerous dogs from all over Arlesey were displayed on their facebook page, each hoping to win the number one spot. From frenchies to collies there were a huge selection. Cute dogs, young dogs and some more refined characters - all with their eyes set firmly on the prize!
All for fun, the Arlesey Community Events team were keen to keep people engaged with their group even though they are unable to run their usual events throughout these uncertain times. One of the group’s organisers Sam Ward told the Arlesey News Magazine, ‘We have had to cancel many events, including the annual fete which is obviously very disappointing. We have also had to cancel our quiz night which we had planned for October due to uncertainty over the CV-19 situation.’ We hope people enjoyed our fun virtual dog show - it was our way of still being able to be present - albeit online!
Congratulations to the top 3 dogs! 1st Place was Bandit, 2nd place was Stella and 3rd place was Dino. It was just for fun so there are no prizes as such, but we will sort out some certificates! Thank you to everyone who took part - we have some lovely dogs in Arlesey!’
First place winner - Bandit.
Stella in second place.
The group hope to organise a show next year at the Fete in support of local dog charity Luna Animal Rescue.
The team felt that Kelsie deserved a special mention for drawing such a wonderful picture and we couldn’t help but agree! Great artwork Kelsie!
We think you did a super job!!
Keep in touch with Arlesey Community Events through their facebook page - look out for any forthcoming news and information!

Third prize winner Dino. Finally, Arlesey Community Events would very much like to thank Kelsie Green for sending them in this rather wonderful piece of artwork (below) during lock down.

News from
Arlesey Town Football Club
JOHN HUGHES It is with a heavy heart that we announce the death of a long serving and wonderful club man John Hughes snr at the age of 91. Everyone who knew John will tell you what a friendly and kind man he was, willing to talk to everyone around the club and helping out when or wherever he could when needed. Johns involvement with the club began in one way or another when his father Percy managed the colts teams in the 1950’s who then eventually became vice chairman of the club in 1954. For most of his working life, John worked at Meredews, a furniture manufacturer as a French polisher.
By 1970, john’s son, also named John was playing for the successful arlesey youth team and it was in the middle of the decade that John snr joined the committee and within a season becoming club secretary. In the late 1970’s John Hughes jnr had progressed to playing for the first team where he scored plenty of John, sadly missed by all. goals over the course of a few seasons and winning trophies for the club. John snr would always talk about these years with such fondness. In John snr’s later life, he was a member of the local shortmat bowls club but it was football that was always his passion. It wasn’t just Arlesey that was his love, John was also a passionate Luton Town supporter, always keenly wearing a Luton Town jumper or jacket down at the club and at times in conjunction with an Arlesey Town woolly hat keenly showing his love for both clubs. Over all his years at the club, John was willing to cover any duty which needed doing, particularly helping to man the turnstiles and selling programmes. It is without doubt a great loss to all who knew John, talked to him or ever had the pleasure to cross his path. John held so much respect from everyone at the club and within the village and Saturday afternoons will forever be emptier without him. We will all miss him so much x THE NEW SEASON The new season kicked off on 12th September with a Home game Vs North Greenford. At the time of writing the game had yet to be played so you can head over to our website www.arleseytownfc.com to find out that result along with the game Vs Colney Heath and also our away trip in the FA VASE on Saturday Sept 19th. All our fixtures have been released and are slowly being added to our website, in. The meantime you can download our full fixture list as a PDF file which is available from our website.
We are once again producing our Matchday Programme which won the Best Programme award for the second successive time in the League last season. Plus this year, if you can't get to a game but would still like to purchase a copy of that days programme you can email arleseytownfc@hotmail.co.uk and our editor, Duncan will tell you how to receive your copy.
CROWDFUNDING We have recently began a crowdfunding appeal to raise vital funds which will help us improve our facilities and to create a more welcoming, desirable and safer environment for our customers, players & supporters. Phase One of the appeal has opened which will help us gain funds towards our Covid-19 recovery, training facility improvement and also to improve our video content creation. Phase Two will hopefully improve our pitch perimeter safety and to begin creating muti sports hub here at the club. The final Phase, number 3 will go towards building and facility refurbishments. For helping our crowdfunding, we have many rewards that start for just a £5 pledge. As well as our crowdfunding, there are many sponsorship opportunities.
