From the Editor Welcome to February! Here we are already into our second issue of the year! February is one of our favourite months, with Valentines Day on the 14th and Shrove Tuesday on the 25th. Pancake Day is always fun in our home, with many attempts at flipping the perfect pancake - almost all ending in disaster and an awful mess to clear up afterwards! - Last week we welcomed a new addition to our home, Peggy an eight month old puppy. At least this year we won’t have to worry about the mess on the floor as she seems to have already perfected the art of hoovering up every single last crumb!
We hope you like the front cover of our February issue. This beautiful picture was captured by local photogrpahy enthusiast Samantha Haggerty. If you enjoy taking local pictures then why not send us your shots? We are always on the look out for front cover pictures (just be sure to take leave room for our magazine masthead when perfecting your picture!). Speaking of photographs, we are keen to locate some new pictures for our memory lane feature at the back of the magazine each month. Do you have any old school photos or pictures taken of Arlesey from days gone by that you would be willing to lend us? Please give us a call or drop us an email if you can help.. Lastly, we hope you enjoy reading the articles we have inside our February edition. A huge thank you to all of our contributors. We welcome a new submission this month from Jodie Chillery who has kindly updated us on news from both Arlesey Rail Users Group and from Arlesey Remembers You. Both extrelemely interesting articles to accompany those from Acorn, Arlesey Community Events, Steve Maddox and our usual round-up from all of the local schools and churches.
As usual, our thanks go to all of our wonderful delivery volunteers that enable us to reach all of the homes in Arlesey each and every month with your local magazine. If you are intereted in being part of our team of amazing volunteers we would love to hear from you (see our advert on page 2).
Until next month!

Police tackle speeding among ‘fatal five’ road behaviours Over 1,100 people were killed or seriously injured on the roads of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire between November 2018 and November 2019. This equates to almost 20 serious injuries and at least one death every week.
The shocking figures were released by police as part of January’s speed campaign to remind motorists that speeding devastates lives.
Chief Inspector Jon Roche, Head of Roads Policing for the three forces, said: “Far too many lives are tragically lost or changed forever as a result of speeding on our counties’ roads. It’s the reason we are so passionate about preventing avoidable collisions.
“The faster you drive, the less time you have to react and any mistake by you or another is amplified by that speed. Speed limits are in place for a reason. Never exceed the limit for the road you’re on and please make sure your speed is appropriate for the driving conditions. “Speed limits are the top safe speed for that road. It is often safer to travel at lower speeds, such as in bad weather and where there are pedestrians or cyclists, particularly children. Don’t gamble with their lives or yours.”

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,
On behalf of The Need Project and all who benefited from our help throughout the year I would like to thank all of our supporters who gave of their time, their money, their food, their prayers and their encouragement to us this past year. It never ceases to amaze me how much we achieve with what little we have, but non of this is possible without the incredible support of our local community. Our reports show that we are getting busier month on month and it doesn’t look like it is going to ease up anytime soon. We cannot solve all the problems, but we can do something to help and that is what counts.
To list the people who have helped throughout the year and especially this Christmas would be a mistake as I know I would leave some one out, but you know who you are and thank you. This year holds many challenges for us, but we are still here doing what we believe we are called to do. Our December report which is available on our website, shows some shocking statistics and illustrates just how busy we have been. 11 years ago when we started this project we never thought we would STOTFOLD still be here and definitely not as busy and big as we are today. We are still TUESDAYS and here, the past is gone and tomorrow more families will need food, clothing 3.30pm, 5.30pm & 7.30pm furniture. We shall hopefully help these people receive these items safe Centre, in the Greenacre Buttercup Road, knowledge that someone cares, so thank you all once again. Stotfold. Before

ARLESEY RAIL USERS GROUP The Arlesey Rail Users Group (ARUG) was formed shortly after the May 2018 timetable debacle. Chaired by Jodie Chillery and Jen Sullivan the Group aims to protect the interests of passengers who travel via Arlesey and monitor and encourage the provision of the best possible train service, by working with the train company, elected representatives, and other stakeholders.
We are currently working with Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) to find an alternative method of regulating the service during disruption to avoid skipping Arlesey. GTR are currently trialing a ban on skipping the station. The ARUG has Arlesey Rail Station successfully lobbied GTR to adopt a policy to additionally stop at Arlesey on the peak services from Kings Cross to Peterborough during disruption wherever possible. We are also in discussion for station improvements including improved bike facilities and security, and upgrading and installing additional ticket machines. GTR have recently installed new security lighting on the Arlesey side of the station and the bridge and platform fences have received a well overdue lick of paint. In addition a new shelter on the southbound platform was also installed in the October. A successful crime prevention and bike register event with British Transport Police (BTP) in Arlesey resource centre saw almost 50 bikes marked. BTP have increased patrols around the station in light of increased bike thefts and car park related vehicle crime at the station. Arlesey Streetwatch group are now including the station in their patrols. The CCTV on the Arlesey side has been re-directed so it now focusses on the bike racks and the lens has been changed to accommodate the distance. CCTV is due to be installed on the Henlow side covering the bike racks. There has been a spate of Vauxhall cars being vandalised. It has affected those cars left overnight and all have been on the Henlow side. This car park is owned and managed independently of the station. However with the assistance of Central Beds Council our area Constable from British Transport Police, and Inspector Masters from Bedfordshire Police, Arlesey is now seeing extra patrols from both police forces and a review of car park security by all stakeholders is due to happen in the coming weeks.
Finally, I'm writing this before the election result, but our outgoing MP Alistair Burt held an adjournment debate in Westminster directly to the Department for Transport in October regarding the unreliable service and skipping Arlesey. As a result we have entered into a discussion with the DfT and are hoping to arrange a meeting directly with them. For full information on the visit to the Rail Operating Centre or the BTP meeting contact Arleseyrug@gmail.com

Arlesey Remembers You and it’s Legacy. In 2014 the community of Arlesey successfully visited the grave of every single soldier listed on our War Memorial where ever he lay in the world. A bespoke poppy cross, prepared by the children of Gothic Mede was placed on each grave. The project was conceived by then town councillor Duncan Wang and a small committee of residents and was made a success by an army of over 300 residents. A film was produced, documenting the project and subsequently attracted national attention securing coverage in national press and the project team were invited to the launch of the national commemoration activity RememberWW1, and spoke at the event along side MPs Lords, historians and authors.
But that was all five years ago, what's been happening since? Arlesey Remembers You is honoured to be invited to speak at the Remembrance service for last two years with an alternative reading, sharing the personal story of a fallen soldier each year. This is a tradition we hope will continue, if you wish to find out about the Arlesey men please check out the website arleseyremembersyou.org. The Arlesey Remembers You team successfully lobbied for all new roads built in the village to be named after the soldiers who lost their lives. If you live on Albone Avenue or Ashwell Close have you ever looked up the soldiers that your street is named after?

The road sign for the Goodwins is already visible from the high street The memorial copse is open all year, situated at the back of the new cemetery on Hitchin road, it is tucked out of the way through the gates and in the field on the left. It is a peaceful and pleasant place to got for a walk, and spend some time contemplating. The bespoke benches were made especially for us, and the monolith has inscriptions from letters written home by Arlesey men. As spring is approaching, there's no better time to go and check out the saplings coming to life. This year we will install an information plaque at the copse, develop a path from the gates to the copse entrance and hopefully have some street signage to indicate its location from the road. - Arlesey remembers You

Etonbury Academy. Happy New Year!
We hope you have all enjoyed a safe and restful Christmas break, and looking forward to an exciting year ahead.
Many of you will be aware of our ETA Way. Everyone is respectful, Together we care and Always aim higher. This was embedded in all our work at Etonbury last year, and our students, staff and governors are fully engaged and recognise the difference it is making. As examples, these range from always aiming higher in lessons or constructive challenge at Governor meetings, respecting others in daily personal development sessions and raising money for those in our community that we care about. With the ETA Way in mind we have planned a year of events that make our school a great place to learn and develop to the best that we can be. Our Etonbury Juniors will be heading off on the Condover Hall activity trip to work together, care for each other and have challenging experiences to remember. They will be performing at Wembley in the Young Voices event and exploring Harry Potter World.
Our upper school will be heading off to France on a History trip, musicians will be performing in Italy, and some will be challenging themselves on the Duke of Edinburgh Award. We cannot forget that our GCSEs are now ahead, and mock exams will be upon us soon. Our students frequently meet their Mentors throughout the year to make sure they are on track and discuss any support they may need, be it for their wellbeing or stretching their learning. With our building expansion complete, leadership and staff firmly in place and the support of all our community, our school continues to go from strength to strength. Our volunteer Governors meet regularly to discuss and challenge school performance. Our staff meet with our lower and upper schools to ensure smooth transitions and best practice is shared. Our student leadership team continue to share and support improvement in the school. We are all working together to continue our success in to 2020 and beyond. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook to keep up to date with all our news as it happens. As we enter our recruitment period we are always keen to hear from talented teachers, trainee teachers and NQTs who are considering their future choices. Please do contact us for an informal discussion or to simply be added to our talent list via email vlockey@bestacademies.org.uk or tel 01462 730391. Wishing you all a happy, healthy and prosperous 2020!

Pix Brook Academy. If this term is half as full as the last one, we are in for a lively few weeks. The last week of the Autumn Term was a particularly busy one. On Monday we had our visit from OFSTED in the form of Barbara Obrien, an educational expert. She spent the whole day in school. I am pleased to say that the report reads very well and makes a great many positive comments about the school. Pupils were referred to as being conscientious and courteous and were a credit to their parents and to the school.
Tuesday, we had our much-anticipated visit to the Pix Brook pupil enjoy their carol concert pantomime. This is a great British tradition and I’m pleased to say that all pupils appeared to enjoy the performance. We have booked again for next year and hopefully we can make this part of the Christmas tradition at PBA.
Wednesday was the Christmas lunch, pupils enjoyed turkey with all the trimmings served by staff wearing compulsory Christmas cracker hats. Thursday was our Christmas Concert at St Mary’s Church. Over the years I have attended a great many Christmas concerts and I can say this was the very best. No doubt the location made a difference and I must again thank Reverend Bill Britt and Graham Clark for allowing us to use the church. Pupils performed a number of songs, both traditional and contemporary, supported by Bedfordshire Inspiring Music Service. The attendance by parents combined with the enthusiastic singing from pupils (and family members) made for a great atmosphere and provided a fantastic ending to what had been a superb term.
We now start a new term in a new decade. There is already much planned for this half term including Science day with Science teachers from the upper school, our assembly on county lines and a visit from an author for our creative writing day. In addition, we will continue to work with pupils to develop their understanding of key concepts with Maths and English supplementary lessons starting this term. Lots to look forward to.
We look forward to updating you on our news from the start of the new term in the March issue of the Arlesey News Magazines.

Gothic Mede Academy As we arrive back to school ready for a new term, our Value for this month is Thoughtfulness. At school, children will learn that thoughtfulness means doing something kind for someone else, thinking about other’s thoughts and feelings and putting someone else first. In class children will look at different ways that they can be thoughtful to their friends and family and what to do if someone is not thoughtful to them. We are delighted to announce that Gothic Mede Academy has been awarded Music Mark through a nomination from Central Bedfordshire Council. This is in recognition of the value that the school places on music, in and out of lessons. I would like to thank Mrs Oestreicher, the music subject leader, and Mrs Glindon, who has done so much to increase the number of pupils receiving music lessons in our new music room.
Last week some of our Year 4 pupils took part in a Redborne School Sports Partnership Athletics Event. Out of 16 teams, our two teams came 5th and 6th so well done to them. Activities included 5 strides, long jump, vertical jump, relay and soft javelin.
We currently have vacancies for parent and community governors on the local governing body for Gothic Mede Academy. The role will include supporting and challenging the leadership of the Gothic Mede, ensuring that the school provides the best for the children of Arlesey. More information, including an application form, can be found at www.gothicmede.org.uk/governance

Fairfield Park Lower School We started back to school this term with a theatre group for all pupils called The Snow Queen. Lots of fun and audience participation was heard by all! A big Thank you to the PTA for funding this event. Last month some of our KS2 children participated in an athletics event in Bedford. The scores achieved by the students were very impressive! We took teams from both Ruskin and Dickens, there were 16 schools attending and Fairfield Park Team A came 1st and Team B 7th. Well done to everyone who took part! We are now waiting to enter the county level for the team who came 1st, continuing our platinum journey of attaining well at sports at FPLS. At Ruskin Drive the learning street has been enhanced, incorporating a library, computing, IT and cross curricular spaces for topic, the creative arts, music and immersive learning. Storage furniture is in place and looks fab and colourful in this space. The learning space has been enhanced by a new wall art skin and looks sensational; children think there is a real aquarium in our school!
The wall art celebrates our school curriculum, our bespoke curriculum that wraps around the statutory government’s National Curriculum. Our school curriculum focuses on ‘The Environment’; ‘The Arts’; ‘Diversity’, projects weeks allow the children to be immersed in these themes and they are then threaded through the National Curriculum subjects. This has also been replicated at Dickens Boulevard as well in the old ICT suite, which will be reinstated to a learning street in the summer term. Both fabulous learning spaces for our children to have memorable opportunities and creative spaces. There are many other highlights to look forward to this term: Chinese New Year, workshops and visitors in the school, respect and tolerance for other cultures and tradition; PE events such as gym festival, multi skills and athletics supported by Redborne school, building up our stamina for physical activity, wellbeing and life style choices; Trips by different cohorts to enhance the curriculum including the year 4 residential to Caythorpe; Mother’s day celebration, enjoying time with family and celebrating special relationships

ACORN - Winter work.. The Autumn and Winter months are a busy time for our ACORN volunteers.
Most vegetation is dormant through the cold months, and it is easier to trim back bushes and small trees once the leaves have fallen. Most importantly, it is illegal (under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981) to disturb nesting birds or damage their nests whilst in use. This is generally interpreted as between 1st March and 31st August, and since we are often kept busy with grass cutting through till end October, it doesn’t leave many months for hedge work.
Cutting overhanging branches ACORN volunteers mainly work on the two Wildlife Trust reserves of the Glebe Meadows and Old Moat Reserve, and on the rural public footpaths which surround the village. Each of these has slightly different requirements, but it is all about cutting back with saws and loppers, to stop brambles spreading too far, and hedges growing too big. We work with hand tools mostly, to minimise the use of petrol machines; and stack the cut branches to make wood pile habitat.
GLEBE MEADOWS There are several patches of bramble around the edges of the Meadows – these provide good habitat for small animals and birds, but would spread across the meadows given half a chance. So each year we cut them back – thick leather gloves recommended for this work! We also cut back a section of the surrounding hedge to about head height – this encourages the plants to send out new shoots lower down, creating a nice dense hedge, a stopping them growing into big trees. And our final task will be to dispose of the branches cut from the big willow trees along the riverbank. The Wildlife Trust arranges for Clearing bramble at the Old Moat professionals to pollard a few of these each year (cutting the branches right back to the main trunk) – but we then have to chop these up and burn.
OLD MOAT RESERVE Over the years we have been managing the boundary hedge here by “laying”. The established hedging plants (mainly Hawthorn) are partially cut through just above ground level, bent over at an angle, and supported by a simple fence of Hazel stakes. This technique helps to thicken up the hedge, but takes a long time, and much of it now needs re-doing. Additionally around the “Moat” itself we have several smaller willow trees which also need pollarding regularly so they don’t get too big. Finally we check for low hanging branches or trees that might fall across the paths – if it is not too big we will tackle it ourselves, otherwise report back to the Wildlife Trust to deal.
FOOTPATHS All countryside footpaths run over private land, and in theory the land owner is responsible for keeping the path clear of obstructions – but this may not be high on a farmers job list, so we sometimes do a bit of clearing ourselves to keep the paths nice and open. Generally this means cutting back bramble or overhanging/protruding branches, but it all helps to keep the paths open and encourage people to use them. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do about the muddy conditions of some of them. They will recover in Spring, but for now you may need a pair of wellies if you are venturing out for a walk!

Salvage of the Navvy - Part 2 Written exclusively for the Arlesey News Magazine by Steve Maddox
Last month we told you about the early days of the ‘crane’ from the Blue Lagoon. This month we can bring you the story of how Ray Hooley from Lincolnshire had the idea and made a plan to recover the machine for restoration. After months of detailed discussions a date was set on a very cold January morning for an initial survey dive. This revealed the machine was in very good condition considering its 40 or so years submerged in the mineral rich water. A schedule of work was drawn up with meticulous planning for 25 weekends. 20 divers were enlisted for the mammoth task with Kevin McLaughlin and his right hand man Jim Champley as Project Organiser. Safety Officer, Alistair Mackay was selected for this unenviable post. Ray Hooley wanted the machine, if possible, to be recovered and restored to working order for future display in the Museum of Lincolnshire Life.
The ‘306’ working in the pit to excavate chalk
(Taken directly from the article by D.V. Speller of Bedford BS-AC ‘PLUCKING A MAMMOTH OUT OF A PIT’)
"Now we could ferry equipment down for the first working dive, which entailed general cleaning and clearing debris such as corrugated sheeting and various small items, thus giving us a clear view of the task ahead. Next we adapted and made tools to fit the varying nuts and bolts which had previously been measured under water. Completely exhausted, the first two divers on this job were replaced by two fresh divers who were able to complete the job just at the end of their air endurance. We had previously unbolted the boiler, which alone weighed six tons, and set chain round the circumference ready for pulling clear of the main carriage. Once the Diamond T had been shackled to the towing chain it was a comparatively easy task – but spectacular to see the turbulence on the surface when the boiler hit the bottom. Now the three-inch diameter pivot pins securing the jib to the main Navvy must be removed. This was anticipated to be a very difficult task and proved to be so. Following this failure, we moved on to more technical machinery – in the form of a 14lb sledgehammer and drift. We found that with four divers holding the 16-stone hammer-man in an upright position, he was able to knock the pins out.All the larger parts were now free from the Navvy and ready for lifting, and we took advantage of the generous offer from John Wise, who not only had offered and given the lifting bags, but also came along in person to participate in the lifting operations. The jib, once buoyant, was brought close inshore in preparation for later removal. At last we were ready for the climax of the project, the complete lift of the main body of the Navvy, which we estimated to weigh 28 tons. We started at seven a.m. on a very blustery yet sunny day.The first team of divers attached lifting strops around each axle (four in number) then the five-ton bags were attached to the lifting strops and inflated.
The second team attached two five-ton bags through the jib pivot eyes. The third group then attached a heavy steel hawser under and around the ballast tank at the rear of the Navvy. Just before the point of lift it became obvious that anchor lines should be attached to the bank due to the strength and direction of the wind which would have carried the whole load out to the middle of the lake, away from the position of recovery. This done, the last of the bags were inflated. The Navvy rose with great dignity and with very little manpower was pulled slowly to the bank.
Steam Navvy rescue
While this operation was being completed, the 70-ton crane, two 30-ton low loaders and two Diamond Ts had arrived to the great interest of the amassing crowd. The divers attached the crane’s double sling around the front axle of the still buoyant Navvy and the lift began. An anxious moment came when the 14-ton shackle chains to a Diamond T snapped, sending the cable lashing back at an alarming rate. The Navvy immediately started to slip back into the water.
The crane, taking the full weight, began to sound off its alarm signals. It was with great haste that a second set of shackles Credit for Image Steam Navvy Rescue -– Ray Hooley from the Diamond T were re-attached.
The machines, again in unison, began lifting and pulled the Navvy up free from the water, to a joyous cheer from the huge crowd."

Fly-Tipping Or Illegal Waste Dumping How To Report it... With the new year upon us many people use the time for a good old fashioned clear out...but is the rubbish disposed of correctly?
If you see fly-tipped waste, or witness someone in the act of fly-tipping, here's what we need to know: Any vehicles involved can be prosecuted (please note registration numbers). It is possible to prosecute if only the vehicle, not the driver, is identifiable (the person controlling the use of the vehicle can be prosecuted) Report what you saw (were there people involved? What were they wearing?) Make note of where the fly-tip is (road names and town / village names are always helpful) State when you saw the fly-tipping (day, date and time are really helpful for us)
We'll also need to know your name, your address and a contact telephone number. Don't worry; this information will only be seen by us (we may need to contact you as part of our investigation), You can report fly-tipping to us on 0300 300 8302, or email customer.services@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk.

New Year, Better Form
After a December month where we played only 3 of 5 scheduled games, our new year has started well and our form has improved. At the time of writing, our most recent 2 January league games have resulted in 4 points won out of 6 and even then it took a injury time equaliser from Aylesbury Vale, our opposition, to stop us gaining maximum points. In his programme notes vs Aylesbury Vale Dynamos, Chico Ramos (Manager) says “ The players including the ones not in the playing squad have been working hard on the training ground. It's great to feel that "buzzing feeling" amongst the players ,myself and my coaching staff. We are trying to bring a new philosophy to the club and we appreciate everyone's commitment and understanding”. With half the season gone already, our climbing up the league table is well needed. Our remaining home fixtures are further down the page
December Player Of The Month Unfortunately due to playing only 3 games in December, our usual Player of the month had to be postponed. However, our January winner is already on our website. Our February vote will be open after the last game of the month and will open on our website soon. www.arleseytownfc.com
