ACORN - Snowdrops in Spring On Monday 10th February a group of hardy ACORN members braved the wind and visited Benington Lordship Gardens to view their fantastic display of snowdrops. The gardens surround a manor house dating back to around 1700, built amongst the ruins of an ancient castle. Located a few miles south-east of Stevenage, the grounds are open for a few special events through the summer. We were all impressed by the display of naturalized snowdrops which emerge each spring around the motte and inner bailey. There are also many unusual and rare snowdrop varieties which have been planted throughout the garden. The visit was rounded off with a local pub lunch. The glories of nature have inspired artists and poets down through the ages: Snowdrops by Laurence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912) Little Ladies white and green, With your spears about you. Will you tell us where you’ve been Since we lived without you? You are sweet, and fresh, and clean, With your pearly faces; In the dark earth where you’ve been There are wondrous places: Yet you come again, serene, When the leaves are hidden; Bringing joy from where you’ve been You return unbidden Little ladies, white and green, Are you glad to cheer us? Hunger not for where you’ve been, Stay till spring be near us.
Later on in April we will be organising another nature walk to view the bluebells at Waresley Wood (or Moggerhanger Park is another good spot if you are looking to get out and about this Spring). Why not join us and come along? Annual membership fees are £6.00 for a family or £4.00 for an individual for the year.
You can join in the work parties if you wish, join in the nature walks and summer BBQ or just help us to observe and look after our local green spaces and foot paths. We look forward to hearing from you. ACORN committee

Arlesey Couple Support Eptopic Trust A couple from Arlesey are taking part in a year-long fundraising challenge to support the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust charity.
Matthew and Sarah Eames, both 31, are taking part in the EPT1000 Challenge. Over the course of twelve months they will be running, walking or cycling 1000 km to raise money for the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust, which supports women who have suffered an Ectopic Pregnancy and their families. Ectopic pregnancies, which occur when the embryo grows outside the womb, affects one in 80 pregnancies and can be life-threatening. Sarah and Matt decided to fundraise for the charity when they received help from them last year when they suffered two ectopic Pregnancies. “In April 2019 I was admitted to hospital with abdominal pain following an appointment at my doctors. I found out whilst at the hospital that I was suffering an ectopic pregnancy. I knew nothing about Ectopic pregnancies and the hospital weren’t very supportive with providing information or looking after me. I went on google and I found the Ectopic Pregnancy trust. It was from their website and forums that I found the information I needed. Sadly in October 2019 we suffered a second Ectopic Pregnancy but thanks to the information and support we had received from the EPT we were better equipped to spot the symptoms and deal with this emotionally.
Arlesey couple Sarah & Matt
The support of the EPT staff has been amazing so any money we can raise to help them continue their great work and awareness will be wonderful,” Sarah said. To support Sarah & Matt, follow their challenge or make a donation you can follow their Instagram page @eamesept1000 or visit their just giving site www.justgiving.com/eamesept1000 For more information about the EPT visit www.ectopic.org.uk

Gothic Mede Academy The Value for this month is TRUST At school your child will have the opportunity to take part in discussions which focus on the value of trust. Questions may include:Who do you trust? Are you trustworthy? The thought for the month: “Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do.”
World Book Week Year 1 had a brilliant workshop with Author Lou Treleaven. They thoroughly enjoyed learning a poem, hearing her Not Yet a Yeti story and then creating mythical creatures for their own stories. The children found Lou's visit inspirational and we can't wait to read their writing at the end of the week. On Thursday, we came to school in our PJs! Teachers shared a favourite book with all the children and they had the chance to pick which story they wanted to listen to. The children also had a chance to read with family and friends. We have also had a great time celebrating Science Week here at Gothic Mede. The children had the opportunity to take part in 5 different scientific investigations. They visited every year group in their science group made up of children from years R to 4. In Reception they carried out a waterproofing experiment. In Year 1 they competed to see who could make the strongest, tallest tower made of only marshmallows and spaghetti. Year 2 investigated the powers of static electricity. In Year 3 the children carried out an investigation called 'Don't tip the ship'. They tested boats to see how much weight they could take before they sunk. They had to think very carefully about where they positioned the weight! Finally in Year 4 things got very messy as the children experimented with different ways of protecting an egg when it is dropped from a height! Thank you to all the children for their exceptional behaviour and Pyjama day enjoyed by everyone! participation throughout the day and staff for creating such a

This half term started with a bang! On Tuesday, we had a visit from Lou Treleaven, a children’s author. She provided a fantastic opportunity for the pupils to hear about and work on fiction writing. We were very lucky to have Lou with us all day along with Amy Morris, Director of English for BEST, Alison Wilshaw, Director of Education for BEST and Alex Blink-Horn, an SLE in English from SWA. A really great way to start the term. We were fortunate in that the rain held off for our sponsored walk/run in aid of the NSPCC. Pupils took the opportunity to raise money in a variety of ways. We had a non-uniform day and asked pupils to get sponsorship for the number of laps around the 4G pitch. Pupils raised over £1,000, a superb effort for a worthy cause. The following day we were off to Duxford Air Museum. Again, this was a fantastic learning experience. Not only did we look at the artefacts from the Second World War, we also had the opportunity to ask questions and listen to two veterans from the forces -a genuinely moving experience. We finished the first week back with an assembly delivered by the Local Authority on road safety. This is a serious matter and one that the pupils understand is potentially life-saving. As a school we will be appointing junior road safety officers to act as advocates for road safety and taking advantage of the Local Authority’s support in this area. World Book Day was Thursday 5th March, during the day the children took part in a range of activities linked to World Book Day.A great day was had by all. The next few weeks will continue to be extremely busy. I would like to take this opportunity to wish Miss Broadbent best wishes for the safe arrival of her baby. We are extremely fortunate to have her lessons covered by Miss Aksoy until Easter, when Mr Brooks will be joining the school and taking the class. Mr Brooks will be continuing with us in September as Head of Humanities. Coming up, we also have the full range of activities including, Sport Relief, British Science Week, the Easter concert at St Mary’s and a number of other events related to the development of the school. I would like to take this opportunity to thank parents for their support of the school. There is a huge amount to be done in our development as a school but with your support we are making great progress. Mr Steve Adams - Principal

Arlesey Archive Group Needs You! As many of you will know the Arlesey Archive Group was first formed back in 2005 but has really kicked on in the past 3-4 years during which time we've organised two very well attended exhibitions and have set up a Facebook page which has just over 600 members. We are a subcommittee of the Arlesey Town Council. At the moment we are doing a recruitment drive to get more people involved. We meet as and when we need to but no more than 4-5 times a year, which you will agree is not too big a commitment. Our next project is a 'Talking Book' that we are hoping to put together. Basically, we will be contacting various people in Arlesey who have stories to tell. This is quite an undertaking, but we've already had quotations for the printing etc., we just need to move forward with the interviews. If you would be interested in getting involved please contact me by either telephone (01462 733801) or e-mail (sadhr@yahoo.com), I can tell you more about it and then if you decide you would like to join us you’ll be made most welcome. I look forward to hearing from you. Simon Spoor

News from
Etonbury Academy. A fantastic and celebratory month at Etonbury, with the news of our GOOD Ofsted outcome in every category! The students, staff and governors have worked so hard over these two years to achieve this result, making the required changes, and we are very proud that our academy can now be openly recognised for the GOOD quality of education we provide to our community. These are just some of the OFSTED comments:
• Leaders have acted quickly to improve the quality of education provision at Key Stage 2. Together with a new primary leader, there are now dedicated specialist primary teachers for reading, writing and mathematics • Leaders from the school and the Trust have taken effective action to address the areas for improvement outlined in the previous inspection report. • Leaders have high expectations for pupils’ behaviour – the behaviour and attitudes of pupils is good • All staff want pupils to be successful • Pupils are encouraged to achieve good examination results and be active citizens • Leaders have designed a curriculum that is ambitious for all pupils • Curriculum leaders have designed and planned the curriculum well in all subjects • Pupils have access to a wide range of extra-curricular activities • Pupils and staff have positive working relationships. We are looking forward to building on this success, with our established leadership and staffing teams, facilities and practices all now embedded. We provide our community with the school that offers stability and continuity for our children, surrounded by a secure environment for them to be the BEST that they can be, aim higher, care, and be respectful…the ETAWay.
Amongst our OFSTED visit, it’s been a busy one . We have had local and national businesses continuing to support us with Year 11 interviews and helping them towards their future steps, an author has been in developing our students creative writing skills, World Book Day welcomed Dumbledore aka Mrs Whittle , a record breaking week for the number of students receiving praise texts, and Mr Evason, our Principal, running Boxfit sessions with tremendous attendance! PE continue to have students excelling in indoor hockey, cross country, girls rugby, archery, badminton and table tennis to name a few. Don’t forget to see our PE ‘Legends of the Week’ on our Twitter page.
We are incredibly fortunate at Etonbury to have so much voluntary support including Modern Foreign Language helpers, counsellors and trip helpers. We also have students who volunteer their own time to help litter pick, run clubs with our teachers and join panels to interview new staff and critic our catering to make improvements. Not forgetting our Governing body who invest so much time in our school, attending meetings, walkarounds, training and importantly challenge the direction of our school. This month our Governors have been in for Finance and Performance Committee meetings.
A big thank you to all our Volunteers!
If you are still considering your child joining us in September 2020, whether in Year 5 or Year 9, and would like a tour of our school, we have a limited number of places still available, so please do get in touch on 01462 730391 to arrange. www.etonbury.org.uk To contact the Arlesey News Magazine please call 01462 731986

News from from News
Fairfield Park Lower School The whole school enjoyed dressing up for World Book Day last month. The children (and staff!) loved coming into school dressed in their pyjamas and bringing in their favourite book, continuing this year’s theme of sharing a story. The children enjoyed listening to their peers, hearing teachers favourite stories while also enjoying creative activities such as designing book front covers and creating our own wordless stories. We are delighted to announce that we will be displaying a "wild home" at the RHS Hampton Court Flower Festival this July! Following on from our Eco Week homework to design a "wild home" from mainly recycled materials and plants, Brodie's design was chosen as our entry in the RHS competition. It has been accepted and now we will begin making "The Bug Helta Skelta", with help from Brodie, staff and pupils. This fabulous design will be displayed at the show, you can buy tickets now on the RHS website.
As well as the honour of showing at the festival, there is the opportunity to win prizes for the school if the public vote for our design! Please go along to support us if you can. Well done, Brodie! During the first half of the Spring Term, the Year 2 children’s learning was based around ‘Ice Worlds’. For our WOW day children came in dressed as Arctic explorers. They carried out research about polar animals then presented their own 'Frozen Planet' programme using green screens to record their own film. Local Judo Club Bring Home The Medals! A number of our Judoka attended the Southfield Open Championship in Leicester. Hari Crowley won Gold, Josh Peacock and Jay Crowley won silver, Robbie Young and Laura Beech won bronze. They all fought amazingly well, the Sensai’s were very proud at this high class event. Once again a small representation attended the Izegem Open in Belgium, Robbie Young successfully defended his title from last year and won Gold, while Jay and Hari Crowley fought brilliantly to win bronze medals. If you would like to have a go at judo, for information contact details are below or come down to the Pendleton Centre on a Wednesday, find out what Judo is all about, you would be more than welcome, just introduce yourself and the committee would be happy to answer any questions you may have. BUTCHERS BLOG At the time of writing this blog, it is still cold and wet outside. Here’s hoping that sunnier warmer weather is on the horizon. Times certainly seem to be challenging on so many fronts, and we at the shop like everyone else, are wondering how everything is going to pan out. At present we are still optimistic that we will can stay open and be able to deliver our usual range of quality products to the community.
Please remember that we can offer a delivery service to customers in the local area, on a Thursday evening. This is for orders through our website, but we may be able to extend this service if need be. Please call us at the shop if you are unable to order online, and we will see how we can help.
On a more positive note, we are pleased to welcome Tony back to the shop. He has joined us again on a part time basis after having a hip replacement. I know many of you have been asking after him and have been missing seeing him in the shop. Spring lamb is very much the meat of the season and is always a favourite for Easter. Please be sure to get your orders in for the holiday weekend. We will be open on Good Friday 10th April from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday 11th April 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Closed Sunday and Easter Monday Open as usual Tuesday 14th April 8.30 a.m.
New to the hot counter is our steak pastry slice, thanks to a suggestion from one of our customers. These, alongside our pasties and sausage rolls, seem to be going down well. Our door is always open even just for a chat or advice or we are just at the end of the phone. We look forward to seeing you soon.

Fraud Warning For Local Residents. Bedfordshire Police is issuing a fraud warning after a number of local residents fell victim to a scam, with one losing their entire life savings. Action Fraud has reported that the scam was first reported in October 2019 and since has costed the victims more than £1 million. The scam is carried out by phone call, with the victim receiving an automated phone message that they have been charged for an Amazon Prime subscription. They are subsequently instructed to ‘press 1’ to cancel the transaction. When they do this, they are directed to a fraudster posing as an Amazon customer service representative. The fraudster advises the victim that their subscription was purchased fraudulently and that remote access to their computer is required in order to fix a security flaw that will prevent it from reoccurring. The unsuspecting victim then downloads software which grants the scammers remote access to their computer, including personal and financial information. Other variants of the crime involve fraudsters stating that the recipient is eligible for a refund for an unauthorised transaction on their Amazon account. Bedfordshire Police would like to advise all residents to stay alert to this sophisticated scam and follow Action Fraud advice to stay safe.
Personal information - always question uninvited approaches in case it’s a scam. Instead, contact the company directly using a known email or phone number. Try using a different phone line if possible or wait for a period of time as scammers have a way to stay on the line. Stay in control - have the confidence to refuse unusual requests for personal or financial information. It’s easy to feel embarrassed when faced with unexpected or complex conversations. But it’s fine to stop the discussion if you do not feel in control of it. Remote access - never install any software or visit a website as a result of a cold call. Unsolicited requests for remote access to your computer should always raise a red flag. Bedfordshire Police Cyber Security Advisor Sean O’Neil said: “We would like to ask our residents to remain vigilant to any unsolicited calls. Make sure that you share this advice with your friends and family “Remember to SCOTT GEEKIE always protect your personal information and never grant GENERAL BUILDER remote access to your computer or phone to PROPERTY MAINTENANCE anyone who contacts you first.” ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT GUTTERING REPAIRS Remember, if you have been a victim of fraud or cyber PLASTERING crime, report it to Action Fraud SMALL JOBS VERY WELCOME

April Recipe Chilli Loaded Wedges. Ingredients
2 baking potatoes, cut into wedges Low-calorie cooking spray 250g lean beef mince (5% fat or less) 1 onion, sliced 1 red pepper, deseeded and finely chopped 230g can chopped tomatoes 1 tsp cumin 2 tsp Schwartz Fajita Seasoning 1 tsp paprika 2 tomatoes, roughly chopped 80g reduced-fat Cheddar Fresh green jalapeno chillies, finely chopped (optional)
Method
Preheat your oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas 6. Put the wedges on a non-stick baking tray, spray with low-calorie cooking spray and season. Bake for 25 minutes, then turn, spray again and bake for a further 25 minutes, or until golden.
Meanwhile, spray a frying pan with low-calorie cooking spray and place over a medium-high heat. Add the mince and stirfry for 10 minutes, then add the onion and cook for 5-6 minutes, or until softened. Add the pepper and cook for 2-3 minutes, then stir in the canned tomatoes. Sprinkle in the cumin, fajita seasoning, paprika and a few twists of black pepper. Cook for 10-15 minutes, until most of the liquid has evaporated. Stir in the fresh tomatoes. Remove from the heat. Preheat your grill to high. Tip the wedges into an ovenproof dish, spoon over the mince and evenly sprinkle the cheese over. Add the chillies, if using, and grill for 8-10 minutes, or until the cheese starts to brown. Divide between 2 plates and serve.
