From the Editor Welcome to our May edition! Thank you so much to everyone that has been in touch with us this month- we love hearing from you and learning more about what you would like to see inside your Arlesey News Magazine.

May 2021

Thank you to Bryony Dent for sending us over the lovely picture we have chosen to use this month as our front page cover - we snapped a similar picture while out delivering along Carters Way last month (only Bryony’s shot was much better than ours!) It makes a gorgeous front cover, we hope you will agree. Speaking of delivering - we have a few roads still uncovered in Arlesey (Carters Way and The Rally being a couple of them) which we would be delighted to receive help for if you happen to have a spare half an hour once a month to lend us a hand. We deliver to every home in Arlesey and Stotfold and are so fortunate to have a fantastic team of over 110 helpers, without whom, we would not be able to do the job that we do. If you are interested in becoming one of our delivery volunteers please do get in touch - we would be so pleased to hear from you. We would like to say a huge thank you to Marcianne, Deacon of Arlesey Methodist Church for kindly helping us to deliver to one of the new roads in Arlesey where she lives Thank you & welcome to our team! We would like to draw your attention to the most thought-provoking article written especially for the Arlesey News Magazine this month by Jodie Chillery in her role as liaison for Arlesey Rail Users Group. You can read how the article came about -hopefully you will find it interesting and like us, hugely useful. Thank you Jodie for taking the time to research this and to send it in to us. We hope you enjoy your May issue of the Arlesey News Magazine. REMEMBER - THIS IS YOUR MAGAZINE. It helps connect your community and so it is vital we understand exactly what you would like us to include. Please do get in touch with us with your news, views and ideas we love to hear from you! Until next month,

Joanne

Dear Editor, I am a member of the East Beds Model Railway Society and we are shortly to be evicted from the premises we have occupied for the past 46 years due to the building being completely refurbished. We therefore urgently need to secure new premises for our society that will provide sufficient space to allow us to store our layouts and equipment and also to set up and run the layouts. Unfortunately, there is a lack of suitable premises for local community groups such as ours, so I am writing to ask if anyone has, or knows of, any safe, affordable and weatherproof premises that might be available for us to rent. For information, we traditionally meet at our clubrooms one evening a week to run, and work on, the layouts. At this time we also welcome any members of the public, of any age group or ability, who wish to visit, to chat about railway modelling, or to become more involved in the society. At all other times the premises are used primarily for storage. Our society is not run for profit, so cost is a significant factor for us. All proceeds are ploughed back into the society to pay our rent, fund our layouts and finance the annual exhibition that we run every February at Stratton School, Biggleswade. We regularly exhibit our layouts around Britain and have been a feature of Bedfordshire life for 60 years. It would be a shame for a society with such a long association with the area to have to be wound up for want of suitable premises.

tationery is unique.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, Thank you so much for all your support in reaching out to the villagers of Arlesey who knew our mum (and in some cases, some who didn't, but appreciated what she and my father had done over the years for the village), The funeral cortège was so moving. There were many people at the roadside (some even clapping) and the Mayor, Councillors and representatives of the Community Centre were all waiting to pay their respects. The hearse paused at the Community Centre and the Methodist church as requested. It couldn't have been a better turnout and was tantamount to the contribution our mother had played in the lives of people in the village over the years. So thank you so much for supporting us and helping this to happen. Once again, thank you for everything. Best wishes Verna Bull Editors Note: It ws our pleasure to have been able to help let people know about the sad loss of Mrs Rix.

Dear Editor, I am emailing on behalf of Sue Sparks. Sue would like to show her appreciation to Andy & mate from AJB Fencing who replaced her rear fencing and gate. After it blew down during the bad weather. She would like to say thanks for a fantastic and efficient job carried out. They cleared away all the debris and replaced all the fixtures & fittings and left the back yard clean & tidy. Sue would thoroughly recommend them. On behalf of Sue Sparks

Update from

Arlesey Rail User Group

In response to some feedback to our piece last month, the Arlesey Rail Users Group has spent some time chatting with the Samaritans and our Train Operating company, Thameslink. As chair of the group I try to be as informed as possible on all issues that come my way. The subject of emotional distress and suicide prevention is no different, and I'm keen to share what I've learned with you here.

Maybe you can't quite put your finger on it, but you’re not feeling okay. Or maybe you've noticed someone else who doesn't seem to be quite right, but what can you do and how can you make the first step? Ilsa Hawtin director of the Hitchin branch of Samaritans and Chris Berriman, Samaritans Network Rail trainer have very kindly taken some time out to talk to me about the ‘Small Talks Saves Lives’ campaign. The campaign was launched by the Samaritans, Network Rail, British Transport Police and the wider rail industry to empower the public to use small talk to save lives on the railways and beyond. Its message however is something we can all practice if we need too, wherever we are. A little small talk can be all it takes to interrupt someone’s suicidal thoughts. But how do you know if someone is in emotional distress? Ilsa explained for those close to us, "If we notice a change in behaviour, it could be withdrawal from everyday activities or a drop in performances, say at work or in a hobby, it could be a sign of disconnection or distress." Of course you might notice these feelings in yourself or other signs such as struggling to sleep or lack of appetite. Although it can be tough to speak out, reach out or seek help, the sense of feeling valued and listened to could be enough to begin a journey of support. Ilsa told me, "Connection is the most important factor. To offer help you don't need to be an expert, simply listen, but REALLY listen, and ask questions, it can make a huge difference." I was amazed that the impact of some simple questions or the act of listening could actually save a life. Ask twice if someone you suspect to be struggling is ok. Ask them what they need or if they want to share anything with you. They might say no, but the fact you've asked might make them feel valued and confident enough to talk later, it could have made a world of difference.

Its tempting to offer advice or share your own experiences but of course everyone reacts and feels different, so learning and practicing to really listen seemed to me to be the most important step after striking up that initial conversation. I was nervous to ask her what I should do if I thought a total stranger or member of the public was in emotional distress, its easier to leave it to trained professionals isn't it? But Ilsa reassured me, "You don't need to be an expert, try to strike up a conversation, discuss the fact the train is late, or that its cold or simply ask if they are ok (...) they will likely say no if they are not, it may already have been enough to distract their thoughts and help them to feel valued in that moment." - Small Talk Saves Lives In fact the Arlesey Rail Users Group is now in conversation with Thameslink about setting up some guidelines for rail users especially when we're communicating on open forums so we can signpost users to support networks. I had a similar conversation with our Ward Councillor on the subject and he confirmed Central Bedfordshire Councillors have recently received similar training in recognising issues in others and guidance on where to go for support. Our local authority is also working in partnership with Samaritans, MIND and the CAB to support vulnerable residents in Arlesey and the surrounding area.

Samaritans Network Rail trainer, Chris Berriman explained the background to the partnership, “Samaritans has been in partnership with Network Rail since 2010 and this has grown into rail industry wide prevention programme, to reduce suicides on the railway and support those affected by them, including rail staff, train drivers and the passengers. An important part of the partnership is the training that we provide to the rail industry. (Rail staff) have gone on to save lives on the railway. It’s my job to give them the tools and the confidence to be able to recognise someone that might need help and know how to approach them by starting up a conversation and getting them to safety." I also asked Chris what we as members of the public can do if we see someone looking or acting distressed. He agreed with Ilsa, "The public could also have a big part to play in making interventions too. We help to empower the public to trust their instincts if they think someone is vulnerable and recognise that they already have all it takes to save a life –just a little bit of small talk and asking if someone is ok is enough to interrupt their thoughts and may be the help they need." “Firstly, trust your instincts and remember you use small talk every day - at work or with friends of friends over a virtual video call. Striking up a conversation can be all it takes to interrupt someone’s suicidal thoughts. You might be worried that you’ll make things worse or say the wrong thing, but there’s no evidence to suggest that– a little small talk such as ‘how are you?’ is all you need and will open up the conversation to get them to safety. If you don’t feel it’s safe to make an approach, or you don’t feel comfortable doing so, tell a member of station staff or if it’s an unmanned station, call 999. (As Arlesey is part of the time) You could help save a life." What if we recognised these signs in ourselves? Seeking help can be hard, emotional distress itself might prevent us from speaking to our loved ones. Struggling to cope with everyday life doesn’t look or feel the same in everyone. We can’t generalise about how it'll make us feel or act but Ilsa explained the Samaritans phone line is open 24 hours a day every day, it is free and won't appear on any itemised bills and anyone can call for pretty much any reason. The number is 116 123, or email jo@samaritans.org as sometimes its easier to write things down than say them out loud. And importantly, you don’t have to feel suicidal to get in touch. Only 1 person in 5 who calls Samaritans says that they feel suicidal. You don't even have to say anything if you don't feel like it. But if you do call, someone will listen to you and if you want they can help you get support that is right for you. Ilsa also pointed out, their staff won't be offended if you put the phone down on them, or find yourself unable to speak, they are there to listen and you can always call back if the time wasn't quite right.

The Hitchin branch is looking forward to opening its doors when the pandemic restrictions allow and its volunteers can also be found at various public local events, they also visit schools, workplaces, railway stations and prisons - they are more than approachable at any event so if you do see any Samaritans volunteers out and about do stop and chat, its what they are there for! It has been fascinating talking to both our stakeholder manager at Thameslink and to the staff at Samaritans on this subject, I hope what I've shared has been of help to you too. The Arlesey Rail Users group is a voluntary organisation with the aim of improving our services locally for the benefit of the community and those that are visiting our area. We liaise with all stakeholders, including local authorities, our MP, the train operating company and Network Rail, and most importantly our community which of course is you! To do this we use local media and our Facebook forum to report relevant issues and updates. We are voluntary and receive no specific training and as such we’re always learning and sometimes we don’t get it right. I may have previously used insensitive or inflammatory language. It is never my intention to be insensitive or cause distress so if I have, please accept my sincere apologies and my attempt here to put it right Jodie Chillery Whatever you’re facing, Samaritans volunteers are there to listen – day or night, 365 days a year. Update from

Arlesey Community Events

Welcome to the latest update from Arlesey Community Events.

We'd like to thank everyone who took part in our Easter egg hunt during the first week of the Easter holidays - over 75 children came to collect eggs from us at our final location (see if you can solve the clue to work out where that was: "Here you'll find a tower surrounded by silent neighbours").

We're very grateful for the support of the 30 residents and businesses that "hid" an egg in their window for us during the week, and for the many people who kindly donated eggs for us to hand out. It was lovely to physically see so many families on Easter monday and we look forward to being able to hold a bigger event in the summer.

We held our first Easter Bake off, and crowned 3 Star Bakers - Lottie Podmore (age 7 years), Alisha Green (age 11 years) and Yvette Marshall (18+ years!). The entries were judged by a local cake baker, Kerry Durrance. We're grateful to Gothic Estates for their contribution towards the prizes for this event.

As restrictions start to be lifted please keep your eye on our FaceBook page for details of any events we finally may be able to hold.

We'd like to say thank you for supporting us in the events we have been able to run, and we cannot wait to see you all very soon! Thank you so much Joanne for all your hard work keeping the Arlesey News going over the last year - we really do appreciate it!

Sam Ward Arlesey Community Events.

News from

Etonbury Academy

We are delighted to welcome in the Summer Term, we have lots to look forward to, most of all having some normality return with all students in school, extra curricular activities resuming and trips to be planned. We have also returned to celebrate the enormous success of our BTEC Animal Care and Childcare students who achieved fantastic results in their examinations taken in January. This was really no mean feat, having been told just prior to the exams that we were going into lockdown, our student’s stamina and resilience never fails to amaze us, but these results are also a fantastic example of how they have continued to work through the toughest of times.

Mrs Isobel Phillips, our Intervention Lead and Second in English, has linked with The National Tutor Programme, to support research and development whilst providing additional support for our children. Mrs Alice Wagstaff-Sherwood, Head of English, has commenced her work with the University of Oxford through The Brilliant Club and Scholars Programme which is benefiting so many of our students in the Secondary School. You can read more about this in our Spring Term newsletter accessed via our website. During the Easter break, 36 students embarked on their Duke of Edinburgh Award, learning some valuable life long skills, planning routes, pitching tents, hiking, cooking 3 meals a day and team building.

Improvement works have continued at Etonbury with the refurbishment of our bike sheds, and an additional ICT suite located on the ground floor. Technology is a real strength of our school, and is driven by the excellent staff who embrace it, and want to develop these vital skills in our children. Thank you to Mr Rhys Kirkman, Head of ICT and Computer Science, who has led this development project. Our Student Senior Leadership team have been discussing the school environment, raising awareness of LGBTQ+, Wellbeing and considering the charities they would like the school to support. Last term our students raised £712 for Red Nose Day and LUNA Animal Rescue.

It is a great relief to be back to school after an Easter of lockdown. It feels that we are on the way to a bit of normality, I know for pupils being in school with their friends and having a “normal day” makes all the difference. It is now important for us at PBA to begin to undertake all those activities that would normally have been spread out over the year.

As I look ahead to the next few months its clear that we are all going to be busy. Although the official SATs will not happen this year we will want to give our pupils the opportunity to show what they have learnt over the last two years and undertake some assessments with them. The way in which the work has been undertaken and the commitment shown by pupils (and their parents) needs recognition.

We are also planning to provide an opportunity for parents to finally visit the school. It has been one of the great disappointments of this period that our new school with all the fantastic facilities has not been able to be shown to our parents. The hope is that following the relaxation of the lockdown we will be able to do so. The 21st June is looking like a really important day!

Over the last month we have worked really hard to try to bring some energy into the school. Our involvement in Mars day meant that pupils were able to hear direct from scientists involved in the exploration of Mars and build their own models of a Mars Rover. Earlier in the week we had a presentation from the Houses of Parliament where pupils were able to ask questions to the guide about the way in which the House operates. Some of our pupils even knew who our local MP was! It has been much more difficult to undertake learning in this way during the last year, our hope is that we will soon be back to normal. Overall its been an interesting period in the life of the school. I’m pleased to say that throughout this difficult period our pupils have been fantastic. Many of them have been involved in the appointments the school has made in preparation for next September and we will start the process of agreeing the additional class names required very soon. We look forward to having parents in for a face to face parents evening and hopefully we will be able to enjoy a school sports day for the first time in over a year! Finally, it’s important to remind the pupils, (and myself) that we have lived through a period of History that will have a profound effect on the future. The experiences and recollections that the children take with them will be the stuff of History books one day!

News from

Arlesey Methodist Church

The equality, diversity and inclusion during the Easter celebration

The last 12 months have been hard for many of us because of the lockdown; however, looking back a few days ago, each of us has tried to celebrate Easter in the best way we can with family, friends, and colleagues.

One of my new friends showed me how she celebrated Easter by making two posters: one for Christians with Easter messages and another one for Muslims celebrating Ramadan.

I asked her how did she come up with the idea of making both posters, and her answer was simple: “It was all about promoting equality, diversity and inclusion; we all breathe the same air!” What an answer?! Since then, I have been asking myself, “how inclusive shall I be? How inclusive shall we be?”

Easter posters created to celebrate both Christian and Muslim beliefs

The truth is Jesus was about equality, diversity, and inclusion. He died for all humankinds’ salvation; he loves each one of us equally in our diversity. His salvation is free and accessible for everyone. May the gift of Pentecost be equally bestowed upon us all as we move forward. Written by Deacon Marcianne Uwimana. Arlesey Town Football Club News

Celebrating 130 years of Football Change of Chairman

It is with regret that Chairman John Morrell resigned from his position at the club in mid-April. John served the club for 5 years , taking over in May 2016. During that time John helped steer the club through difficult financial times and together with his commitment and energy, helped stabilise the club on and off the field. John leaves the club in much better shape than when he came in. Everyone at the club thanks John for his time, effort and help during his tenure and we wish him and his wife Christine all the very best for the future.

Taking over from John on an initial Interim basis is former Arlesey Town Committee members hard at work removing the raised platform and Premier League striker Dave Kitson. Dave took over his role with immediate effect and is looking forward to contributing to the start of the next chapter in the clubs history.

For the full club statement on Johns resignation and the new appointment of Dave Kitson, head to our website www.arleseytownfc.com Upgrades & Improvements

Work began in March on the clubhouse roof that was beginning to leak in a few places causing a bit of water damage, so with that in mind we also have taken the opportunity to work with local company Faulkners Flooring to lay new floors throughout the clubhouse. Committee members have also been hard at work by taking away one of the raised platforms in our bar, giving a bit more space in that part of the club with the base and materials hopefully be put to use elsewhere. Our changing rooms will also get a makeover with new benches and flooring.

Pre-Season Fixtures

We have also began to get our Pre-Season schedule together for next season. Fixtures are subject to change and will hopefully allow spectators in (if government guidelines allow). 03/07 – MK IRISH (Away) 13/07 – ST ALBANS CITY (Home) 15/07 HITCHIN TOWN (Home) 17/07 – HENDON (Home)

May News from Acorn OUT AND ABOUT – WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN MAY

May is peak Springtime, as (hopefully) warmer temperatures allow plants and animals to thrive. In the plant kingdom, common favourites including Cowslips, Celandines, Buttercups and Daisies should still be going strong. If you are quick there should still be time to see some glorious displays of Bluebells – Campton Plantation (near the CBC offices at Chicksands), or Moggerhanger Park and RSPB Sandy if they are open (check web sites). Centenary Wood (off Malthouse Lane, Stotfold) has a nice display – although sadly they are the Spanish rather than native British variety.

Nettles and Cow Parsley will be growing anywhere they get a chance. Often seen as weeds, yet they provide invaluable habitat and food source for a wide range of insects. The sting of a nettle comes from thousands of tiny needle-like hairs along the stem, each with a its own supply of a fiery cocktail of chemicals ready to inject. Yet the tender top leaves can be eaten fresh as part of a salad, or fried to produce nettle leaf crisps! The frothy white umbrella-like flower clusters of Cow Parsley are a perfect nectar source for smaller insects. Along the roadside verges, the wonderful displays of Cowslips along the A507 will be joined by others including Oxeye Daisies. Hawthorn – which was producing it’s new leaves while the Blackthorn was in blossom – will now have caught up and be joining in the display of gorgeous white blossom. Other trees are pushing out new growth through gnarled old bark.

Insects in particular appreciate the extra warmth from the sun. Butterflies including Brimstone, Comma, Peacock and Red Admiral (which can be seen at almost any time of year), are joined by Large and Small Whites (often called Cabbage Whites), Orange Tips, and Speckled Woods. On the warmest days the early Dragonflies and Damselflies may also be seen darting and hovering – usually to be found near our rivers and ponds. Bees will be out and about, taking advantage of the nectar provided by all the new blossom.

Keep an eye out for tadpoles in ponds – but it will be a while yet (July) before they start looking like proper frogs. The first clutch of ducklings should be hatching out, followed later in the month by cygnets (baby swans). Remember at this time of year it is even more important to keep dogs on leads in nature reserves and near rivers or ponds where birds might be nesting. Also remember that feeding them bread is like junk food – too much is not good for them (check the web for healthier Anxiety, Weight Release, treats you can give them). Depression, Fears & Phobias, Smoking Cessation, Hypnobirthing Talking of birds – if you have a garden you may notice lots of activity with birds busy Hypno-Gastric Band Therapy..... collecting worms and insects to feed their newly hatched young. Head down to Etonbury Wood and you may hear Chiffchaffs, Blackcaps and White Throats singing out. Check out (for example) the RSPB web site to learn their songs. And for a wider range of birds, including Flycatchers and Nightingales, why not arrange to visit a larger site like RSPB Sandy or Paxton Pits? (check out web sites for possible Covid restrictions). One bird we haven’t heard for a while now – but used to be a regular around the village – is the Cuckoo, which has declined in numbers in recent times. These birds make a heroic 50+ hour migratory flight over the Sahara dessert each year, for which they need to build up food reserves. Droughts in southern Spain in recent years may be making this more of a challenge.

Hot Topic - Local Plan

Main Modifications Consultations (ends May 5th) We are now in the final stage of the Central Beds Local Plan process, after a mind-bogglingly complicated process of reviews and consultations, and hundreds of documents and comments amounting to thousands of pages of submissions. You may be forgiven for giving up the battle years ago – but I would urge you to support this final fight to try and salvage something for our community. If you have been following the process at all, you will be aware that the main impact for Arlesey is an additional development of around 2,000 dwellings “East of Arlesey”. This is in addition to (and joining up with) the 1,500 dwellings known as the MA8 Masterplan, and will stretch down from roughly level with Lymans Road south to well beyond the cemetery, on the eastern side of the village. At the last round of consultation, the government inspectors had challenged CBC to justify the scale of the proposed development – but when it came to the crunch, they clearly had no interest in hearing arguments from either side, and so there is no longer any hope of removing the Arlesey development from the Local Plan, assuming it gets finally agreed.

So what is the relevance of this final consultation? It relates to a set of documents which cover all the “Main Modifications” which are proposed to be made to the Local Plan as originally put forward. The relevant section for Arlesey is pages 56 to 63 of CBC document EXAM 137, and the maps on page 9 of EXAM 141. There are two key issues resulting from the proposed modifications:

-

- Confirmation that the eastern edge of the new development will be limited by the major gas pipeline (running roughly south from the A507 roundabout). This was always the intention, but this will make it explicit. - The area of approx. 100 HA east of the pipeline (including the Blue and Green Lagoons), which was originally put forward simply as a Country Park, is now being described as a mixed use, potentially including sports provisions and some may remain as arable fields. It is this second issue which is of concern, as it could result in a greatly reduced area of country park – despite this being put forward as one of the main benefits of the development. Referring to the specific proposed uses: - The 19 HA shown as formal recreation (e.g sports pitches) is way in excess of what would be needed, taking account of existing and proposed recreation areas to be delivered as part of the current Masterplan. - The idea that 43 HA (between Arlesey and Fairfield) should remain as arable fields originated from Fairfield Parish Council, who – half way through the Plan process insisted it was the only way to ensure separation from Arlesey. And yet in all the early stages they were insisting that the gap between Fairfield and Arlesey should include bands of trees, to provide screening between the two. They even put forward their own proposed plan of how the full 97 HA could be developed as a proper country park – which all seemed very reasonable.

The remaining 35 HA includes approx. 8 HA of the Blue Lagoon itself. By the time you have provided roads, parking, club houses, information center etc there would be limited scope to provide semi-natural park land. CBC have tried to pretend that the whole area can still be called a “country park”, and it doesn’t matter if a big chunk of it is sports pitches or fields – but that is just nonsense.

The bottom line is that detailed design of the Country Park does not need to be included in the Local Plan, and should be left for separate local consultation with all relevant parties. There is a chance for you to have a say, via the Central Beds web site – Planning – Local Plan – Latest Consultation (closes 5th May). A Resident
