ISSUE
Over the past few decades, Indonesia has witnessed significant population changes, with urban dwellers now outnumbering the rural population. This urbanization trend is projected to continue, resulting in a high population density that surpasses the recommended level for ecological stability. Consequently, the area faces considerable overpopulation and potential ecological challenges. While urban living offers various benefits like improved job opportunities, education, healthcare, and cultural activities, it also brings negative impacts. These include a loss of connection to nature, exposure to pollution and toxins, overstimulation, heightened stress and anxiety levels, and a lack of spiritual practices and guidance.
To address these negative effects, spiritual practices can play a crucial role. By cultivating a sense of awe and appreciation for nature, individuals can strengthen their connection to the environment. Detoxifying the mind and spirit through practices like mindfulness and self-care can help combat the stress and overstimulation of city life, promoting inner calm and peace. However, there is no definitive consensus on whether spirituality is being forgotten in modern times. Some argue that there is a global trend towards secularization and a decline in religious participation, which might lead to a decrease in traditional spiritual practices and beliefs. In response, people may turn to more individualistic approaches to spirituality, such as mindfulness meditation, yoga, or other forms of self-exploration. It is essential to recognize that spirituality is deeply personal and subjective. Different individuals may have diverse interpretations and practices that they consider spiritual. Therefore, making generalizations about the state of spirituality in society as a whole becomes challenging. Overall, while the way spirituality is practiced and experienced may undergo changes in modern times, the concept of spirituality itself is unlikely to be completely forgotten.
