It feels like ages since I sat down to write one of these notes for an issue of Arkansas Wild, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t been busy. Our recent Bike Arkansas special edition has been making the rounds and receiving great feedback, while our newest title, Paddle Arkansas, remains one of the greatest amounts of fun I’ve ever had working on a magazine.

Speaking of fun, we’ve got a Pinnacle Mountain-sized pile of it. This is our backpacking issue, and we’ve got profiles of a couple of great multi-day hikes, a gear checklist for day hikers and a tasty idea about how to eat well out on the trail courtesy of chef Jeff Owen of Ciao Baci in Little Rock.

This issue also marks the first-ever edition of the annual Pinnacle Awards— which means that you, the readers, had a hand in helping us make this issue of Arkansas Wild. BATS THREATENED A deadly fungus has decimated native bat populations in Arkansas

BY ZOË ROM As hikers have no doubt noticed, caves around the country, including near Arkansas parks like Devil’s Den State Park in West Fork, have been declared off-limits to hikers and spelunkers. The reason? Conservationists are attempting to protect bat populations against a deadly disease, Pseudogymnoascus destructans, more commonly known as White Nose Fungus. This insidiuous fungus infects the skin on the muzzle, ears and wings of hibernating bats, causing them to exhibit strange behavior as they hibernate. It leaves a characteristic (though not always obvious) pattern of skin erosion on the affected areas that resemble string y white spiderwebs.

Infected bats will wake repeatedly, and move toward the mouth of their hibernacula (or hibernation zone). Bats will even exit their caves and fly during winter months, eating up all-important fat stores. This leads to dehydrated and emaciated bats, resulting in a decline of almost 80 percent in bat populations across the country.

White Nose Syndrome (WNS) has a 90 percent mortality rate once a population is infected, with long-lasting effects due to the fact that bats can only have one pup per year, making bat populations slow to rebuild. The fungus was first discovered in New York in February 2006, and has spread south and west.

Currently, cases of WNS have been discovered in 25 different states—including 14 Arkansas counties throughout the Ozark and Ouachita mountain regions.

Arkansas, and particularly the Ozarks, is home to a geography that is particularly conducive to cave formation, and the rocky nooks and crannies once harbored a healthy and vibrant bat population. In March of 2010, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission closed down all caves on public lands in order to prevent the spread of White Nose Fungus. Though worst-case scenarios predict that WNS has the potential to devastate Arkansas’ bat population, the full extent of its impact isn’t yet known.

“So far we have only seen significant decreases in bat populations in a few sites since the fungus was first found in the state in 2012, but we are still going through the early stages of its spread in most of the state, and it usually takes a few years for the impact to really start to show,” says Blake Sasse, a wildlife biologist with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission who specializes in mammals.

WNS has been diagnosed in seven different Arkansas bat species: Big Brown, Eastern Red, Gray, Indiana, Little Brown, Northern Long-eared, Rafinesque’s Big Bat and Southeastern Bat. The Indiana bat has been hit particularly hard, and was already considered endangered before the infection. Now, authorities are concerned that declines caused by WNS will lead to its extinction.

Laboratory examinations have determined that the fungus requires direct physical contact to spread, and is primarily spread through bat to bat contact. The fungus can linger in bat g ua no a nd persist in cave sediments long after bats have left the cave, which renders ma ny a rea s uninhabitable for uninfected populations. Patterns of geographical spread suggest that humans can harbor the fungus on clothing and gear, which may be perpetuating the spread of WNS. Though this mode of transmission has yet to be proven in lab conditions, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has been able to isolate fungal spores on equipment and clothing after exiting a contaminated cave.

While WNS has no demonstrated effect on human health, there is much that we humans can do to help slow the spread of WNS. All caves on public land have been closed, and it is recommended that would-be spelunkers avoid caves with known bat populations.

“The best thing that people can do to slow the spread is to either not go in caves or if they do, they need to decontaminate their gear and clothing before and after entry,” says Sasse.

Many caves, such as Blanchard Springs near Fifty-Six, are still open, and have rigorous decontamination protocol for visitors to follow. Avoiding contact with bats and their habitats is recommended. Further research into WNS is needed in order to pinpoint the disease’s origins and how it travels.

The best we Arkansans can do is to be informed, keep away from closed caves and help prevent the spread of WNS.

ALL-IN-ONE 'Hobo packs' are a backpacker’s best friend at dinner

At the end of a day of hiking, making a hobo meal is as easy as building a fire and combining ingredients.

It’s been a long day out on the trail, and nothing sounds better than building a fire, resting weary feet and getting a much-needed hot meal into depleted bodies. But no backpacker wants to haul a kitchen’s worth of pots and pans, meaning too many times hungry hikers settle for freeze-dried or canned food before turning in for the night.

It doesn’t have to be that way. We can all eat well on the trail with a hobo meal, a meal cooked inside a foil package. Meat, vegetables and seasonings all come together to make a hearty, filling meal that’s only limited by your imagination.

For our hobo meal experience, we caught up with Jeff Owen, chef at Little Rock’s Ciao Baci, a popular restaurant known for its down-home flavors and quality ingredients.

Owen has been running the Hillcrest eatery’s kitchen for four years now, and in that time the restaurant has seen its reputation for delicious food skyrocket in central Arkansas.

“I started cooking outside in the Boy Scouts. It was a great way to avoid digging latrines,” he says with a laugh. He’s continued getting outside in Arkansas through a variety of activities that range from skateboarding to fishing for trout and bream.

BASIC HOBO MEAL

Ingredients:

(serves 4)

Aluminum foil

Preparing a hobo meal is quite simple: Place ingredients on aluminum foil (top); then fold into a sealed packet (bottom) and cook over hot coals (preceding page).

4 hamburger patties. (Substitute chicken, fresh fish or another protein of your choice— or just double up on the mushrooms and vegetables for a vegetarian treat.)

4 medium-large golden potatoes, diced 3 tomatoes, diced 20 white mushrooms, quartered 4 tablespoons butter 4 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce Fresh herbs such as thyme and sage (optional)

Directions: Build each packet by taking 1-foot sections of aluminum foil and doubling them up to create two layers. Place one hamburger patty (or protein) on each foil section. Divide the remaining ingredients evenly among the packets.

Fold the long sides together, then fold over the ends to seal the food inside. Cook over hot coals for about 20 minutes, flipping halfway through.

Fun alternatives:

As Jeff prepares the charcoal for our meal with a practiced ease, he talks about taking his 2-year-old daughter on her first camping trip, a recent trip to Petit Jean to stay in one of the park’s yurts. Then, as the coals fill the air with a rich, smoky aroma, he fills a double-layered foil packet with a thick hamburger steak piled high with golden potatoes, fresh mushrooms, onions, diced tomatoes and fresh sage and thyme from Ciao Baci’s on-site garden. A quick bit of folding and each meal is sealed in its own packet and tossed directly on the coals. In less than 20 minutes, we’ll be eating.

“The great thing about these meals is how versatile they are,” Jeff says. “Fresh fish, chicken and any sort of vegetables can make a delicious meal.”

The hobo meal is only limited by your imagination. Use chicken or fresh-caught fish instead of hamburger, or utilize the packet system to make decadent campfire s'mores, sausage and onions for breakfast or even gooey monkey bread.

Keep It Cool: To keep meat from spoiling during an overnight trip, it's best to start off with meat that's already frozen, then pack in a small, soft cooler with dry ice. For longer trips, or when carrying extra weight isn't feasible, canned meat can be used in place of fresh.

Living the Good Life Mollyjogger embraces the best of the Arkansas outdoor lifestyle

BY ZOË ROM A fire crackles beneath a cast iron skillet, frying up the day’s catch. Flannel-clad hunters and fishermen huddle around the warming flames to swap stories and tall tales of adventures deep in the Ozark Mountains.

This is the aesthetic and storytelling that inspired Rick Stagner’s Mollyjogger, an online retail space that features adventurous apparel and accessories steeped in the American work-wear tradition.

The name Mollyjogger comes from an old hunting and fishing excursion club established around 1890.

The Mollyjoggers were known for spring and fall Ozark expeditions that boasted bird dogs, waxed canvas and wool clothing and wagons laden with tasty provisions.

happened upon the group one night around the campfire and described them as similar to the Mollyjogger minnow: a small, spotted critter that is unappealing bait, even to typically non-discriminating turtles and gar; “worthless when out on t he creek—fa r f rom t heir homes a nd businesses.” The name stuck, and the attitude of casual pursuit of adventure that it connotes is just as appealing today as seasoned explorers and weekend warriors alike turn to traditional aesthetics.

Rick, a fourth-generation shopkeeper and Ozark native, is perpetually inspired by his home region’s geography and potential for outdoor exploration. “The Ozark region is blessed with pristine streams, lakes, mountains, caves and more,” says Stagner, who describes his mission as “taking

It’s a mission evidenced by Mollyjogger’s look, which combines contemporary and traditional American work-wear into products that are both functional and unique.

Storytelling is sewn into Mollyjogger’s DNA, and many of the products are infused with Ozark folklore. Scrimshaw, or the art of engraving whalebone with intricate designs and colors, is a traditional folk art that has been used in Arkansas for generations. This practice evolved from sailors using and personalizing materials readily available during their maritime adventures.

Mollyjogger’s kit enables buyers to etch and engrave their own designs into a pocket knife for a unique and personalized product that harkens back to ancient, sea-borne adventures.

The goal upon founding was to create a sustainable support platform for multi-use trail systems in the central Arkansas region. Finding peace and inspiration in the Arkansas wilderness STORY & PHOTOS BY SPENCER GRIFFITH Several years ago, I had a moment of reflection where I stopped and took stock of where I was spending all my time. I was so focused on building a career, establishing myself in a new community and starting a family that I completely lost track of why I moved back to Arkansas. I had spent almost two years back in my home state and barely set foot out of the city. Looking up at a clear night sky on the banks of the Buffalo River I made a commitment to myself that I would take the time to wander. That night I promised myself to spend at least one day a week exploring and finding new adventures throughout the state.

There’s something restorative about getting away from the daily grind and getting out in nature. Arkansans are blessed with a vast network of trails offering legendary thru-hikes, numerous loop trails, excellent out-and-back experiences and fantastic spur trails. You don’t have to hike the Appalachian Trail or have the endurance of the Pacific Crest Trail to enjoy a remarkable pilgrimage—the Natural State abounds with journeys that will awaken your senses and bring you back to more primitive actuality. The beauty of each backpacking trip is its unique set of challenges.

The Buffalo River Trail and Eagle Loop Trail offer some of the best backpacking in mid-America—if not the whole country. At the heart of the western Buffalo National River wilderness in northwest Arkansas, you will find the upper portion of the Buffalo River Trail (BRT). The upper BRT is 37 miles that stretch from Boxley Valley to Pruitt. It is a short enough thru-hike that it can be completed in a long weekend, but has plenty of convenient access points for backpackers to define their unique point-to-point adventure. The Eagle Loop trail is 26.8 miles in the southwestern portion of the Ouachita National Forest.

day 1 The Buffalo National River is our nation’s first national river. Thanks to Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, Arkansas Nature Conservancy, Ozark Society and a multitude of state and federal politicians, this wilderness area was preserved for us to explore. It narrowly escaped being blocked by one of the over 75,000 dams that have been constructed across our country since the early 1900s. The Buffalo River Trail treks through wilderness that would have otherwise been underwater. It is only after you experience some of the superior scenic beauty, encounter the vast array of wildlife and visit some of some of the historic home place remnants that you can appreciate what would have been lost.

For our 2016 BRT backpacking trip, we decided to take a three-day weekend and hike from Ponca to Pruitt. This trail crosses some of the state’s most spectacular vistas, Civil War-era historical sites and some of the region’s oldest frontier homesteads. The trail starts across the lowwater bridge outside Ponca off of State Highway 43. Our group drove up from Little Rock early in the morning on the first day of our hike. Before setting off, we went to the Buffalo Outdoor Center in Ponca to arrange a shuttle for our vehicle. For a reasonable rate, BOC will go pick your vehicle up from your starting point and store it at their facility until they drop it off at your final destination the morning of your last day.

We finally got on the trail around 10 a.m. after taking some time to observe some of the elk that live in Boxley Valley and were spending the morning in a small grove of trees next to the Ponca River access area.

Our plan was to take our time hiking from Ponca to Kyles Landing (9.9 trail miles) where we would meet up with the rest of our group. Most of the upper portion of the BRT travels parallel to the Buffalo National River. There are countless scenic vistas and overlooks that give gorgeous vantage points of the river below. If you are fairly familiar with the river or if you bring along a guidebook like Buffalo River Hiking Trails by Tim Ernst, you will be able to pick out some of the landmarks like Grey Rock and Roark Bluff.

After hiking through Steel Creek, we climbed to a scenic spot that looks back at Steel Creek towering over the vantage points you typically see from Roark Bluff. This section would make for a good out and back day hike from the Steel Creek campground. A short way down the trail took us to Big Bluff, then, at Beech Creek, we began a steady climb to Slaty place followed by a rapid descent down into Indian Creek. Between Indian Creek and the trail down into Kyles Landing campground, there are several fantastic primitive camp sites. Our group pushed into Kyles Landing since we had friends joining us that night.

In addition to the natural wonders along the Buffalo River, backpackers can also see cabins from the days of the pioneers, like Slatey Place.

day 2 The next morning we left camp around 8 a.m. with plans to hike just past Erbie to our day-two camp on the river. We took a more direct path back onto the trail by hiking the road out of Kyles Landing for about .9 miles where the trail crosses the road along the ridge line.

The section from Kyles to Erbie doesn’t have nearly the elevation change. This section of the trail ventures further away from the river, but is littered with trailside waterfalls and historic landmarks. Some of the most notable spots along the trail include an overlook of the Camp Orr Boy Scout camp, Triple Falls, the Bath Tubs at Rock Ridge Creek 2.9 miles in, the rock formations and river overlooks around mile 4.3, and the historical cemeteries and homesteads. Shortly after the Parker Hickmann Homestead we climbed up and around the Erbie river access area. Our group hiked back down into Erbie to meet up with some paddlers from our group that spent the day on the river. From there we hiked a mile past Erbie to a section of the trail that had a river access spur and set up camp along the river with the paddlers from our group.

The best part of meeting up with the paddlers for camp was the fresh dinner and cold beer. We made hobo meals with chicken, cauliflower, potatoes, onions and seasoning wrapped in aluminum foil and cooked in the coals in the fire. After a hot meal and a long day on the trail, the peaceful sounds of the river made for a good night’s rest.

We woke up to some slight rain and packed our gear to hit the last seven miles.

day 3 Day three took us from just past Erbie to Pruitt, right along the river. In this section, the riverbanks flatten out more, and the river begins to widen. If you stop by Adair Cemetery, you can find some graves that date back to the 1840s. Some records say at least one Confederate soldier is buried there. Cedar Grove Picnic Area is a great spot to take a break above the river before you travel on past the Ozark campgrounds. Around a mile out from Pruitt you will pass my favorite area of this section. It is a neat stream whose moss-covered rocks journey around a small pond that flanks the trail along as it follows the ridge. It makes for a nice place for a final break to recount your time on the trail before making the last trek into Pruitt. Do yourself a favor and refuel at Ozark Cafe with a good burger and milkshake before you head home. After all, you earned it.

Special note:

While you are on the Buffalo River Trail access to water is not always easily accessible. The trail is often high above the river with steep slopes to reach the water’s edge. During the rainier season, some springs and runoffs may offer acceptable water sources to filter. We made use of both water bladders and Nalgene bottles to pack water. River access points and campgrounds are often the most handy water sources.

The Eagle Rock Loop Trail has numerous water crossings, making water shoes a must.

The Eagle Rock Loop Trail has one extremely understated quality—in a 26.8-mile hike, you have the opportunity to experience some of the Natural State’s most difficult and easiest terrain. The loop is made up of three trails: the Athens Big Fork Trail, the Little Missouri Falls Trail and the Viles Branch Trail. For our spring 2016 trip, our group left out of Little Rock early one Friday morning. We met the rest of our crew for breakfast at Mt. Eda Cafe before getting on the trail. We traveled west of Mt. Eda into the national forest past the Albert Pike Recreational Area and up and around the mountain to the Athens Big Fork (ABF) northern trailhead. We opted to start with this section and travel clockwise around the loop.

The Athens Big Fork section is a technical and strenuous set of rugged climbs through mixed hardwood that goes up and over unsurfaced rocky ridges. Over the 4.9-mile trail, we crossed four mountains and an untold number of water crossings. In fact, the first crossing, at Blaylock Creek, is within sight of the parking area, meaning we started out with our water shoes on. A good pair of water shoes and a pack towel made the frequent water crossings easier. The frequency of water crossings will tempt you to continue hiking in your water shoes. There are certainly sections that crossings are frequent enough that it is a good idea. A quality map and marking the water crossings ahead of time will help you to plan those periods. However, more than one member of our group regretted hiking too long in water shoes on these slopes and their feet paid for it days later.

The ABF trail follows an old equestrian postal route. It has very few switchbacks. It is mostly steady uphill climbs littered with false summits. The four mountains on the ABF mean plenty of beautiful vistas along the way to stop for a minute and catch your breath. The difficult climbs will make it easy for you to want to skip the short spur trails, but don’t miss the view at Spirit Rock Vista. After all, you came all that way—what’s another .4 miles?

eagle rock loop trail day 2 After Hurricane Knob, the ABF Trail gives way to the Little Missouri Falls (LMF) Trail. The intersection of these trails is one of the five trail access points. If you aren’t paying attention, the transition from ABF to the Falls trail could easily be missed. All that is marking it is the sight of the parking area and a few rocks at the water crossing marked with the trail names. Once on the LMF Trail the landscape begins to level out. For the most part, you are traveling right alongside the Little Missouri River. There are plenty of amazing sites along the river to set up camp, but the further down the river you make it, the better to make the second and third days shorter.

We set up camp a few miles in so that we could enjoy the golden light coming in through the trees and hitting the river. We woke to a beautiful mist rolling through the falling along the river as the light kissed through the trees. After coffee and a hot breakfast, we set off to the Little Missouri Falls. As we hiked along the river we found amazing beds of moss and crystal-clear pools of water. The trail goes right along the falls, but it is worth hiking down and getting a closer look.

Once you get your fill of the cascading falls, you head back up into pine forest and track away and back to the river several times before you come to two water crossings at Crooked Creek. Trekking poles and water shoes make the crossings a safer and more pleasant experience, but they tend to be knee-to-waist deep. During heavy rains, they get even worse. After the crossings, we traveled along the forest floor for several miles until we reached another deep water crossing. Two more miles down the trail you will run into another trail access point. The goal for our group was to get several miles past this area and onto the Viles Branch Trail before we set camp. The Albert Pike overlook is certainly the highlight of this section. There are several premium campsites where the trail descends to the river if you can push on to those areas.

Just up from the Little Missouri Falls is a climb through the pines to some of the best vistas in the Ouachita Mountains.

day 3 Day three was spent on the Viles Branch Trail. The first three-to-four miles of this trail stay pretty level and have frequent water crossings. There are several that can get very deep in the middle and become impassable or extremely unsafe if there are heavy rains leading up and during your trip. The rock-hopping water crossings become welcomed sights as you get closer to the VBF and ABF trail intersection. The water near this junction is the last good spot to refill your water supply before pushing on to complete the loop.

The last section takes you up atop Eagle Rock Vista. The elevation gain is 420 feet and is a great spot for a camp if it isn’t too windy. If you expect wind, there are some nice spots along the saddle. With a little over three miles to complete the loop, you have the option to take a spur trail up to Brush Heap Mountain if you have any gas left in your tank. Completing the loop is both rewarding and odd. You have traveled over 26 miles to end just where you began.

Special note: Making sure you are aware of weather conditions on this backpacking trip is key to being successful. Warmer temperatures can make the already challenging mountains even more daunting. Even more important are water levels. Monitoring rainfall for weeks leading up to your trip and expecting rainfall during your trip are key to being safe. This area experiences rapid changes in water levels that can make certain water crossings along the trail impassable or unsafe.

While this is a loop trail, keep in mind that there are four other access points along the trail. Parking an extra vehicle at one of these points on the opposite side of the loop can be a good safety net in case you need backup supplies or someone gets hurt on the trail and cannot continue for the full loop.

Last year, when the Physical Activity Council released its Fitness and Leisure Activities Topline Participation Report, adventure racing came out on top of the “fastest growing” sports category with an increase of over 20 percent. To folks who have competed in these unique races, such growth in popularity won’t come as a surprise—the sheer thrilling challenge and variety of activities involved in a typical adventure race make these events a must-do for adrenaline junkies of all stripes.

Of course, a growth in popularity doesn’t necessarily translate to the general public knowing what something is, so perhaps we should start out with the most important question: Just what the heck is an adventure race, anyway? involving teams that race for hours through stages that often involve mounta in biking, foot racing, paddling various waterways and even rappelling. And if that isn’t enough, teams must navigate the pathways of each stage on their ow n, of ten using not hing but topographic maps and compasses.

In winter, adventure racers flock to Raid the Rock in Little Rock, which hopes in its 16th year to reinstitute the paddle portion of the race that was canceled last year due to rain and dangerous water conditions last year. Still, despite the uncooperative weather, racers faced extreme situations during the foot and bike portions of the event—starting with the 35-degree starting temperature.

Even without the paddle section, the 2015 Raid the Rock course covered 24 miles of biking and 12 miles on foot, with checkpoints located in hard-to-reach spots like the middle of a creek or a culvert underneath the interstate.

Further north, the springtime brings adventure racers to Pack Rat Outdoor Center’s Brewhabushwhack at Byrd’s Adventure Center in Ozark. Unlike Raid the Rock (and other adventure races), this race isn’t dependent on fast times, but rather points awarded for teams that complete tasks. In the Brewhabushwhack, teams can complete their checkpoints in any order—but all checkpoints must be located in order to receive the most points. In addition to these navigational points, teams earn extra rewards by completing survival tasks such as fire-building (without use of lighters or matches), knot-tying, knowledge of local flora and more. It’s an interesting spin on the concept.

Because of t he cha llenges associated with these races, there’s never a dull moment in an adventure race—which explains the explosive growth in popularity the sport has experienced in recent years.

Summertime means swimming time in Arkansas, and Natural Dam is just one of the hot spots that will get you cool.

Arkansas summer heat is hard to beat, with only a few ways to truly cool down when the temperatures rise. The real winners: shady groves, ice-cold watermelon and sweet swimming holes.

It’s to this latter end that we look at some of the state’s more secluded spots for a relaxing dip.

Here are eight top picks for whiling away a summer afternoon:

NATURAL DAM | CEDARVILLE

This eponymous rock formation along Mountain Fork Creek in Crawford County is an all-natural slab of stone that forms an eight-foot-high, 187-foot-long barrier behind which a lovely pool is held. The pebbled bottom of the creek’s gradient allows for both beginner and advanced swimmers to enjoy the water. When there’s rain, waterfalls form along the leng th of the dam.

From Interstate 40 at Van Buren, head north 15 miles on Highway 59, then turn left on Natural Dam road.

Central Arkansas swimming hole lovers have long called this treasure a woods-surrounded paradise. Located 38 miles from Little Rock, this U.S. Forest Service-operated site was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the northernmost section of the Ouachita National Forest. The old dock is a jumping-off point for more adventuresome swimmers. There is a $1 per person or $3 per car entry fee for individuals wishing to swim. This is also a good lake to bank-catch catfish. Flush restrooms and picnic tables are nearby. Take Arkansas Highway 10 35 miles west of Little Rock to Williams Junction, then turn left on Highway 324 and go 3.7 miles to the lake.

Also known as Chidester Canyon, this stunning rock formation on the north side of White Oak Lake is tucked into the woods on the lake’s northwest shore. Cross the dike, park at the dead end and take a trail down to this natural wonder. There’s not much secluded about this residentially encircled lake located mostly within Hot Springs’ borders, but the swimming is excellent. Best place to visit? Hill Wheatley Park, not far from Airport Road, which offers a light sandy beach and some great views on the north end of the lake.

There are restrooms, picnic tables and a drinking fountain available, and the swimming is free. From U.S. Highway 70/Airport Road head west on Majestic Lodge Road one mile, then turn onto McDonald Loop and follow signs.

WHY DID YOU BECOME A GUIDE? I always loved the outdoors. From the time I was a small child, I always spent a lot of time outdoors. I went to grad school, got a job, and then in grad school that idea came around and I thought “I could probably make some money doing this.”

WHAT DREW YOU TO THE OZARK REGION? I’ve been hiking and backpacking and climbing in the Ozarks forever. It's home.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HIKING TRAIL IN ARKANSAS? I like to take people to the most rugged and wild parts of Arkansas. Most of them are off the grid, but Rock Creek, just east of Ash Flat, and Leatherwood Wilderness near Norfork are amazing. I want to expose people to other stuff.

The good stuff isn’t on a trail, or in a book.

WHAT KINDS OF TRIPS DO YOU GUIDE, AND DO THEY VARY IN LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY? We guide everything from easy family friendly to moderate and more strenuous hikes. We love to expose everyone to the Ozarks.

WHAT TRAINING OR CERTIFICATIONS DO YOU HAVE? I’m a member of the American Mountain Guides Association and a board member of the American Hiking Guides Association. I am a certified hiking guide, backpacking guide and mountain leader.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU ALWAYS TAKE WITH YOU WHEN YOU GO HIKING? Dark chocolate and my survival kit.

BEING A GUIDE IS YOUR CAREER, HOW DOES THIS CHANGE OR INFLUENCE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE OUTDOORS? It allows me to spend more time out there, and it also enables me to expose and teach people about the outdoors. I think of it as a great opportunity to teach people to be safe and to enjoy the outdoors.

WHAT MAKES YOUR GUIDING SERVICE UNIQUE? We only use certified guides. Lots of people can say they’re guides, but ours are actually certified.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR BEGINNING HIKERS? Everyone thinks they can just go out in the woods, and I just think that people take it for granted. You can get hurt. It’s not Walt Disney World. Get trained.

YOU’VE SPENT A LOT OF TIME GUIDING IN THE OZARKS, BUT WHERE ELSE HAS GUIDING TAKEN YOU? I’ve led trips on five continents and in 22 countries, in the most rugged and wild places on Earth. Some of the highlights would be Patagonia, Nepal, Tibet, Iceland, Africa, Beirut and Alaska.

NEW TRADITIONS Lobo Landing has renovated and expanded, but remains a classic getaway

A NEW START

Lobo Landing has been a prime spot to put in along the Little Red River near Heber Springs for more than three decades.

New owners Beau and Renee Saunders have revitalized this north-central Arkansas escape and given it new life.

“The previous owners put Lobo Landing up for auction last July, and the cabins and the marina were all sold off to different folks,” says Renee Saunders. “After the auction, the lady who bought the marina asked Beau to be the official guide there.” Not long afterwards, the marina owner offered the marina for sale to the Saunders, so they went in with a couple of friends and purchased the facility.

It was an easy decision for the Saunders, who have lived near the Little Red River their entire lives. “I grew up in Pangburn about 10 minutes from here,” Renee Saunders continues. “I used to walk down to the Dripping Springs boat launch there. I have fished here all my life. My husband and I both grew up on this river.”

FISH, FLOAT AND FOOD

The resort offers just about anything someone would need for a stay. Beau Saunders still functions as the marina’s fishing guide. There are kayaks and canoes to rent out, and the Saunders operate Lobo Grill, a kitchen offering breakfast and lunch at the landing. Lobo Landing also offers fly-tying classes. There are 14 cabins available for rent, all listed on the Lobo Landing website. Some of the cabins have Wi-Fi for guests who must remain connected for business purposes: Renee says this is an excellent place to unplug from it all. “Just unhook and get yourself away from it all, get out on the dock, go out on a boat and catch some fish!” she says with a laugh.

Lobo draws its clientele from all across the country.

“Folks come in from surrounding states and California and all over the place. They’ve been coming here since they were kids and now they’re bringing their kids and grandkids. It's such a wonderful blessing that Beau and I have here.”

GET OUT INTO THE SURROUNDINGS

Even though Lobo Landing is secluded from the busy world beyond, it’s still close enough to Heber Springs to enjoy great free attractions and activities, along with a fine selection of local restaurants. Renee recommends stopping in at the William Carl Garner Visitors Center and John F. Kennedy Park at Greers Ferry Dam, visiting the area’s many parks, climbing Sugarloaf Mountain (see editor Michael Roberts' adventure on the trail in the spring edition of Arkansas Wild) and scoping out great waterfalls such as the famed Bridal Veil Falls nearby.

STAY IN AND RELAX

If you don’t want to hop in the car, you can make a full vacation of it. Most of the cabins have kitchenettes if you want to prepare your own food, or you can have meals prepared and brought to you at your cabin from the grill.

The Saunders love this place, and cannot imagine life away from this gorgeous river. As Renee puts it, “Some people go out to eat and go to hotels and go out for Valentine’s Day and holidays and vacations. My husband and I always just went out and fished. We’re hard workers anyway, and we might as well do something we love.”
