OUR LITTLE ROCK Little Rock’s charming communities are found at every turn. Having happily lived here my whole life here, become an adult here and now raising children here, I have gladly watched my city grow and change as a home and as an exciting place to visit. With the beauty of its nature and people, Little Rock is truly an example of how a city this size can have a huge heart. And how having a huge heart makes for a wonderful place to explore. Our city has such a wide array of restaurants, art, parks and shopping in all of the neighborhoods listed here. It is worth exploring all of them. Enjoy your time imagining the past in areas like the 2010 block of Battery Street near K Hall & Sons, and The Governor’s Mansion District. Take time to check out the unique architecture and design of some of these buildings and homes. Shop the historic downtown districts where you can find unique and locally owned shops like the ‘Beyond the Divide’ 9th Street black-owned business corridor, or Bella Vita Jewelry & Gifts. We come from many walks of life and find ourselves together celebrating in neighborhood events like SOMA Pride, the Hillcrest 4th of July Parade, the public schools’ sports games, or eating out in some of our amazing restaurants like Fantastic China or Ya Ya’s Euro Bistro. Little Rock shines when it’s a community event because the people are in it to support their communities back. Pinnacle Mountain and Emerald Park are just a short drive away for a supercharged dose of nature. And with Little Rock so centrally located, day trips are easy as well. Those who know me know my love of Little Rock runs deep. I have gratitude for having traveled the world and I have gratitude for being able to come home here. This city and its people are as diverse as anywhere in the country, if on a different scale, and diversity is wonderful. Diversity brings new food, new events and new reasons for our communities to come together. On that note, one theme I hope you notice in the “Meet the Neighbor” sections is how many people reflect their love of their community in Little Rock. How meeting your neighbors and living in spaces where you know each other means so much. I hope you take away a new love and appreciation for our city.
BRIAN CHILSON
And please note, in this publication we explore major neighborhoods that travelers in our city may find of interest, but it is by no means all Little Rock has to offer.

Would you recommend your neighborhood to people with pets? Or children? It’s definitely a pet-friendly community with a lot of green space and local dog walkers. And we see lots of children walking around the neighborhood, which gives us a great sense of community and growth. What’s a hidden gem in your neighborhood you’d recommend? We love going to Sonny Williams [Steakhouse] and hearing Jim play standards on the piano there. What are some of your favorite neighborhood annual events or traditions? Dugan’s Pub always has fun events and it’s great to see the community gathering on the street below. If someone were considering moving to your neighborhood, what one piece of advice would you give them? We’re excited about the new businesses moving in and Unwine & Co is a great addition to our neighborhood. The revamped library is a gorgeous addition and Ron Robinson [Theater] regularly hosts movie nights and other events. The biggest thing I would say is that downtown is safe, friendly and has plenty of parking. Smile, make eye contact and get to know your neighbors!

he MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History interprets our state’s military heritage and honors the contributions of Arkansans who served in conflicts from the territorial period to the present. It is located in the historic Arsenal Building, a National Historic Landmark and one of Little Rock’s oldest surviving structures. Built in 1840 to protect a frontier state from attack by Native Americans, it witnessed pivotal exchanges between Federal and Confederate forces during the Civil War, and later became the birthplace of General Douglas MacArthur. Through exhibits and programming, the museum ensures that“old soldiers never die.” Instead, their sacrifice and service are preserved for future generations.

Beyond the Divide: The Line at 9 is a community revitalization project in downtown on West 9th Street. Shop the many Black-owned pop-up boutiques while learning about the history of one of Little Rock’s former economic hubs. This community-built project was formed to celebrate Black history and to acknowledge the divide brought by Little Rock’s Interstate 630, also known as “the divide.” Now, in bringing people together with shopping, food and events like movie nights for the family in the grassy courtyard, Beyond the Divide is a highly recommended stop downtown. Food trucks of all sorts are ever-present. And it’s right by the historic Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, Dreamland Ballroom, and the long mural on lower 7th Street. Street parking and some lot parking is available. Check out their Instagram for updates on vendors, food trucks, and further development.

Nestled in downtown Little Rock since 1988, Doe’s is known by their customers as “One of the best restaurants in the South.” The restaurant is delightfully busy and full of kitchen noise. It’s how you know it’s good food, cooked right. Steaks are first-come, first-serve nightly—porterhouse, sirloin or t-bone—and are big enough for sharing at 3 to 6 pounds. Security is also available for street parking. You might run into a local celebrity, or at least find a famous face or two among the photos on the wall. Offering traditional Southern Italian cuisine, Bruno’s makes most ingredients in-house and the difference is amazing. Neapolitan pizzas, homemade pasta, choice meats and incredible desserts pack the menu. Since everything is made to order, you will have a bit longer of a wait. The menu has children’s portions of tried and true pasta dishes. With all original craft brews, many of which can be bought throughout Arkansas, Lost 40 is a great place to hang. Another brewery of note in the area is Southern Tail Brewing. Also founded in Arkansas, this East Village hang out has a beautiful outdoor beer garden and patio. Their craft beers are known for their rich flavors and distinctive profiles. Both locations offer plenty of parking.

What neighborhood are you in and What do you love most about living and/or working in your neighborhood? I live in the East Village area. Directly behind the new yacht club. I absolutely love watching this area and watching it develop. Having a breathtaking view of the river along with being seconds from downtown provides a near perfect experience of both quiet and adventure.
If someone were considering moving to your neighborhood, what one piece of advice would you give them? Come and sit a spell. The quiet and river life being right next to downtown is the most unique experience in town!

oMa (South on Main Street) is the funky cousin to the other Little Rock neighborhoods. The experience of its shopping and dining are why you come here, or for one of its many neighborhood-celebrating parades or events. Walking this area, which has plenty of parking, leads you to a variety of eating options and the shopping leans eclectic gifts.
The SoMa and Pettaway neighborhoods may be small but they are mighty. The community is involved in sustainably growing their area and nothing shows this more than the Bernice Garden and The Farmers Market held there. This area is also well-known for its parades like PRIDE and SoMardi Gras. Little Rock Central High School holds a significant place in both educational history and the American Civil Rights Movement. Constructed in 1927 and originally known as Little Rock Senior High School, it was celebrated as “America’s Most Beautiful High School” and was the largest in the nation at that time. Its crucial role in the Civil Rights Movement led to its designation as a National Historic Site in 1998. It remains the sole operating high school to be listed as such. A visitor center and museum situated across the street offer insights into the desegregation crisis and the broader Civil Rights Movement. Located just a hop, skip and jump away from SoMa. 1500 S. SoMa and Pettaway neighborhood restaurants and bars feel very local, very inviting. From the craft bartenders and awesome servers at Raduno Brick Oven & Barroom (also homemade pasta!), to the sizzling grill after waiting in line to order at K Hall & Sons Produce, these restaurants know their stuff. Brunch at El Sur Street Food Co. is a delightful service of Honduran favorites, and the drinks are freshly made and thirst quenching. Rex’s Restaurant serves what they call ‘classic American comfort food with bold Asian flavors’. You won’t find anything like it in Little Rock. And when you’re tired and just need a good meal, The Root Cafe always has your back with locally procured ingredients. What’s a hidden gem in your neighborhood you’d recommend? A hidden gem I am particularly partial to is Paper Hearts Bookstore. On top of providing a curated selection of both children’s and adult literature, we strive to be a place of community gathering and engagement. We host local authors, artists, bookclubs, craft-night, petition signings, and more. I also love it when our neighbors just stop by to sit in our comfy chairs and chat. It truly feels like no where else in Little Rock. What are some of your favorite neighborhood annual events or traditions? My favorite neighborhood tradition is definitely Friday Night Jazz. Moody Brews (delicious beer, food, and cocktails) hosts free jazz in the courtyard of Pettaway Square. They create a vibe that is unmatched while you can sit at a picnic table with my friends and neighbors. If someone were considering moving to your neighborhood, what one piece of advice would you give them? My advice would be to involve yourself. Wander the neighborhood, say hello to business owners, and neighbors. It is so easy and so rewarding to become a familiar face around here.

What neighborhood are you in and what do you love most about living and/or working in your neighborhood? I live in Argenta, and love living here for the walkability, food and entertainment [nearby]. Would you recommend your neighborhood to people with pets? Or with children? Argenta has several bars with regular live music, a cabaret, restaurants, bookstore and a walkable downtown area near [Simmons] arena that skews adult, in my experience. But Dogtown is pet–friendly for sure. What’s a hidden gem in your neighborhood you’d recommend? The hidden gem for me is the biscuits and gravy at The Blackberry Market. What are some of your favorite neighborhood annual events or traditions? There are several events in Argenta throughout the year, but the one I never miss is the annual crawfish boil. If someone were considering moving to your neighborhood, what one piece of advice would you give them? Take a walk around the neighborhood. What neighborhood are you in and what do you love most about living and/or working in your neighborhood? The people have to be my favorite! I have lived in the historic Hillcrest neighborhood for almost 20 years and couldn’t imaging living anywhere else. And in 2025, Lacey Duncan Photography made the move to the main street [Kavanaugh]. I love the feeling of ‘we’ that is apparent everyday among neighbors and businesses. Would you recommend your neighborhood to people with pets? Or with children? Hillcrest is a great place to raise a family or a pack! Allsopp Park has many access points for easy hikes with kids or pets. There is a popular girls’ softball league and baseball for the boys at Junior Deputy (just further down). Prospect and Knoop Park are also great little neighborhood spots. What’s a hidden gem in your neighborhood you’d recommend? I am not sure how hidden it is but Hillcrest’s food game is strong. I love being able to walk from home or the studio for coffee and pastries, to small-batch ice cream, Czech, Mexican, and Brazilian food, or just a good burger, all nearby. You will not go hungry in Hillcrest. What are some of your favorite neighborhood annual events or traditions? The Ice Cream Social in July is great for children. Harvestfest has always been a favorite of my family’s. The Hillcrest Residence Association’s 4th of July parade and public reading of the Declaration of Independence is a great local event. Also the lighting of the Christmas tree at the Promenade on Kavanaugh. If someone were considering moving to your neighborhood, what one piece of advice would you give them? Get out in the neighborhood and be ready to make some friends! Keep an eye out for the crosswalks [and pedestrians everywhere] as you drive down Kavanaugh. It is a very walkable community, and people are out and about every day.
Hillcrest Farmers Market
This delightful, just perfectly-sized farmers market provides a wide range of home-grown veggies and fruit, artisan vendors, and a regular chicken farmer who loves to educate children. You can frequently find community information, like for voter registration. Bring the family, a tote bag, and cash as a back up. Street parking is available. Saturday mornings, May-September, 8 a.m. - noon. Winter hours, October-April , are 8 a.m. - 11 a.m. 2200 Kavanaugh Blvd., Little Rock
First Thursdays
For the first Thursday of every month, Hillcrest comes alive with a large-scale neighborhood party. Park along the outskirts on a residential street and walk to the local shops staying open late. On this special night, attendees can carry their drinks outside to explore Kavanaugh’s shops, restaurants, and outdoor entertainment. There are frequently specials and deals on drinks and food.
Hillcrest HarvestFest
Oct. 17, 2026, 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. One of the most anticipated to events of the year, Hillcrest HarvestFest is a giant celebration taking over Kavanaugh. Packed with local businesses selling handmade wares, local food trucks and restaurants, live music, and lots of family fun. This year will continue the beloved tradition of the Dog Costume Show. This event is a must.

Eating in Hillcrest is a very fun experience because the neighborhood is so lively and full of people. In lower Hillcrest, The Oyster Bar serves delicious, fresh seafood and great drinks. They often have live music, too, making it a great place for adults. A family hit that’s an equally perfect choice for a girls’ night is El Mezcal. Serving great Mexican and delicious drinks (Tajin rim if you ask!), this restaurant is always abuzz. If you are wanting something more upscale for your taste buds, Cafe Bossa Nova is this town’s secret gem for a date night. Serving Brazilian, on a little corner with lots of windows, it’s a great restaurant to cozy up. And if burgers, gyros, cheap canned beers and outdoor picnic tables are your thing, you have to visit Leo’s Greek Castle. They serve excellent breakfast, lunch and dinner in the heart of Hillcrest. The kids love it for their Leo the Lion coloring sheets. A few adults, too.

Burge’s Hickory Smoked Turkeys and Hams
T
he Heights is one of the older Little Rock neighborhoods with a bevy of shops and restaurants along upper Kavanaugh Boulevard. The restaurants range from family friendly to fine dining and the shops lean towards latest trends. The neighborhood works to keep the historic feel alive, so be sure to walk tree-lined Kavanuagh and see the bronze sculptures along the way.
While in the Heights to eat or shop, be sure to take some time to stroll Kavanaugh Boulevard, and enjoy the landscaping of trees and flowers along the way. Grab a coffee at Boulevard Bread Co. and enjoy the bronze sculpture of ‘Abracadabra’ across the street while you walk past plenty of shops to the other giant bronze sculpture of ‘The Bunny.ʼ Local neighborhood florist and gift shop, Tipton & Hurst, decorate it seasonally. While walking the length of Kavanaugh, by the California-Mexican restaurant Baja Grill, down to Burge’s Hickory Smoked Turkeys and Hams, then by the classic New American menu of Cheers in the Heights, and the wood-

oven smells of The Pizzeria, you should be hungry and have a good idea of the neighborhood offerings. Finish your night with a gourmet popsicle at Le Pops, or an ice cream scoop at Caked Up. Or for the adults, grab a glass of wine at the speakeasy, Barnaby, at George’s Little Rock. And if you are wanting to shop, there are multiple home decor shops like Cobblestone & Vine, women’s clothing options for all ages of women and men, like Steamroller Blues, Toggery, and Mr. Wick’s Men’s Clothing. Street parking is available, some parking lots are available, and walking is easiest for seeing the whole neighborhood. Pro tip: Watch out for the golf carts!

Heights
Would you recommend your neighborhood to people with pets? Or with Children? YES! The Heights is so pet and family friendly. There are always people out walking their dogs, parents pushing strollers and kids riding bikes. What’s a hidden gem in your neighborhood you’d recommend? I’d say WordsWorth Books, my bookstore that I co-own with Lia Lent and fellow Heights resident Kandi West, but since it’s been around for nearly 40 years, it’s not so hidden! It is a gem, though! Instead, I would say ‘The Mad Hatter’ sculpture at the promenade at the intersection of Kavanaugh and Grant and ‘The Bunny’ sculpture in front of Mugs that Tipton & Hurts decorates for each season. They are both whimsical and add charm to our neighborhood.

What are some of your favorite neighborhood annual events or traditions? Our annual kickoff to the holiday season, Holidays in the Heights. It is held on the first Sunday of November and is full of fun activities, live music, sales and specials. Plus, Santa & Mrs. Claus parade down Kavanaugh from the Post Office to The Toggery where kids can get their photos made with the man himself! There is a trolley that is free to hop on and off to make the most of the day throughout the Heights business district. If someone were considering moving to your neighborhood, what one piece of advice would you give them? Visit the neighborhood often. Take walks, shop in our stores, eat in our restaurants and just get a good feel for the Heights. That way you can figure out which part of our neighborhood suits you best. Moving to the Heights has been so amazing for our family and I am spoiled happy to be here!
Where To
Eat & Drink
Dining in the Heights provides plenty of options throughout the day. Burge’s Hickory Smoked Turkeys and Hams is a huge lunch spot for the area. The delicious smoked turkey, served many ways, is also available to go if you don’t have time to wait. Scallions, a light lunch spot, is popular among the neighbors too for its consistently good salads and soups. They also have great to-go options. For game days, Prospect Sports Bar has great wings and every sport is always playing on their many television screens, making this a popular night spot too. For dinner, Heights Taco & Tamale Co. usually has a wait at popular times but also has a hidden gem of a bar inside. And shout out to Mucho Loco for serving great fajitas and ice cold beers rain, sleet, or snow. Street parking is available and there are nearby lots.

What neighborhood are you in and what do you love most about living and/or working in your neighborhood? AlchemyXXII is located in Midtown, right at the edge of Hillcrest. One of my favorite things about being here is how connected the local business community is. There’s a genuine spirit of collaboration instead of competition, and it’s inspiring to work around people who are passionate about making Little Rock a more vibrant place. I also love how our neighborhood is always evolving…creating a unique mix of history, creativity and community. Would you recommend your neighborhood to people with pets? Or with children? Absolutely. Midtown has very walkable areas and pet-friendly areas with beautiful shaded streets that make it enjoyable to get outside. I see people walking their dogs and families strolling every day.

What’s a hidden gem in your neighborhood you’d recommend? One thing I love most about our location is that we are right next door to Fletcher Library, which has such a beautiful building and open space, and is such a great resource for families. I also recommend coming by to see my store, AlchemyXXII, as the newest addition to the Midtown neighborhood. What are some of your favorite neighborhood annual events or traditions? I always enjoy the local farmers markets, like the one at Westover Hills, and to watch local businesses participate in neighborhood sponsorships and seasonal events at War Memorial Park. If someone were considering moving to your neighborhood, what one piece of advice would you give them? Get to know your local businesses and the people behind them. This neighborhood is built on relationships, and once you start supporting local shops, the wide variety of restaurants, and community events in Midtown, you’ll quickly realize how welcoming everyone is.
