2013 was a very special year for the Arkansas Alumni Association. While we proudly celebrated our 135th year since our founding, the alumni staff and dedicated volunteers continued to increase and improve engagement, develop innovative ways to communicate, and create additional resources to support our many programs on behalf of alumni and friends. For the first time in its history, in a single year, more than $1 million in scholarship support was provided to 450 deserving students. It was a remarkable achievement, given our humble beginning in 1990 when $6,200 was given to nine students. Other important milestones for 2013 include: • The largest Black Alumni Reunion gathering in history, with 4,598 attendees • A new sponsorship program that generated more than $200,000 in additional revenue • A revamped Alumni Awards Celebration that saw increased attendance and a new venue • Innovative communication strategies to all alumni that have increased connections online and through social media • Increased awareness across campus for what the Alumni Association accomplishes each year • A new intern program that provides 16 students per year a work experience at the Association • A more strategic approach to alumni and student engagement, by reorganizing our regional networks, re-evaluating and improving our current outreach programs, and focusing on new methods to involve young alumni and students in the life of the University • Another stellar Homecoming Week – the biggest ever, with 300 volunteers and fundraising efforts that led to 14,466 food items donated to the Full Circle Campus Food Pantry, and $14,484 donated to the March of Dimes There are too many additional successes to mention here, but as you review this year’s annual report, you can’t help but note the positive changes we’ve made to serve our alumni and friends. We remain one of the most successful alumni membership programs in the country, with one in five alumni choosing to become members. We couldn’t do what we do without our members, and we thank you for your support. We at the Arkansas Alumni Association look forward to serving our 26,000 members and 135,000 alumni in ways that connect them to the University and to each other. Get ready for 2014, where new milestones are on the horizon! With Pride in Arkansas, Arkansas Alumni Association Staff

Scholarships
What a year we experienced for the Arkansas Alumni Association’s scholarship program - awarding more than $1 million in scholarships to 450 outstanding University of Arkansas students! From a program that began in 1990 with $6,200 in awards, this is a monumental achievement and represents thousands of individuals across the world who believe in giving back and investing in our students. One million dollars awarded in one academic year. While it’s a number we shouted from the rooftops, I’ve discovered over the past 10 years of overseeing this program that it’s not about numbers, it’s about people. And it takes a lot of people to make this program a success. From the small group of board members who dreamed up the vision of a scholarship program in the late 1980s to the scholarship selection committee members who identify our recipients each year, this program has always relied on passionate individuals who believe in the University of Arkansas. Alumni Association members, U of A license plate owners, regional networks and societies, and a growing number of individuals with endowed
scholarships fund our program. If you count yourself among one or more of these groups, give yourself a pat (or a million) on the back for your role in our success. And know that your investment is supporting some incredible students. Our scholars can be found in nearly every student group on campus, studying abroad across the world, securing internships that allow them to gain valuable experience, winning prestigious awards, volunteering within the community and ultimately leaving their legacy at the U of A. Throughout the years I’ve had the absolute pleasure of witnessing the life change that occurs for so many of our scholarship recipients during their time on campus. A scholarship, simply put, can open doors and a world of opportunities for a recipient, and as the new year began, so did our plans for the next group of alumni scholars. In late February 2014 our scholarship selection committee identified the 25th class of alumni scholars, and now we enter our silver anniversary year for the Alumni Scholarship program. Knowing what we’ve achieved in the last 25 years, I can only imagine our impact in the future. Sincerely,
Robin January Scholarship Coordinator

Alumni Endowed Scholar “The Alumni Endowed Scholarship has been an incredible blessing in my life. Not only will it help me financially throughout college, but it provides me with the confidence and motivation to realize my potential and to pursue my life goals the most important aspect of this scholarship is that it surrounds you with a huge network of people that just want to see you succeed and will provide whatever necessary for you to seize that success. No amount of money in the world can buy that kind of support and it is far and away the aspect of this scholarship that I am most grateful for.”

Celebrating 135 Years Through the Years In 1878, the board of trustees of Arkansas Industrial University issued a resolution that the university would keep a record of its graduates. Thus, the Alumni Association was formed. Since then, many memorable events have occurred to engage alumni. The first Homecoming was held in 1922, inviting alumni back to campus. A few years later, in 1925, the first “reunion” was held in conjunction with commencement. In 1944, the first alumni award, the Citation of Distinguished Alumni, was created to honor the achievements of graduates. Throughout the 1950s and ’60s, the Alumni Association moved from Hill Hall to Old Main to Lindell Street before the new Alumni Center was built on the corner of Maple Street and Razorback Road where the expanded Janelle Y. Hembree Alumni House sits today.
1938 The editorial offices of the Arkansas Alumnus, the magazine of the Arkansas Alumni Association, were located in 202 University Hall (Old Main).
1991 The Alumni Association Scholarship Program is endowed with two scholarships distributed.
1988 Myron D. “Mike” Macechko was appointed executive director and remained in that position until his retirement in 2011.
14
Celebrating 135 Years 1994 The Razorback License Plate program, also known as Hog Tags, is created with $25 of each license plate supporting academic scholarships.
1998 The Student Alumni Board is formed, serving as the primary outreach from the Alumni Association to the student body.
2009 Dr. Jeff Johnson BA’70 and his wife, Marcia, endow the Johnson Fellows Program to bring prominent alumni back to the U of A campus to engage and inspire current students.
1999 The expanded alumni center, now known as the Janelle Y. Hembree Alumni House, opens.
2002 A new tradition with the unveiling of the University of Arkansas Official Ring is unveiled.

Andy Albertson
Director of Communications, School of Law “Our partnership with the Alumni Association is helping us connect with our graduates more effectively. We’re already seeing an uptick in alumni involvement in our trial competitions and career fairs, and we’ve gotten great feedback on the monthly email newsletter the Alumni Association designed and manages for us. We look forward to even greater collaboration with the Alumni Association in the future.”

Susan Wallace Owner/Partner, Vantage Point Communications, LLC “Working with the Arkansas Alumni Association on behalf of Butterfield Trail Village and The Dickson was wonderful. The staff was organized and the communication was great. The events were awesome. But the best part was the success of the sponsorships for our clients. They were both very pleased and look forward to continuing the partnership with the Arkansas Alumni Association in 2014.”
