Outstanding Student Awards Each year, the Hispanic Celebration takes the opportunity to recognize outstanding graduating students. Nominations for these awards come from Arizona State University faculty, staff, administrators, and community members.

Dr. Cecilia D. Esquer was an Assistant Professor at ASU. As the Faculty Advisor of the Hispanic Celebration, she was the driving force that rallied students to establish the first ASU Hispanic Celebration in 1984. She was fearless and gave her heart and soul to her students. She earned three degrees from ASU, her final a Juris Doctorate. Ed Pastor served on the community advisory committee for the first ASU Hispanic Celebration in 1984. His efforts brought the necessary resources to make the first convocation a reality. In 1991, Ed Pastor became the first Hispanic from Arizona elected to Congress and served in the U. S. House of Representatives for 23 years. He earned a B.S. and a Juris Doctorate from ASU.

History of

ASU Hispanic Celebration Forty years ago, a group of ASU students, together with the support of dedicated ASU faculty and community leaders, joined forces and established the ASU Hispanic Celebration. These students blazed the trail for all of us attending the Celebration today and proved what true vision and dedication can accomplish.

The first ASU Hispanic Celebration was held on May 12, 1984 in the Town of Guadalupe at El Tianguis. Thirtyfour participants were honored by ASU, community leaders and proud families. Greg Acedo, with the Hispanic Business Students Association and David Lopez, representing MEChA, served as student co-chairs of the first-ever convocation and lead the way for students groups such as the Hispanic Education Council, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, La Raza Law Students and Minority Pre-Med Students to rally together and make a grass roots effort that today has become a significant part of ASU’s Hispanic traditions.

These students were not alone in their efforts. They were supported by leaders who shared their vision such as Congressman Ed Pastor, Dr. Cecilia Esquer, Danny Ortega and Jerry Pastor. ASU leadership must also be commended for recognizing the importance of this cultural event and taken it to the level of success we see here today. It is our hope that, as we look to the future, we also may look to the past and the foundations provided by our graduates. Their achievements continue to be the stepping stones for generations to come.
