MANAGING DIRECTOR & VIDEO POKER GURU Elizabeth Torma liz@azgamingguide.com

ou may recall my discussion last January about the Numerology perspective on the number of the New Year. This year, 2024, reduces to the number 8 and is a composition of 0, 2, and 4.

The number 2 in Numerology refers to the Moon, which occurs twice (2024) meaning the New Year may bring money, work, jobs, abundance, monetary gain, emotions, and feelings. The number 4 is associated through Numerology with an imaginary planet in Astrology which can bring new technology, ideas, quick gains and opportunities. The number 8 in Numerology is connected to the planet Saturn which symbolizes hard work, karma, abundance, leadership, ambition, and obligations. Putting this all in perspective, we can expect many positive experiences throughout the year including prosperity in the area of finance and work. However, because of the connection to emotions, feelings, karma, and obligations, we should all be wary and cautious when we encounter the positive during the New Year, especially if the situation you find yourself in is taking place quickly. And that is a basic Numerology rundown on 2024. Have A Lucky Year!

PLAYERS TALK By Mark Novak

MULTIPLE PROBLEMS AT ONE CASINO And None Of Them Have Anything To Do With The Slots Or Games

I enjoy going to [a casino]. But lately there has been too many problems. Can you please look into them? One is at the snack bar. There aren't enough cashiers and cooks to help us. They take too long to ask what we want to order. Plus the food is getting really bad. Another problem is the waiters. They’re becoming too rude when you ask for a drink. Also, can you smoke pot inside the casino? Every time I go in I smell pot coming out of the men's bathroom and lady’s also. Furthermore, another problem is the hotel. Why do the maids have to knock so many times? One is enough. We know when we are supposed to check out. The main concern we all have is why doesn’t the casino make a handicapped room for the people? Their electric chairs, canes and walkers are in our way all the time. Some don’t even put them aside. There should be a special room for them.

in. I thought the customer was first in the “Good old US of A!” Just remember, you do have a choice. The casinos count on the fact that you will continue to enjoy being beaten over the head by their games, and their employees, and their amenities, and other guests, and keep coming back for more. If, as you claim, you’ve already made casino management aware of the problem and there has been no change, honestly, leave. Find another place to play. Don’t wait for change. Don’t ask for change again. Don’t wait for another situation to happen. Just go somewhere else. If that doesn’t help, go to the next one. There are plenty of options to choose from all across Arizona. Then there’s Laughlin and Vegas as well. The scooters, walkers, canes, etc. strewn about the hotel hallways can also be reported to the Tribal fire department, or your local fire department. I’m sure they’ll have something to say about it! Clearly security does not patrol the hotel hallways. Or, if they do, they are obviously fools. Just leave, it’s not safe.

A lot of us are complaining about it. Please look into it. Thank you for reading the problems that are at the casinos. I enjoy reading your articles every month. Rafael Quiroz—Arizona

Regarding smoking pot on a reservation, according to statements made by the federal government, each Tribe has to make their own rules regarding the legality of smoking, possessing, selling, distributing, and manufacturing marijuana. The federal government will support a Tribe if they comply with a state’s marijuana laws, and they will support a Tribe if they comply with the federal marijuana laws (where marijuana is considered a controlled substance). Confused? Me too!

Hi Rafael! We appreciate your letter and understand your concerns. We have also experienced similar issues, not just at the casino you mention, but around the country. We can attempt to reach out to the casino, but in this particular situation, I’m not sure it will be of much use.

The simple solution for all Tribal casinos in Arizona would be to put up signs stating, “No smoking or vaping indoors. Tobacco use and vaping is permitted in designated outdoor areas.” But then, of course, security would be expected to enforce that rule too. If they can’t keep a hallway clear, why stop a stoner?

Why? Aside from the fire hazards you mention, poor or rude service, bad food, etc., are the norm, and not just at the casinos! I went to a home improvement store recently and the customer service was nonexistent. And don’t get me started on the grocery stores! Yikes! Sometimes I wonder what country I’m living

Some people are OK with the scent of burning marijuana. Personally, I can’t stand the smell of the skunk weed now. Even the smallest whiff makes me nauseated and also quickly induces a headache. Rafael, Have Fun & Good Luck at another casino! $

Some people are rude also. They get mad when we ask them, “Please move your walker.”

Thank you to our readers for your questions and comments, we appreciate you! Write us at Editor@AZGamingGuide.com or by mail at Editor, AZ Gaming Guide, PO BOX 20636, Mesa, AZ, 85277.

Reel Review

By Mark Novak

Triple The Thrill By Scientific Games

H

ow sweet it is to play Triple the Thrill—Honey Hearts with all the vibrant sunflower and sun graphics! The Top Up feature is triggered during the Base Game or Free Game by 6 or more scattered Sunflower symbols, awarding 3 spins. It’s not a sticky situation when the Honey Reel symbol is triggered on reels 2, 3 and 4, awarding 1 Divine Reel spin. Players will find the key to possibly unlock a grid for each Heart symbol, collecting up to 6 total Heart symbols and awarding 1 additional Free Game! Perhaps some of you have already played this slot, but we only recently had the opportunity at Casino Arizona in Scottsdale. One of our team members had a feeling to play the game because of the bright and happy graphics on screen so we decided to sit down and give it a try. The base game is quite simple and has some exciting payouts like when the Queen Honey Bee randomly transfers on to all low valued card symbols for some big wins! So, if you are ready for a less volatile experience than what many other slots offer now, this may be the game for you. And this slot is all about triggering the Honey Reel bonus. Once you hit the Honey Reel, a giant reel (similar to popular game shows) starts spinning onscreen which can award jackpots, the Top Up feature, free games, or other bonuses. What we found exceptionally entertaining was the Top Up Feature. And, you can actually trigger the Top Up Feature in the base game with six or more credit symbols. The Top Up Feature begins with 6 or more credit values on screen and the player is awarded 3 spins, during which the goal is to collect at least 1 more symbol on the remaining open positions so the spin meter resets to 3 spins remaining. If a blue symbol lands, the original values from the start of the feature are added onto the blue symbol. If a green symbol lands, the original values, any blue values, and any existing green values are added together as the credit amount for the symbol. The more green symbols, the better! Fill up all the open positions and you win the Grand Jackpot. If a green or blue symbol lands and changes to a gold heart symbol, players collect to unlock up to 2 more screens to play in the Top Up Feature. We walked away with twice our bankroll after a long session where our initial stake was enough to cover 150 spins. Let us know what you think about this game! $

DEFENSIVE TEXAS HOLD ‘EM POKER Analyzing The Change In Strategies Of Play

T

exas Hold ’Em continues to be the number one poker game in Arizona with no end of popularity in sight. But what’s surprising is a shift in playing styles I’ve noticed over the past year. Still, I’m a defensive driver, not a defensive poker player! While the popular consensus among poker pros and writers has been that aggressive play is best, I’m noticing some defensive play that’s perplexing but intriguing. Maybe not a groundswell of change, but it’s there. So, give it some thought during your next session. PLAYING POCKET ACES & KINGS Because pocket Aces and Kings are such powerful hands, writers stress the need to raise and reduce the field. With Aces, you’ll win 85% of the time against a single opponent, but your odds drop with each additional caller (down to just 31% against nine players). But even Doyle Brunson admitted that he occasionally called with Aces to mix up his play. Today, more players seem to be giving that idea some traction. Why? Perhaps because it’s so easy to trap yourself and lose your stack in no-limit when your Aces go sideways. That happens when players hit sets, catch a straight or flush draw, or even flop two pairs. So again, paraphrasing Doyle, the problem with big pairs is you’re likely to win a small pot or lose a big one. That usually happens when you over-bet the flop against made hands or a player’s hand odds are too good on a draw to fold. So, what’s the answer? Some players play defensively, protect their stacks, and slow playing until the coast is clear. PLAYING DEFENSE FIRST I’ve also seen more players willing to call 10X big blind preflop raises with suited (and even unsuited) connectors, harking back to Brunson’s style from the 1970s. And strangely enough, those same players are smooth calling with pocket pairs as high as Tens. I can’t do that, but I’m aware on the flop and turn that more players can. When the board is connected (straight and flush draws), you’ve got to be careful with top pairs, and it is easier to release those

16 Arizona Gaming Guide | January 2024 | azgamingguide.com

cards if you haven’t shoved a stack before or post-flop. Is there merit to playing this defensively? I’m not convinced, but at least you know the game’s fabric is evolving, even for Ace-King. THE BIG SLICK TRAP I’ve now seen good players backing off their previous overaggressive play of Ace-King by raising when first to act but often just calling when close to the button. My first reaction is to smack them, but what do I know? I’m constantly surprised by what people turn over at showdown! Still, there’s an inherent distrust of any bet or raise from the button, especially on the flop, and that’s just where you can get good action from earlier players who played Ace-Queen, Jack, and Ten when you flop a King or Ace having just called preflop. Disguised hands get paid off. If the board comes two or three to a straight or flush, you can call or check without a continuation bet. It’s a defensive strategy, but if you regularly trap yourself with Big Slick as many people do, this type of play can save you chips on nothing boards and win extra chips when you hit. $ Writer Al Moe has worked in the casino industry for many years. He has lived and worked in Las Vegas, Reno, and Lake Tahoe. He also attended the University of Nevada, Reno. He is an avid writer and blogger. TABLE GAMES By TJ Jorgensen

FROM MY MAILBAG—PART I Strategy, Tournaments, Advice

O

ur first question comes from Jimmy C who writes: I love your articles! I haven’t played as much Blackjack in a while as I miss the $3 and $5 tables. Here in Tucson they are all $10 and $15. I did learn to count cards years ago and when I am patient, I usually do win. But as you know, it is a lot of work, like a parttime job. My real question to you is on playing perfect strategy. I do understand that you hit on 15 and 16, the two worst hands to be dealt, right? But, what if you have a three or four card 15 or 16? What do you suggest? Stick with the plan and hit? Or stay? Jimmy, that’s a really good question. When you get totals with more than two cards you treat the total the same in basic strategy. For example if you get a ten and three twos versus a ten you would still treat it as a sixteen and basic strategy would tell you to hit again. It is a crummy hand for sure! By hitting the sixteen you will win 25.23% of the time, bust out 69.31% of the time and push 5.46% of the time for a net loss of 44.08% of the time. Which brings me to a point worth mentioning. If you find a casino that offers surrender you can surrender the hand and only lose half your bet which will save you money when the situation arises of a sixteen versus a ten. Our next question comes from Julie, and she writes: Are there any sort of Blackjack groups in the Phoenix area? I really want to try my hand at a Blackjack tournament someday, but I can’t even find anywhere to practice. I wish I had the money to go to Vegas, but I’m not at that point yet. I’m very sad that [local casinos] quit having their weekly blackjack tournaments. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Might be worth a try. I, as well as many others, would love to see a return of the tournaments! My last question for this month comes from Jennie, who writes: I enjoy reading your magazine, and your writers are great! TJ is really fun to read because he keeps it real. I like playing Blackjack. But lately I feel like I’m really annoyed and can’t have fun because the people playing at the tables always act so stupid. It’s like they are a bunch of frat guys or golf players or something just drinking and being loud and they just YELL! Even if it’s not at my table and a few tables away I can’t stand it anymore. So I wanted to ask TJ if he has any problems with people like that and how he handles it. Does it ruin your concentration and focus like it does mine? Do you say anything to them? Well, Jennie, unfortunately you have to learn to ignore those types of people who usually don’t play well enough to last very long at the tables. What I do is usually wait until very late at night or early morning where there aren’t very many players.

Thanks for writing in Julie! Before COVID the Blackjack tournament community was about 300 players strong in the Phoenix area. But with all the casinos discontinuing their tournaments after COVID we were all forced to go and play in Vegas where the tournament community is thriving.

Although I am just amused by the creative ways those types of players have come up with to lose their money which usually doesn’t take very long. Just remember you can only play stupid for so long before it catches up with you. So they will be gone before you know it. Let it be a lesson on how not to play!

The tournaments I play are always sold out with a lot of players from Phoenix. The only downside is the entry fee of $500 which eliminates a lot of the beginners! Apparently the Phoenix casinos felt they didn’t need a hundred or so Blackjack players and their significant others boosting their casino revenues during off hours. Maybe if enough players requested them in the suggestion box they would start having them again!

Stay tuned for From My Mailbag—Part II in next month’s issue! $

COVER STORY

Let The Casino Help You Reclaim Time For What Matters Beneficial Habits For a

24

Healthy 2024 & Beyond

A

nother year has come and gone, which means it’s time to create intentions for the upcoming year ahead. By eliminating stressors, practicing self-care, and improving your mental and physical health, you can make 2024 your healthiest year yet. Here are 24 New Year’s resolutions that not only set up beneficial habits but are also easy and fun to follow.

1. More Leisure Time All work and no play is not good for your health. It may come as no surprise that Americans spend more hours working as compared to other prosperous countries. Numerous studies have shown that Americans spend even more of that work time in the evenings and weekends.

20 Arizona Gaming Guide | January 2024 | azgamingguide.com

Casinos are a great entertainment option and a fantastic way to alleviate stress. Besides wonderful gaming selections from slots and table games to bingo and live sports betting, casinos also offer amazing dining options, diverse live entertainment, golf and more. Grab your friends and family and set aside some time for fun. There’s more to life than just work.

2. More Couple Time When is the last time you and your significant other spent some alone time together? Some real quality time? Oftentimes, we take our partners for granted because life just gets to be too hectic. Why not book a night at a casino resort, have dinner and catch a show with your loved one? 3. More Time With Friends Making time for friends is very important. And I don’t mean following them on social media and commenting on their posts. Fostering friendships is important to prevent isolation and loneliness. Friends can also boost happiness and reduce stress. So, grab a friend or two and invite them to the All-U-Can-Eat buffet to catch up and then see a show or try your luck at the games. 4. Listen To Music Research has shown that listening to music can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain as well as improve your mood, sleep, mental alertness and memory. Casinos offer a variety of music options from concerts to live bands in the lounges and even karaoke! The different music genres are endless and they’re available every day of the week, not just on the weekends! 5. Retrain Your Brain & Try Something New Practicing a new and challenging activity every now and then is a good bet for building and maintaining cognitive abilities. We all have our favorite casino games, but trying something different and acquiring new skills keeps your brain healthy. The mental work it takes has been shown to slow the signs of aging and even prevent or delay the effects of some devastating diseases such as Alzheimer’s. So, if you’re normally a slot player, try a table game or grab a dauber and head to the bingo hall. 6. Time For Self Care Are you the kind of person that always puts others first? If you don’t start taking time for yourself then chances are you’re not being your best self for others either. Take a “ME” day every now and then. Most casino resorts have spas. Why not use your comp points on a glorious massage or facial? Treat yourself. You’re worth it! 7. Develop A New Hobby Hobbies are a great way to reduce stress and provide a sense of happiness and accomplishment in your life. A fun hobby is not only interesting and challenging, but it’s something we can’t wait to do in our leisure time to give us a purpose outside of work. Ever tried golf? Let the casino hook you up with a round of golf and see if you enjoy it. Or sign up for the casino’s next poker tournament. Your new hobby awaits. 8. More Laughter Laughter is the best medicine, it’s true. There has been so much research that has shown how laughter can decrease stress hor-

mones and trigger healthy physical and emotional changes in the body. New studies even suggest that laughing can reduce artery inflammation and increase HDL, the “good” cholesterol. One option is to catch a comedy act at a casino whenever you can. Another option is to play a cute slot machine that will make you laugh like Planet Moolah or Rich Little Piggies. 9. Go Offline Do you check your email and social media often? Of course it’s fun to see your friends’ and family’s latest updates just a click away. But do you really need to waste time looking at your cousin’s latest meal? Unplugging and taking some time to reconnect with yourself and be present can be incredibly valuable. Start by turning your phone off when you’re at the casino. Whether you’re playing slots or bingo, having a meal with family or friends, or watching a sporting event in the lounge, be engaged in what you are doing 100%. In fact, you might find that when you commit to being in the moment, you won’t even miss checking your technology for emails, posts and messages. 10. Eat Healthy Restaurants in casinos offer plenty of delicious, healthful options (salads, fish, gluten-free, etc.) so you don’t have to feel guilty about eating out. Did you know that fish is a great source of high-quality protein and healthy fat? This is particularly true of fatty fish such as salmon which is also loaded with antiinflammatory omega 3 fatty acids and various other nutrients. Studies show that people who eat fish regularly have a lower risk for several conditions including heart disease, dementia, and inflammatory bowel disease. 11. Travel More Everyone has their favorite local casino close to home, but there are so many more exciting out-of-town options. Explore a new area during the day and have a little fun at the casino after dinner. According to one study, after just a two day vacation, trav(Continued on page 22)

elers felt less anxious, more rested and in a better mood. 12. Make Time For Sports Research suggests that watching your favorite team play creates dopamine in the brain which brightens your mood and reduces depression. So, grab a beer and some nachos and take in a game on a large screen at a casino Sportsbook. You can even place a low wager on a game (casinos offer bets as low as $2) for fun! 13. Clear Your Mind, Meditate Playing slots, or any games for that matter, can put you in a slight meditative trance to relax you, lower your blood pressure and clear your head of all the other noise. Meditation isn’t about just sitting on the floor, closing your eyes and repeating “OM.” It means simply stopping to smell the roses. And studies have shown that playing slot machines clears your mind, slashes stress, relieves pain, and even improves mood. Scientists are beginning to understand how. One study found that 8 weeks of regular meditation can change parts of your brain related to emotions, learning and memory. So, even playing slots can be good for the brain as long as you do it mindfully. 14. Spend Less Time On Household Tasks When signed up for a player’s card, you earn credits towards free food that could be purchased at the restaurants. Next time you’re at the casino, grab some rotisserie chicken at the deli and you have a couple of ready-made meals; chicken and salad one night for dinner and chicken sandwiches for lunch the next day. 15. Exercise Most casino resorts have gyms and pools. Be honest, how many times have you stayed at a casino and walked a couple miles on the treadmill or swam a few laps around the pool? And why not? It’s free and you feel great afterwards and a little less guilty about eating that scrumptious slice of chocolate cake at dinner. Lift some weights in the gym because strength training leads to improvements in metabolic health and insulin sensitivity. 16. Take More Risks The ability to take calculated risks is actually an essential human trait, crucial to our development as a species and as individuals. It’s been proven that gamblers are far more likely than non-gamblers to take a chance on possible higher payoffs and new opportunities. Therefore, being willing to take risks is positively linked to learning, coping strategies and development. 17. More Family Time Almost all casino resorts have pools and what kids don’t love to play in water? Some casino resorts even have arcades, familyfriendly concerts & events. There’s something for everyone. 18. Drink in Moderation Studies have shown that 1-2 drinks a day keeps the doctor

22 Arizona Gaming Guide | January 2024 | azgamingguide.com

away. Moderate drinking is good for the heart and circulatory system and protects against type 2 diabetes and gallstones. Most casinos provide free drink vouchers while playing. 19. Meet New People The casino provides an excellent opportunity to meet new people, whether it’s employees or customers. Slot or Blackjack tournaments, bingo and casino events provide a great chance to socialize. Social connection with others can help improve your ability to recover from stress, anxiety and depression. Numerous studies also indicate that socialization encourages better sleep, well-being and quality of life. 20. Don’t Fear Coffee Despite some controversy over it, coffee is loaded with health benefits. It’s rich in antioxidants and some studies have even linked coffee intake to longevity and reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, and numerous other diseases. Some of the best coffee is now served in casinos. They’ve learned! Now there’s either a Starbucks inside the casino or other similar excellent brands of coffee offered. 21. Quit Smoking Nicotine and other chemicals found in cigarettes are extremely harmful to your health. Toss out all tobacco products and head to a cigarette-free environment. Luckily, almost all casinos in Arizona have gone 100% smoke-free. So, if you’re having a hard time kicking the habit, grab some sugar-free gum and distract yourself at the casino. 22. Practice Self-Control Another way to control stress and protect your mental health is by learning how to say, “No.” Most people have to stop taking on other people’s problems and overextending themselves. The casino is a perfect place to foster a sense of will power. You have to know when to quit, never gamble beyond your means, resist the urge to go to the ATM to withdraw more money if you’ve depleted your bankroll and “don’t put it all back” when lady luck comes knocking. 23. Smile More Do you know that smiling produces endorphins in the body which provide instant happiness? Scientists have also found that even if you’re not in the mood to smile, just by simply raising the corners of your mouth is enough to produce the right chemicals in the brain to impact your mood. Hit 21 at the Blackjack table, a bonus on a slot or yell out Bingo and let’s see how quickly that frown turns upside down. 24. Stop Feeling Guilty It’s okay to take time for yourself! And, there’s nothing wrong with putting yourself first. As long as you take care of yourself you will be happier, healthier and more productive. $

Conley has logged more than 140 volunteer hours this year and is the SAGUAROS team leader for the Susan G. Komen 3Day Walk. She is also a SAVVY committee member, a Business Impact Group that focuses on women's empowerment, support and advancement within the company. “Lauren demonstrates leadership and inspires others with her efforts,” says Director of Marketing and Hotel Operations Samantha Gulick. “I joined Lauren’s SAGUAROS Susan G. Komen 3-day walking team these last two years, which allowed me to witness Lauren's dedication to breast cancer awareness. Even when Lauren was finished raising her required funds, she still helped ensure the rest of the team met their goals by organizing Bingo, bake sales and cookie grams.” HERO, a team member-based volunteer program, enables Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino employees and their families to make noteworthy and visible contributions to the community by donating their time, skills, expertise, and compassion to dozens of volunteer projects. Each quarter, employees are encouraged to nominate and recognize peers who have a servant's heart for the HERO of the Quarter recognition. Harrah's Ak-Chin Casino (HarrahsAkChin.com) features 529 luxurious resort and tower guestrooms, spa and fitness center, and an outdoor swimming pool with a swim-up bar. $

Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino, long-known for its corporate giving and community support celebrated Giving Tuesday in a big way this year. The HERO, CodeGreen, SALUTE and SAVVY committees at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino embraced Giving Tuesday by offering a number of opportunities for employees to support, say thank you and give back to the Maricopa community and beyond by participating in the following events: CodeGreen: Highway Clean Up—25 volunteers picked up two truck bed loads full of trash. HERO: Feed My Starving Children—26 volunteers packed nutritious meals for hungry children around the world. SALUTE: Card Sorting for Troops—This activity was kicked off on Giving Tuesday and ran through December 11. SAVVY: Giving Tree Drop Off—The property collected more than 6,400 items for the local Maricopa Against Abuse Women’s Shelter. “Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino has a long-standing reputation for giving back to the community,” says HERO Committee Chair Barbara Achten. “Giving Tuesday provided a lot of opportunities for employees to help and support others in need. Pam Tillis Mazatzal Hotel & Casino January 21

Tyler Farr Mazatzal Hotel & Casino March 22

Mazatzal Hotel & Casino is proud to bring country music icon & actress Pam Tillis (Pam Tillis Acoustic Trio) on Sunday, January 21, 2024.

Friday, March 22, 2024, Mazatzal Hotel & Casino is proud to bring one of country music’s best male vocalists, Tyler Farr, to Payson, Arizona.

Pam’s numerous accolades include Country Music Association 1994 Female Vocalist of the Year, 1999 Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration, 12 Top 10 hits (#1 - “Mi Vida Loca,” “Shake the Sugar Tree,” “When You Walk In The Room,” “In Between Dances,” “Don’t Tell Me What To Do,” “Maybe It Was Memphis” and more). As an actress, Pam regularly appeared on the hit TV show Nashville from 2013 – 2018.

Tyler Farr is the first artist signed to Jason Aldean’s Night Train Records/BBR Music Group. The Country-rocker, with three No.1 songs to his credit (“Redneck Crazy,” “Whiskey in My Water,” and “A Guy Walks Into a Bar”) broke onto the scene with the 2013 release of his debut album, Redneck Crazy, which landed at No. 2 on the Billboard Country Albums Chart and No. 5 on the Billboard Top 200.

Though Pam has rolled easily with the tides and has drawn something from every new twist the ever-changing country music world has shown her, Pam Tillis has always insisted on writing and cutting songs that speak from the soul. The results have been records that emanate an almost painful beauty. With more than 30 singles charting on US Billboard charts, 10 studio albums including her favorite, the critically acclaimed 2002 “It’s All Relative” (a tribute to her father, the great Mel Tillis), and 3 other releases “Rhinestoned,” “Recollection” and “Just In Time For Christmas” off her own label, Stellar Cat Records. In 2012 Red River Entertainment released ‘Dos Divas’ a Country Duo album with fellow superstar Lorrie Morgan under the name Grits and Glamour. Concert tickets and additional information available online at MazatzalCasino.com or at the cashier. $

Farr’s Platinum-selling title-track “Redneck Crazy” projected Farr forward to celebrate back-to-back No. 1 singles, including his first No. 1 as a songwriter, with his Platinumcertified hit “Whiskey in my Water.” His sophomore album, Suffer In Peace, followed suit, also making its debut in the Top 5 on both the Billboard Top 200 Albums and Billboard Country Albums Charts, leading Farr to become the only solo male Country artist in the past decade to have their first two studio albums debut in the Top 5 on the Billboard 200 Chart. Known for his love for our military and his passion for the outdoors and recognized as a 2014 CRS New Faces of Country Radio and 2014 Music Row “Breakthrough Artist of the Year” nominee, the opera-trained singer quickly earned coveted slots touring with Jason Aldean, Florida Georgia Line, Luke Combs, Brantley Gilbert and Lee Brice. Concert tickets and additional information available online at MazatzalCasino.com or at the cashier. $

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker

YOU WON’T BELIEVE WHAT GETS STOLEN! Industry Study Reveals Long List Of Nicked Items At Casinos

C

asinos have a lot on their hands to worry about. Obviously the money. In all its forms, cash, tickets, chips, and digital. Then they worry about their employees, and their guests. Ok, Ok, Ok, clearly some casinos don’t care about their guests. But, casinos also have to be worried about...artwork! Seriously? Artwork? Oh yeah, and minifridges as well! Nope! Not kidding! Artwork is the eighth most likely item to be stolen from a hotel, and minifridges come in last (twenty-first place). But mattresses, yes, mattresses, are twice as likely to be stolen than minifridges and rank above lamps and phones in eighteenth place. It doesn't take a scientist to list the number one item stolen from hotel rooms, and I’m sure you can easily come to the conclusion that towels take first place, much to the dismay of the hotel staff. I can understand how towels, bathrobes, hangers, pens, toiletries and cosmetics, batteries, and the cutlery are the top seven categories of items stolen (in order). But how does artwork get carted off? Those pieces of property are followed in order by tablets/ technology, blankets, pillows, dishes, coffee makers, remote controls, hair dryers, TVs, and light bulbs before we hit the mattress category. How does a queen or king mattress make it out? On the luggage cart? Or again, is security just asleep? Perhaps it’s entitled VIPs and the casino doesn't want to bring it up. Remember the line from Casino (1995—Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Sharon Stone)? "Downstairs he takes us for $2 million and upstairs he takes free soap, shampoo, and towels." But it gets more interesting! In four star hotels, batteries get stolen almost three times more than in five star hotels. Yet coffee makers get stolen almost five times more in a five star hotel than in a four star hotel. What is going on here? Light bulbs are twice as likely to be stolen in a four star than a five star. But mattresses are over five times more likely when you compare the five star with the four star.

34 Arizona Gaming Guide | January 2024 | azgamingguide.com

And I have to come back to the artwork, which is over four times more probable to be pinched in the five star than the four star. Plus tablets/technology are six times more likely to disappear in the five star hotels over the four star counterparts. Did you know a grand piano disappeared from a lobby? Forget heists like the ones depicted in the Ocean’s 11, 12, 13 franchise of films. Three men in overalls just carted off the piano and it was never seen again. This really happened! What would you think if you couldn't find your room because the room numbers had been stolen off the doors and walls? Or, if you wanted to relax in the sauna and the benches were gone? Perhaps you walk into the bathroom and there’s no shower head, faucets, toilet seat, drainpipe, or even a sink! What is a hotel supposed to do with no muzak? Imagine the entire sound system being removed and stolen in one night. All true stories! I wonder if a slot or a table game has ever walked out the casino doors unnoticed? Do you know of anything (aside from money—we all know those stories) that has been stolen from a casino hotel? If so, let me know! I always like hearing about interesting stories from our readers. $

A man walks into a bar and notices a huge glass jar filled with $20 bills. He asks the bartender, “What’s with the jar?” The bartender tells him, “Bet $20 and complete three challenges and you’ll win the jar. If you don’t, the $20 goes in the jar.” “So, what are the challenges?” asks the man. The bartender says, “First, drink ten shots of tequila. Second, here’s a set of pliers, the dog out back has a toothache, yank the tooth out. Third, the renter upstairs is an old woman who keeps flirting with my patrons, you’ll have to satisfy her.” The man thinks to himself, “I can handle my liquor, the dog will be easy, and I’m the king of romance and one-night stands, this is a piece of cake!” “Ok, I’ll do it!” says the man. The bartender pours out ten shots, watches him drink them, and holds out the pliers. The man goes out back and the rest of the guests immediately hear loud barking, growling, the sound of clothing being ripped apart, banging against the backdoor and the fence, and a lot of shouting coming from the man. Everyone is pressing their ears against the back door as the commotion continues until finally, twenty minutes later, the dog lets out a long howl and then complete silence sets in. Five minutes later, the man, extremely bloodied with scratches and bite marks, his clothes dirty and hanging off of him in shreds, throws open the back door, stumbles inside with the pliers still in hand and asks, “Now where’s the old lady with that toothache?”
