BLACK CATS...

Your Authority On Everything Gaming

A Blessing Or A Curse?

VOLUME 12 • ISSUE 10 MANAGING DIRECTOR & VIDEO POKER GURU Elizabeth Torma liz@azgamingguide.com

O

ne idea most gamblers around the world agree on is that black cats are bad luck. If a black cat crosses someone’s path on their way to a casino, many will stop the car, turn around, and drive right back home. Unfortunately, for many other black animals, the bad luck label is given to them as well because of the legendary reputation the black cat has. For the most part, Western Folklore informs us that the black cat is associated with witches and demons. Furthermore, folklore tells us that a black cat can change into human form and act as a spy or an assistant to beings practicing evil magic! I must note that this opinion is not always true for many cultures around the world. In England, a black cat is a symbol of good luck! In Scotland, if an unfamiliar black cat arrives at your doorstep, it is believed to bring prosperity to your home. During the Middle Ages, sailors viewed black cats as symbols of luck for their ships. Also, their wives believed the supernatural powers of black cats would protect their spouses during long voyages at sea. During the 19th Century, pirates had very specific beliefs about black cats! If one walked towards them, bad luck for them. If one walked away from them, good luck for them. If one walked on and then off their ship, the ship was condemned to sink during the next voyage! I’ll let you decide what kind of luck a black cat brings you. While I don’t have English blood, I’m going to pretend I do! Have a lucky month!

“Chilling” Table Game Myths

In keeping with last month’s theme of top slot machine myths, here’s a list of the more common themes amongst all the readers’ letters regarding table games as answered by our monthly Table Games Columnist Al Moe. Some Chilling Table Game Myths There are many myths about gaming, like the one about casinos in Las Vegas pumping pure oxygen into the air to keep gamblers happy and awake for hours. That was mentioned in a book by Mario Puzo, but it didn’t make it real. In Arizona, a recurring myth is that the odds at penny slots are better than those on dollar machines. That would be nice if it were true, but generally speaking, the higher the denomination, the better the odds for the player. There are no slots lower than a penny. You get my drift, right? Some players think they will do better in the high limit room than out on the casino floor. How exactly would that be? Unless the high limit tables have fewer decks on the game you are playing, the odds are the same. If you don’t know it, the more decks used on a blackjack game, the higher the house edge. Spooks in the Night Halloween is coming, but table games aren’t different on the graveyard shift. Some players have heard the myth that the casinos hire shills to make you lose and to get games closed when midnight comes. Of course, that’s not the case. As the crowd thins, casinos consolidate games so they can send their workers home, it’s as simple as that. And, the myth that your wins and losses will be impacted by how another gambler plays their hand is just fantasy. Sure, a player can mess up one hand, but by the end of the day, it all evens out. Another popular myth involves drinking at the casino. One story is that the casinos water down the drinks to make more money. Some bartenders still do a free pour and some use an actual shot glass, or the dispensers are set for a shot. Either way, liquor is inexpensive, and the liquor laws are pretty strict in Arizona. So, don’t worry, the casino isn’t trying to save 25-cents on your drink. On the flip of the chip, I’ve also heard that the casinos doublepour their drinks to get players drunk, so they’ll gamble more. That’s another myth that’s got to be shut down. Again, the laws are strict, but today’s a good day to start drinking conservatively when you are gambling anyway, so consider slowing down! Other Myths Floating About Have you heard that the dealer will cheat for you if you tip enough? Well, stranger things have happened, but remember

06

Arizona Gaming Guide | October 2020 | azgamingguide.com

there are cameras on the games, there are Pit Bosses watching the games, and a dealer is apt to get fired if they cheat for you. Better steer clear of that myth! Still, the most frightening myth is the one that says using your players club card is unlucky. That one sounds like a selffulfilling prophecy. If you use your card, you get cool benefits like free meals, free concert and event seating, free and discounted rooms, and some nice conversation from the supervisors who get to know your name. If you don’t use your players club card, you lose all those things. The complimentary offers you’ll lose might only account for a small percentage of how much you gamble, but that’s what sounds unlucky to me. Table game myths can be scary, but only if you believe them! $

P

layers at Desert Diamond Casino in Tucson are living the “bling” and feeling the “ka-ching” for the first time in a new, fun family of games from Aristocrat.

Ka-Ching Cash is the game family, and the game titles – Vegas Neon and Xingfu Coins – each have an exciting and innovative Hold & Spin mechanic and intuitive jackpot chase. Triggered by 3, 4 or 5 Cash-on-Reels symbols, the Ka-Ching Cash bonus is played on each initiating reel, with the remaining reels being grayed out for the feature. A Hold & Spin bonus is then applied to each individual reel – resetting to 3 spins when additional Cash-on-Reels symbols have landed. In both Vegas Neon and Xingfu Coins, players will be thrilled to find jackpots available at all bet levels, and they will enjoy the unique game play of both games. For example, each individual reel corresponds to a bonus award or jackpot – with reel 1 relating to the Mini jackpot and reel 5 relating to the Grand jackpot. Once a reel is filled with four symbols, the corresponding award is won! Adding to the fun of Hold & Spin, Ka-Ching Cash offers Free Games with retriggers as well as a bonus pick gateway, allowing players to select a mystery symbol that awards either Hold & Spin or Free Games. LUCKY GAMBLING It’s Not The Cards, Not The Game, Not The Staff, It Just Might Be...

T

he other night I was sitting with a player at a blackjack table, and her luck was terrible. To be helpful and get her bad vibe as far away from me as possible, I asked if she ever changed seats during such a torrential downpour of bad cards. Her reply was, “No, never. It’s bad luck to move.” Alright, I thought, but couldn’t help saying, “I think it’s unlucky to be superstitious.” She wasn’t much amused, and I was winning, but I moved anyway. At the next table, I continued to win. Lucky me! I know my superstition comment is a contradiction in terms. Believing in luck and superstition is a paradox, especially if you live by the law of large numbers. Basically, that law says that over enough hands of blackjack, you’ll win or lose based mostly on your ability, not by the dealer, the other players, or your bankroll. However, other factors do come into play, and they include your generosity, your drinking habits, your sleep patterns, and your frame of mind. Set Yourself Up For Success I didn’t need to change seats to get lucky and win, but the other player did. She would have done better if she had moved. Don’t believe it? Prove me wrong. Oh, but wait, you can’t. We can’t know if she would have done better at another table or in another seat, but just the act of “changing” might have helped. Psychologically, she was in bad shape. To start with, she was accepting her losses, her “fate” as she saw it. That’s never good. She was also playing poorly, and while that might have been her usual ability I witnessed, it probably wasn’t. When we consciously decide to improve ourselves, our outlook, and our destiny, our bodies and minds get a little kick of adrenaline and some much-needed hope. When we accept defeat, we often fall into bad habits. What I was witnessing was a lack of concentration and decision making that was flawed. We’ve all been there on occasion, but when we gamble – for real money – it’s always best to have a positive outlook. Scientists have shown that (psychologically) when we think positively, we make better decisions, even if that is following what we know are the best rules for the outcome that we desire.

14

Arizona Gaming Guide | October 2020 | azgamingguide.com

Failing to double down on 6-4 against a dealer’s small up-card because we have been losing is a poor decision. So is refusing to split a pair of 8’s against a dealer 10. Splitting a pair of 8’s against a 10 (you should always split Aces and 8’s – honest) is a positive step forward. Yes, you are risking more money, but it isn’t a defensive move. It’s a matter of perspective and psychology. Getting a pair of 8’s against a 10 is lousy. That’s all there is to it, and there’s no way to change the fact that you are destined in the long-run to lose money with the hand. However, by splitting, you improve your overall chances of winning that particular hand. In the long run, you’ll be rewarded with an extra 5% return on your wagers for the split. You’ll get an even larger return if you move seats, provided it improves your outlook and attention to details, like playing every hand correctly. Have you ever changed your luck around and did something at the casino to turn a losing streak into a winning streak? We’d love to hear your winning story and how you set yourself up for success. Send us an email to editor@azgaminggguide.com with the words Lucky Gambling in the subject line. $

MY BEST BLACKJACK “TRICK” Use Your School Skills To Improve Your Game

I’

m often asked what the best "trick" for beating blackjack is. The answer may surprise you, but my response when someone asks that question is "flashcards!" That's right, flashcards! Remember when you were growing up and trying to learn your multiplication tables? You had a set of four inch by four inch cards, on one side you would see "8 x 8" the other side would provide the answer "64." Make a set for yourself with all the basic strategy hands. For example, on one side you will have "Ace & 7" on the answer side you will have “STAND—when the dealer has a 2, 7, or 8, DOUBLE—when the dealer shows 3-6, and HIT—when the dealer shows 9, 10, or Ace.” By the way, this is the most misplayed hand in basic strategy. Quiz yourself until you can get them all correct. Once you have them mastered don't throw them in the kitchen drawer rather, run through them every time before you go to the casino. Many players at one time knew basic strategy perfectly, but quit practicing. Some of the hands come up so infrequently that they forget how to play them. For example, the hand of "9,9" against the dealer showing a "2" comes up 43 times for every 100,000 hands. By reviewing, you will always be on top of your game. The player who plays perfect basic strategy has a 25% chance of being ahead after 25,000 hands. I, personally, review my strategy every time before I go out to play at the casino. I call it my pregame warmups! It doesn't hurt to go through a deck of cards playing some practice hands before heading to the casino either. Usually, after a session of blackjack, you can point to one hand that was the turning point as to whether you ended up a winner or loser. It is hard enough to beat the casino when you play a perfect game, so make sure you don't give the casino any additional advantage by misplaying a hand. Practice with your flashcards until you know basic strategy perfectly. Once you know it as well as your own name, then you will give yourself the best chance of walking out of the casino a winner. I can count on one hand the number of players I have seen lately that play perfect basic strategy. I do have to give kudos to the two wonderful ladies I played with at Casino Arizona after they reopened. I played with them for about an hour and they both played a flawless game, and won too! $

BETTING MAGIC—PART I How To Use The Built-In Functionality Of Electronic Table Games

O

ne important item to be aware of, when playing electronic Craps or electronic Roulette, is the amount of time you have to place your bet. Regardless of your strategy, you may find the time you need to complete your bet, especially on the Roulette machine, is way too short. I have heard many a player shout out in anger because they didn’t have enough time! The fast pace of the e-machines is one of the reasons why I prefer these to live tables. It never fails, when I am playing live table Craps, that the larger the crowd, combined with the complexity of the bets, results in a slow down. Now, I know I am being superstitious, but I believe that it “cools” down the play, ultimately resulting in a Seven-out; the last thing a “right” bettor, wants to hear. So, is there anything that can be done, to help with placing complex bets, especially on the e-machine? Yes, there is. I call them Magic Buttons.

7/8/9 or 10/11/12 or both. In addition, I will watch the numbers that are next to, or on the same street as the 13, 18, 22 or 30 and make the appropriate split or street bet.

Common Buttons Both e-Craps and e-Roulette provide additional buttons that help to speed up the betting process. I will start with the two common buttons used by each machine and then, in future articles, discuss the discrete buttons of each machine.

Craps In Craps, the Repeat button comes in handy on Come-out rolls, especially if I win. I normally Lay the 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10; and then bet the C&E. If a 7 is rolled, then the Lay bets win and the C&E loses. When this happens, all of the bets are taken off the betting surface. I can use the Repeat button to remake the last bet, just like Roulette.

Repeat Bet This button appears on both machines and, as the name implies, repeats the last bet made, along with the amounts wagered. This saves a lot of time, especially if the bet is very complex. I will discuss examples for both machines. Roulette Let’s assume you like to bet your family birthdays. In my case I make six bets; one for me, one for my wife, one for each of our sons and one for our two grandchildren. This is a total of six separate bets on the 7, 12, 13, 18, 22, and 30. It’s not too difficult if I simply bet these numbers separately; however I like to make some slight modifications. Both my sons were born in November or 11. It just so happens, the 11 is next to the 12. So I split those, i.e., 11/12. My wife was born in August or 8, which is next to the 7, again I split the 7/8. In addition, I watch the statistics for “Hot” and “Cold” numbers. If the 9 or 10 are either “Hot” or “Cold” then I turn my split bet into a street bet which covers the

18

Arizona Gaming Guide | October 2020 | azgamingguide.com

Double Bet I will double my bet if the amount I win is at least 4 times my total bet amount. If my bet is $3 then I must win $12. After I repeat the winning bet, I then press the Double Bet button. My entire bet is now double. Summary Using the Repeat and Double buttons allows me to sip my coffee as I watch my fellow players scrambling to manually repeat their bets. $

SAMI’S SMACKDOWN By Sami Becker

FANTASY SPORTS Make Sure Your League Is Legal

W

ith the football season in high gear, the Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) wants to offer some tips to help you have fun and still follow Arizona law. While sports betting remains illegal in the state of Arizona, participating in a fantasy sports league or a football grid pool can be legal, as long as you follow social gambling laws. “While many Arizonans have been eagerly waiting for the football season to start, please make sure that you follow Arizona law if you are participating in a fantasy sports league or grid pool this year,” said Ted Vogt, ADG director. “By following the simple social gambling rules in the state, you can still enjoy these types of friendly wagers legally.” ADG urges fantasy league hosts and grid pool administrators to keep these guidelines on standby to ensure legal wagers: • Arizona Law [A.R.S. 13-3301(7)] specifies social gambling is not to be conducted as a business, which means the host(s) cannot receive financial benefit outside participating in the game. • Social gambling statutes require all pool money to be paid to the winner(s), and that only participants can win.

34 Arizona Gaming Guide | October 2020 | azgamingguide.com

If you are unsure of the legality of your fantasy league, there are a few things to look out for that indicate illegal gambling: • The league or pool requires a fee to participate (“suggested” or “voluntary” donations, rental fees, etc.), • The host keeps a percentage of the pool for administering the game, and • Requires a minimum purchase to participate (food or beverage, etc.). Additionally, all daily fantasy sports betting is prohibited in Arizona. Learn more by viewing ADG’s Gambling Tips to Remember at Gaming.AZ.Gov/Social-Gambling-Tips. ADG takes complaints about illegal gambling seriously. If you have a tip concerning suspected illegal gambling, please contact them at 1.602.771.4263. $

There are people who put their dreams in a little box and say, “Yes, I’ve got dreams, of course, I’ve got dreams.” Then they put the box away and bring it out once in a while to look at it and yep, they’re still there. These are great dreams, but they never even get out of the box. It takes an uncommon amount of guts to put your dreams on the line, to hold them up and say, “How good or how bad am I?” That’s where courage comes in. —Erma Bombeck (American Author and Humorist, b. 1927 d. 1996) My passions were all gathered together like fingers that made a fist.
