The event begins at 8:45 am However, your Co-Hosts, Peggy Baker and Sandy Nygaard along with other conference staff will be in the Zoom event meeting room starting at 8:15 am for anyone who may want to become more familiar with the Zoom settings and interactive features.

During the event, you may contact the Co-Hosts directly via Chat. Additionally, several AEMS Volunteers will be available to help and may also be contacted through Chat. How EMS Providers Can Impact the Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Rate in the US Cheryl Roth, PhD, WHNP-BC, RNC-OB, RNFA

Maternal mortality and morbidity in the US is the highest of any developed country in the world.

The entry into the healthcare system for many women starts with EMS providers. A new, innovative program is being introduced into Arizona that will train pre-hospital and in-hospital providers to meet the specific needs of the pregnant or postpartum patient they encounter.

Dr. Cheryl Roth has been a nurse for 45 years and has worked in all areas of women’s health since 1981. She is currently a nurse practitioner in HonorHealth, working with Sonoran Crossing and Shea’s obstetrics units. Dr. Roth has been an ACLS Instructor since 1990 and has been part of a 5-year grant from AHRQ to develop the OBLS program. She is also one of the co-investigators for a grant to distribute the program across the state of Arizona. Dr. Roth has served on the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses National Board of Directors and was the 2019 president of the board. She has presented both internationally and nationally on many topics, including fetal monitoring and high-risk pregnancy. Dr. Roth has multiple publications in journals including Nursing for Women’s Health, Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic, & Neonatal Nursing, Journal of Nursing Administration, Nursing Forum and The American Journal of Maternal/Child Nursing.

Regional Approach to Mass Casualty Response, Victim Tracking, and Reunification Andrea Glass, EMCT-P

Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) management is a complex and long-term incident that will require coordinated efforts and interoperability to manage multiple scenes. The Mass Casualty Tracking Reunification Arizona Collaborative (MCTRAC) was formed in the latter part of 2022 and is now comprised of over 90 agencies spanning local, county, state, public, and private partnerships to address the gaps associated with mass casualty response, victim tracking, and victim reunification.

These gaps are not specific to Arizona and have been a challenge for communities across the country for decades. The solutions created by MCTRAC are a scalable proactive response that can be adapted to meet the needs of various communities. MCTRAC is based on reality planning and may be used to identify resource capacity, realistic response times for various agencies, improve response capability through collaboration, improve victim tracking and reunification capabilities, and develop new partnerships to improve community resiliency. The established framework is based on simple, realistic, feasible, interoperable, and cost-effective concepts that underscore the importance of life safety, capitalizes on the use of existing resources, relies on collaboration and not on any one specific system, and provides additional support to response efforts.

Assistant Chief Andrea Glass is a 22-year veteran of Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department, and currently oversees the Training, Preparedness, and Wellness Division which includes emergency management, training and professional development, special events preparedness, health and wellness, public information, and she is the accreditation manager for the department. In previous positions, Chief Glass was the Deputy Chief over Emergency Medical Services and has been certified as a paramedic for over 18 years. Chief Glass has a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies in Organizational Studies from Arizona State University and a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Science in Leadership from Grand Canyon University. She sits on the Board of Directors for the Regional Wireless Cooperative as the Board Chair, the Board of Directors for the Arizona Burn Foundation, Board of Directors for the Coyote Crisis Collaborative, and is Chair of the Mass Casualty Tracking Reunification Arizona Collaborative (MCTRAC).

This presentation is a comprehensive guide for EMTs, paramedics, and nurses, addressing the vital aspects of providing effective care to patients with disabilities. We will navigate through inclusive practices, communication strategies, and specialized techniques necessary for understanding and treating diverse patient needs. From adapting protocols to fostering empathy and awareness, this session aims to equip prehospital providers with the knowledge and tools essential for delivering compassionate, tailored care to individuals with disabilities, and special health care needs, in emergency situations. Join us to enhance your skills and contribute to a more inclusive healthcare environment.

Therese Derivan serves as the Emergency Management Captain/Paramedic at the Mesa Fire and Medical Department.

Her journey into emergency services began after earning a degree in Exercise Science from Arizona State University.

Inspired during a ride-along with a firefighter friend, she discovered her passion for this profession. With an extensive 25year tenure in EMS, Captain Derivan commenced her career as an EMT at a private ambulance company before joining MFMD. She completed her paramedic training in 2006 and attained the rank of captain in 2015. Presently, she dedicates her efforts to emergency preparedness for the City of Mesa and holds the role of threat liaison officer (TLO). Beyond her professional commitments, Therese cherishes moments with her husband and two children, one of whom happens to have Down syndrome. __________________________________________________________________________________________________

This presentation delves into the complex intersection of medical and legal matters that paramedics encounter in their critical role as first responders. Paramedics play a crucial role in emergency medical care, and understanding the legal aspects of their profession is essential. This informative presentation will explore various medical legal issues paramedics face every day.

Fire Chief Greg Ruiz has over 34 years of fire service, 29 of which were served with the Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department with 11 as Fire Chief. While working his way through the ranks of the service, he acquired his bachelor’s degree in public administration from Grand Canyon University and his master’s degree in educational leadership from Northern Arizona University. Greg is a graduate of Tempe Leadership class XXII and the Homeland Security Executive Leaders Program (ELP) at the Naval Postgraduate School Center for Homeland Defense and Security and Executive Fire Officer Program. He is a Certified Public Manager from the Advanced Public Executive Program at Arizona State University. He also has an extensive instructor background, teaching for local community colleges in the areas of emergency medicine and fire science for thirty years. His professional memberships include the International Association of Fire Chiefs and Arizona Fire Chiefs Association. Greg has volunteered time in the past as a Valley Big Brother for Big Brother Big Sisters of Central Arizona

PRESENTATION DESCRIPTIONS Pediatric Airway Management Julie Augenstein, MD Prehospital airway management is an important skillset for the EMS provider, especially with the pediatric patient. Respiratory distress and arrest are commonly seen in the field and can be one of the most stressful prehospital calls to run. Moreover, there are several anatomic features in infants and children that may impact advanced airway management. In this presentation, you will learn the anatomic differences in the pediatric vs adult patient. You will also learn the role of airway adjuncts in management of a pediatric airway. Pediatric airway cases will also be reviewed and discussed.

Dr. Julie Augenstein is a board-certified Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physician and the EMS Base Hospital Medical Director at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. She completed her pediatric residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical College, followed by a fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Seattle Children’s Hospital and The University of Washington. Her clinical focus includes expertise in pre-hospital care and simulation. Appointed by the Governor of Arizona, Dr. Augenstein holds the role of Physician Specializing in Pediatric Medicine on the Medical Direction Commission at the Arizona Department of Health Services and serves on the Trauma and EMS Performance Improvement (TEPI) Committee. Dr. Augenstein is an Assistant Professor of Child Health and Emergency Medicine at the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine and the University of Arizona. __________________________________________________________________________________________________

Geriatrics: What's New with the Old Folks?

This presentation will be potpourri of fun facts and new research for our patients who have reached the ripe young age of 65 or more! We will review latest information on trauma, orthopedics, and everyone's favorite: anticoagulation!

Beth Ranney, MD graduated Arizona State University in 2004 with degrees in molecular biosciences and biotechnology, and anthropology. She worked at the Arizona Burn Center until 2006 and graduated from the University of Arizona College of Medicine in 2010. She completed her residency in emergency medicine at Maricopa Medical Center (now Valleywise Health) in 2013.

Dr. Ranney currently practices at several Banner emergency departments around the valley, mostly at Banner Ironwood & Goldfield as the EMS and Trauma director. She adores her husband Joe, who is a Phoenix firefighter, and her two sons Angus (9) and Ewan (7).
