“Q” You’re probably thinking to yourself right now ... “Which Q are we talking about ... and why are we wrestling with it?” Exactly! ... And, No! We’re not talking about the “Q” from Star Trek! When most of us see a “Q”, we think about the “Q” for questions (and hopefully the answers that go with them). But the Q on most dressage enthusiasts’ minds is the Q for Qualifying! The thing is, organizations like ours ... nonprofit membership orgs ... have lots of Qualifying rules and procedures floating around ... some of them are our local GMO’s rules and procedures and some of them are our governing organization’s rules and procedures. We’ve got State Qualifying, Regionals Qualifying, USDF Dressage Finals Qualifying, Year End Awards Qualifying ... EEEEK!!! And all of them depend on what type of membership we have. Let’s try to sort them out! NOTE: The program rules and qualifying criteria published herein are subject to additions or revisions. While every effort has been taken to avoid mistakes in this publication, the Arizona Dressage Association assumes no liability to anyone for errors or omissions. ADA/TDC/Cochise and USEF/ USDF rules supersede all other rules when qualifying for their championship programs. These rules are subject to change at any time. Changes and corrections subsequent to this publication are published in the ADA/TDC newsletters and websites and the USDF Connection and on the USDF website. REGION 5 DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE A very light winter so far in Colorado. Often in the 40s and 50s, but I really could ask for a bit more moisture so the pastures are thinker come spring… We are accepting bids for the 2018 Great American/USDF Region 5 Championships through February 10th. If anyone is interesting is placing a bid for the Regional Championships or has any questions about the process, please contact myself or the USDF office and we’ll be happy to help! The final date for a Regional Championship to be held in 2018 will be October 15th in order to fit into the National Championship time frame, so please keep that in mind when looking at facilities and possible weekends. The Finals will be held in Lexington, Kentucky in 2018. We are looking at a possible western venue, so there is an opportunity in the future for the US Dressage Finals to move west. If you have an educational activity that your barn, group or organization is doing, please let me know so I can add it to the Region 5 educational activity calendar that is sent out with the monthly Regional updates by USDF. We would love to keep everyone as informed as possible. There are many wonderful clinics and symposiums being offered all over our region that folks can audit or ride in. If you intend to qualify for Region 5 teams to the USDF/Platinum Performance North American Junior/Young Rider Dressage Championships, then your application and fee should be turned in to the USDF office by May 2nd in order to avoid stiffer fees. Final application deadline is May 16th, though again, the fees are 6 times as much, and absolutely no applications will be accepted after May 16th. If you plan to compete for NAJYRC, please also be sure to contact Joan Clay, our Region Coordinator for the FEI Juniors and Young Riders and let her know your intent. by Arizona’s local GMO’s. The ADA started the state championships program many years ago, modeling it after the USDF’s regional championships and it has morphed into a shared educational program between ADA, TDC and Cochise GMO’s with ADA and TDC hosting the state championships show each year in November on a rotational basis. The hope in developing a state championships program was for some of our grass roots members to have an opportunity to be rewarded for their dressage achievements at the local level without having to compete for championship titles at regional competitions which are often held long distances away. The defining Q’s for state championships are as follows: • Horses must pay a $25 nomination fee BEFORE any of their scores will count toward state champs qualifying. A horse can have multiple riders but only one (1) nomination fee per year is required. The Qualifying period begins on October 1st each year and runs through September 30th of the given state championships year. Moral to this rule: Don’t forget to nominate your horse before the November shows! Scores from these shows may qualify you and your horse for the next year’s state championships! • FAQ: If I compete in State Championships classes in November, will they count as qualifying for next year’s state championships if my score is good enough? A: No, sorry. You must earn your qualifying scores from “open” dressage classes where everyone has the same chance to earn that qualifying score ... i.e., state champs classes aren’t “open” to everyone. One must qualify to be in them! • Riders must be a local GMO member (either ADA, TDC or Cochise) by August 31st of the

wrestling with the “Q” cont. state championships competition year. • FAQ: Does the Owner also have to be a GMO member by August 31st? A: No, but we would love it if they would! ... And they do need a membership to earn ADA year end awards. • FAQ: If I have a USDF Participating Membership, does that work for State Championships? A: No. Only a local GMO membership works. The state champs program is geared toward members who support their local Arizona GMO’s. • Horse/Rider pairs must earn two “Qualifying” scores from two different judges. State champs current qualifying scores are based on an archived set of USDF regionals qualifying scores (not the current USDF regional qualifying scores) and can be viewed here: https://azdressage.org/az-state-championships-rules/. • FAQ: Do I have to be a member at the time my qualifying score is earned? A: No, but the sooner you are a member, the better! We love it when you support your local GMO! They work hard to bring you quality dressage education programs, including recognized shows. • FAQ: Can I get both scores from the same show? A: Yes, as long as you get them from two different judges! • FAQ: Do I need to have a score from the highest test of the level? A: No ... that only applies to Regionals qualifying. The actual state championship class will, however, be the highest test of the level. • FAQ: If I pay the $10 “Q” fee that I see for classes in the Prize List, does that qualify me for state championships? A: No! The $10 “Q” fee is a part of qualifying for Regional Championships ... NOT State Championships. • FAQ: Do I have to submit my qualifying scores to somebody? A: Not if they are earned at one of the “recognized” shows listed on Page 4 of this newsletter! The ADA has a scores compiling database person who processes every score earned by ADA, TDC and Cochise competitors throughout the year from all recognized Arizona shows. All shows that can be used for qualifying must either be hosted by one of these three GMO’s or “recognized” by our GMO’s as offering “open” dressage classes ... i.e, the classes must be open to all dressage riders and cannot be breed-restricted classes because we want every competitor to have the same number of chances to earn a qualifying score. If you attend a show not listed on our recognized shows chart that you think should be added to our list, please have their show management contact the scores compiling database person at scores@ azdressage.org for more information on getting their show “recognized” by the state championships GMO committee. • FAQ: What happens if my horse has multiple riders? A: Each horse/rider pair can earn two qualifying scores, but only one horse/rider paid can actually compete in state championship classes. You need to declare which pair will compete by the time you enter the state championships show. • Horse/rider combination must declare Rider’s status (Open, Adult Amateur or Junior/Young Rider). Championships are awarded for each division, so we need to know which division title you are vying for! Oh ... and each division has a different set of “qualifying” score percentages! wrestling with the “Q” cont. Regional Championship Qualifying Hosted this year by RMDS at the Colorado Horse Park, Parker, CO September 14-17, 2017 Qualifying Period: August 23, 2016 to August 21, 2017
Are you and your talented horse trying to qualify for USDF Region 5 Championships? These championships are a national USDF program which operates under USDF/USEF rules and procedures. Region 5 championships are held as early as September each year and are geared toward USDF Participating Members (a membership you purchase directly from the USDF and NOT from the local GMO). The Arizona Dressage Association tries to host Region 5 Championships at least once every two to three years as part of a rotation among the Region 5 GMO’s who employ management teams skilled enough to host this prestigious Level 4 championship. Regionals have become more popular with the onset of the USDF’s National Dressage Finals program which, up to this time, is being held only in Kentucky each November. Plans are being made to expand the Dressage Finals outreach throughout the country by hosting them from east to west on a set rotation making it more accessible to west-coast states like Arizona, Colorado, California, Washington, Orgeon, Utah, etc. Cross your fingers that an appropriate western finals venue can be located soon! The defining Q’s for regional championships are as follows: • Riders • Must have a USDF Participating* Membership (PM) at the time qualifying scores are earned and at the time of the championships. NOTE: The 2016 USDF Board of Governors meeting voted to increase participating membership dues beginning December 2017, so if you are consistently interested in competing for regional championships. you may want to explore your multiple-year USDF PM options ahead of that time. • FAQ: Can I use my GMO membership to qualify for Regionals? A: No, only a separate USDF participating membership works for regionals qualifying. • Must have a USEF membership (Junior Active, Senior Active, or Life) at the time the qualifying scores are earned and at the time of the championships. • Horses • Must have a USDF Lifetime Horse Registration (LHR) at the time qualifying scores are earned and at the time of the championships. • Must have a USEF (Annual or Lifetime) Horse recording at the time qualifying scores are earned and at the time of the championships. • USDF horse registration and USEF horse recording must be in the name(s) of the current owner(s) or lessee(s) of record. • A horse is not required to have breed registry papers. • Horse/rider combinations must earn two qualifying scores from two different USEF-licensed/USDFrecognized Dressage Competitions, from two different judges. • FAQ: Can I use any test of the level to qualify for regionals? A: No, only the highest test of the level can be used to qualify for Regionals. Consult each show’s Official Prize List for qualifying classes which have a “Q” next to them and which require a separate $10 “Q”ualifying fee paid to the USDF. 10 | THE CENTERLINE | FEBUARY

Great American Insurance Group/USDF Regional Championship Rule Update! • Effective December 1, 2016: Horse/rider combinations may enter more than one qualifying test, and qualifying Freestyle, at each level per day as Great American/USDF qualifying. (USEF DR 127.4) • FAQ: Does this mean I can earn two qualifying scores for a level in one day? A: No. Only one of your qualifying scores for that level will count on that day. This rule change just gives you two chances to earn a single qualifying score for a certain level on any given show day. Be sure to consult the Official Prize List for your show. Usually the opportunity to enter two qualifying classes consists of entering a Test 3 “Q” class offered for any given level and also entering a TOC Test 3 “Q” class offered for that same level on the same day. • FAQ: Do I have to pay the $10 “Q” fee twice if I want two chances to qualify on the same day? A: Yes, and the fee must be paid with your show entry or before you ride the test. • FAQ: What if I entered two qualifying classes, paid two $10 “Q” fees and earned my qualifying score with the first “Q” test I rode? Can I get a refund of my “Q” fee for the 2nd test since I no longer need it to qualify that day? A: That depends. The USDF regionals committee recommends that you consult with the show secretary as soon as you’ve earned your first qualifying score to then “scratch” the 2nd qualifying class you entered so you will be eligible for a refund of the second $10 “Q” fee you paid for that class. USDF refund rules apply. Consult show management to determine their policy on this issue. • FAQ: Can I get the “Q” fee refunded if I ride my test but don’t get a qualifying score? A: No. The USDF does not allow a refund if you tried but didn’t succeed in earning a qualifying score. • FAQ: Can I qualify with any test of the level if I try to qualify with a TOC class? A: No, only the highest test of the level can be used to qualify for regionals. • FAQ: How do I know if a class can be used for qualifying? A: Look at the Official Prize List (OPL) for each show to see which classes have a “Q” next to them. NOTE: This “Q” is a separate $10 fee which must be paid in addition to the normal class fee either with your show entry or before you ride your test and is ultimately paid to the USDF. • FAQ: Can I pay the $10 “Q” fee after I ride my test? A: No. You must pay the “Q” fee before you ride the test. • FAQ: Does this “Q” fee qualify me for State Championships? A: NO! The “Q” fee only applies to qualifying for Regionals. For more information, please become familiar with all of the USDF program rules available on the USDF.org website. USDF will presume qualified horse/rider combinations will compete in the region in which the rider resides as determined by the address associated with the rider’s membership information on file as of July 1. Riders are NOT required to be a resident of the region to compete in that region’s championship. Riders, who wish to compete at Regional Championships in a region other than their region of residence, must submit a Change of Region Form, at no cost if done prior to July 1st.

USDF Dressage Finals Presented by Adequan, November 9-12, 2017 at the Kentucky Horse Park, Lexington, KY Qualifying Period: Through October 18th. Trying to qualify for USDF Dressage Finals? This USDF program is an Invitational competition using the USEF/ USDF Regional Championship program to qualify. Qualifying takes place at each of the nine Great American/ USDF Regional Dressage Championships, based on either: 1. Placing at the Regional Championships in a class and eligible division offered at the US Dressage Finals, or 2. Wild Card Eligibility. Automatic Invitations will be issued as follows: 1. The top two out of the top 5 eligible horse/rider combinations who have declared and nominated by the specific deadlines for their Regional Championship, will be eligible for invitation. 2. Wild card eligible horse/rider combinations will be considered invited provided they have nominated by the specific deadline for their Regional Championship. I would love to fill you in on the rest of the ins and outs of qualifying for this prestigious championship, but they can be somewhat daunting when you throw in the Declaration/Nomination process the USDF has implemented and the Wild Card invitations that go out in addition to the Championship/Reserve Championship qualifiers. My hope is that if you’re looking to compete at USDF Dressage Finals, you probably already know what you’re doing!! If not, please consult the USDF Dressage Finals website for those details! :-)
ADA Year End Awards Horses and Riders of the Year at all Levels and all Divisions, Sandra Kale Award, Cameo Award and Pantano Award. Qualifying Period: Membership Year from December 1, 2016 through November 30, 2017. Trying to qualify for ADA Year End Awards? The Arizona Dressage Association each year honors its member riders, member owners and their horses with horse and rider awards for their annual achievements in Arizona dressage competitions - both recognized and schooling. The shows listed on the chart on Page 4 of this newsletter are all qualifiers for ADA Year End Awards as are the regular ADA schooling shows. One caveat is that you must nominate yourself for schooling show awards before scores are earned! The great news is that the ADA scores compiling chairperson does a lot of work for you by automatically tracking each of the scores you have earned throughout the qualifying period. So what are the “Q’s” required to earn ADA Year End Awards? • Rider and Owner of the horse must be current ADA GMO Members BEFORE scores are earned. (Scores from Regional and State Championships are not included.) • FAQ: If I have a TDC or Cochise GMO Membership, can this count? A: No. These are “ADA” year end awards and are given to ADA members only. • If Horse is owned by a Business, then an Individual person from that Business must have a current GMO membership with ADA. • Volunteerism and/or Service or Support to the ADA. 4-hour minimum (Service/Support equivalents can apply. See full rules and volunteerism/Service requirements online) • ALL current ADA members are automatically eligible for Year End Awards. • Scores can be earned at any Arizona dressage show hosted by or recognized by the ADA. • All Horse Awards – Scores may be earned by more than one Rider. • All Rider Awards – Scores may be earned riding more than one horse. The average of the Rider’s scores must be greater than or equal to the AZ State Championships qualifying score for the respective division and level. • Scores must be earned during the Membership Year, December 1, 2016 through November 30, 2017. • Musical Freestyle tests are only eligible for Musical Freestyle awards. • Sandra Kale Award: Open to all horses registered at least 50% Arabian blood. Owners must provide copy of horse’s registration papers to the Awards Compiling Chairperson to be eligible. Email: scores@ azdressage.org. • Cameo Award: Open to all FEI horses trained and ridden by an Arizona resident from 2nd Level on. Owner must fill out “Training History” and return to Awards Compiling Chairperson. Email: scores@ azdressage.org
• Pantano Award: For riders at each show who earn the highest scores in each division at each level and who meet the criteria for the Pantano award become candidates for the Pantano drawing held at the annual ADA Awards Banquet . Riders must be Individual ADA members or the Primary Member of a Family Membership |Once a rider has won the $1,000 Pantano Award, that rider is no longer eligible for further drawings. Whew! National Wear Red Day® is Friday, February 3, 2017 Why Go Red? Heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year, killing approximately one woman every 80 seconds. In the past, heart disease and heart attack have been predominantly associated with men. Historically, men have been the subjects of the research done to understand heart disease and stroke, which has been the basis for treatment guidelines and programs. This led to an oversimplified, distorted view of heart disease and risk, which has worked to the detriment of women. Because women have been largely ignored as a specific group, their awareness of their risk of this oftenpreventable disease has suffered. Only 55 percent of women realize heart disease is their No. 1 killer and less than half know what are considered healthy levels for cardiovascular risk factors like blood pressure and cholesterol. The Go Red For Women movement works to make sure women know they are at risk so they can take action to protect their health. Heart Attack Signs in Women 1. Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the center of your chest. It lasts more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back. 2. Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. 3. Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort. 4. Other signs such as breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness. As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/ vomiting and back or jaw pain. If you have any of these signs, call 9-1-1 and get to a hospital right away. That’s why Go Red For Women is encouraging all women to schedule a visit with their doctor to learn their personal health numbers including ; 1. Blood Pressure 2. Cholesterol 3. Blood Sugar 4. Body Mass Index (BMI) and assess their risk for heart disease and stroke.

TDF Announces Winners of 2016 Two-Tempi Challenge, Sponsored by The Horse of Course January, 2017 – The Dressage Foundation (TDF) held the second annual Two-Tempi Challenge, sponsored by The Horse of Course, in 2016 with great response from riders and donors. Twenty riders participated in the Challenge by riding as many consecutive two-tempi changes as they could. These riders then found supporters to make a donation to TDF based on the number of changes completed. Overall, $18,153 was raised to support TDF’s grants and programs through the Challenge. WHAT IS TDF’S TWO-TEMPI CHALLENGE PRESENTED BY THE HORSE OF COURSE Riders who have horses capable of doing two-tempi changes are invited to participate in a Regional and National competition to raise funds for The Dressage Foundation (TDF). Each rider works with an individual, GMO, stable, or any group of dressage friends that is willing to make a pledge to TDF for each two-tempi change.
THE WINNERS At the end of each calendar year, TDF and The Horse of Course will announce National and Regional Two-Tempi Challenge Champions and Reserve Champions, based on the number of completed consecutive two-tempis performed. TDF and The Horse of Course will also present awards for the top two donor groups.

The horse and rider teams may use the best of three efforts. Start the count with “one” on the first flying change and count to the last two-tempi. If a change is not clean, it still counts as a two-tempi. As soon as the horse loses count (by doing a one-tempi, a three-tempi, or no change), the effort is over. A horse and rider combination can participate monthly in the Two-Tempi Challenge.
Your Two-Tempi Challenge must be videoed and sent via YouTube, email, or DVD to TDF (using a cell phone to video is acceptable). A link or file can be emailed to info@dressagefoundation.org, uploaded on our website, or mailed to TDF’s office (information below). You will receive confirmation that TDF has received the video and pledged donations.
SUPPORTERS Any individual or group may pledge to support the horse and rider team. The group or individual may pledge any dollar amount per change that the rider successfully completes (see above).
