REGION 5 DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Another great competition year has passed for USDF and we have wrapped up the Great American/USDF Region 5 Championships in Scottsdale, Arizona. I’m very sorry I wasn’t able to attend this year due to family commitments but the classes looked quite large and there was great representation from all over our region. Many many thanks to the great show management team and the wonderful volunteers of the Arizona Dressage Association and other volunteers from all over the Region who pitched in to help at the show. Thanks to everyone for joining in for a fantastic show. The 2016 Great American/USDF Region 5 Championships will be September 15-18, 2016 at the Stanley Park Fairgrounds in Estes Park, Colorado. The Rocky Mountain Dressage Society will be our host and we’re looking forward to another great year. We’re hoping for some new and diverse bids for the 2017 championships. I’d love to hear from any interested parties as soon as possible so I can get you a list of the information we’re going to need for those bids. All Regional Championships still must be held by mid-October since the winners of the Adult Amateur and Open divisions will continue to feed into the Nationals Championships. We will know hopefully by the USDF Convention if we will be seeing the National Championships rotate to a new venue for 2017. The National Championships keep growing and it’s great to see so many folks from the Region 5 Championships planning to attend the Nationals. The USDF convention is just around the corner and it’s time to book your hotel rooms, airfare and register for the convention and symposium if you haven’t done so already! It’s Vegas Baby! December 2nd-5th. Information and registration forms for the Convention and Symposium are available at www.usdf.org/ Convention/. If you’re coming to the awards dinner, let me know and we’ll save room for you at our Region 5 tables! THE MEETING WAS CALLED TO ORDER AT 6:30 P.M. 1. Secretary’s Report – MOTION: Betty Drake moved to accept the Secretary’s report as printed in the Centerline and posted on the web. VOTE: Unanimous. RESULT: Motion Carried. 5. Treasurers’ and Finance Report – September, 2015: Operating Acct - $66,682.81; Reserve Accounts to cover catastrophic show/ equipment loss fall $12,131.24 short of the reserve goal; Credit Card Acct. - $2,285.51; Pantano CD - $11,435.82. MOTION: Lara Bowles moved to approve the Treasurer’s Report as presented. VOTE: Unanimous. RESULT: Motion Carried. 6. Recognized Shows (1st VP) – Volunteers still needed for Regional and Octoberfest shows. Photography backdrop discussion. Kim Pribble will bring and organize most of the decorations for the backdrop. 7. Schooling Shows (2nd VP) – Spirit costumes (attire) will be allowed for the October 31st show. Lara Bowles will donate a Spirit award for best costume worn in the spirit of Halloween. Michell Combs will judge the show. STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS: 8. Inspiring Through The Levels Symposium

with Charlotte DuJardin

A fun group of Arizona dressage enthusiasts attended a Through The Dressage Levels symposium with Charlote DuJardin October 3-4, 2015 at the lovely Devonwood Equestrian center near Portland, Oregon. Charlotte DuJardin, who I assume needs no introduction but if so, resides in Great Britain. She has the current World’s Record scores in the dressage rankings for Grand Prix, Grand Prix Special and Grand Prix Freestyle. She is ranked number one in the FEI World Individual Dressage Ranking. She was the 2014 Individual World Champion at Grand Prix Special and Freestyle at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games and she is the 2012 Olympic Gold medal individual and team winner. Now she is preparing for the upcoming Olympics in Rio. Charlotte specializes in training dressage horses from the very beginning to grand prix. Charlotte shared a lot of personal stories about her experiences leading up to her current “superstar” status. She didn’t come from a wealthy background but she was lucky to have access to horses from a young age. She trained advanced dressage movements on her Thoroughbred when she was just 11 or 12 years old. Charlotte had some instruction and eventually she landed a job as a groom for another British Olympian named Carl Hessler. A short time into her employment, Charlotte saw that Carl was trying to sell a difficult and hot horse. Charlotte, who was a “nobody” back then, begged Carl 8 | THE CENTERLINE | NOVEMBER 2015

not to sell him and to let her ride the horse. Eventually Carl agreed. The horse, Valegro, is the amazing talent that has taken Charlotte to an unbelievable riding career. Charlotte shared that there were many nay-sayers in her life. These people told her many negative things including that she was just an amateur rider and not worthy of such opportunities. However, Charlotte’s perfectionist attitude and courage persevered. She says the hardest part of being at the level that she is at today is dealing with media and fan expectations. She feels the pressure to always have the perfect ride but she also knows that every person and horse has good and bad days. The symposium had about 1800 audience members. We had the privilege to learn about Charlotte’s training program as she applied her program to the symposium’s horse and rider combinations. She provided a lot of specific instruction and training exercises to improve each horse, who ranged from 4 years old to 20 years old and through all levels of training under saddle. The common theme was to always keep the horse in front of the rider’s leg and for the rider to not get stuck in one rhythm. Charlotte was very adamant that each rider be brave and be correct. If a rider rode a bad transition, she had them do it again. If the rider didn’t ride a corner correctly, the rider had to do it again. If the rider was not clear in making the horse go forward from the leg she told them to KICK and go for the “yeehaw”! Charlotte said she wasn’t fond of using a whip except to train the flying change or the advanced dressage movements piaffe and passage. She believes the rider’s leg must be the aid to make the horse go forward. She also was direct about not punishing a horse for a mistake, but to keep riding forward. She told the riders, “Don’t make a thing of it, or the horse will be tense.” Charlotte says when she rides horses she bends, straightens, stretches and collects. She says her goal in riding is “to give my horse as much confidence as possible.”

There are many write-ups of the clinic that I’ve seen posted on our various Facebook pages. They describe the training philosophy and methods quite well. If you need access to any of them, let me know. It was a wonderful experience to learn from Charlotte DuJardin. She’s such a down-to-earth person. At the symposium, Charlotte was clear, understandable and exhibited a fun sense of humor. Now armed with pages and pages of notes with helpful exercises, training tips and explanations, I’m eager to get started on revising my project horse’s training plan.

Equus Dressage has had a VERY busy couple of months! In September we went to the Andalusian World cup in Las Vegas and everyone was very successful! El Samaritano was put on the map with well presented rides. Sandy Luebbe debuted her stallion ‘Gabito’ and took home top placings including Top Five awards. This was also Sandy’s first Dressage show! Kathleen Downie and her stallion ‘Poblano Mor’ were Reserve Champions in the Suitability class and won training level classes plus Top Five!. Tania Radda was successful at first level with top placings and her horse Teodoro lll debuted at Second level with a 65% with Tracey Krajenke. Paula Paglia showed El Samaritano’s ‘Samaritano lX’ and was Reserve FEI horse. Most of us rode in the Dressage Hack classes and had a blast! South Point is a superb venue and we NEED to have shows there! The Jan Ebeling clinic was a huge success, and we cannot wait to have him back in November. The dates have changed to November 15-16. Audit fee is $20. Info on the ADA calendar. We at El Samaritano wish to welcome our newest trainer and team mate Miguel Undabarrena to the facility. So excited to have him! We wish to welcome our new equine friends ‘Baltic Idun’ a double diploma SWB mare owned by Kathleen Downie, ‘Ilustre’ and Grand Prix PRE Stallion owned by Sandy Luebbe and Phil Merrill to arrive from Spain early November , ‘Novio’ a coming two year old PRE colt that was purchased by Sandy Luebbe in Las Vegas at the World show and ‘Jajan’ a PRE Prix St. George gelding owned by Tami George. Congratulations to Lindsay Naas and ‘Roy-Els Belle of the Ball’ on TWO World Championships at First and Second Level in Oklahoma. They do it again and moved up a level. Great job! Christie Jones and her beautiful gelding ‘Claudio’ rock the 2015 Nutrena USEA American Eventing Championships in Texas! They were third in the Adult Amateur Novice Division and first in the Team Championships! There were 33 in the novice and 7 teams! Awesome job! Congratulations to Tania Radda and ‘Teodore lll’ on their USDF year end awards. They were All Breed Award Champions at Training Level (IALHA Purebred), Reserve Champions for the Vintage Cup (IALHA Purebred), and third at First Level (IALHA Purebred) It just keeps coming for these two! Lindsay Naas and her powerhouse mare also won awards with USDF. Reserve Champions at First Level/Morgan horse, Reserve Champions at First Level Freestyle/Morgan horse, and fifth place in Open First level Lindsay Naas/Tracey Krajenke. Another great team! I always loved horses but being a city kid, never had the opportunity to own a horse until 10 years ago when a forlorn, 11 year old Arabian gelding rescue dropped into my lap after washing out of a children’s riding school program. After a few years of both of us relearning the basics, we embraced dressage wholeheartedly despite advancing age and arthritis! I ran for the ADA board two years ago out of interest in learning how the organization worked and have enjoyed every minute of being a board member. I currently serve as the Volunteer Committee Chair and also the Vendor Coordinator. I look forward to continuing to serve the ADA members and hope to inspire more involvement with our East Valley members.  Lara Bowles My name is Lara Bowles, and I am running for re-election to the Arizona Dressage Association Board of Directors. I joined the board last year to fill a vacancy, and have served as Second Vice President. I have served the Board in the past, chairing the Education Committee years ago. I’ve been on and around horses since a very young age, but really started riding in a structured manner back in the late 90’s. My background includes both 4-H and Pony Club, and I believe very strongly in riders having a solid foundation in horsemanship. Despite convention, in 2014 I earned my USDF Bronze aboard my then 27 year old gelding Fameus (“Frango”), who I’d purchased as a green 14 year old back in 2001. This past year on the board I’ve been increasingly involved with the Schooling Show series, as well as volunteering regularly at shows and clinics. I very much enjoy supporting and encouraging riders in their growth and experience with dressage, and hope to continue to serve towards this end on the ADA Board.  Sarah Lindsten I have been a member of the Arizona Dressage Association Board of Directors since 2013 as Education Chair. During this time I have organized some fun and informative clinics for the ADA members such as the October 2013 Conrad Schumacher Clinic, April 2014 Jan Ebeling Clinic, and the May 2015 Cynthia Collins, Freestyle Clinic. In addition to these riding clinics, I also coordinated a Scribe Clinic which was facilitated by Bev Rogers. I recently earned both my USDF Bronze and Silver Medals. • Trailer Safety Clinic I work for the Mayo Clinic in the Continuous Professional Development Department as an Education Coordinator where I assist in the planning and coordination of Continuing Medical Education courses. I recently completed the USDF L Program where I graduated with Distinction. I have been judging local schooling shows for the past year. I hope to further my judging education by completing the USEF Dressage Judges “r” Training Program.  Sue Leutwyler Dressage has been my passion since I was a young child growing up in Iowa. Like Heather, I was raised a city kid and didn’t have access to horses, but I’ll always remember the first time I got hooked on Dressage when I watched the Lipizzan stallions perform at our Iowa State Fair. Their beauty and grace and the nearly invisible aids of their riders cemented my love of horses and my riding goals from that moment forward. To grow up and become part of the Olympic sport of Dressage has been a privilege and a joy. I have benefited from Arizona Dressage Association and our local professionals bringing top notch educational events, clinics and lectures, and excellent schooling and recognized show opportunities to our state. I’ve served ADA in many different capacities since 2006, and would love to keep paying this privilege forward by continuing to work both at the local and national levels of our sport for the benefit of our GMO and its members. Get to know the rules DR116 The Impulsion, The Submission 1. Impulsion is the term used to describe the transmission of an eager and energetic, yet controlled, propulsive energy generated from the hind quarters into the athletic movement of the horse. Its ultimate expression can be shown only through the horse’s soft and swinging back guided by elastic contact with the rider’s hand. a. Speed, of itself, has little to do with impulsion; the result is more often a flattening of the gaits. A visible characteristic is a more pronounced articulation of the hind leg, in a continuous rather than staccato action. The hock, as the hind foot leaves the ground, should first move forward rather than being pulled upwards, but certainly not backwards. A prime ingredient of impulsion is the time the horse spends in the air rather than on the ground. Impulsion is, therefore, seen only in those gaits that have a period of suspension. b. Impulsion is a precondition for a good collection in trot and canter. If there is no impulsion, then there is nothing to collect. 2. Submission does not mean subordination, but an obedience revealing its presence by a constant attention, willingness and confidence in the whole behavior of the horse as well as by the harmony, lightness and ease it is displaying in the execution of the different movements. The degree of the submission is also demonstrated by the way the horse accepts the bit, with an elastic contact and a supple poll. Resistance to or evasion of the rider’s hand, being either “above the bit” or “behind the bit” demonstrate lack of submission. The main contact with the horse’s mouth must be through the snaffle bit. a. Putting out the tongue, keeping it above the bit or drawing it up altogether, as well as grinding the teeth or agitation of the tail, are mostly signs of nervousness, tension or resistance on the part of the horse and must be taken into account by the judges in their marks for every movement concerned, as well as in the collective mark for “submission”. b. The first thought when considering submission is willingness, that the horse understands what is being asked of it and is confident enough in the rider to react to the aids without fear or tension. c. The horse’s straightness, uphill tendency and balance enable it to stay in front of the rider’s legs and go forward into an accepting and self-carrying contact with the bit. This is what really produces the picture of harmony and lightness. Fulfillment of the main requirements/movements of a Dressage test is the primary criterion for submission.

Barn Tip: Outdoor Folding Wagon Are you planning to go to an out of town show this season? You will have to haul all your stuff from your horse trailer to your tack room by yourself, the horse never seems to help us with this. At some shows it can be a long haul from the trailer parking area to the show grounds stabling. A folding canvas wagon will take up no space in the trailer and will make those back and forth trips through gravel, grass or mud a lot easier. The wagon I have came from Wal-Mart and is rated to hold 225 lbs. Do a little research and find one that will work for you.

ADA FUTURITY – SPRING CELEBRATION SHOW RULES AND REGULATIONS

ELIGIBILITY

1. All horses entered must be four, five or six years old when competing in the Futurity. 2. All horse owners and riders must be current ADA members for nomination and when competing in the Futurity. st 3. Horses may not have competed in First Level prior to opening nomination date of October 1 or before any late nomination. Horses may not compete above First Level until after the Futurity. First Level tests include Young Horse, Para Equestrian and Eventing tests as they are listed in USEF rule DR119 as First Level tests. As an exception, ADA allows competing in USEF and FEI Four-Year-Old tests prior to competing in the Futurity.

Owners must enter their horses in the Futurity Classes at ADA’s Spring Celebration Show (First Level Tests 1 and 2) and pay the entry fees for these classes separately.

AWARDS AND PURSE DISTRIBUTION Open Division and Amateur/JRYR Division each have a guaranteed added purse of $300.00 donated by ADA. Horses are ridden in First Level Tests 1 and 2. Winner will be determined by the highest total average percentage score from all judges on the two tests. The Open winner receives the Risinger Futurity Perpetual Trophy plus trophy for new division. The ADA Futurity Chairman reserves the right to cancel this Futurity for any reason deemed necessary (with approval of the ADA Board) and all fees will be refunded, less $5.00 per nomination). All nomination fees (except in case Rule 5) will go into the purse. The purse for each division is a combination $300 donated by ADA plus the nomination fees collected for each division. The prize money distribution is determined by the number of finalists in each division. Trophies, ribbons and office fees will be sponsored. Copy of registration papers or a veterinarian’s proof of age must be submitted with the first payment to Futurity. No refund of nomination fees after October 10th. Rider must be declared by owner on final nomination date of March 1st. Nominations close on March 1st. st No changes after March 1 ;; NO EXCEPTIONS. The Futurity is held during the ADA Spring Celebration Show. Futurity scores do not count toward other special and perpetual trophy awards. Tests may be studied at the end of the first day of the competition, but will be retained by the Show Secretary until completion of the Futurity Awards Presentation. Tests will be returned after the Awards ceremony. Each Futurity entry must pay Show Class Fees (First Level Test 1 and First Level Test 2) at the Spring Celebration Show over and above any and all other Futurity nomination payments. Horses and riders must be present at the Futurity Awards Ceremony to receive awards and prizes. Failure, without prior permission of the competition manager, to be present and properly attired will eliminate the official score and placing, and the next highest score will move up. If Awards Ceremonies are scheduled in conflict with a competitor’s/horse’s preparation or scheduled ride, the competitor and/or horse will be excused from the Awards Ceremony with permission of the Show Manager. Requests to

be excused from the awards ceremony must occur by end of the show day Saturday before the scheduled ceremony Sunday, except in the case of an emergency . Horse leg wraps may be white or black, but are not required. The schedule and location for the Awards Ceremony will be posted in the show secretary’s office by noon on Saturday. Checks will be delivered to the Owner/Lessee no later than 30 days after the Competition.

Arizona Dressage Association Scholarship To promote the educational advancement of local dressage riders, Arizona Dressage Association annually sponsors up to one (1) Junior/Young Rider Scholarship, up to one (1) Open Scholarship and up to three (3) Adult Amateur Scholarships. Each Scholarship award will be up to $500 and will be awarded upon the completion of the recipient’s educational activity and responsibilities outlined below. Application must be completed and delivered by February 1st to Ann Damiano at 4819 E. Sleepy Ranch Road, Cave Creek, AZ 85331-4414, or email adamiano@cox.net. Late applications will NOT be considered. The ADA Board of Directors will appoint three non-board ADA members to serve on a Scholarship Review Committee. This committee’s responsibility is to evaluate each application based on the stated criteria and make a recommendation to the Board of Directors. CRITERIA:

Open and Adult Amateur applicants must be an ADA member for a minimum of three (3) years including the current membership year. JR/YR must be a member for a minimum of two (2) years including the current membership year. Membership must be in good standing. The educational opportunity requested in the application must be a specific activity that the applicant has established that promotes dressage education and dressage principle, and goes beyond regular lessons. Examples include clinics and training programs offered by recognized and/or certified instructors as well as USDF- and USEF-sponsored programs. Open and Adult Amateur applicants must have volunteered their time or expertise in some way that has benefited the ADA membership as a whole. Examples include volunteer (not paid) service hours (minimum 8 hours suggested) during the current and previous year at ADA Shows or events, service on ADA Board or Committees, providing a host venue for an ADA event, organizing a clinic or fundraising event for JR/YR’s, judging, writing Centerline articles, etc. JR/YR must have active volunteer service (minimum 4 hours suggested) during current and previous year. Written verification of service must be submitted with application and will be strongly considered during selection process.

RECIPIENT’S RESPONSIBILITIES TO RECEIVE AWARD MONIES:

The educational activity must be completed by December 31st. Centerline articles or future volunteer arrangements must be completed and receipts must be submitted by February 1st of the following year. Confirmation of activity and receipts for expenditures to be submitted to the Scholarship Committee Chair and then forwarded to Treasurer for payment. By accepting scholarships, recipients must agree to volunteer at a future date their time and/or expertise in some way that will benefit the ADA membership as a whole. Some ways that members give back for their scholarship assistance are writing a Centerline article on their educational experience, serving on ADA Board or Committees, providing a host venue for an ADA event, organizing a clinic or fundraising event for JR/YR’s, complimentary judging at an ADA event, etc.
