The Associated Students of the University of Arizona serves as the student government for undergraduate students, offering many programs, clubs, resources and services.

Established in 1913, ASUA now represents students with the goal of engaging and empowering, and is responsible for over 500 clubs and organizations on campus.

ASUA is composed of a student body president, 20 undergraduate senators, an executive vice president and an administrative vice president, all of whom are voted into their positions by the student body in the spring.

In addition, there are many directors, staffers and chairs for the different programs, services and resources ASUA offers.

Some of the programs offered by ASUA include: Legal Services, which offers students free legal advice from an attorney; Students for Sustainability, which aims to make the campus increasingly more conscious and sustainable; the Wildcat Events Board, which is in charge of planning events on campus; SafeRide, which offers students a free ride home at night; and VolunteerUA, which gives students opportunities to give back.

The new guard Meet Michael Finnegan, the 2016-2017 ASUA president who hopes to be a great voice and representative for students.

Finnegan, a senior studying philosophy, politics, economics and law, has been involved with ASUA since his freshman year, and worked closely with the former president as his chief of staff last year.

Finnegan said he hopes to continue to be an adequate voice for students, listening and pushing their concerns to administration and the Arizona Board of Regents, especially when it comes to issues like tuition and funding.

He added that one of his biggest goals for the upcoming school year is to reach out to the different cultural centers, clubs and the newly formed Marginalized Students of the University of Arizona in order to make sure their voices are being heard.

Finnegan said he also hopes to continue efforts on projects like the Arizona Student

Government Collaborative to better represent Arizona’s student voice and to keep cost of attendance low, despite budget cuts.

His advice to incoming students is to take and find opportunities around campus.

“Getting involved, really experiencing all the campus has to offer and stepping outside of your comfort zone is so important,” Finnegan said.

Graduates have a voice, too The Graduate and Professional Student Council is on campus to serve as the UA’s graduate student government.

GPSC’s mission as stated in its constitution is, “to promote the academic, economic and social aims of the graduate and professional students of the [UA], and to establish effective communication within the university and with other organizations.”

GPSC is composed of representatives, a president and a vice president, who are elected by graduate and professional students.

GPSC addresses graduate student issues including tuition, transparency, graduate student teachers and their pay, and looks into the concerns of graduate students.

Old dog, new tricks Meet Zach Brooks, the 2016-2017 GPSC president.

Brooks, who has previously served as GPSC president for three years, is currently studying second language acquisition.

GPSC plans to tackle a number of issues throughout the year to improve the wellbeing of graduate students and professionals on campus, Brooks said.

He added that some of his main concerns are graduate student compensation, cost of attendance and increasing transparency within GPSC. ASUA and GPSC serve as a medium between students and administration.

Breaking down those nuisance fees

Tuition isn’t the only cost of entry to the UA. Look a little closer at the fine print and an incoming freshman will notice a myriad of fees tacked onto the UA’s price of attendance.

The mandatory fees, paid each semester by every student, include the Student Services Fee and the Arizona Financial Aid Trust Fee. The latter of the two provides state-based financial aid to students who “demonstrate a clear need for financial aid by virtue of their special circumstances,” or who are “underrepresented in the university population,” according to the Bursar’s Office website. The fee was approved through student referenda on campuses of Arizona universities and began in the fall semester of 1990.

There are fees that students can opt out of each semester, such as the Recreation Center Bond Retirement Fee, Recreation Center Program Fee, Student Media Fee and Wildcat Events Board Fee, according to the Bursar’s Office website.

To opt out, students must submit a request for exception to the respective department or office where the fee belongs.

The fees are “generally designed to fit a need to better serve students or provide additional support,” wrote Kasey Urquidez, vice president of Enrollment Management & Student Affairs Advancement, in an email. Some fees have to be approved by the Arizona Board of Regents, depending on the fee’s cost.

“No fees are charged without a full review and close look at student benefits overall,” Urquidez wrote.

Most of the costs of the fees have not changed, according to Urquidez.

Students can use their financial aid to cover the fees, according to Rebekah Hoppel Salcedo, director of Scholarships and Financial Aid. Some fees cover different areas within the one fee, such as the mandatory Information Technology/Library Fee. Fifty-eight percent of the fee goes to Information Technology while the rest goes to the UA library system, according to the Bursar’s Office website.

The funds from this portion of the fee go toward increasing access to resources like databases and e-books, expanding library hours, and 3D printing and 3D scanning services, according to Robyn Huff-Eibl, a team leader for Access and Information Services.

an email. “We engage and actively meet with the students to ensure our data and student needs are in alignment.”

Another fee that goes to different areas is the Health and Recreation Fee, which goes to both Campus Recreation and Campus Health Service.

The fee, $150 per semester paid by all students, can be refunded to students that are off campus for a semester if they submit requests for exceptions to the department of Campus Recreation. Fifty-three percent of the fee goes to Campus Health while 47 percent goes to Campus Recreation.

The fee covers the cost of access to campus recreation facilities so students do not have to pay a membership fee for the Student Recreation Center. It also funds facility maintenance, equipment and the software system, and

pays for the salary of the majority of student staff for Campus Recreation, according to John Lloyd, one of the two interim associate directors for Campus Recreation.

There are some fees that only have to be paid once, like the Freshman Fee. What the Freshman Fee—a $10 fee that every student pays each semester of their freshman year— goes toward depends on a committee comprised of faculty and students that then makes recommendations to the vice president of Student Affairs, according to the Bursar’s Office website.

The fee is used to support programs and services for first-year students and their success at the university.

Get to know every dorm, district on campus

Moving away from home is one of the biggest fears that comes with incoming college students.

Freshman students have oftentimes never lived away from home for an extended period of time, and the thought of living in a small cube with another person is a lot to handle.

The UA provides 23 residence halls for its students. While you can technically spend your entire time as a college student in the dorms, 80 percent of on-campus residents are freshman, according to the official website of UA Residence Life.

Not all freshmen are required to live on campus, however, being on campus can help students become integrated with the Wildcat community.

If you’re worried about where you might end up for the next year or more, do not fear. Here is your guide to residence life and an overview of some of the resident halls the UA campus has to offer.

Park District The Park District features some of the better-known residence halls on campus.

These dorms are just south of Old Main and close to Euclid Avenue and Sixth Street.

Within the Park District is Coronado Residence Hall, which is the most populated dorm at 776 students and one of the more famous dorms on campus. It also has a nine-story view of the UA. The rooms each house two residents, but what makes this dorm unique is the suitestyle bathrooms that serve four students each.

The second most populated dorm on campus is Árbol de la Vida Residence Hall, also in the Park District.

The dorm houses 719 residents during the year and is one of the newest dorms on campus.

Arbol, as it is commonly referred to, is an honors-only dorm consisting of five

Coronado is in the Park District, one of many residence halls and districts spread around the university.

buildings connected by sky bridges. This dorm is commonly recognized for its sustainable design.

Other dorms in the Park District are Arizona-Sonora Residence Hall and the Kaibab-Huachuca Residence Hall, which hold 498 and 342 residents, respectively.

Students of the Park District also have easy access to the Park Student Union, which houses a number of popular eateries and academic resources for students.

Highland District The Highland District is home to many of the newest dorms on campus.

These residence halls straddle Highland Avenue and are situated between the UA Mall and the Student Recreation Center.

On the west side of Highland Avenue, you can find Pueblo De La Cienega, Posada

San Pedro and Villa Del Puente Residence Halls.

These dorms are all identical in layout with Pueblo De La Cienega and PSP each housing 238 residents and VDP housing 300 residents.

Located on the east side of Highland Avenue is Likins Residence Hall, Arbol’s little brother.

Like Arbol, Likins has multiple buildings connected by sky bridges, however, it only houses about half the residents with a capacity of 369.

The rest of the Highland District contains five other residence halls varying in size including Navajo-Pina Residence hall, which is built into the lower parts of Arizona Stadium.

All residents in the Highland District have easy access to Highland Market,

Historic District The Historic District is the largest of the three districts and encompasses 10 residence halls.

The district encompasses all dorms north of Fourth Street and includes some of the oldest buildings on campus. Many of these residence halls are close to Old Main, the Student Union Memorial Center and the center of campus.

The Rawls-Eller Lodge is one of the newest additions to the Historic District and was recently converted from a fraternity house to a dorm.

This hall houses 64 residents, features a large courtyard, a private basketball court and private bathrooms.

The Gila, Maricopa and Yuma Residence Halls are housed in older buildings and are located just off of Second Street and Park Avenue.

Maricopa is an all-female dorm and Yuma is reserved for honors students.

The final highlight of the Historic District is the Babcock Residence Hall. The hall is the furthest dorm from the center of campus, located across Speedway Boulevard, near the Banner Health—University Medical Center, but the residence hall does have its own pool, making it unique from every other dorm on campus.

College fantasies come to fruition

any freshmen come into college with fantasies of grandeur. I say fantasies, and not delusions, because though some are unlikely, several actually do end up coming to fruition.

Your dorm-mates might become your close friends, the cafeteria food might not consist solely of hamburgers and grilled cheese, and your long-distance relationship might last. But it is important to note the key word: might.

When I was preparing myself for college, people of all ages and types seemed to take impending-freshmanhood as an open invitation for unsolicited advice. It seems as though everyone takes your important milestone and tries to turn it into an excuse for their personal, never-ending nostalgia.

become our way of relating to the world and relating to ourselves. Do not let the apparent joy of others disturb your joy, or dictate what it should look like.

In a nutshell, college is weird. Those three words sum it up better than any selfhelp book your aunt will give you for your birthday. It has ups and downs, just like everything else. Studying in the library until 2 a.m. sounds like a rite of passage— but in actuality, it just sucks.

There might be tears, and there might be feelings of complete hopelessness that aren’t remotely post-worthy. And that, too, is okay. Remembering that every bit of your journey is uniquely your own will assist you immensely when feeling like things aren’t going as they “should.”

Strike that word from your vocabulary, hold on for the ride, and experience four— or maybe more—years of tremendous growth and excitement that can’t occur anywhere else.

D2L will be your best friend next semester is an anti-plagarism submission service where the majority of papers, projects and assignments are submitted. The trick is watching for the verification email sent to your CatMail account after you’ve submitted something. The email is how you know an assignment has been submitted successfully.

An incoming freshman would be mistaken to believe the heart and soul of learning curriculum at the UA lies inside its classrooms. In reality, the school’s heart beats inside two web-based programs: UAccess and D2L. The university’s all-in-one submission service, grade book, calendar and syllabus repository, D2L is something a Wildcat will become intimately familiar with.

While colleges like the Eller College of Management use their own proprietary programs, nearly every other student will have to deal with this program.

Pay attention to quiz limits.

Depending on the quiz and the professor, a quiz can be taken once or sometimes as many times as your heart desires. Professors can also set time limits for how long a particular quiz is open from the time you start. Time frames can be limited to only minutes or be as long as a multi-hour slog.

Here are some tips on how to master D2L:

Write down your password—save it forever. D2L requires a user to create a pretty lengthy NetID password with a minimum mixture of 10 characters, numbers, symbols and capitalized letters. With a password so long and resembling a code used to get in to a cryptex, it’s not something you want to forget.

The heart and soul of UA’s academic web presence, UAccess is the web-based mothership of the UA. Housing financial aid information, your bursar’s account, class schedule and the program that allows you to browse, enroll and drop classes, UAccess is the one-stop student services shop.

Browse the course list, find some sweet gen-eds. UAccess is where you go to enroll in new classes and change your schedule. There are different tabs of the website to enroll, search, and browse your academic standing. For example, if needing to change your schedule, you would click enroll and type in the specific name of classes you want to look for.

Pay attention to your bursar’s account balance. This tool is conveniently located in the upper center of the page in large reg numbers. If there are numbers there—particularly lengthy ones—pay them. UAccess has a place for parents and students to pay off this balance, which often includes tuition.

Utilize the course booklist function. UAccess conveniently links up with the UA Bookstore and auto-populates a booklist with all the required textbooks for your respective class schedule.

Print this list out before taking your first trip to the inevitably overcrowded basement of the bookstore.

Pressing the wrong button while using UAccess is the final nail in the coffin of searching for classes. So much time is spent going back and forth between search pages and the course descriptions for individual classes. If you make the mistake of clicking the back arrow instead of the “return to search” button, you are given an error message and have to start your search again.

The frustration caused by this, and the webpages that can sometimes take several minutes to load, is best relieved by banging your head against a wall, screaming into your pillow, or some combination of the two.

If you do manage to find the perfect lecture section after hours of searching, registration will be impossible. So few seats are available during each registration period that the only discussion time that works with your schedule will always be full. Even if the lecture is not full, a dreaded Shibboleth error will rip everything you worked for away from you.

Making a good schedule is entirely possible, but it requires incredible patience and a large amount of time spent searching for the right class with the right professor. There is no winning with UAccess. That is a cold, hard truth that every UA student has to cope with.

The best advice I can offer is to allow yourself time, plan ahead and visit your advisers often to make sure you complete every requirement.

Inside scoop: What a science major entails unique blend of hard science courses, practical skills and specialization. While we take core courses like chemistry and biology, over the course of four years students also learn how to texture soils, process natural resource data, write technically and conduct environmental risk assessments. On top of this well-rounded base, each student specializes in a focus area—whether that be biology, soils, climate, hydrology, biochemistry, or environmental law and policy. I chose environmental science because I wanted to have a strong foundation in environmental mechanics and pick up some technical skills along the way— not to mention that [the] UA’s environmental faculties are some of the best in the world. I’m focusing my studies on marine science and after graduation I want to work in the realm of global food security before going on to graduate school.”

Alison Comrie, science reporter — senior studying neuroscience and cognitive science “The neuroscience and cognitive science major combines both brain chemistry and biology with psychological studies. I chose it because I was interested in brain research and had heard good things about the small, new NSCS program. I am still in the NSCS major not just because of our great professors and the content, but because of the sense of community within the major. I plan to attend graduate school to pursue a Ph.D. in neuroscience.”

Natalie Robbins, science reporter — environmental science senior “I chose environmental science when I was first applying to college because it was something I have always been interested in.

When I got to [the] UA, I fell in love with the program—the professors are passionate, and it is great to be in a major where my peers are interested and excited about the same things as me. After school, I am hoping to work in environmental consulting and perform field work or permitting for projects that require environmental impact studies.”

It’s possible to study anything with a geoscience degree, from dinosaurs to Mars, and as for careers, you could become anything from a geoarchaeologist to an astronaut.”

I love that math is challenging in a way that other subjects are not. It requires analytical skills beyond pure memorization of facts. Your guide to fraternity rush

Rushing a fraternity or sorority could be the first experience on the UA campus for many incoming freshman and new students.

Male and female students flock to campus a week before school, hopeful to earn a bid to a house.

For women hoping to join a sorority, the week is loaded with walking, visiting different houses and speaking with numerous sorority members. For men, there are many events to attend to determine if the house is a fit, including basketball games, dodgeball, and poker nights.

With family legacies and connections with old friends at stake, here are the do’s and don’ts.

Fraternity rush Jake Flaherty, a current member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and an undergraduate in the Eller College of Management, explained what’s important to remember during fraternity rush week.

Do: Be yourself: Fraternities want to see who you really are so they know whether you’re a fit in their house.

Don’t try to act like someone you are not.

Be a gentleman: Give members of the house firm handshakes and make eye contact. Ask questions and take an interest in the chapter and the people taking time to talk to you.

Be open minded: Give every fraternity you encounter a chance.

You never know which house will fit you best best until you are immersed in its culture.

Be honest: Don’t be afraid to tell your story. The active members you speak to want to get to know you. However, it is important not to brag or exaggerate your facts.

Fraternities will do their research, don’t get caught red handed.

Don’t: Dress ridiculously: Yes, sometimes fraternity members wear interesting and unique outfits,

but don’t try to fit the stereotypical “frat outfit.” Sure, you might have a favorite visor or favorite pair of cargo pants at home, but if you stand out with your clothing, that isn’t a good thing. Nice shorts and a collared shirt will do just fine.

Be late: Timeliness is important.

Showing up late or even overstaying your welcome at a house is considered disrespectful.

Bad mouth: Sure, you might have had a bad experience at a house, but don’t talk trash to other people. Believe it or not, word will spread. No fraternity wants a member who will slander other people or houses.

Stress: Rush should be an enjoyable experience where you will meet a lot of different people.

Put yourself out there, meet as many people as possible and act respectfully, it’ll all work out.

Do: Meet people: You have the opportunity to interact and meet with so many different people, get yourself out there.

Explore: Give every house a shot. You have the opportunity to see what house will fit you. Look around and engage with each house you visit.

Remember: This is your home away from home for your college career.

Don’t: Dress to impress: This is your opportunity to make a new home here on campus. Don’t try to be something you’re not just because one house has a high ranking.

Wear jeans: It will be one hundred degrees outside. Make sure you are comfortable, you don’t want to pass out.

Wear too much makeup: Be yourself during rush, plus you might sweat it all off in the Arizona sun.

The freshman 15 has its own Wikipedia entry, which—although it claims to be arbitrarily set and is probably just named for its alliterative qualities—is still indicative of weight put on when you are set free into the magical world of the meal plan.

The UA does not have a cafeteria-style student union, but rather a selection of popular fast food chains and separate similarly student-centered fast casual dining options in its Student Union Memorial Center.

The Arizona Student Unions website does not yet have its nutritional information page filled out, but promises to exist at some point in the near future.

An attempt to make up for this, perhaps, are the “Smart Moves.”

Smart Moves items are designated so students earn at least one point on the Smart Moves scale—which weighs positive and negative attributes against

each other to add or subtract “points” from each item—when they choose Smart Moves.

Some of the positive attributes include minimally processed foods, those containing health-promoting fats and even foods with concern for the environment.

Negative attributes include refined grains, saturated fat levels when greater than 10 percent of calories come from saturated fat and excessive sodium content, which would be greater than 500 milligrams.

You can check out the website for more in-depth breakdowns of the attributes, and to find examples of the items on special student union restaurants marked as Smart Moves.

At the Cellar Bistro, Smart Moves include lettuce wrap burgers, salmon entrees and BBQ and blackened chicken.

The Core and Core+ outlets at the main and Park Student Unions provide many smarter options with dozens of colorful vegetables for chosing.

The UA is constantly investing more

into providing resources for students with a sincere desire to be healthy, as well as those with various food allergies or dietary restrictions. Some of the best advice is to explore with your friends and to keep an eye out for help provided on menus along the way.

Panda Express, a chain that for a few years now has made its calorie counts visible in restaurants and indicates “wok smart” food items that include lower calorie options.

Otherwise, a bowl of Beijing Beef (470 calories) with Chow Mein (510) can have you at about 1000 calories, with a bowl of Orange Chicken (380) and Fried Rice (520) not far behind.

Nearby is another favorite, Chick-fil-A, where a plain, classic chicken sandwich comes out to 440 calories. An eight-count of nuggets is 270, 12-count is 400 and small to large fry orders span 310 to 520 calories.

At Papa John’s Pizza, each cheese slice of an extra large pizza will give you 300 calories, sausage slices at 350, pepperoni slices at 340 and specialty slices around

400 calories. Two garlic Parmesan bread sticks add a total of 340 calories.

A popular breakfast and mid-day snack spot is Einstein Bros. Bagels, where a plain or whole wheat bagel is 260 calories, an everything bagel is 280, Asiago cheese is 300 and a cinnamon sugar bagel is the highest calorie count at 320.

All of the Shmears are 150 calories or less per serving, with many of the options being reduced fat. The rest of the menu includes breakfast and other sandwiches, some of which can be around 700 calories, with items like bacon and cheese always piling on.

It can be hard to make the right choice when there are so many items to choose from, and so many tasty recommended foods that you want to try—especially at other restaurants that are unique to the UA. Common sense is oftentimes all you need, however, when it comes to making calorie-conscious cuisine decisions.

Guide to Gameday: Do UA sports the right way

ildcat fans and the city of Tucson better be ready because game day will be here in less than four months. Arizona will take on Grambling State at Arizona Stadium on Sept. 10, which will most certainly feature some high-powered football. In order to maximize your full game day potential, here are some of the biggest tips to ensure you have a memorable experience.

Purchase your ZonaZoo pass If you are thinking about attending any sporting event the UA has to offer, this is definitely the way to go.

You can purchase a “Red” ZonaZoo pass for $175 or a “Blue” pass for $135.

If you are thinking about attending even one men’s basketball game, the Red pass is for you.

The pass offers access to every single Arizona Athletics sporting event, so you can cross attending different sports off your college bucket list.

Want to see top-25 baseball, softball, gymnastics, women’s golf, men’s basketball, football, volleyball and soccer programs? It’s all possible with a Red pass.

Before the game Want front row seats to a men’s

basketball game against a Pac-12 Conference opponent? You might be waiting a while.

While you are guaranteed a seat if you make a reservation, where you sit is entirely up to you.

Many of the individuals who sit in the front row of the ZonaZoo will wait approximately seven to nine hours outside of McKale Center, depending on the opponent. If you are coming from class and make a mad dash 30 minutes before game time, enjoy sitting up in the high seats.

If you are thinking about attending the football games and want some quality seats, at least one hour should suffice.

Sunscreen & Water Tucson is hot, like, really hot. Many out-of-state students struggle with not drinking water and keeping on sunscreen.

To give you a hint, the average high temperature in September is around 94 degrees.

Lather up with sunscreen, ZonaZoo, or I promise your skin will get burnt in those few rough day games at Arizona Stadium.

Don’t say you weren’t warned.

Stay the entire game This one is tough to do. It will be hot and you will be exhausted, but you should still stay all four quarters for Arizona football.

Vice President of Arizona Athletics Greg Byrne wants it to happen, Rodriguez wants it to happen, the ZonaZoo wants it to happen, so I would suggest following suit.

Just ask those students from 2014 about “The Hill Mary” against California.

Or you could ask students at last year’s Senior Night game against Utah, when the Wildcats defeated the No. 10 Utes in double overtime before ZonaZoo rushed the field.

Take-home point: Stay the entire game.

Tailgating Arizona tailgating has a strict policy for first come, first served. If you are lucky enough to have local family members or friends tailgating on the UA Mall, take advantage.

For most students, the ZonaZoo tailgate will definitely be the way to go.

Get to know these coaches before the season

Sean Miller — Men’s basketball The head honcho himself, Sean Miller is probably the most popular man on campus every year. The success he has brought Arizona in the post-Lute Olson years has been stellar.

In seven seasons at the helm, Miller has taken the Wildcats to three Elite Eights and amassed a 49-game home winning streak over two and a half years that kept fans fully entertained.

He has coached and produced NBA players Derrick Williams, Aaron Gordon, Stanley Johnson and Rondae HollisJefferson. With four five-star recruits set to step onto the court in the fall, Miller’s reign as king of Tucson isn’t going to slow down anytime soon.

Rich Rodriguez — Football Rich Rod has been the Wildcats’ head coach for four years now, and he’s given

Athletics play a large part in the culture and society that is the UA. While each sport maintains a competitive track record year in and out, here’s a look at five coaches that all new students should get to know once they step onto campus the program one of the most successful runs in school history.

Two years ago, the Wildcats won the Pac-12 South title, while having the opportunity to play Boise State in the Vizio Fiesta Bowl.

Rodriguez has led the Wildcats to top10 upset victories each year in Tucson, including one over No. 9 USC in 2012, No. 5 Oregon in 2013, at No. 2 Oregon in 2014, and No. 10 Utah in 2015.

He is bringing in one of the best recruiting classes the UA has ever seen for the upcoming year and looks to continue coaching this team to success.

Jay Johnson — Baseball Johnson took over last year as the skipper for Arizona’s baseball team and has compiled an impressive record in his first season. The Wildcats won 30 games in his first year since he replaced former

head coach Andy Lopez.

Johnson was an assistant at the University of San Diego from 2006-2013, where he coached future MLB All-Star Kris Bryant of the Chicago Cubs. Johnson was then head of the Nevada Wolfpack for two years, where he compiled a 72-42 record before coming to Tucson.

Like Miller, Johnson is picking up right where his legendary predecessor left off.

Mike Candrea — Softball Candrea has been the head coach of the Wildcats for 31 years and has found an impressive stretch of success in his time as a Wildcat.

He has over 1,400 career victories at the UA, making him the winningest Division I coach in the nation, while also leading the Wildcats to eight national titles.

He was the head coach of Team USA in 2004 when the team won gold in the

Olympics and he has coached 54 AllAmericans. Candrea is arguably the most successful coach in Arizona history.

Dave Rubio — Volleyball In 24 years, Rubio has transformed Arizona volleyball into one of the most consistent faces in the NCAA Tournament.

Rubio has led the Wildcats to 17 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, while also taking them to a Final Four and four Elite Eights. He led the Wildcats to a 19-14 finish this past season and another NCAA Tournament berth.

He returns two-time All-Pac-12 player Penina Snuka, so look for the Wildcats to be another solid force in the nation come next season.

Wildcat players who will bring the spotlight to Arizona in 2016-2017 Paul Magloire Jr.

Katiyana Mauga

Mauga will return for her senior season with Arizona softball and is arguably the most decorated player Mike Candrea has had. Mauga was the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, already 14th in home runs in Arizona history before her junior season, and was named to the ESPN Preseason All-American team.

Mauga is an outfielder, but has mastered the craft of hitting dingers. She has a 5-foot-2 frame, but don’t let that fool you for the power she contains when she stands in the batters box.

Heading into the final weekend of Pac-12 play, Mauga was tied for ninth in the country with 18 home runs, and that number has a great possibility of exceeding new heights for the upcoming season.

The football season will be a mystery until Arizona’s first game of the season against BYU at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, on Sept. 3.

The concerns swarm on the defensive side of the ball with the NFL departures of Scooby Wright III and Will Parks.

Hybrids between linebackers and safeties are the hottest trend right now and after collecting 72 tackles last season, senior Paul Magloire Jr. will look to pick up where he left off and conduct a final resume for the 2017 NFL Draft.

Bleacher Report ranks Magloire as the best NFL prospect coming out of Arizona for the draft. He has the body of a linebacker with the feet and agility of a defensive back, so the physical specimen will turn heads on the gridiron in the Pac-12 Conference.

The sand volleyball program at Arizona is still in its infancy, but thanks to the Witt twins, the bar for Arizona is set very high for years to come.

The senior sisters were named to the 2016 AVCA All-American team and held a 26-4 (8-0 at home) record while going undefeated in 17 matchups.

The pair also went 8-3 against top-10 opponents.

The Witt twins were named to the Pac-12 All-Conference team and carried the Wildcats to a No. 6 ranking.

The sisters return for their final year in Tucson looking to not only earn Arizona’s first conference championship, but the school’s first national title.

Allonzo Trier

It’s no question the Wildcats didn’t perform to the expectations of a blueblood program last season and with high hopes to get into the NBA, guard Allonzo Trier will return for his sophomore campaign with some unfinished business.

Trier was the Wildcats’ leading scorer averaging 14.8 points per game last season, but broke his hand early in Pac-12 play, causing him to miss a month of action. He returned with a vengeance, scoring in double-figures in all but two matchups the rest of the season.

With arguably the program’s best recruiting class coming in, Trier will be the ringleader and a veteran that Sean Miller will lean on in late-game situations.

Jordan Gumberg

The Arizona men’s golf program has been in shambles recently, but young star Jordan Gumberg provides a ray of sunshine for head coach Jim Anderson moving forward.

Gumberg rose to the top when George Cunningham dealt with injuries, and captured the Wyoming Cowboy Classic to become the first Wildcat to win a tournament since Tarquin MacManus in 2011.

He also finished in second place at the Pac-12 Tournament and earned Pac-12 Honorable Mention.

Anderson’s right-hand man for the 2016 season will likely ramp up his leadership for the upcoming year and assist the program back to the Pac-12 spotlight.

Make the memories count Don’t forget about the awesome memories you make in college, such as those you have tailgating and celebrating with your friends and the memories you have siting outside McKale Center for hours to just watch a 40-minute basketball game.

Never Give Up It may seem impossible with the workload and pressure you feel having to manage time, have fun, be nice to people and get good grades. It’s manageable.

Never give up on the goals you set for yourself because it is worth it to know you tried your hardest for that “A,” or even for that “C-”; whatever your preference.

Stay the whole game What? I didn’t know that was possible. Yes, it is possible to stay the whole game. Remember that night when Arizona suddenly came back to defeat California on a Hail Mary pass? By the time the fourth quarter rolled around, almost all of ZonaZoo had left. If you stay the whole game, who knows what memories you’ll walk away with.

Tailgate just for the fun of it The on-campus football tailgates are a ball. Get to know someone who tailgates consistently and join in on the celebration. Even if you aren’t a huge football fan, it’s always great to see the Tucson community get involved with Arizona sports.

Football season goes by fast and you’d think there would be enough tailgates to attend until you are a fifth-year senior and barely been to a game. So go.

On the first floor of the UA Bookstore, you will find a beautiful area filled with MacBooks and all sorts of other electronic devices. You will find that these are some of the best things to bursar. Oh, your parents just bought you a new laptop before you came to school? So? Who cares? Buy another one, then sell the first one if you can. The golden rule of the account? What your parents don’t know won’t hurt them.

You may hear things like, “you should really only use a bursar’s account to buy textbooks and necessary supplies,” or, “if you buy a new computer with that, I swear I will stop paying for you to go here.”

But come on, if we really should not bursar laptops, then why on earth did the bookstore place the electronics section right next to the textbooks? Honestly, what will most likely intrigue a college freshman? A brand new MacBook Air, or some terrible history textbook more dry than the desert outside?

TVs, gaming consoles and video games Students in college will soon learn that nobody around here actually studies. So, why not buy a new Xbox and a few games with that glorious $1,000 you now have at your disposal?

Better yet, buy a brand new television. You’ll become the coolest kid in your dorm in no time. Besides, college should also help you make friends, right?

Sunglasses Like you’ll soon learn, a freshman will

It saddens the soul to see a student walking out of the bookstore during the first week of school carrying none of these items.

And unfortunately, many fail to utilize their account, saying they “don’t need all this extra crap” or they “don’t want to waste their parents’ money.”

Like I said before, UAccess does not lay out every specific purchase made with the bursar’s account, so explaining it to the parents should be super easy.

“I don’t know mom and dad, my textbooks just cost a lot this semester,” Timmy says as he surfs the Internet on his brand new Mac. “Must be my philosophy class. The book is just so big.”

They will start to believe you, then you simply say “bye mom and dad, gotta go study.

I mean, I really appreciate you guys buying me these books, wouldn’t want to waste them,” then hang up the phone.

Your parents will be so happy you already began studying that they will forget about your supposedly $700 philosophy textbook.

Do not ever listen to those ranting that you should only use bursar’s for textbooks and school supplies. As students, we have $1,000 of free money on our hands. Let’s make sure not to waste it.

Bursar’s account offer’s flexibility, not free money

New college students become astounded by the amount of freedom suddenly thrust upon them. To use this freedom wisely and productively, students must ensure they have the books and supplies to start college off on the right foot. Luckily, the UA gives you just the right tool to do so: the bursar’s account.

Students will soon discover the UA Bookstore is a wonderful place, perfect for purchasing everything they might need for college. It also provides an incredibly useful tool for making these purchases that make students’ lives about a million times easier.

The UA calls this important tool the bursar’s account, and it essentially serves as a way for students to make purchases at the bookstore, while charging these purchases to their online UAccess account. Each student can spend up to $1,000 per semester via this account at the bookstore. Students (or parents) are still responsible for the bill when it comes due.

So, the question arises of what exactly an incoming freshman should purchase with their bursar’s.

All the books you will need for your classes can be found at the bookstore. From traditional books to lab manuals to online access codes, bursar’s and the bookstore have you covered.

Supplies Make sure to also stock up on school supplies before the semester grind hits. True, you’ve made it past grade school to college, but school supplies will still prove important for many classes at the UA. Make sure to find a UA notebook with a cool wildcat design and a pen or pencil that you can comfortably write with. You will have to take plenty of notes, and if you hate your pen, you will probably hate yourself too once that first exam comes around and you realize you didn’t take enough notes.

Only get what you deem absolutely necessary. We wouldn’t want anyone to abuse their bursar’s privilege.

Calculators An appropriate calculator becomes an absolute must if you plan on taking a

math class in the upcoming semester. The bookstore has great options perfect for just about any math class at the UA. Whether you think of yourself as a Texas Instruments user or consider yourself more of a Casio person, you’ll definitely find what you need.

Lab supplies This one really only applies to science majors or anyone taking a laboratory science course, but if you do belong in this group, make sure to grab a lab coat, goggles and gloves before they run out of your size. You wouldn’t want to cause a chemical spillage just because your lab coat sleeve hangs down so low it almost touches the floor.

Gifts and paraphernalia Definitely don’t go overboard with this one, but as long as your required textbooks and necessary supplies don’t break the bank, feel free to get a little something for mom and dad just to show how much you appreciate them helping you to get where you are.

The bookstore has plenty of UA insignia products, such as clothing, water bottles, mugs and jewelry.

Make sure this gift only shows your appreciation though, rather than overcharging your bursar’s account.

Over 6,000 students will move to the UA and call the residence halls home in the fall. For many of them, this might be the first time living away from home or having a roommate.

From Apache-Santa Cruz Residence Hall to Yuma Residence Hall, each of the 23 dorms has a different personality, like the all-female Maricopa Residence Hall or Navajo-Pinal Residence Hall, which is located inside Arizona Stadium.

Resident assistants, or RAs, in each hall help students transition from high school to college, and work to build a community within their hall. Here are a few tips from

RAs around campus to help you have an enjoyable freshman year.

Christina Harris, a public health sophomore, will begin her first year as an RA in Árbol de la Vida Residence Hall next semester. She lived in Árbol de la Vida as a freshman and is excited to return.

“Always leave your door open during the first few weeks so you can get to know people,” said Harris, who added that she can’t wait to get to know her residents.

Residence halls oftentimes have welcome events at the beginning of the year for new residents to meet each other.

These events usually involve games and free food. It’s a great way to meet people in your dorm—people who might become your best friends.

Idrian Mollaneda, a political science junior, agreed with Harris.

“Go to a lot of the welcome events,” he said. “That’s how you meet friends. Go to your hall events too.”

Mollaneda, was an RA in Yuma this year and will be an RA in Árbol de la Vida in the fall.

Samantha Merchant, a nursing sophomore, will return for her second year as an RA in Yuma this fall. She advised freshmen to make the most of their first year at the UA. “Time goes by really fast, so take advantage of every opportunity,” Merchant said. “College is going to be over before you know it, so get involved now.”

Clubs and organizations look for new

members around the start of the school year. During the Club Fair, many clubs set up booths on the UA Mall to talk to anyone interested in joining. Most majors also have groups or professional organizations open to students.

College can be really fun, and it’s a great opportunity to meet all kinds of new people and go on crazy adventures. One example of this is the mysterious unicorn statue on campus.

“There’s a secret unicorn statue on campus,” Merchant said. “It’s your quest to find it.”
