What do you look forward to about moving to Tucson?

I think the people are terrific there … I’m from El Paso [Texas] so I know the Spanish Southwest very well and it’s very attractive to me and … It’s a great part of the country.

What do you look forward to at the University of Arizona?

It’s always exciting to start at a new institution with a leadership position. I’m looking forward to getting to know the faculty and the leadership much better … further identify where our strengths are and really work with everyone so that we can move our university forward.

Are you nervous about leading two medical schools, in Tucson and Phoenix?

I’ve been at other state institutions that have had regional campuses. I think for the University of Arizona, it is unique, the fact that you have separate colleges of medicine both in Phoenix and in Tucson. But given that those are the two largest cities in Arizona it’s an opportunity, I think, of training outstanding students for careers in medicine and also to increase the number of academically-oriented trainees and students that perhaps will stay in Arizona and help address many of the problems within the state with regard to medically underserved patients. So I think it’s an opportunity and obviously the College of Medicine in Phoenix is much newer and has a lot of growth before it but these are opportunities that, I think, will be exciting to develop over the next few years.

you think you can help improve?

I think that there are strengths across the board in … particularly cancer-related research is very strong there. Increasing our capacities in population health I think will be important.

There’s a strong push and a lot of interest and expertise in genetics and translational research that I think will be important for us … moving forward. I think our research programs maybe need some additional support in the infrastructure there. It’d be nice to expand our depths in specific areas around comparative research and translational research and in genetics and genomics and informatics. I think those are important areas in every institution and I think they’ll be important areas as well for us in Arizona.

Affirmative action needs to UA provides unique research experiences adapt with changing times casey knox Arizona Summer Wildcat

L

and of the free and home of the brave, America is a country where all citizens are able to thrive with opportunities. It is a country that is constantly battling for equality in homes, schools and the workplace. Among measures taken to improve this equality is affirmative action.

Affirmative action was a program originally favored as a means to diversify America’s workforce by creating fairness in employment opportunities for minorities.

But, it was soon realized that affirmative action would fail to diversify the workforce unless it was applied to those working in higher education, the place where the leaders of our workforce are taught.

In 2012, a white student was denied admission into the University of Texas. She claimed that affirmative action policies upheld by the university discriminated against her race. Taking the case all the way to the Supreme Court, on June 24, the court sent its recent ruling on Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin back to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

In the 13-page opinion for the 7-1 majority, Justice Anthony Kennedy said the [United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit] “must do a better job of determining that the university needs to rely on race in admissions to achieve greater diversity, including why it wants to admit more minorities in the first place,” according to the New York Times editorial board.

Assuming that this case may be just the beginning of the end of racial preferences in college admissions, many liberals are considering substitutes to the prior measures, in the form of class-based affirmative action.

The idea is simple: leveling the playing field for economically disadvantaged college applicants will maintain a diversified student body, as there is a connection between minorities and poor economic class.

This connection can be backed by data found in a 2009 spreadsheet from The Urban Institute, which said, “Four million low-income families (or 30 percent of the total) are Hispanic, 2.9 million (22 percent) are black or African American, and about 800,000 (6 percent) are other nonwhites.”

If a future Supreme Court ruling classifies race-based affirmative action as a discriminatory measure in college admissions, class-based affirmative action is a fair substitution to consider.

Instead of trying to patch up years of hatred and discrimination, class-based affirmative action looks at

the broader picture, recognizing its policies as a means of moving forward, while simultaneously addressing economic and social problems.

Opponents of class-based policies worry that this substitution is operating under the assumption that all poor people are minorities, thus reinforcing unwanted stereotypes. To the contrary, studies show that substituting class-based policies achieves nearly the same amount of diversity in a student body as traditional policies. This alone demonstrates a common relationship between minorities and poor economic standing.

According to an article found on MotherJones.com, studies show that admissions based on class-based affirmative action result in a student body composed of 10 percent black and Latino students. This is compared to the slightly higher percentage that is achieved when admissions consider race-based affirmative action.

One of the many drives of affirmative action is to increase the diversity of a student body. These statistics are a testimony to the fact that class-based affirmative action admission policies are nearly as effective in creating this diversity as race-based policies.

Despite the minor loss in diversity levels when classbased policies are in effect, there are still many reasons to consider class-based affirmative action as a suitable alternative to its contender.

In regards to performance levels in the classroom, research shows that students who face economic obstacles are at a greater disadvantage than those facing purely race-based obstacles.

This alone is a reason to consider leveling the playing field in college admissions in regards to affirmative action based on economic standing. As well as there being a significant relationship between class-based affirmative action programs and graduation rates.

Research shows that higher graduation rates are achieved when class-based affirmative action policies are in effect, as opposed to the prior race-based policies, according to an article found on MotherJones. com.

In his 1965 speech, President Lyndon Johnson laid the foundation of affirmative action programs. Nearly half a century later, it appears that Johnson’s statements can still be adopted by class-based policies as affirmative action is not being completely eliminated, rather, it is adapting to our changing society.

In implementing class-based policies, a person’s race is not being ignored, but recognized as a way to build equality in America and that is why class-based affirmative action appears to be the next best thing.

S

ummer vacation for college students can be a lazy time.

After eight or so months of time consumed by studying and rigorous class schedules during the school year, many relish in taking a few months off to relax and enjoy the calm of a well-deserved break.

Ranging from the sciences to the arts, the UA offers its undergraduates a place to work alongside research professors, grad students and postdocs. Much of the research that is conducted is original. This gives students the chance to delve into areas that may not have yet been fully studied, while also attaching their names to papers published in academic journals.

One such opportunity is the Undergraduate Research Grant Program supported by the honors college in partnership with the Office of the Senior Vice President for Research. This summer 22 undergraduates have been selected to participated.

First established in 1987, the program enables students to design and conduct their own research projects. Students present their findings each spring at the Undergraduate Research Expo held at the Student Union Memorial Center.

This research opportunity is open to all undergraduates at UA, not just honors students, and can be done in any field.

“Discovery is at the heart of the mission of the University of Arizona and its Honors College,” said Patricia MacCorquodale, dean of the Honors College.

Past projects ranged from analyzing hundreds of JavaScript files to see if they were malicious and how they affect the everyday user, to examining how artists transition from one medium of art to another throughout their careers.

“Through the Undergraduate Research Grant Program, students are able to reach far beyond the traditional classroom setting and participate in experiential learning through hands-on research,” said MacCorquodale who noted that many projects result in publications, conference presentations, job offers and fellowships to graduate school.

The vast potential that this program offers allows students to be creative in discovering more than just traditional learning methods.

They represent a diverse array of departments including American Indian studies, photography, psychology, neuroscience and anthropology, among others.

Students submitted their grant proposals last spring and upon being named recipients of the undergraduate research grant, each received a stipend of up to $1,500 to conduct their original research proposals this summer. Students select a faculty mentor to help guide and develop their projects.

Recent ratings released by the U.S. News & World Report indicate that the UA is not only a quality research university, but it’s getting better every year. The article also pointed out more good news for the UA as, “a leader in undergraduate research and creative projects in the ‘Programs to Look For’ section, which highlights schools with outstanding programs in eight areas identified by education experts as keys to student success.”

The Undergraduate Research Grant program encompasses all aspects of what a research project should include, with collaboration between students and faculty and innovative research.

While many college students’ research over the break probably entailed the effects of hot dogs and Bud Light on the nervous system, others capitalized on the opportunity to engage in an experience that goes beyond the confinements of a classroom. ­— Brian Peel is a senior studying history. During the past month, all streets along the streetcar route have been open to traffic with lane restrictions. By the end of July, lane restrictions will be on a much smaller scale and will be during work hours only.

“It’s something that as soon as the work day is over then the restrictions get pulled back and we’re back up to minimum of two lanes of traffic downtown on both Congress and Broadway,” Chase said.

The restrictions will be for finishing touches, such as the overhead lines and poles, as well as the signal system and some final finishes to the canopy shelter streetcar stops, De Leon said.

With just a few months left until the streetcar installation project is complete, the city has also started to post job openings for drivers to begin training and for mechanics to help maintain the vehicles.

“We’re very happy, I think, to get to this point,” De Leon said. “It’s a major milestone for us and we’re looking forward to doing the next phase and then getting the streetcar service up and Ryan revock/Arizona summer Wildcat running.”

A UA student was cited and released for driving under the influence on July 1, after a University of Arizona Police Department officer noticed a vehicle weaving while driving down Speedway Boulevard at approximately 2:42 a.m.

After pulling the vehicle over, the officer immediately noticed the smell of alcohol coming from the driver, as well as watery, red, bloodshot eyes. The driver also had a female passenger.

When the officer asked the driver for his license, registration and insurance card, the driver said he left it at his house in Phoenix, though he kept looking for it.

After failing several sobriety tests, including a walk and turn and one leg stand, the driver was placed under arrest and read his Miranda rights. He consented to questioning, and stated he drank three Keystone beers, though he was cited for an extreme DUI. His passenger, also a UA student, was cited for an MIP and walked home.

Customers who do not have cash can go to an information booth located at the market with a credit or debit card, and purchase market tokens in $5 increments, according to Kammerer. These tokens never expire, and are accepted by every vendor.

This system provides more selling power to vendors who cannot take cards, as well as more buying power for customers who don’t carry cash, he said.

“We hope to pull more vendors from the community, to provide more of a diverse items from not only fruits and vegetables but other things,” Ciarniello said. “We have people that are bringing olive oil, we have people that are bringing locally roasted coffee, so what we hope to happen is for it to just keep growing with variety.”

Just recently, the market has also grown to not only include customers from the College of Medicine and UAMC, but the greater campus community, Ciarniello added.

“I think it’s really cool,” said Ellie Hutchison, a second year medical student.

“I hope this continues … it’s great that not only is it convenient, but you know, it’s good food, good produce.”

According to Kammerer and Ciarniello, the market is scheduled to continue throughout July and August. Plans are also in the works to continue into the academic year.

ucson may be experiencing record heat, but suddenly Arizona football is cool.

Last week four-star defensive back Naijiel Hale — son of the late rapper Nate Dogg — chose the UA during a nationally televised event for top recruits called “The Opening” at Nike headquarters.

Hale’s commitment made for some creative headlines and story angles, as well as some nostalgia for classic rap fans. He’s also the second son of someone famous to enter Rich Rodriguez’s program, the first being Trey Griffey, son of former MLB superstar Ken Griffey Jr. Ultimately, it’s the addition of his talent that makes Hale’s commitment most noteworthy. And at the moment, it has the UA atop the Pac-12 recruiting race.

Whether it is Arizona’s surprising 2012 season, the impending opening of the Lowell-Stevens Football Facility or its flashy new uniforms, Arizona has shot up the recruiting charts.

In its latest class of 2014 rankings, Scout. com has Arizona (28th overall) just ahead of Stanford and USC. 247sports.com also has the UA first in the Pac-12, but swaps USC for Stanford.

Arizona has the most commitments in the Pac-12 and Cal is second with nine.

Of the 12 UA commits, three are four-star players and five are three-stars, according to Scout.com.

Of course stars are mostly meaningless.

Just look at the hardwood where UA recruits Josiah Turner, Jamelle Horne and Grant Jerrett were all five-stars but had lackluster careers at best.

The same can be said in football.

Ka’Deem Carey, the nation’s leading rusher as a true sophomore, and Jake Fischer, who is on the watch list for best defensive player in the country, were only three-stars as

Arizona incoming freshman forward Aaron Gordon was named most valuable player for the undefeated FIBA U19 World Champion Team USA. The United States beat Serbia 82-68 in the gold medal game in the tournament in Prague.

In a post game interview, Gordon said to USA Basketball that the win was “extremely satisfying” and that he couldn’t imagine getting anything besides gold.

“We actually had to put a lot of effort into it,” Gordon said. “But with a team with so much talent and a coaching staff with so much knowledge, it was actually hard to lose.”

Gordon led the Stars and Stripes in scoring (12.6 per game) and rebounding (6.2 per game) to earn the MVP honor. He also had two steals a game and shot 61.2 percent from the field.

“I was surprised when I was named alltournament and once I got all-tournament I though ‘Hey, maybe I can get MVP too, here,’”

Gordon said. “Then they said my name, I really didn’t even hear them say my name at first, I had to ask my teammates. But I’m very honored.”

The U.S. went 9-0 en route to America’s third world championship in the last eight U19 FIBA tournaments. The USA is now world champion in all men’s and women’s age groups in basketball.

In Prague, the Americans won every game by at least nine points and had an average margin of victory of 39.6 points.

“Aaron and Oak [Jahlil Okafor] played really, really well, as did Nigel [WilliamsGoss], as did Justise [Winslow],” USA head coach Billy Donovan said in a press release.

“Those young guys played really well but I think a lot of that had to do with them having really good leadership around them and I give the older guys a lot of credit for one, sacrificing, and letting those guys flourish the way they did.”

Former Wildcat Whyte faces new challenge in WNBA DEREK EVANS Arizona Summer Wildcat

As a senior for the Arizona women’s basketball team, point guard Davellyn Whyte was all over the court. Opponents focused their entire defense on stopping her, yet she still led Arizona in four major categories.

Now as a rookie in the WNBA, Whyte faces a new challenge she never went through at Arizona: fighting for playing time.

“It is hard work, all the people here are veterans and they’re great players,” Whyte said.

“I’m not too much worried about playing time and at the same time I’m at this level, what coach asks me to do, I do.”

Through 11 games, Whyte has only played a total of 154 minutes (14.0 mpg). The reduced role has Whyte averaging 4.7 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game, a far cry from the 16.3 points she averaged during her Arizona career.

It hasn’t been an ideal start to Whyte’s professional career, especially with her San Antonio Silver Stars stuck near the bottom of the standings. But for the highest drafted Wildcat in women’s basketball history (16th overall), Whyte said she still remains positive about her situation.

While Whyte lead Arizona with 16.8 points, 5.2 assists, 6.3 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game, the Wildcats still finished at a measly 12-18.

Whyte ended up with 2,059 points in her career for second of all-time. She was also second in career steals and made the third most field goals.

What helped Whyte be so successful throughout her time at Arizona was her consistency.

Her career best points average came her junior season as she averaged 17.0 per game; her lowest was her freshman season when she averaged 15.7 per game. Whyte started in 126 total games at Arizona and played 4,243

minutes, both school records.

But, longevity wasn’t her only strength. This past season Whyte also recorded the first triple double in Arizona history, as she scored 31 points, got 16 rebounds and 10 assists against ASU. Team success may not have come for Whyte, but her time at Arizona helped her become a leader on and off the court.

“Obviously Davellyn was a big piece [of] what we did here in Arizona and her leadership on the floor just by her play,” Butts said. “She went out, she defended, she rebounded, she scored and she was the person who a lot of times led by example.”

Forward Shereen Sutherland, who was a freshman on the team last season, saw Whyte’s leadership first hand as Sutherland worked her way onto the court. “[Whyte] was a very smart player, knew

every position on the floor,” Sutherland said. “If you had a question about anything, you asked Davellyn.”

Sutherland said Whyte also helped the players academically. She answered questions about classes and offered other academic support.

“I’m very proud to have played with her and we watch all of her games [now],” Sutherland said.

At this point in her career, though, Whyte can’t use her collegiate accomplishments to earn more playing time. She also can’t have games like the one she had against ASU when she’s getting less than a quarter and a half of playing time.

And as Whyte adjusts to the challenges of WNBA basketball, the Wildcats must try and move on without one of the school’s all-time greats.

“Anytime you’re losing a player of her ability you’re going to have a tough time replacing her,” Butts said. “And you know obviously we have a team with a lot of new faces, but we also have players who have been thrown into the fire before.”

“We didn’t just come here and blow out all the competition, it was actually a hardfought game both times we played Serbia,” he said. “So, to know that there are other very developed teams out there in the world and know that we’re the most developed, just means a lot, it’s a big step for the USA.” The U.S. is 78-13 in what was originally known as the FIBA Junior World Championship and have won five gold and three silver medals at the U19/Junior Worlds.

Gordon’s best game came against China, scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in the 113-57 blowout.

During the tournament, Gordon played power forward for Team USA. Yet, Arizona head coach Sean Miller told USA Today last month that Gordon will play small forward for the Wildcats.

“We happen to have two starters back: Brandon Ashley, who played the four for us, and Kaleb Tarczewski, who played the five,” Miller said to USA Today. “It makes a lot of sense for us to have the ability to play Aaron with those two and in between two guards. I believe in many ways that’s his most natural position, when you consider that he doesn’t get enough credit for what a good defender he is.”

Gordon was also named the MVP of the McDonald’s All-American game and is the No. 4 overall recruit in the 2014 class, according to ESPN.com. “[Gordon’s] greatest gift is his versatility,” Miller said to USA Today. “He’s going to play the forward. Certainly, he’s going to play with two big guys throughout.”

While recruiting is a crapshoot, a good way to gauge a player’s ability is by looking at who else wants them.

Arizona’s top rated commit, athlete Cameron Denson, out of Salpointe Catholic High School, has been offered scholarships by Notre Dame, Oklahoma and West Virginia. Even Alabama visited him although he had already picked the Wildcats in January.

Denson, an All-American before his junior year of high school, is only rated as a four-star recruit. Yet the Crimson Tide seem to think Denson is good enough to go across the country to see.

Running back Nick Wilson has received offers from schools like Arkansas, Tennessee and Washington. Running back Jonathan Haden picked Arizona over Ohio State.

Signing Day is still seven months away and once the Trojans, Cardinal or Ducks add more players to their classes, they could easily shoot up to their usual spots atop the Pac-12 recruiting rankings.

But this recent recruiting revival could be the start of something big for Rodriguez.

Arizona has proven to be a reliable recruiting destination in the past, pulling in top 20 classes in 2005 and 2006.

Last season’s 8-5 mark is by far Rodriguez’s best first-year record, who started 3-8 at WVU. He went 11-1 four years later.

Rodriguez knows how to recruit and if he keeps it up, Arizona will be securely on the right track.

suffer from it. Rather, Heirlooms of August seem to pick up right where Kozelek left off on Sun Kil Moon’s early masterpieces. A line like “Mariachi music drifting through my backyard / A photograph forever etched in my mind” proves that Vessel is just as adept at scene-setting as Kozalek, or anyone working today with the palette that Vessel and Kozalek helped design in the mid-90s.

If all this seems a bit reductive of Down At The 5-Star’s charms, it’s only because Vessel himself sounds content to venture only within his comfort zone, and it’s lucky that Vessel’s comfort zone is such a joy to listen to.

DeGrazia Gallery holds Southwestern treasures

Sitting on 10 acres of the majestic Tucson foothills is the DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun. Designed and built by the late artist and winner of the UA’s coveted Alumni Achievement Award, Ettore “Ted” DeGrazia, the main gallery opened its doors in 1965.

Now listed on the National Historic Registry, it became home to six permanent collections of DeGrazia’s artwork and some 15,000 rotating pieces. The sprawling main gallery and its magnificent courtyard would appeal to any art lover, nature enthusiast or student.

“The one thing I recommend to take in at the gallery is the main gallery itself,” said executive director Lance Laber. “The art is amazing and the building itself is just beautiful.”

The gallery is an elaborate maze of corridors and stunning adobe archways. For a limited time, the main gallery is currently displaying: “DeGrazia Watercolors,” “The Seri Indians-A Primitive People of Tiburon Island in the Gulf of California” and “Our Lady of Guadalupe.”

Each collection shows DeGrazia’s incredible versatility, from realistic sculptures and abstract oil paintings, to jewelry and masks that reflect Southwestern culture.

IN ONE OF THE many intricate hallways in the DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun, multiple skylights let the Tucson sunlight filer through and illuminate the artwork within.

eclectic outdoor haven featuring more of DeGrazia’s artwork, as well as a stone pond with a striking Native American themed sculpture in the center. In the courtyard are carved depictions of “Our Lady of Guadalupe,” wooden bridges flanked by native desert plants and animal skulls hanging from wooden beams.

Outside of the main gallery, a handpainted sign and stone walkway lead to the Mission in the Sun. According to the gallery website this small chapel was, “built in honor of Padre Kino and dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, whose image DeGrazia painted onto the adobe altar.” The altar has become a shrine, which is graced with personal mementos and candles left by visitors. With an open air roof and a stick cross rising toward the sky, Mission in the Sun adds an air of mystery and reverence to the DeGrazia property.

DeGrazia’s gravesite with a simple cross and stones surrounding. After his death in 1982, Laber said the DeGrazia family contacted him about managing the gallery, grounds and DeGrazia’s private residence, which is also located on the property.

“I agreed and got involved in 1982,” Laber said. “I just felt that the Gallery in the Sun was so special. Tucson and the rest of the world needed this place to remain as beautiful and vibrant as when the founders always kept it.”

There’s something to be said for an album that doesn’t have to try hard to be beautiful.

Gorgeous finger-picked acoustic guitar, swooning slide guitar and harmonica set a tone within the first 12 seconds of the album Down At The 5-Star, and ultimately the mood doesn’t change much for the

remaining 11 tracks. Of course, the lack of movement in Heirlooms of August’s sound turns out to be the perfect backdrop for its leader Jerry Vessel’s stark lyrics, most of which infuse country images with brazen descriptions of drugs and self-destruction.

Knockout opener “Down At the 5-Star” gives the excellent lines, “Don’t know if it’s smoke, don’t know if it’s speed, she’s so young and pretty and I hope / She ain’t

messing with black tar as she breaks my heart.” Such lines make it clear that Vessel’s sympathies lie wholeheartedly with his damaged protagonists, and part of what makes tracks like “Annabelle” so affecting is the songwriter’s willingness to turn the spyglass back on himself. Down At the 5-Star is unabashedly a lyrics album, but sometimes it’s the stories that make folk/ Americana artists worth it.

If Vessel’s intimately-picked and sullenlysung ballads sound a bit too familiar, it’s probably due to his past association with balladeer extraordinaire Mark Kozelek of Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon.
