Meet John Langan from 1702 Pizza & Beer on Speedway Boulevard.

The Daily Wildcat: How long have you been serving and bartending?

Langan: I’ve been bartending for eight and I’ve been serving for maybe like five.

Have you bartended somewhere else before?

Yeah.

Where was that?

I bartended at P.F. Chang’s and Wild Garlic Grill.

Did you just bartend at those places or did you just serve?

I served and bartended.

What did you like better?

Bartending.

So then why did you switch to here?

I mean that’s a long story I guess. I was actually managing a bar down on [Fourth Avenue], and then switched over to serving, then to just bartending and then

came over here.

How did you like managing a bar?

I don’t think I would want to manage again. I think bartending is probably a better route. I think managing didn’t really fit my style of work ethic, I guess. I’d rather be the sticks with everybody else rather than telling other people how to bartend.

What’s your favorite part about bartending?

Probably talking to people.

Probably getting to know people.

Figuring out what they like and introducing them to things they probably haven’t had.

What do you appreciate in a customer?

Patience, questions—good questions—and curiosity.

What’s something that customers do that pisses you off?

Being impatient or, I guess, for example, maybe having a menu in front of them and then asking what we have.

How is it different cocktail bartending compared to

serving beer here?

Besides that there’s obviously no liquor and wine and stuff, like, that you still have to pair beer and, like, describe flavors and explain what certain things taste like. I guess the biggest difference would be it’s beer and liquor, two completely different things.

Do you guys have a lot of beers that people don’t usually know about?

Yeah, we get the customers that come in and ask if we have Bud Light on draft, but we have 46 craft beers and over 200 in the bottle and definitely have something for everyone. It’s easy to figure out what people could eventually like.

Do you have any memorable moments or crazy things that have happened that stand out to you?

Well, I’ve only been here for about four or five months, so I haven’t seen much. We do get a lot of frat kids that come in with their shirts off and stuff like that and think we’re going to serve them. And we have customers who don’t tip at all and are a little too rowdy. I’ve had people try to pass fake IDs. That’s kind of

interesting.

Do frat guys do that a lot?

Actually, I’ve seen it happen more with girls, which, I mean, there’s no real way to say who does it more—males or females— it’s just that it’s a college thing.

What other crazy things have you seen happen?

I’ve seen people, like, flip out and jump on or over the bar.

I’ve seen people fight. I’ve seen people throw drinks. People can get intense when they’re drinking.

When you were bar managing, what did you do to handle those situations?

I mean, yeah, you have to ask people to leave, and if they don’t you have to call the police or, like the last place I used to work, we couldn’t really force people to leave. We had a homeless man walk into our old bar one time with two fifths of vodka in both his hands, with no shirt on, and we had to walk up to him and ask him to leave.

The Sheepdogs rocked, lacked trombone

I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from The Sheepdogs.

Their type of music isn’t my usual preference, as some of their songs teeter on the edge of honky-tonk, which I can’t stand. Sorry.

But the band’s music certainly has credible attributes that make The Sheepdogs very defined in their sound. I really developed a respect for The Sheepdogs after they played a great show at Club Congress.

The show didn’t start nearly as well as it ended. First of all, there were very few people in attendance and that in itself made me a bit suspicious about how the rest of the night would go.

Without much of an introduction, the three-man band—each man with hair longer than mine— Radio Moscow started the show.

Stylistically Radio Moscow remained pretty stagnant. Blues chords with the typical guitar solo that screamed, wailed and relied on fast 16th triplets at the upper end became very familiar.

Although each musician obviously had technical skill, the band as a

whole has some room to grow. Its song structures were usually fastpaced with great, raunchy vocals— credit where credit is due—but then broke down into a double-time with drum fills every other bar.

I did appreciate the band’s blues influences, but it relied on them far too heavily. Radio Moscow’s performance lifted my hopes about The Sheepdogs some, but not much.

Club Congress seemed to fill a little more at this point, and the audience was becoming more varied, with people that looked like they were pushing 70 and a couple more “young’uns” like myself.

Yes, I got called a young’un.

Finally, The Sheepdogs took the stage, took a couple swigs of beer, made some Canadian jokes and started playing.

In my experience, seeing a band live is almost always better than listening to its recordings. I found this to be mostly true of The Sheepdogs.

Before committing to the band’s show, I listened to its albums and enjoyed most of their songs but wasn’t really impressed. I lost interest in some of The Sheepdogs’ songs as I was listening to them.

This was not the case at Club

Congress, and I was pleased to find that the band was very musically creative on stage. Many of the flourishes The Sheepdogs displayed so well live hadn’t translated in their recordings.

My respect for The Sheepdogs’ music grew as the night went on and they continued to impress me: beautiful harmonies, clean solos and stylistic changes.

There were a few highlights that demand some attention. The first would be Shamus Currie, or “Muthu F*ckin Shamus.” Currie, brother of lead singer Ewan, played the keys, adding bluesy organ overtones, backup vocals and the trombone.

The band was selling shirts that said “Muthu F*ckin Shamus” with a picture of a trombone. I didn’t understand it at the beginning of the night, but it makes complete sense now; he was a valuable addition to the band.

With that being said, I was really disappointed that The Sheepdogs didn’t take advantage of the trombone more. They only used it in one song. Sad. The other aspect of The Sheepdogs’ performance that I really appreciated was their musical creativity. I think

rock, especially feel-good rock, can easily become mundane, and bands can start to sound very similar. The Sheepdogs were able to mostly, but not completely, avoid that issue.

The guitar players would double their solos over each other, which filled their sound out well. The drummer took advantage of his entire layout and manipulated different styles throughout the set.

There were several other things that really made The Sheepdogs more than just a rock band, but there were still some moments that took me

back a step.

The entire night was sort of a flip-flop between whether I wanted to hear more of The Sheepdogs’ music. But alas I stuck it out, and was glad. The Sheepdogs’ show at Club Congress was an overall success and a new experience for me, but did not make me a die-hard fan.

The ZonaZoo will host one of its many community events of the year, Runderwear, along the UA Mall on Friday. Runderwear is an event open to all students and supports Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tucson.

For the event, students derobe before running the short dash, donating everything but their delicates.

“Basically the purpose of it is to donate clothes to Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Tucson and the idea is that you come, donate your clothes and at the start of the run you take off the shirt that you’re wearing and you can have spandex, sports bra, whatever you feel comfortable running in,” said Audrey Koomar, the ZonaZoo community outreach director and a senior studying business management and entrepreneurship. “But the idea is purely just an avenue to donate

clothes, so you take it off and then you start the run.”

This year, the ZonaZoo has planned to make this event bigger than ever before by increasing its marketing efforts.

“We’ve never marketed it [this much before,]” Koomar said.

“We’re trying to appeal to all the different student markets, … and we’re really just trying to promote to all of them the overall cause of donating all of their clothes that they don’t use.”

Although the event has taken place in past years, this year is expected to be a bigger turnout as the event is being paired with CATFEST, where T-Pain and Bassjackers will be performing later Friday night after the run.

“Last year we took a different turn on it because it wasn’t paired with the concert,” said Inyene Udoinwang, ZonaZoo executive director and a senior studying molecular and cellular biology. “Usually we do it with the [Wildcat] Events Board, but timing

just was off.”

Koomar and Udoinwang are excited to see how many students participate and the amount of clothes they can donate as a result of the increase in marketing this year.

“I mean, I know I have garbage bags filled with clothes that I don’t use anymore, so I’m going to donate those,” Udoinwang said.

“I’m interested to see the turnout just because we’ve marketed this a little differently than we have in the past, so we’re going to see how many people actually sign up and run.”

Runderwear is also an exciting event for students to come together outside of a sporting event by doing something together to give back in a fun way.

Check-in for the event begins at 5 p.m. Friday and the run begins at 6 p.m. The course is a short segment around the UA Mall, starting at Old Main and spanning to Cherry Avenue.

The ZonaZoo is also holding

a contest and will be giving out prizes for the funniest participant, the most Zona spirited and the most creative underwear.

In addition to Runderwear, the ZonaZoo also participates in other community events through such outlets as Junior Cats and attending a local high school pep rally. This year, the ZonaZoo will be going to Tanque Verde High School to show the students the importance of school spirit.

Koomar described Junior Cats as an introduction to the ZonaZoo culture at the UA for local youth.

“We take local middle schoolers onto the campus and [give] them a tour of the athletics department and just basically show them why they should go to college and kind of eliminate that stress that they have,” Koomar said.

Bumsted’s has unique flavors, creations Bumsted’s is located on 500 N. Fourth Ave. The restaurant has potential, but still needs changes to be made in regards to its menu and atmosphere.

Tucson’s Fourth Avenue is home to dozens of independently run bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs, making feeding the hungry student competitive.

Bumsted’s could be considered a local favorite in terms of its creative menu, which features sandwiches with all the fixings, including an array of deli meats, cheeses and condiments. Other unique menu items include a peanut-butter-fried-egg burger, called the “Ape Drape”. Bacon and meatloaf are other options.

Bumsted’s is sure to intrigue customers with its one-of-a-kind flavors and creations, but it lacks menu diversity; there really isn’t a choice for everyone. Not all customers are going to want such a specific meal. When

a customer asked a waitress for a plain cheeseburger, she even seemed surprised.

However, if someone is looking for a dish they’ve never had before, Bumsted’s may be the perfect place.

Bumsted’s was quite empty around 6 p.m. for dinner. In fact, the only customers in the establishment were those at the bar.

Bumsted’s definitely seems like it is more of a lunch spot.

In terms of ambience, the restaurant was unmemorably decorated and the temperature was uncomfortably warm; it evoked an almost stuffy feeling. The booths looked outdated and the pastry presentation—the first thing the customer sees after walking in—looked boring and plain.

In terms of pricing, Bumsted’s is on the more expensive side compared to its

competitors. The most inexpensive meal was around $6, but some of the selections sat around $14. I guess good food is worth good money.

The meal ordered—a burger and spaghetti—arrived at my table in a timely manner and was steaming hot. Both serving sizes were huge, the meals were fresh and both looked delicious.

The burger, smothered in American cheese and topped with crispy lettuce, sat between a fluffy Kaiser Roll. Taste-wise, it was good, but not better than any other Fourth Avenue burger joints. I didn’t even receive french fries with my meal. Instead, I got a measly bag of Lays chips.

On the other hand, Bumsted’s spaghetti and meatballs were absolutely delicious and well worth the price. I will definitely have leftovers for at least another one or

two meals.

Bumsted’s has the potential to be a one-of-a-kind Tucson delicacy, but some changes need to be made, both aesthetically and food-wise. A makeover of the inside restaurant is well overdue, and the addition of some more basic, reasonably priced menu items could really lure more students to eat at the restaurant.

Overall, Bumsted’s has a great location, a unique flavor and a memorable personality.

With just a few small upgrades, Bumsted’s could revamp its dinner-time experience and attract more customers from not only the UA, but from the greater Tucson community.

Flash in the Past wants to take you back in time.

This local studio and shop specializes in vintage pin-up photoshoots, providing an empowering experience to women who want to emulate and embody the classic pin-up dolls of the past.

Since 2008, this shop has occupied three locations and has remained in its third, in downtown Tucson, for over a year.

Its purpose is to make over everyday women from head to toe, providing everything for a complete transformation: hair, makeup, clothing, sets and props.

The shop has a strict focus on vintage pin-up, with themes based on the 1940s through the 1960s.

“Any photographer could

maybe do the things that we do, but because we specialize in this theme, it’s all we do,” said Ramsey Borrego, the owner and photographer for Flash in the Past. “It makes us different because we pay attention to lots of the little details that are specific to vintage pin-up and the theme chosen by the client.

Also, we’re the only ones in Tucson who do this, as far as I’m aware.”

The shop offers over 50 shoot themes ranging from beach to burlesque to patriotic.

Pricing information can be found on the shop’s website at flashinthepast.com, with package prices starting at $200 per model. The most popular package, according to Borrego, is the base package at $300.

“We work with anybody— all shapes and sizes—and you don’t need any experience,” Borrego said. “You can do this as a gift for a loved one or for

fun as a way to treat yourself.”

When asked what makes the shop unique, Borrego said, “We do our own photography, and the front of our shop is also a vintage clothing shop. We hold retro beauty classes once a month. We have some really neat clothes—stuff in the same style that Marilyn Monroe wore.”

The shop is located at 43 S. Sixth Ave. To make an appointment, call the shop or contact its employees through the store’s official website at least a month prior to the desired shooting date. A $100 non-refundable deposit is required for all reservations.

Statistical assault on PP unprofessional by maddie pickens The Daily Wildcat

T

hroughout September, the House launched a series of hearings on whether Planned Parenthood should continue to receive federal funding. The hearings came about after a group called The Center for Medical Progress posted videos of Planned Parenthood staff allegedly displaying the illegal sale of fetal tissue.

Planned Parenthood denies any wrongdoing, arguing that the videos are heavily edited—the creators copped to this—and that donating tissue for research is legal. However, this didn’t stop about 30 GOP congressmen from threatening another government shutdown if the hearings didn’t take place.

Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards appeared in the hearings, which were, to say the least, a bit of a circus.

Richards could often barely get through a full sentence without being interrupted. She was questioned about her large salary, a question that Rep. Carol Maloney later called “totally inappropriate and discriminatory,” saying that a

man would never be asked the same question.

Richards was labeled a criminal by Rep. Jimmy Duncan, who stated in his closing, “It seems to me that the apology you offered was like what some criminals do. They are not really sorry for what they have done. They are sorry they got caught.”

While these are all blatant breaches of professionalism by the GOP members, perhaps the most egregious was the chart presented by Rep. Jason Chaffetz, which purported to show the breast cancer screenings performed by Planned Parenthood going down drastically while the number of abortions performed went up drastically.

Chaffetz originally claimed these were statistics from Planned Parenthood itself. They were not. They were statistics from a pro-life organization, Americans United for Life.

However, the source of the numbers was not the biggest issue, in particular since they are based on actual statistics. Rather, the blatant misuse of the graph in order to mislead should be cause for concern.

The first red flag should be that the chart looks like it was made with Microsoft Paint and only includes two data points for each line—number of abortions and number of preventative cancer screenings in 2006 and 2013, respectively.

Furthermore, the arrowheads at the end of the line show the misleading conclusion that these

trends will continue.

Even more worrisome, however, is the fact that cancer screenings and preventions are plotted in the millions, while abortions are plotted in the hundreds of thousands. This is called a dualaxis plot and, as most people ignore the axes that graphs are plotted on, can cause them to draw incorrect conclusions about the level of correlation of the data.

It’s even more inappropriate to compare equivalent measures—i.e. services performed by Planned Parenthood—using different scales.

Most worrisome, however, is that the y-axis labels were omitted entirely.

Politifact.com quoted Noah Iliinsky of Complex Diagrams as writing, “By claiming to combine these two lines into one graph and then omitting the y-axis, we are being misled into to [sic] making a false comparison of two nonequivalent contexts. … The graph is absolutely misleading, and intentionally so.”

As Hannah Dinell, an ecology and evolutionary biology sophomore, said, “If I turned in graphs without axes in my lab classes, I would fail. If I tried to draw those kinds of conclusions, I would be laughed out.”

Politifact used the given numbers to make its own version of the chart in question that shows that the chart presented in the hearing was blatantly wrong.

One could question whether the hearings

were even necessary. The GOP majority admitted that they have not seen the full, unedited videos and have not asked the CMP to provide them. Also, Planned Parenthood’s federal funding does not go toward abortions in most cases, but rather preventative measures like cancer screenings.

When it comes down to it, though, the real issue that people should consider when looking at the congressional hearing isn’t funding Planned Parenthood. It’s not even abortion as a larger issue.

The real problem highlighted by these hearings is the professionalism of the GOP congressmen involved in the hearings and the blatant attacks on the leader of an organization.

Their use of misleading statistical analysis and their blatant disrespect for a witness show that, rather than investigating an important use of federal funding, the GOP’s only goal really seems to be assaulting a worthwhile entity while simultaneously making a farce out of the government.

If the GOP wants to be taken seriously, it needs to show the professionalism that should be expected of elected officials. Until then, the real cause for concern will be its behavior, not its policies.

martphones are evil and are ruining not only our generation, but Western civilization as a whole. Seriously, put down your phone every once in a while.

In the interest of full disclosure, I should first admit that I am part of the increasingly small minority of Millennials—and of Americans, actually—who do not own a smartphone.

I’ll explain why, and hopefully my reasoning will convince at least a few of you to at least think about whether your smartphone use might be a bit excessive.

Everyone by now has suffered the infuriating experience of receiving less than someone’s entire attention because they are preoccupied by their smartphone.

I’ve often gotten the feeling, when interacting with smartphone users, that they are actually incapable of a normal level of human empathy and intimacy, not only when they are using their smartphone, but also to a lesser degree when they have their precious device on their person but are not even using it. The available connection is a constant conversational risk.

Furthermore, on the rare occasions that users are actually separated from their devices, they seem to be able to give their full attention and to regain the humanity one loses under the spell of those devices. That is, until the smartphone withdrawals kick in.

Nomophobia is a cruel mistress.

Maybe I shouldn’t make light of alcoholism and drug addiction with that analogy, but the behavior is undeniably similar.

A recent set of studies by Andrew K. Przybylski and Netta Weinstein of the University of Essex suggests that having a smartphone within arm’s length significantly impairs intimacy in face-to-face verbal communication with strangers.

The research suggests, perhaps unsurprisingly, that the effect is even greater on conversations between people who already know each other.

Some therapists contend that they are especially harmful to romantic relationships. This is even more dangerous than the potential friends and lovers lost to Google searches or Fruit Ninja—not even our current, probably insufficient level of human connection is safe. That terrifies me, especially as the last of

my non-smartphone-using friends convert.

Dr. Shalini Misra, a psychology professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, similarly found that the presence of a smartphone led people to rate conversations as less fulfilling in one study and that they inhibited feelings of empathy in another.

She and other researchers also concluded that their symbolic value promoted feelings of resentment, and sometimes the sheer rudeness of this compulsion is the problem.

Misra has also written about how smartphones make people miss subtle but important cues in tone or facial expression and inhibit the profoundly important social function of eye contact. This is a really profound problem that should ring true with anyone living in the year 2015, especially young people.

The next generation will not

have had the childhoods and adolescences free from these devices that we had, during which we at least developed the crucial social skills upon which the very fabric of civilization depends up to a baseline level. We have since eroded those skills with the constant distractions and countless shallow, meaningless online interactions of the Smartphone Era, but at least they were there to erode.

As perhaps the last generation able to fully feel empathy and to be able to genuinely engage with others, we have a unique responsibility to the world. So, for yourself, for your loved ones and for society, put down your phone. And then turn it off, put it away in a drawer and leave it at home for a while.

UA ranks 67th as a global university

The UA is ranked 67th overall out of 750 universities, according to the newest global rankings released by U.S. News & World Report.

These are the second annual global rankings released by U.S. News & World Report. Last year, the UA placed 64th out of 500 universities.

In addition to the global rankings, U.S. News & World Report also ranked the UA 58th among best public universities in the U.S. for 2016.

The UA also continues to be the only university in Arizona that is represented in the top 100 of the overall global rankings.

The rankings, officially the list of Best Global Universities for 2016, are designed for

potential college students to use in order to help them discover the strengths and weaknesses of different universities across the world.

Nearly 60 different countries were represented in the rankings, with two schools from the United Kingdom cracking the top 10—the University of Oxford came in fifth, just before the University of Cambridge, which was ranked sixth.

UA proves helmets really do save lives

UA researchers confirmed in a study released earlier this month that wearing a bicycle helmet does in fact significantly decrease the risk of traumatic brain injury and even death.

The study shows that the odds of bicycle riders suffering severe brain injuries after serious accidents are reduced by 58 percent if they are wearing helmets, compared to riders who are not. Odds of death for helmeted riders from such injuries decrease by 59 percent.

“If you are severely injured and you were wearing a helmet, you are going to fare better than if you were not,” said Dr. Bellal Joseph, a trauma surgeon and associate professor of surgery for Banner-Health University Medical Center. Joseph was also the lead author of the study mentioned in a press release Oct. 8 at the 2015 Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons. The study is more comprehensive and definitive than a similar study described by Joseph during an interview with The Daily Wildcat last February.

In the new study, researchers analyzed records of 6,267 patients who had suffered severe brain injuries after bicycle accidents.

Just over 25 percent of the cyclists were wearing helmets.

Dr. Ansab Haider, a research fellow at the UA, said he is convinced that helmets provide safety benefits for minor accidents dealing with scrapes and bruises, and that helmets reduced the chances of head bleeds.

“But the real question was: If you get into a bicycle-related accident and end up with a head bleed, does helmet use somehow protect you?” Haider said.

The short answer is yes.

and then look at how they did, the helmet really made a difference,” Joseph said.

Haider and Joseph cited the study to support a push for creating programs that increase bike helmet use, the manufacturing of safer helmets, and the development and enforcement of helmet laws.

Allison Alterman, a senior studying creative writing and special education and a member of the UA Cycling Club, said she disagrees with the legal part of that push.

“I think that when [Haider and Joseph] talk about putting resources into making helmet laws and enforcing those helmet laws, that

maybe the greater issue is putting those resources into safer environments,” Alterman said. “When there’s a death of a cyclist, if there’s a one sentence report, it’s going to say: ‘Cyclist hit from behind by driver, killed. Not wearing a helmet,’ ” Alterman said.

The problem with such statements, she said, is that they shift the blame of the death to lack of helmets instead of dangerous roads and the situations they create in which drivers are in a position to strike riders.

Alterman does, however, acknowledge the importance of wearing helmets. “[The UA Cycling Club has] an absolute

policy: if you show up at the flagpole for a ride without a helmet, you get sent home.

You are not allowed to a ride with the team, you are not allowed on any group rides or [to] associate yourself with the UA cycling team if you are not wearing a helmet,” Alterman said. “As soon as I put a cycling kit on and I’m going on a training ride, I would never even think of not wearing a helmet.”

UA focuses on recruiting more minorities

The UA is working to provide more opportunities for ethnic minorities.

“There was a 47 percent increase in diversity within this year’s incoming freshman class,” said Associated Students of the University of Arizona President Manny Felix. “That is a huge increase, and it’s saying that the [UA] is paying attention and trying to attain more minority students.”

The UA 2014-15 Fact Book reported that there was a total of 22,050 UA students who identified as white.

“We work very hard to provide access opportunities for all students,” wrote Kasey Urquidez, the dean of

Undergraduate Admissions and vice president of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs Advancement, in an email interview. “Ethnic diversity is very important to us as we strive to expand access.”

Urquidez said the UA offers many programs and services that ensure the university is opening up access to minority students, such as Tu Universidad, Tu Futuro Hispanic/ Latino College Day, which was held this month in the Student Union Memorial Center and was presented by the Office of Early Academic Outreach.

The event, which gave students information on financial aid, scholarships and admissions, is one of

many that will take place this year.

Urquidez said that Native American College Day will take place Nov. 7, African-American College Day will tentatively take place Feb. 20 and Asian Pacific Islander College Day will take place April 16.

Catalina Carlos, the associate director of Early Academic Outreach and program director of Early Recruitment, said she thinks it is important to reach as many students as possible given the university’s location in a community with a large population of ethnic minorities.

“Our student body is no longer made up of primarily male, white students,” Felix said. “This nation is changing, and higher education institutions need

to reflect this diversity change.”

Carlos said that when the university speaks to students, they don’t just show them the school’s spirit, the classes they will take or the rigorous academics, but also that their cultures are represented here.

“We want to show them that we have specific cultural programs and centers for them, where they can find more of that connection with their background,” Carlos said.

Felix said diversity will prepare college students for work in a global society. Regardless of their desired career, Felix said he feels UA students are bound to work with employers, employees and customers who come from many different backgrounds.

“In many ways, college is about learning and working with people— understanding different cultures and backgrounds is essential for success in our diverse world,” Urquidez said.

Felix expanded upon the mission of the university and Office of Early Academic Outreach.

“When we attract minority students to our university, we are bringing in students like myself: students who are looking to get an education when our parents did not have the same opportunities as we do now, an education that will help us become successful,” Felix said.

Space science was ranked at sixth, geosciences at 29th, plant and animal sciences at 32nd and environment and ecology at 42nd — which tied with arts and humanities, also at 42nd. Each program was able to crack the top 50 in its respective field.

The space science program was also able to place within the top 10 in regional and global research reputation rankings.

The methodology used by U.S. News & World Report to compile the global rankings was comprised of 12 different indicators.

“The Best Global University rankings … focus specifically on schools’ academic research and reputation overall and not their separate graduate and undergraduate programs,” wrote Robert Morse, the chief data strategist for U.S. News & World Report, in an article describing the process by which the report determines the world’s top universities.

A pool of 1,000 universities was created in order to provide a basis to rank the top 750 universities in the world.

The three main indicators, which comprise 37.5 percent of the score, are the institution’s global research reputation, the regional research reputation and the number of publications that are among the 10 percent most cited.

The number of publications produced, the percentage of publications most cited and international collaboration made up another 30 percent of the formula. Other indicators include the number of books published, the number of conferences held and the number of doctorate degrees awarded.

To calculate the research reputations of the universities, the report used results from the Thomson Reuters’ Academic Reputation Survey conducted in 2014.

“The survey … aimed to create a comprehensive snapshot of academics’ opinions about world universities,” Morse wrote.

The UA earned 37th in the regional research reputation category of the rankings while sliding to 99th in the global research reputation category in 2016.

These rankings will help provide potential college students with the chance to see the strengths of the UA and where there is still room for the university to continue to improve in the future.

After two years of waiting, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tucson finally matched second-grader Reegan Wilson with his “big,” UA economics senior Jon Huckins.

In March, BBBST matched 8-yearold Wilson with Huckins, and now they hang out two to three times a month for a few hours at a time.

Rebecca Bennett, the program coordinator for their match, said that out of her 65 matches, they are one of the sweetest ever, and that she’s sure Huckins will one day attend Wilson’s high school and college graduations.

Bennett said Wilson’s mom called BBBST when he was five and had expressed interest in the program, but that children have to be at least six to participate. She said his mom called back immediately after he turned six, and that unfortunately it was another year before they could find Wilson a suitable match.

She said Wilson has a single mom, and although he has an older sister, he’s the only child at home right now. Despite the two-year delay, Bennett said that his mom was so happy when she met Huckins and thought that the match was worth the wait.

“I love being a big brother. It’s

just good to connect with a little guy like him,” Huckins said. “They did a really good job matching us, and I lucked out. He’s super polite, and I think that’s a testament to his mom.”

Wilson said he loves BBBST because it’s fun and Jon is the best big brother ever.

Huckins said they try to mix up the activities they do, like feeding horses, swimming and going to the Children’s Museum of Tucson — but they typically go back to sports every other time because it’s what they have in common. Huckins added that Wilson is a natural athlete.

Wilson said he was nervous at first but added that he loves playing sports and hanging out with Huckins. According to Wilson, their birthdays are only two days apart.

When asked what his favorite part about having a big brother is, Wilson looked at Huckins and said, “Just you.”

“I really like the bond,” Huckins said. “I feel like we’ve grown really close. Even just after the first couple times we had hit it off really quick.”

Katie Kernodle, the BBBST volunteer recruitment coordinator, said the organization’s mission is to “provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported, one-toone relationships that change their

lives for the better, forever.”

Kernodle said that BBBST has over 300 active matches and served 508 children in 2014.

“Being a big brother or sister doesn’t take any special skills,” she said. “You just have to be yourself, show up on time when you say you’re going to be somewhere and be that solid friend in their life.”

She also said BBBST has more than 200 boys on its waitlist right now and needs big brothers.

“You can never have too many positive people in your life as a kid,” Bennett said. “You see lives change just because of one new, healthy relationship.”

Huckins said he knows there’s a shortage of brothers and encourages more to sign up because it’s a gratifying chance to influence a child.

“It’s just a friendship, a bond. He’s going to influence you and make you a better person as well,” Huckins said.

When asked what he wants to be when he grows up, 8-year-old Wilson said, “A big brother. I think it’s going to be fun because Jon thinks it’s fun.”

Wildcats ready to pounce on Buffs

Arizona football is now back on the winning track, and the Wildcats will be looking to keep their momentum as they travel to Boulder this weekend to take on Colorado. Arizona blew out Oregon State on Saturday after losing to both UCLA and Stanford.

All eyes are now looking forward to how Arizona will respond to another road test. The Wildcats are 2-1 on the road through the first half of the season.

This year’s Colorado team (3-3, 0-2 Pac-12 Conference) is better than what the Wildcats have seen from the Buffaloes the past couple of years.

“It sounds like coach-speak when we say our league is competitive in all 12 teams, and you think coaches are just saying that, but in our league, it really is that way,” said head coach Rich Rodriguez. “I think it’s not just because of any one factor, other than there’s been a commitment that’s been unprecedented in the league.”

Rodriguez has taken notice of Colorado’s improvement and praised the Pac-12 for continued success from top to bottom.

“Colorado’s got new stuff. We’ve got new stuff. Everybody’s spending money and putting money back in their programs,” Rodriguez said. “If you do things the right way and put money in your programs, you’re

going to have success.”

Colorado’s sudden improvements have been noticed throughout the conference. The Buffaloes went 2-10 with a 0-9 conference record that included a 38-20 loss at Arizona last season.

“They’re way better. I was just telling a lot of people that this is a new team, and they’ve been pretty good this year,” said Arizona safety Will Parks. “I watched their game against Colorado State and they looked pretty good, so we’re looking forward to going out there and competing.”

The Buffaloes will come out hot against Arizona as they look for their first conference win in over a year.

As for the Wildcats, they’re just happy to be coming off a win after two brutal weeks of football. Rodriguez said the coaches are reenergized, just like the players.

“You get a little bounce in your step, and more than anything you get your confidence back,” Rodriguez said.

Arizona’s game against Oregon State was easily its best defensive performance of the season, as it only allowed 249 yards and held the Beavers to 5-16 on third down conversions. It was a far cry from what we saw during their two-game losing streak.

The play of the game was when Parks drilled Oregon State receiver Jordan Villamin. Their collision caused Villamin to drop the pass, but

the play resulted in a flag because of the way the impact looked. The flag was picked up and Parks made arguably the biggest defensive play for the Wildcats this season.

“I didn’t know it was that crazy until I got all the tags on Instagram and Twitter,” Parks said of the hit.

“That’s the game of football. That’s what you’re supposed to do: let your presence be felt.”

This game served as a turnaround for the Arizona defense after struggling against stout offenses in UCLA and Stanford.

“I had to give some type of spark to the defense just because our last few games prior to that weren’t the games that we wanted to have,” Parks said.

“That game [Oregon State] kind of gave us our edge back, like coach said, our ‘hard-edge.’ It felt pretty good, but now it’s time to get ready for another good team in Colorado.”

Redshirt junior safety Paul Magloire Jr. moved up to linebacker last weekend and played well. Arizona has suffered a multitude of injuries to linebackers this season and Magloire stepping up offered a big boost to the defense.

Magloire first prepped at linebacker the week prior to Oregon State, and after another week of preparation, the newfound fill-in for Scooby Wright III said he feels more comfortable at the position.

really focus up,” Magloire said.

Wright will sit out with an injury for the fifth time this season. Magloire, Jake Matthews and others will be counted on to continue to step in.

Rodriguez also noted running back Nick Wilson was banged up after the win over Oregon State, but wouldn’t emphasize on the extent of Wilson’s injuries. He was listed as questionable with a foot injury in Thursday’s injury report.

Reciever Trey Griffey (foot) and linebacker Haden Gregory (knee) are listed as probable, while

defensive back DaVonte’ Neal (hamstring) and defensive lineman Jeff Worth (concussion) are listed as questionable. Griffey will attempt to start and play in his first game of the season.

Look for Arizona to come out strong Saturday against Colorado with a chance to continue its newfound momentum in the Pac-12. Kickoff in Boulder is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be televised on Fox Sports 1.

The UA men’s and women’s cross country team will travel to Louisville, Kentucky, to compete in the pre-nationals meet Saturday.

This meet will be host to some of the most talented teams in the country, providing Arizona a challenge it has yet to face this season. The Wildcats will be ready to compete, as they have lately been hitting their stride.

Arizona toppled the competition in its last meet, the U of A Cross Country Twilight. The top four women’s spots were all occupied

by Wildcats to go along with four top-10 finishers on the men’s side.

Leaders Molly Callahan and Collins Kibet took first and second in their respective races. This came as no surprise to head coach James Li. “[I’m] definitely happy to see them finishing well; they’re running well,” Li said.

“At the same time, it is expected. They can do better and they should be doing better.”

This upcoming meet will serve as a challenge to Kibet.

“Men’s side is a great challenge for Collins to be up there with the best runners in the country,” Li said.

The meet will be many of the team members’ first time competing with a group of this caliber—a “mega meet,” as coach Li called it.

“It’s a great place to go and is in the same place as nationals. It’s a great experience for the young runners, and they will get a chance to compete against good competition,” Li said.

The runners will be prepared, having had a good week of practice leading up to the meet. “[Practice has] been really great, so we have to do what we are capable of doing and do what we did in practice,” Li said.

This meet marks the halfway point of the season. Li has commended his runners’ output thus far, but wants to see better performances from the whole team this week.

“All those young guys, I want to see them run better,” Li said. “In terms of the ladies,

Molly, Addi [Zerrenner] and Claire [Green] are very competitive, and I think they have done a great job, and I only think that they can get better from here.”

Li said the Wildcats need to have the fourth and fifth runners come closer to the third spot.

“With that, we will have a great competitive team,” Li said.

Arizona will seek to make this improvement in the upcoming meet, a large but achievable challenge considering the level of talent in the field. The meet is set to begin at 8 a.m.

Trending down: Arizona in search of win

Arizona women’s soccer will head to the Pacific Northwest to take on No. 16 Washington State on Friday night after being beaten by the Los Angeles schools over the weekend.

This is a matchup between two teams that are trending toward opposite ends of the standings right now.

The Wildcats (8-4-1, 2-3 Pac12 Conference) have lost three straight games and quickly fell from a tie for the Pac-12 lead to seventh. The Cougars, on the other hand, have won their last three games putting them at 11-2 for the season and 4-1 in the Pac-12. Washington State sits behind only Stanford in the conference standings.

A big reason for the Cougars’ success this year has been their dynamic offense, which leads the Pac-12 in several offensive categories including goals scored (26), goals per game (2.0) and total points (72).

The Cougars are actually No. 10 in shots taken, despite the high number of goals they score, which is a testament to

their efficiency on that end.

Their two offensive stars are Kaitlyn Johnson and Kourtney Guetlein, both of whom are tied for second in the conference for goals scored (6).

The Washington State offense will go up against an Arizona defense that has lately been erratic. The Wildcats had a stout defense early in the season and gave up just seven goals through their first 11 games.

But in the weekend series against UCLA and USC, Arizona gave up eight goals in just two games. Its defense now ranks third to last in the conference in goals allowed.

Which version of Arizona defense shows up could very well determine the outcome of its game with Washington State. Perhaps the Wildcats can get back in shape defensively and prove the weekend in Los Angeles was an anomaly.

If they do manage to get their defense back on track, the Wildcats have a great shot of neutralizing the Cougars’ potent offense. If the defense from the last two games shows up, however, the Wildcats will be in a world of trouble.

The Wildcats will need to find momentum on the other side of the ball as well.

The Cougars aren’t a great defensive team—they’re sixth in the conference in goals against average—but their goalkeeper, Ella Dedrick, leads the Pac-12 in saves (69) and save percentage (.863).

The Wildcats’ offense, unlike the defense, didn’t totally struggle in L.A. It still ranks in the top half of the conference in nearly every category.

The Wildcats are in serious need of a win to break their three-game skid, but they’ll need a great effort on both sides of the ball to pull a win out in Pullman, Washington.

If last year’s matchup between these two teams is any indication of how this game may play out, however, it bodes well for Arizona.

The Wildcats came away victorious in a convincing 4-1 game.

We’ll see if history repeats itself Friday at 7 p.m.

‘Cats look to serve UCLA, USC upsets

The schedule only gets more difficult for No. 14 Arizona volleyball after losing to No. 4 Washington in four sets and edging out Washington State in five. The Wildcats will take on No. 12 UCLA on Friday and No. 1 USC on Sunday. This will be the sixth consecutive week Arizona has faced a team ranked in the top 25.

Arizona (13-5) will continue the quest to get a win against an opponent ranked higher than it is, as the team has dropped tightly contested matches to Ohio State, Texas, ASU, Stanford and, most recently, Washington.

The Wildcats will also look to string together their first win streak since getting off to a fast 8-0 start.

Arizona will have to maintain UCLA outside hitter Jordan Anderson.

Anderson was a former teammate and very close friend of Nikki Attea

when they both played together at West Virginia for two years before transferring to UCLA and Arizona, respectively.

“It’s going to be weird seeing her on the other side of the net,” Attea said. “I think we’re both excited and are just focusing on the game, and then we’ll see each other after.”

Attea also noted how much Anderson has developed and improved, saying that she saw a lot of growth and maturity in their two years together. Arizona head coach Dave Rubio said he has similar feelings about Anderson’s game.

“She has a very smooth game: fast, explosive, really athletic, good jumper and plays a lot [bigger] and a lot more powerful than she was,” Rubio said.

Anderson is part of a UCLA passing attack that is very explosive—one that Arizona must maintain to stay within striking distance.

“They’re the best passing team

in the league,” Rubio said. “They’re going to be insistent all the time.

We’ll need to be able to defend those guys.”

Rubio said the serve and pass games will be difference makers in both weekend matchups. Rubio said he believes his team lost to Washington because it did not serve and pass well enough.

“I think, without question, whoever wins the serve and pass game is going to win the match,” Rubio said. “Those two skills will influence the outcome of rallies.

Whoever can really handle that challenge will be the team that can really come out on top.”

DI looms for Wildcats hockey

ver since Arizona lost to ASU’s new Division I team in Gila River Arena two weeks ago, many have been asking if Arizona will ever join the Sun Devils’ ranks in DI hockey.

The answer is not a simple yes or no.

It is time, however, for university officials to take a page out of ASU’s book to help elevate Arizona to the NCAA level.

ASU head coach Greg Powers is a major proponent of a varsity hockey team for the Sun Devils’ rival.

“Hopefully one day, they decide to do what we’ve done [in Tempe] in Tucson,” Powers said of the UA. “I would be such a huge advocate of that.”

Powers also thinks a DI team could work for the UA, given the school’s strong fan support and facilities at the Tucson Convention Center.

That’s where Arizona has a slight advantage over ASU. The TCC was recently renovated,

and as of the 2014-2015 season, the arena drew crowds of over 1,000 to games against Liberty and NAU. Just after ASU made the jump to DI, a $32 million donation was made to the school to help pay for the elevation of the program, which was the school’s largest donation ever.

The Pac-12 Conference has supported ASU’s move to DI and even streamed the UA and ASU’s game on the Pac-12 Networks website two weeks ago.

The conference would be wise to help support Arizona’s move to the NCAA, given the very few teams on the West Coast alongside ASU. “I think it would be great for the rivalry,” Powers said.

The last time Arizona will meet ASU in Tucson before the Sun Devils play a full independent schedule in 2016 will be Feb. 19. ASU will receive complete DI recognition in 2017.

Powers said the last meeting between the rivals will be bittersweet.

“I’m an alumni and really cherish this rivalry so much,” Powers said.

“It’s always been a highlight and pinnacle of my season, as a coach

and player, playing the UA.” For Arizona coach Chad Berman, his focus is not on DI, but improving the program as is.

Berman cites Penn State and ASU’s programs’ stranglehold of the ACHA before they made the move to the NCAA. “Our concern right now should be to taking the next step in the ACHA, dominating the ACHA, being a top-five team, winning a national title and then we can go from there,” Berman said. “I don’t see the point in looking past that.”

Arizona Athletics Director Greg Byrne told the House of Sparky in 2014 that, “Hockey is not on the radar screen for the UA.” If Arizona were to make the leap to DI, however, it could be able to wrangle in top-level recruits with players picking warm Tucson over frigid Boston and New Haven, Connecticut.

The Sun Devils were able to lure in 17 new recruits when ASU announced its jump to DI. Arizona would certainly be able to follow suit.

Zombie Mud Run at Buckelew Farms What better way to get in the spirit of Halloween than to run for your life from a pack of hungry zombies?

For the second year, Buckelew Farms will host a 5K Zombie Mud Run. The race begins at 4 p.m. on Saturday and participants will have to make their ways through the obstacle course without getting their flags taken by the undead. The top survivors will be rewarded with prizes for their valiant efforts.

Tickets can be purchased online for $40, and cheaper rates are available for groups with 10 or more participants. The ticket price also comes with a coupon for $10 off the admission price of Terror in the Corn, Buckelew Farms’s famous haunted corn maze.

Haunted Ruins: A Witch’s Quest If you’re looking for something a little less

scary but still Halloween-related, take a trip to Valley of the Moon for “Haunted Ruins: A Witch’s Quest.”

The Valley of the Moon is a magical little place off of Tucson Boulevard, and for the past 40 years, volunteers put together a show every October. This year’s show is about a young witch who must learn the difference between good and evil. Through the walking tour, guests can experience the story and become a part of the performance itself.

Tours depart every 20 minutes and go from 6-8:20 p.m. on Friday and 5:40-8:20 p.m.

Tucson Classics Car Show While there are lots of Halloween-centered events going on this weekend, there are still some happenings that don’t involve jacko’-lanterns and ghosts, including the Ninth Annual Tucson Classics Car Show.

Presented by the Rotary Club of Tucson Foundation, the Classics Car Show will feature over 400 antique cars of all makes and

models.

The show is being held at The Gregory School from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, and tickets are $5. There will also be a food court, vendors, live music and awards for the best cars in the show.

Firefighter Chili Cook-off The Tucson Firefighters Local 479 charter is holding its annual charity chili cook-off in Reid Park on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m..

The proceeds benefit the Tucson Firefighters Adopt-A-Family Program, which helps families in need by providing them with basic necessities during the holiday season.

There will be 30 decorated booths featuring all different kinds of chili, and awards will be given for the best chili, best-decorated booth and most team spirit.

The event typically serves over 750 gallons of chili to over 10,000 guests, and with firefighters from all over Pima County

competing for bragging rights, you can be assured it’s going to be good.

World Margarita Championship For the 21-and-over crowd, Tucson boasts a long list of bars that serve up even longer lists of drinks, so it only makes sense that Tucson Originals would hold its own World Margarita Championship right here in town.

Beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Westward Look Wyndham Grand Resort and Spa, margaritas from all over will go head-tohead in one of the fruitiest events of October.

Guests can taste-test all different kinds of drinks and food and will get the chance to vote for their favorite drink for the People’s Choice award.

Tickets are available online or at the door, although it is recommended that attendees purchase their tickets ahead of time.

Beach House drops a suprise album BY alex furrier

A month and a half. A lot can happen in a month and a half.

Grades rise and fall­—mostly fall—seasons change and Kanye West announces he’s running for president in 2020. So it goes.

One thing that rarely happens in the span of a month and a half: two new albums from one great band.

In the age of the Internet, surprises have become scarce. The Internet detectives, made up of millions of users with nothing better to do than snoop around, are a powerful force in 2015. To everyone’s great surprise, the detectives discovered a second newly released album from a great band last week. Just a month and a half after the release of Depression Cherry, Beach House decided to treat everyone to a double dose of the dream-pop duo. Thank Your Lucky Stars drops today.

The surprise album drop is not a new maneuver. Plenty of highprofile artists, including Beyoncé, Thom Yorke of Radiohead and even Drake, with his surprise 2015 release, woke up one day and thought “Yep, today is the day to unexpectedly blow everyone’s mind.”

Beach House has decided to join that club with an obviously planned but unannounced turnaround album.

Perhaps the closest example to Beach House’s move comes from fellow indie darling Sufjan Stevens, who returned from a fouryear pseudo hiatus with a completely unannounced, sprawling 60-minute EP, All Delighted People and two months later added the LP The Age of Adz. While Stevens’ albums represented a massive shift in sound when compared to each other, Thank Your Lucky Stars is similar enough to Depression Cherry that it could easily be considered the second half of one overarching double album. That album’s

suggested title: Thank Your Lucky Depression Cherry, Now with Two Times the Old Amount of Beach House. It’s got a nice ring to it… or not.

To save you some time, I’ll summarize this review of the leaked album as such: if you liked Depression Cherry, you’ll like Thank Your Lucky Stars. Simple as that, really. The two albums work not as mirrors, but as fraternal twins; similar enough to suggest an obvious lineage, but not identical.

Whereas Depression Cherry came across as ethereal and ambivalent, Thank Your Lucky Stars feels more downtempo and melancholic. The difference is subtle, but the tracks compound to exaggerate the albums’ tones.

Beach House hallmarks pop up as always: tracks drowning in oceans of reverb, syncopated drum loops and whimsical vocals.

After all, Beach House is more or less the gold standard of dreampop bands and Thank Your Lucky Stars shows that the band still deserves to bear that title.

Heavy is the head that wears the crown, unless it’s the crown of dream pop, in which case I assume the crown would feel weightless and emit soothing synth sounds when touched.

Thank Your Lucky Stars lacks stand-out tracks that reach the same heights of “Levitation” or “Space Song” off of Depression Cherry.

Unlike Depression Cherry, which finds its strongest tracks on the front end, Thank Your Lucky Stars saves its best for last. The latter half of the album, beginning with “The Traveller” and ending with “Somewhere Tonight,” can compete with any previous Beach House album sequence.

On the whole, I prefer the firstborn of Beach House’s 2015 progeny. However, this could be a result of having listened to Depression Cherry somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 times to date. I’ve grown to love Depression Cherry, but I’ve only just met
