Editor’s Column Arizona’s Loneliest Highway Douglas Towne

O

ne of Arizona’s busiest rural highways is also one of the state’s loneliest roads.

The 107-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 93 from Wickenburg north to Interstate 40 in western Arizona boasts but a handful of restaurants, a few gas stations, and perhaps a dozen motel rooms. Still, the roadway is alive with vehicles day and night, as this is the main drag between Phoenix and the bright lights of Las Vegas.

constructed bridges over Burro Creek, the Santa Maria River, and the Big Sandy River.

Much of its peril came from motorists’ excitement to arrive at their vacation destination. Impatient drivers often tested their luck behind the wheel way before getting to a casino. As a result, much of the roadway has been expanded into a divided, four-lane highway for safety reasons. Plans call for its incorporation into the proposed Interstate 11, which would eventually link Nogales, Arizona to Reno, Nevada.

For hungry or tired motorists traveling this stretch of U.S. Highway 93, however, the route’s two service centers have dwindled to one.

Nothing, Arizona – a wide spot in the road – once featured a forlorn service station that peddled fuel, food, and souvenirs. Opened in 1977, it managed to attract customers solely by its counterintuitive name. This business ran out of gas, so to speak, and closed more than a decade ago. Nothing is now in tune with its name.

Wikieup, located 20 miles north of Nothing, chugs along as the lone pit stop on this stretch of lonely highway. The

community makes an impression out of proportion to its population, which doesn’t exceed the seating capacity of a typical nightclub. En route to Las Vegas, your excitement, aspirations - and cash - are still intact upon arrival in Wikieup. Heading home after too many late nights in Sin City, Wikieup is a much needed 24-hour coffee stop.

The community once displayed one of Arizona's most unusual signs. Along the highway was a derelict “GARAGE” sign partially obscured by a Saguaro cactus.

Lower on its pole, a smaller sign cryptically read, “L•T•R BUS TICKET OFFICE,” which stood for the Las Vegas, Tonopah and Reno Stage Company. But why had there once been a ticket office in Wikieup, more than 150 miles from Las Vegas?

Launched in 1921 by Sebastian Mikulich, the LTR ferried people and freight from Las Vegas more than 200 miles north to Tonopah, Nevada in a sevenpassenger Packard. He upgraded to a 10door Chevy Apache, and eventually acquired a fleet of white-and-blue buses that operated for more than six decades according to a 2012 Vegas Seven article.

The LTR expanded to Reno, and the nearby California towns of Death Valley, Bishop, and Lake Tahoe. The company later acquired the Phoenix-Kingman & Boulder City Stage in 1948 and began operating buses through Wikieup.

Nevada Test Site employees between Mercury and Las Vegas. The bus company eventually folded after the Mikulich family sold it to an unscrupulous operator in the 1980s.

While the LTR will motor on in memories, there’s not much left of this once-popular intercity regional bus company. One former LTR bus, a 1964 General Motors PD 4106, is on display at the Pacific Bus Museum in Fremont, California. But tangible remnants of the LTR bus company are as sparse as services along the Arizona roadway it once plied, U.S. Highway 93. Even the highway’s ghost coaches, sadly, belong to other bus companies.

The “Ghost Bus of Highway 93,” Bus #777, was on a Phoenix-to-Laughlin turnaround trip when it disappeared without a trace in the desert. According to internet legend, the bus reappears late at night, literally passing through cars on the desolate roadway. But its disappearance allegedly occurred in the early 1990s, long after the LTR bus lines had ceased operations.

Tempe Milling New Life into Former Flour Factory Ian Kraft

T

he Hayden Flour Mill on the southeast corner of Rio Salado Parkway and Mill Avenue is set to be converted into a hotel/performance amphitheater/office building complex.

The Tempe City Council voted on the renovation in December 2014 and will be working alongside Baum Development, a Chicago-based realty group, on the project.

burned that mill down in 1917, and the current structure was completed in 1918, according to the city's website. Today's mill is the oldest cast-in-place, reinforced concrete building in Tempe. The grain elevator and silos, constructed in 1951, were the tallest buildings in the city until 2007.

Bay State Milling ceased milling operations at Hayden Flour Mill on April 1, 1998.

Tempe came to an agreement with Baum Development on a 99-year lease as, “(the city) did not want to lose the rights by selling the mill,” Councilman Kolby Granville said. “We have the utmost confidence in (Baum),” he said. “I, personally, am very excited for this. I am extremely happy for the city.”

development agreement back to the city,” Baxter-Ging said.

Baxter-Ging has worked for Tempe for more than 15 years, and she said although it is nowhere near the beginning of construction, she is eager to see the changes to come.

"The flour mill is a beloved part of this city. We want to be sure that it survives," Baxter-Ging said. "It is a physical representation of the evolution of our city and as a result, the community has a great connection to this structure.”

Jesse Ray, 36, has lived in Tempe his entire life and said the renovation is long overdue. “The mill has become an eyesore over the years,” Ray said. “There is so much history in the building, and there is so much love for it, but with all of the new

buildings nearby, the mill looks old and run down.

"I speak for all of us Tempe-lifers when I say, ‘It's about time,'," Ray said.

Baum Development officials declined to comment on details of the project. “I appreciate your interest. We’re not ready to talk with the press yet,” Baum Realty CEO David Baum responded in an email.

“On a scale from 1-10, this is a 10,” Granville said.

According to Granville, the plans for the mill include adding office space for local and international businesses, space for a hotel to be built to accommodate the growing numbers in tourism in Tempe, as well as a performing arts amphitheater.

Because of recent hikes in rent costs, Granville said, the amount of art and music throughout Mill Avenue has steadily decreased. However, renovation of the mill will bring artists back to the historical region.

“We have a long history of musical and artistic endeavors on Mill,” Granville said.

“The fact that this space will have a small amphitheater gives us one more way to bring culture back to Mill Ave.” City of Tempe public information officer Kris Baxter-Ging said it could be a while. “The people at Baum Development have until March 2017 to get the

he Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson is in the midst of an upgrade to its aging Cathedral Square campus in the heart of historic downtown Tucson.

The restoration of St. Augustine’s Cathedral was completed “about two years ago,” said diocese Director of Communications Steff Koeneman.

As the needs of the diocese change, it is striving to maintain the history and charm of the existing architecture, while moving into the 21st century.

Koeneman said, “Part of the (surrounding) wall will be coming down, but not all of it. The church has changed; it used to be a more walled-off entity, but now were trying to be more embracing and open.”

Designers with The Architecture Company and builders with Diversified Design and Construction must restore and upgrade several late 19th and early 20th century buildings while integrating a modern four-story office and banquet hall complex in place of the old parish hall.

Terry Majewski, the chairwoman of the Tucson-Pima County Historical Commission, said, “Our biggest concerns (with the design) were that the height and massing of the new building dwarfed the

Ultimately, the city of Tucson reached a compromise. Historic Preservation Officer Jonathan Mabry said, “The city and community value our historic buildings. It’s a widespread relief that Marist College (1915) will be preserved for low-income and senior housing … but the demolition of parish hall (1916) is a loss to the community.”

Despite the problems and compromises inherent in a project of this scope, the city of Tucson is embracing the

changes. Mabry said, “All of this is good for our economy, and creates jobs.”

Restoring 100-year-old buildings presents unique problems. Kevin Palmer, project manager for Diversified Design and Construction, said of Our Lady’s Chapel (1916), which is undergoing restoration, "There are not a lot of documents, so we looked in the University of Arizona archives, and the diocese's photos to emulate the original design," including reproducing a spiral staircase that was sold years ago.

Larry Lang, president of Diversified Design and Construction, said “There had been extensive water damage to the (chapel’s) adobe structure. The biggest obstacle was to make it water tight again,” adding that John Alan, responsible for the art adorning the chapel interior, requires a high quality, smooth surface to work on.

An environmental company was called in to remove inches of bird feces in the attic.

Lang said the chapel could be completed by mid-August.

o learn how much buildings have changed over the past half-century, just ask Wespac Construction, which is renovating the old Bashas’ shopping center located at the southwest corner of 32nd Street and Indian School Road in Phoenix.

“The building processes and materials originally used on the project, constructed in 1959, are drastically different from anything built today,” Nate Largay, Wespac coordination coordinator, says.

“Gauging the thickness of concrete and the dimensions of bricks [bricks were manufactured larger than what they are

today] have created somewhat of a guessing game when cutting for utilities, cabling, etc.,” Largay says.

“One interesting fact the project superintendent said was that they plan to use some of the original brick walls, which they are currently being sandblasted to give them a refurbished and vintage look,” Largay adds. “We are sitting at just above 50 percent completion, and started the interior work in the summer."

The shopping center is infamous for either being empty or struggling to sustain long-term tenants. Besides a Bashas’ grocery store, the center once included the AMF Squaw Peak Lanes bowling alley, Howard’s Ace Hardware, and other retail outlets. The renovation will improve the

Arcadia Fiesta Renovation Full of Surprises

structure and its surrounding areas and will reopen as Arcadia Fiesta.

Building dimensions are just some of the mysteries Wespac Construction has uncovered in renovating the 147,000 square-foot center. The project’s biggest surprise, however, was locating an unknown basement.

“The owners knew of only one basement underneath an existing storefront,” Largay says. "A second vault was discovered during the demolition process, which contained a handful of old Salt River Project equipment from the 1960's. The owners didn't know about it, SRP didn't know about it, so it was somewhat humorous to be stumbling upon the old relics."

Contractors performing work for Chasse Building Teams include McCain Construction, which installed site utilities; Sun Valley Masonry erected the block exterior of the building and completed the exterior concrete including all curb and sidewalks, along with two basketball courts. MKB Construction is completing interior framing and drywall.

hese days, Marana is known more for growing crops of subdivisions rather than its traditional fields of alfalfa and cotton. Along with the increase in population, this community northwest of Tucson along Interstate 10 is adding to its educational infrastructure with the construction of the Gladden Farms Elementary School.

Chasse Building Teams was awarded this big assignment from the Marana Unified School District, with the stipulation that the city’s newest elementary school

would be ready for students by the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year.

Construction on the 10-acre, state-ofthe-art educational facility located near Tangerine and Gladden Farms roads began in October 2015. The elementary school consists of a two-story central campus that is designed to provide a safe and engaging educational environment for an estimated 800 kindergarten through sixth-grade students.

Notable school features include an open-concept educational environment.

Rooms open to interior hallways via sliding glass partition walls to allow interaction between classes. Classrooms also have integrated technology such as projectors and interactive smart boards.

ustom security doors, a gas fireplace with chimney, closet doors with their frames, and high-end appliances are just a few of the items from a tear-down home in the Arcadia neighborhood that won't be tossed in a landfill. Instead, they’ll be carted off by Stardust Building Supplies to be locally resold.

Ted Reiff, President of The ReUse People (TRP) and Ken Hirsch, Regional Associate, and owner of Southwest Deconstruction Solutions, discussed the services they are providing an Arcadia property owner. Nearly everything in the 5,760-square-foot house and guest house will be salvaged except for the stucco and drywall.

TRP is a nonprofit organization that works with property owners to deconstruct, rather than demolish, their structures before rebuilding or remodeling. They've handled projects from small craftsman homes and condos to large commercial buildings, and even movie sets.

“The biggest project we’ve done was The Matrix set,” Reiff says.

The founders of TRP originally planned on a for-profit structure, but that required a large outlay of funds to get started, and would limit salvaged materials to those that could be resold at a profit.

However, by working with other nonprofits like Habitat for Humanity and Stardust Building Supplies, the deconstructed materials become a tax-

deductible donation for the property owner.

TRP provides an IRS-qualified appraiser for assessing the donation value of the salvageable materials; a bid from a TRP-certified contractor; administration support for the donation process that includes a complete inventory of the property; and arrangements to collect and distribute the materials.

Out of the thousands of property owners that have used TRP, only 11 have been audited, and each resulted in “no change” letters from the IRS. Using a qualified appraiser is important.

“People don’t realize you’re not donating the labor and some of the materials, like plaster, so you can’t deduct everything,” Reiff says.

The contractor that provides the actual deconstruction is usually a for-profit such as the one working on the house in Arcadia. Nonprofits like Stardust Building Materials in Glendale resell the materials at or below cost to the community. Some properties offer unique items that may not be available at your local Home Depot.

demolition and requires special tools and techniques.

Ever hear of a denailing gun? Yep, just as quickly as a carpenter drives nails into a frame, a worker can remove them from the salvaged lumber. Doors are left in their frames.

“The typical buyer of our material is a do-it-yourselfer, so we want the door to be able to be sold as pre-hung,” Reiff comments. “We also try to keep the vanity with the faucets and cabinets together.”

That’s right – everything including the sink stays as one piece whenever possible.

TRP prefers to sell the salvaged materials locally but with limited warehouse and lumber yard space available some items are available online – if the buyer is willing to pay the transport costs.

furniture and musical instruments but have become exceedingly rare.

They’ve also salvaged older, working, energy-inefficient appliances that can’t be resold in the U.S. but are sent to Third World countries such as Ghana, which typically lack appliances. And there has been a program for years to supply garagedoor panels to make houses for homeless families in Mexico.

Eventually, TRP hopes to have a wider distribution network than their current retail partners, including getting big box stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s into the resale market. But that may take some changes in policy.

In California, there are mandatory landfill diversion requirements for projects, which is a step beyond simple recycling goals. The City of Scottsdale and Town of Paradise Valley are considering similar ordinances.

Los Altos Hills, a city in northern California will move your plans to the top of the building permit list if you include deconstruction items in the new structure.

The permitting process there typically takes a year, so that's quite an incentive.

Currently, property owners can dispose of an entire building in a landfill.

For companies interested in adding deconstruction to their services, TRP offers a contractor certification program. Nearly all of the contractors that seek certification from TRP become suppliers for their network.

While Southwest Deconstruction Solutions’ single service is deconstruction, many contractors obtain certification so they can provide another service for their clients.

or Mike Eller, it was all about exposure to construction. When the budding photographer trained his lens on a branch bank in Alaska in 1975, he left the wedding photography and family photo shoots in the past. Eller had found his calling.

Before Eller could pursue his passion full time, however, he worked a stint at Air Photo Tec, an aerial photography firm.

That fun job allowed him to take images from aircraft and helicopters for oil companies and the state of Alaska. "All was great until the owner died suddenly, the company closed in a week, and we were all out of work,” he says.

Thinking he’d go back to previous woork, Eller took a risk and moved from Alaska to Phoenix in 1986. After a year working at Tempe Camera, he pursued his passion. “I took whatever photography assignments I could get, ranging from editorial to product and architectural,” he recalls.

The move paid off for Eller, as since then he has done architectural and construction photography. His clients include Coreslab Structures, Kitchell Construction, W.J. Maloney Plumbing, Lincoln Property Co., DLR Group, and Castle Steel.

Eller continues to work for a broad range of customers, and enjoys telling people his signature tag line, “When you need great construction photography, you need ME!”

Last year we generated $17 million with a staff of 100 employees. Our biggest customers for construction services are municipalities and Arizona Public Service (APS). We don’t do much residential, although we have a subdivision coming up in Sedona. We self-perform grading, drainage, and underground utilities such as water, sewer, storm drain, and electrical work - conduit installation only, we’re not electricians.

Describe the company's move in 1934.

My grandfather, H.C. Tiffany Sr., and his brother were grading contractors in San Jose, California. They came to Flagstaff for a rock job. They lost money on the project but stayed because they found other work.

Most of your projects are in Northern Arizona; what jobs are in the Valley?

We’ve done a lot of work at Palo Verde Nuclear Power Plant. We maintain a 37mile-long pipeline that provides all the water for the plant. The pipe ranges from

66 to 144-inch pipe. It’s a contract we bid every six months.

Describe building a golf course in Rocky Point, Mexico in 2007.

Getting the equipment across the border was the biggest challenge. People tried to bribe my Dad, Herb C. Tiffany Jr., for the opportunity to haul it, but he refused to take any kickbacks. He felt once he took one, it would never end. He ended up using a legitimate Mexican equipment hauler.

Getting the machinery back across the border was hard too. Once we came back, we learned the Mexican government had been looking for our water pull and service truck with the intention of confiscating it.

The other challenge was getting laborers.

We brought a bunch of guys down there but used local labor.

We got paid for that golf course, but not for the second one we helped build.

We probably wouldn’t work down there again unless it were for APS or if the clients pay us up front for the work.

How does Tiffany keep its veteran employees?

We're honest with our customers and employees. We try to do work right the first time – and our guys are proud of their work! It’s a family. And we know our clients on a first name basis. We include our topline foremen in our bid reviews, and again before we start the job. They’re welcome to change anything if they think it’s better for the company.

How do you meet tight deadlines?

Our foremen and superintendents running the project get the right operators and laborers for the job. It also helps to have people that have worked for us for many years. On the Palo Verde pipeline

job, the work has to be completed during a three-day outage, and we’re able to use the same crew repeatedly.

How does Tiffany excel at both flexible Alternate Project Delivery and Hard Bid projects?

The design phase involves the lead estimator and my brother, Herb Tiffany III, going over the job with a superintendent.

We prefer Alternate Delivery because you’re working with the owner and going over the costs of the “as-needed” work.

With hard bidding, a lot of times the low bidder made a mistake. My Dad used to say, "If there are more than seven bidders, at least one made a mistake.”

What are your current major projects?

We have a $1.7 million project with APS that includes demolishing and relocating asphalt and concrete, and either relocating or abandoning some existing underground utilities. We also have a CMAR with the City of Sedona for a drainage project that will last three years.

downfall of concrete is that it cracks.

For many owners, visible cracks make a concrete slab unacceptable, requiring costly repairs or removal. The design engineer and contractor must be proactive in developing methods that allow the concrete to crack in a controlled way that is not unsightly. This article discusses sawed joints and guides how to use them to avoid unnecessary problems.

A standard method to control cracks is to saw joints into the concrete. Called contraction joints, they must be done in an exact way to work properly. They do not stop the cracking but initiate the crack to form below the sawed joint, thus hidden from sight. The contractor, working with the design engineer, must make sure that the sawed joints are correctly installed.

Spacing of joints: There are several methods to determine the spacing of sawed joints. A rule of thumb is to use 24-to-36 times the slab thickness, with the spacing limited to 18 feet. These guidelines may need to be modified because of local conditions and materials, as I’ve observed cracking on shorter spacing than indicated by these references.

When to install the sawed joint: Most guidelines state that the joints should be installed 4-12 hours after the completion of the finishing operation. This guidance has been recently modified by ACI 301 (Specifications for Structural Concrete) to state, “start cutting as soon as the concrete has sufficient strength to prevent dislodgement of coarse aggregate…complete sawing within 12 hours.”

Timing is a critical item for installing sawed joints as delays often result in unsightly cracking with the possibility of expensive repairs and lawsuits. From my experience, this is one of the leading causes of initial concrete cracking.

Companies should document that concrete sawing occurred within the specified time.

Depth of the sawed joint: The sawed joint is to be installed at ¼ depth of the concrete slab, but not less than 1 inch. The contractor should be aware that some saws do not cut to the required depth, although it will likely not be a problem that contributes to concrete cracking. However, according to ACI 301, the contractor needs to submit this information to the design engineer for approval before construction.

However, this is seldom done. If cracking does occur on the job, the depth of the sawed joint can become a disputed issue if the contractor did not follow specifications or inform the designer that they will be using a shallower sawed joint.

Responsibility for joint spacing design: The design professional is responsible for joint spacing. “Joint locations or joint details not shown or differing from those indicated in the contract documents shall be submitted for review by the licensed

design professional,” ACI 318-14.26.5.6.2 states. “If the licensed design professional does not designate specific joint locations, the contractor should submit joint locations for their review.”

These instructions can lead to confusion on the job site even though it’s clear that the joint spacing is the responsibility of the project’s architect and/or engineer, i.e., the “licensed design professional.” If they do not specify a joint spacing, the contractor needs to be proactive and submit a joint-spacing plan for review well in advance of construction.

If the contractor does sawed joints they deem correct without review, they have taken on at least some of the responsibility for any concrete cracking. At the very least, this can become a contentious issue of who is responsible for the cracking.

Joint spacing for odd-shaped concrete: Here are some guidelines for determining a successful joint-spacing pattern for unusually-shaped concrete slabs.

1. Concrete should be installed with uniform width and length as concrete tends to crack in a square pattern.

2. When the slab has sharp corners, place saw-joints where you expect cracks.

3. When two members join, such as pavement and curb, the sawed joint should line up and not be offset.

The preconstruction meeting: Preconstruction meetings are important places to resolve many potential problems with sawed joints. The contractor should review any issues with the drawing, including joint spacing and the depth of joints. By addressing these matters before construction, the contractor can likely avoid costly delays, repairs, and litigation.

Putting the “Track� in Contractor Douglas Towne

ost contractors would be content to build a speedway, but not Ernest "Ernie" Mohamed.

The man sometimes referred to as "Big Mo" or "Big Ernie" by the newspapers had much greater aspirations: he wanted to run the show.

After his company, Ernie Mohamed Earth Moving and Construction, built South Mountain Speedway in 1948, Mohamed promoted races featuring jalopies, midgets, motorcycles, sprint cars, and go-karts at his mountainside track. He later brought roller derby, wrestling, boxing, and even the Shrine Circus to the venue.

How did Mohamed navigate the diverse worlds of moving materials and promoting events? "Ernie was hard working, very straightforward, could talk to anyone, and had a fun personality," recalls Larry Myers, who announced wrestling matches for Mohamed at Madison Square Garden on Seventh Avenue. "He could speak Spanish as well as English, which came in handy in both fields."

o one ever teased earthmover Ernest C. "Ernie" Mohamed about being "duller than dirt." When not transporting material or paving streets, the famed Phoenix contractor was a colorful figure who worked promoting auto racing, wrestling, and roller derby in Arizona after World War II. “Ernie was a bit of a carny and had his hand in many different types of events,” recalls former race car driver Jimmy Blanton.

Besides his Afghani-German heritage, unusual in Arizona during that period, Mohamed, or "Big Mo" as newspapers sometimes called him, had an unforgettable personal trait.

"He had a grip like a bear, he could bring you to your knees with a handshake," says Blanton, who for many years ran the Arizona Race-Mart. "That's the way he

conducted business, with a handshake.

If he said he was going to do something, he did it. His word meant something and he didn’t need a contract.”

The owner of Ernie Mohamed Earth Moving & Construction and promoter of various sporting events, he also operated, along with his wife Edith "Edie" Mohamed, the South Mountain Speedway and the nearby T-Bone Steakhouse.

Not bad for a kid who was born to Fatha and Purna Mohamed in Tempe in 1920. “Fatha immigrated to San Francisco from Kabul, Afghanistan and met his German wife, Purna, in Calexico, California along the Mexican border,” says Larry Myers, a longtime blade operator, of his uncle. The couple were married in Yuma and worked as farm laborers, relocating to Chandler, Tempe, and eventually Phoenix. fall 2016

"Although Ernie was born in Tempe, he grew up at 1708 South First Street, near the old Phoenix Municipal Stadium at the corner of Central and Mohave. This was the spring training home of the New York Giants from 1947-1963," says Myers. “My grandmother and I would park cars on an adjacent vacant lot during games for extra income.”

Ernie had a sister, Virginia, who married Larry’s father, Bob Myers, in the 1930s, and a younger brother, Bobby, who died in an industrial accident in 1942. His father, Fatha, died when Ernie was an adolescent.

He first entered the construction field after buying an old dump truck. “Ernie started filling it by hand with a shovel and selling dirt to those who needed it around Phoenix,” says Myers. “Ernie first used the vacant lot adjacent to his house to park his vehicles and later had an office near 24th Street and the Salt River.”

The company gradually purchased more trucks and grew into a bigger and more sophisticated operation, which included paving during the 1950s. His company's concrete stamps are still extant on Phoenix sidewalks. "My parents lived in the Townsend Park development near Central Avenue and Roeser Road,” Blanton says. “In 1952, Ernie’s company paved the subdivision and put in curb and gutters.”

Mohamed’s company did construction projects in Phoenix, Mesa, Tempe, and Quartzsite. They graded and paved a portion of Baseline Road in 1954, completed the Grand Avenue–Black Canyon Highway Interchange in 1957, and improved a “truck route” through downtown Phoenix along Grand Avenue and Lincoln Street in 1959.

A project on Interstate 10 near Quartzsite bankrupted the company in the early 1960s. "Someone sabotaged all of his equipment, and he had to buy new engines for them to finish the job," Myers says.

Mountain Speedway. He was a crowd pleaser, becoming so accident-prone that he earned the nickname “Crashwall” Chapel.

One of the most unusual events at South Mountain Speedway was called "Moto Polo," an updated revival of auto polo matches. Touted in advertisements as a combination of "polo, soccer, and a dash of Sunday driving…they featured 50-mile-an-hour-scrambles by tightly geared autos that can turn a full circle at high speeds in a 20-foot arena. The turtle design allows the cars to flip frequently without causing injuries."

Another ad read, “See the famous roll-over cars in hair-raising pile-ups, headon collisions, cars turning end over end.”

Blanton recalls the vehicles as old jalopies that had their bodies taken off, with roll bars from front to rear.

Moto Polo debuted on April 22, 1953, in a match pitting Crazy Wheel Kelly and his San Francisco Pirates against Woody Woodside's Hollywood Stuntmen. The three-car teams attempted to push, crash, or ram a seven-foot rubber ball through their opponent's goal posts.

South Mountain Speedway had regular events through 1954, but most racing ended after 1957. “Ernie started

Mohamed is perhaps best remembered for building South Mountain Speedway at the end of Central Avenue in 1948. Construction took place on 100 acres his mother, Purna Mohamed, a nurse at Maricopa County Hospital, purchased around 1942. Mohamed also had a construction shop, equipment, a crusher, and employees living on site in trailers above the track. His family lived nearby at 19th Avenue and Dobbins Road.

Employees raced at their boss’s track too. Don Chapel, a foreman at Mohamed’s firm, won the 1952 Bardahl Trophy, symbolic of racing supremacy, at South

for the District 1 Maricopa County Supervisor seat in 1960 and as an independent candidate for the Phoenix City Council in 1965. His wife, Edith, ran unsuccessfully for State Senate in 1956.

After his careers in construction and event promotion ended, Mohamed and his wife managed the T-Bone Steakhouse for more than 30 years. The steakhouse was located near their home on 19th Avenue south of Dobbins Road. "After Edie had retired it went to hell," Blanton opines.

"She went in every morning and cooked

the most delicious pinto beans with onion."

Ernie Mohamed died in 1996 at age 76. His wife, Edie, passed away at age 83 in 2003. The family is buried at Double Butte Cemetery in Tempe.

“Ernie wasn’t a fancy dresser and always seemed to have his shirt untucked,” recalls Blanton. “He never looked the part of a big-time promoter, but he sure put on a lot of events."

featuring stock cars under the NASCAR moniker, but it just didn’t quite fit with what was going on with racing in Arizona at the time,” Blanton says. “Still, he always had famous drivers in his races, a lot of them from California. I don’t know if it was because of the purses or the way he treated them.” Mohamed also promoted NASCAR events at the mile track at the Arizona State Fairgrounds.

South Mountain Speedway also featured the Shrine Circus, demolition, soap-box, and roller derbies. For roller derby, Mohamed built a wooden track in front of the grandstand. The speedway closed in the late 1960s.

As if his other activities weren’t enough to keep him busy, Mohamed secured a license to promote boxing in 1963. The Arizona Republic noted, “Ernie has a sound measure of promotional skill and a battery of hot dog machines and beer coolers he’d like to keep busy.”

As head of Arizona Sports Enterprises, Mohamed promoted a few boxing and wrestling events at South Mountain Speedway. Mostly, though, these events took place at Madison Square Garden at 120 North Seventh Avenue and the Sportatorium arena at 1717 East McDowell Road.

When the Mountain Roared: Phoenix’s South Mountain Speedway

checkered history, with most auto racing phased out by 1957. The facility continued hosting occasional races and events like roller derby, wrestling, boxing, and the Shrine Circus into the late 1960s.

Both the speedway and the mountain park it was named for had intriguing origins.

South Mountain, then called the Salt River Mountains, was scheduled to be sold by the federal government in 1924.

Phoenix appointed James Dobbins, Chairman of the Phoenix Planning Commission, to devise a way to preserve the area. After unsuccessfully urging Congress to declare the Salt River Mountains a national monument, Dobbins proposed that the city purchase the land for $1.25 per acre. Voters approved a tax increase to create Phoenix Mountain Park, later renamed South Mountain Park.

South Mountain Speedway was built adjacent to the park at the base of South Mountain on a 100-acre parcel that Purna

Mohamed purchased in the early 1940s. The speedway was jointly owned by Dr. Vaughn S. McGuire, head of State Speedways, and Purna’s son, contractor Ernest C. "Ernie" Mohamed, who built the facility. R.O. Steck of San Diego designed the speedway.

Although McGuire and Mohamed had initially looked to stage races at the Manzanita Park greyhound track, they felt the grandstands were unsuitable. "So we decided to build a track of our own, strictly for midget racing," McGuire told the Arizona Republic in 1949.

hoenicians treasure South Mountain, one of the world’s largest urban parks, for its scenic beauty and solitude. Especially popular are “Silent Sundays,” when bicyclists rule the roads as all motorized vehicles are prohibited one Sunday each month.

For many years after World War II, however, the 16,000-acre park was more noted for the exciting noise generated on racing nights at the nearby South Mountain Speedway.

The track opened to fill a racing void after the Phoenix Speedway, located near Thomas and 62nd streets, closed in 1948.

Declaring "Thru these portals pass the fastest cars, and the best drivers in the world," South Mountain Speedway held its first race on July 30, 1949. Eddie Phillips captured the main event, and Bobby Ball won the Trophy Dash. Jacque Mercer, Miss Phoenix of 1949, presented their trophies.

Although South Mountain Speedway had a fabulous start, the venue had a

brought in from California in 1952. Carroll rolled his vehicle, and died before arriving at St. Joseph's Hospital. The car was not severely damaged, however, and its regular driver ran it in the feature event later that same night.

South Mountain Speedway’s eventual demise began when the Arizona Jalopy Racing Association and its drivers defected to Manzanita Speedway in 1951. “The drivers were supposed to get a percentage of the gate, but the official attendance didn’t jive with what we could see in the stands,” Bloomquist says. “Some thought Ernie was giving the shaft to us, so we bolted for Manzanita.”

The jalopy group convinced Lawrence Meskimen and Rudy Everett to convert their struggling greyhound facility into a racetrack. “Al Carter, who worked for Arizona Sand and Gravel, was instrumental in getting the clay needed to create the dirt track at Manzanita,” Bloomquist recalls.

1950. He drove a 1934 Ford coupe, but its tie rod broke, sending him into the wall and flipping the newly constructed racecar. “It was a rough initiation, occurring on the first turn of my first lap,” Bloomquist laughs.

“Famed announcer Windy McDonald worked at South Mountain Speedway before going over to Manzanita,” recalls A.J. Westfall Sr. “He’d always say, ‘Don't forget to get your Soda Jacks and Cracker Pop,’ or something like that. I used to love the jalopy races and $100 Claimers.”

Barbara James has fond memories of the speedway, as her mother and future step-dad worked in the concession stand for Ernie’s wife, Edie. “Since my mom had to be there early, my friends and I got in free,” James says. ”I have great memories of watching the midgets, including drivers Art Bisch and Jimmy Bryan, followed by the jalopies.”

For all the thrills experienced at the racetrack, the facility had its tragedies. Orville Meggs suffered fatal injuries while competing in a jalopy benefit race for the blind in 1953.

Edwin Donald Goodwin, Jr. died when his midget-Ford hit the rear wheel of another car, launching his vehicle into a wall in 1956.

Thousands of tons of soil were moved to level the area. The track was a ¼ mile oval with a decomposed granite and clay surface. The accompanying grandstands held 3,700 fans. A three-foot high crash wall and a cyclone fence protected the spectators. "The pits are located at one end of the grandstand and the people will get a good view of the mechanics working on the cars as they watch the races," added McGuire.

The speedway was an immediate success. “There were good crowds,” says Larry Myer, who sold racing programs at the track as a kid. “We had standing room only for some races, with maybe 5,000 spectators.”

The venue spotlighted jalopy and midget races, but also included modified stocks, roadsters, and motorcycles. "Most of the drivers were weekend racers, not professionals," recalls Pam Lambert of the Arizona Open Wheel Racing Museum.

"When we had national divisions come through, that would draw even more spectators."

Chuck Runbeck, an ASU Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity brother to Mickey McGuire, who was Dr. McGuire’s son, worked at the speedway as a flagman.

“They told me to stand in the middle of the track and not move, as the vehicles would drive around me. I almost had a heart attack the first time I saw the pack of racers coming around the curve full speed at me!”

ceased regular auto races. These were but two of the era’s auto racing venues; the others included Blakely Field, Riverside Stadium, the Arizona State Fairgrounds, and other tracks in Glendale. “Some would run for a few years and close up,” Lambert says. “They are all defunct; even Manzanita Speedway closed in 2009.”

South Mountain Speedway limped on for another decade, hosting any event that Mohamed could promote at the venue.

After threatening to convert the property into a mobile home park, the City of Phoenix purchased the land and added it

Another habit that annoyed competitors at the South Mountain Speedway was the perks extended for favorite drivers. "They would hold up a race for Art Bisch if he was late arriving,” Bloomquist sighs.

The two tracks competed for six years.

“Wayne Weiler won the main event at South Mountain Speedway and hustled over to Manzanita and won a race later the same night,” recalls former driver Jimmy Blanton.

In 1957, South Mountain Speedway lost the competition with Manzanita and

to South Mountain Park in the early 1970s.

Although South Mountain Speedway has been gone for over a half century, its legacy lives on with famous drivers who honed their skills at the racetrack, including Bobby Ball, Jimmy Bryan, Bill Cheesbourg, Roger McCluskey, Art Bisch, and Wayne Weiler. All have been inducted into the Arizona Motorsports Hall of Fame and were major contributors to the Valley becoming a hotbed of auto racing.

"It was a different era; auto racing didn't have other professional sports to compete with for customers in Phoenix," Lambert muses. "It was just a few bucks to get in, and pit passes were probably five bucks. Safety equipment and insurance weren't major costs; which are huge bills for the speedways today."

Phoenix’s Fastest: Indy 500 Winner Jimmy Bryan Douglas Towne

high-profile media outlets; as he appeared on the Ed Sullivan television show and the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine. When questioned about his driving tactics for an upcoming race, Bryan replied, “Strategy?

Just put your foot on the gas and go as fast as you can.”

Nicknamed the “Arizona Cowboy,” the excitement Bryan generated at the speedways mirrored the state’s booming economy, making for a mutual love affair.

“Jimmy Bryan Day” was declared on separate occasions in both Phoenix and the entire state and he became the famous face of Arizona.

he biggest sports star to roar out of Phoenix in the 1950s was the auto racer, Jimmy Bryan. The charismatic driver did more than beat competitors to the checkered flag in the decade's biggest races. With his trademark El Producto victory cigars that he kept in a pouch sewn into his cockpit and chewed while driving, impressive physical appearance, and down home wit, the tough racer with a soft heart had a knack for winning auto championships and capturing the public’s adoration.

Bryan’s engaging, humorous personality was spotlighted in the era’s

Not bad for someone who taught himself to drive as a kid.

Born in Phoenix in 1926, Bryan became mechanically adept at a young age. He built his first vehicle by attaching wheelbarrow tires to a steel bed frame and powered the contraption with a onecylinder water pump motor at age 13. The machine could do an impressive 35 miles per hour but lacked brakes.

After graduating from Phoenix Union High School, Bryan joined the military during World War II to become a pilot. The conflict ended before he saw combat and Bryan returned home to race autos.

With no official driving experience to attract a sponsor, he competed in his modified Ford roadster at the old Thomas Road Speedway located at Thomas and 62nd Street. Bryan would drive his racecar to the track, remove the windshield and headlights, and duel other jalopies in evening races. Then he would reassemble the vehicle for the trip home to his parent’s house in Sunnyslope near Third Street and Hatcher.

Honing his driving ability, Bryan did well enough to move up to the midget class. He worked as a mechanic during the

day and often raced at night. It was a grueling lifestyle made tougher by his racing injuries. Bryan had his front teeth knocked out by a flying rock and survived a crash that broke his shoulder.

By 1951, Bryan’s success on the midget car circuit enabled him to move up to full-sized “Indy cars.” Racing alongside his Phoenix buddy, Bobby Ball in 1954, however, Bryan experienced the dark side of auto racing when Ball died in an accident.

Undeterred, Bryan continued racing and his career blossomed. He dominated the rough dirt ovals that were popular at the time, showing incredible physical stamina by winning two races in less than 24 hours in Indianapolis and Milwaukee.

He won the national driving championship in 1954, 1956, and 1957 and half his 34 starts over a three-year stretch.

“Jimmy Bryan was the quintessential race car driver of the 1950s and put Arizona on the map because of his tremendous popularity with racing fans,” says Phil Sampaio, co-author of My Hero, My Friend: Jimmy Bryan.

Bryan’s most memorable outing was the 1957 Bobby Ball Memorial at the Arizona State Fairgrounds to determine the national champion of Indy car racing.

was lapping another driver when he became squeezed toward the outside fence. Incredibly, Bryan flew off the track through a hole in the barrier created by an earlier accident. Kicking up dust behind a wooden wall, pieces of wood went flying as his car burst back onto the track in second place through another section of the damaged barrier.

Bryan took the lead while tossing out wood fragments from his open-air cockpit to win his third national driving championship. Afterward, the Arizona Republic called Bryan’s driving, “a lumber truck gone berserk.”

Bryan’s fame extended overseas when he journeyed to Italy in 1957 to compete in the “Race of Two Worlds” at the Monza

Autodrome. The 500-mile race matched the best American and European drivers.

Monza’s steeply banked track produced such high speeds that many drivers skipped the intimidating challenge.

Bryan won the event, becoming the first American triumphant in a major European race since 1921. Italian fans went crazy for the Phoenix driver, ripping at his clothing for souvenirs. One motorcyclist, so desperate for a piece of memorabilia, relentlessly pursued him until Bryan handed over his cigar stub to the fan who meticulously wrapped it in a spotless white handkerchief.

After his Monza victory, the only elusive triumph missing from Bryan’s racing resume was the Indianapolis 500.

second at the Langhorne track in Pennsylvania.

Tragically, in the first turn at Langhorne, Bryan’s car flipped violently, killing him at age 34. Survived by his wife, Luella, and two young daughters, he was buried at Phoenix’s Greenwood Memorial Lawn Cemetery in what was called the biggest funeral ever held in Arizona.

Harry Weger, an aspiring country singer who Bryan had befriended at Indy, wrote and recorded “The Ballad of Jimmy Bryan” later that year. The lyrics include: “Whenever racing people meet Or racing engines roar The name of Jimmy Bryan Will live forever more That cigar smoking, always joking, racer Jimmy Bryan."

Twice a year, Bryan’s legacy is honored by Jimmy Blanton, a former Valley race car driver who was named after Bryan. Blanton’s parents often doubledated with Bryan and his future wife, going dancing after Luella finished waitressing at the Coffeepot Restaurant.

“My mother decorated the graves of our relatives on Memorial Day and Christmas,” Blanton says. “Now that she’s gone, I continue her tradition and include Bryan’s grave, on which I also leave one of his trademark cigars.”

Always popular at the Brickyard, the funloving Phoenix driver was famous for tossing firecrackers around the interior of a lounge frequented by the racing community. Bryan had come close to winning Indy several times since first competing in 1952. He finished second in 1954, despite having the car's shock absorbers and accelerator spring break mid-race, and finished third in 1957.

His trip to the Brickyard in 1958 seemed especially promising as Bryan was driving the “Belond Special” that won the previous year. Bryan managed to avoid the opening lap, 15-car pile-up and rocketed to victory, acknowledging the applauding

crowd with his signature salute, throwing his hands in the air at the finish line.

After his Indy championship, Bryan took a well-deserved rest. "Now I hope he'll retire.... I'm not a superstitious man, but I've noticed that Indianapolis winners ever since 1911 have had a record of running into trouble when they keep on racing," his father was quoted in Sports Illustrated in 1958.

Bryan competed sporadically, finishing second at Monza in 1958, and came back to compete in two subsequent Indy 500s but had disappointing finishes because of mechanical problems. Although busy with commercial endorsements and speeches, Bryan missed the adrenaline of competition. On a whim, Bryan returned to dirt events in 1960 for the first time since his win in Phoenix three years previous. In a borrowed car, he qualified

mitty’s Big Town is a name from the past, built on a vision of serving customers more than they could imagine. Pizza was involved.

Yourland is a name for the future, created for tenants who want to make a difference beyond the bottom line.

Doughnuts are included.

Different centuries, same place – 16th Street and Buckeye Road.

Many people in the Valley remember Smitty’s, or Smitty’s Big Town, or Smitty’s Marketplace. There are Facebook pages dedicated to the store brought to Arizona

by Clyde “Smitty” Smith in 1961 and since heralded as the first grocery store to incorporate nonfood items and offer the variety of goods and services later expected at Wal-Marts, Fred Meyers, and Targets. It was said to be the first retailer in Arizona to be open on Christmas Day – not a popular move at the time.

“It’s a unique and amazing story on multiple levels,” said Sloane McFarland,

whose great grandparents Victorina and Bernardo Pasqualetti bought the land more than 100 years ago for farming.

Smith leased the land for his first store.

McFarland is the developer and artist behind Yourland.

McFarland, who thinks in terms of global implications, said his own concept is “happening on the site through Clyde and his vision.” He talks in awe of Smith figuring out how to bring supply chain economics to a neighborhood grocery store. “His ideas were incredibly transformative. For good or bad.”

“The creative inspiration of what this site is to me, is what it was,” McFarland said. People’s intentions behind what they do means something to this developer.

Smith died January 3 this year, just days before his 97th birthday. He and his store (sold in the mid-1990s) were well thought of. These comments appeared on “Smitty’s Big Town and Smitty’s Marketplace

It’s the sense of community, of village, reflected in these posts that McFarland strives for as he turns the 20-acre property near downtown Phoenix and Sky Harbor International Airport into an integrative space where artists, entrepreneurs, educators, restauranteurs, corporate and small-business culture, new citizens and others can steer the next 100 years on the site.

McFarland said the sense of history at 16th and Buckeye appeals to tenants, even as its Facebook page describes Yourland as: “A place of regional reflection: amenities, design, people, programs, spaces.”

“The intention of Yourland is to build a typical commercial development in conjunction with art interventions that, because of this intent, organization and operational reality, becomes a relatable, investigative and interactive project of Operational Land Art and Organizational Art,” according to the Facebook description.

Current tenants include the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Silvercar, Shell/Subway (the gas station is solar powered), SkyMall, Burger King, and Welcome Chicken + Donuts.

Amanda Odesho, assistant manager at Welcome Chicken + Donuts, gets the global/village intermix of Yourland.

“Everyone who comes in here talks about the other restaurants that have been here and the Smitty’s,” she said.

“People like the history of the place. … I like being close to the airport. I meet a lot of international passengers and that’s interesting – we’re one of the few restaurants near the airport,” Odesho added.

Mark Stratz, a vice president at commercial real estate broker Cushman & Wakefield, said the mystic of Smitty’s comes in handy. “In discussions with architects, tenants, brokers the talk is (often) about this being the first location of Smitty’s – definitely brings into the conversation the history,” Stratz said.

In what McFarland calls 3.0 Yourland, Stratz said, “It’s refreshing to have someone not interested as much in the bottom line but in building community.”

Eighty-thousand square feet already is leased, with another 30,000 square feet now available.

This philosophy particularly appeals to millennials, he said.

“Millennials think, act and work differently. They are community-driven, collaboration-driven.

The different message that Sloane has speaks to that,” Stratz said.

The current square footage available comes with amenities, “interesting entrepreneurial space – 18-ft. ceilings – ability to create a community versus being on the ninth floor of an office building,” Stratz said.

For Yourland, the right tenant is more important than just old any tenant to fill the space, both McFarland and Stratz said.

As McFarland put it in a video Yourland is about: “Leveraging natural assets and being sensitive to it and bringing about something that is way more impactful with its people and community.”

And, of course, the impact of Smitty’s lives on: Andrew Buchholz I LOVED Smitty's pizza as a kid. I didn't get it often because we didn't have much money but my goodness when I got it I was a happy boy.

ne of Arizona's most prolific postwar builders migrated to the state, not for its economic opportunities but rather its dry air. Jesse Robert (J.R.) Porter moved from Illinois to Phoenix in 1941 because sinus problems threatened his hearing. Accompanied by his wife, Marilyn, the 21-year-old apprentice carpenter left his job with J.L. Simmons Construction in Chicago.

Porter found work with Del Webb Construction on several war-related projects. "[Webb was] a very strict person.

He ruled that company with an iron hand.

He was quite a driver - perhaps that's where I got part of my drive from," J.R. told Southwest Builder in 1985.

In 1944, Porter gambled and started his company, despite having as his most significant asset a non-running pick-up truck. Porter wanted to be able to capitalize on the postwar building boom that he sensed would occur in the Valley.

The J.R. Porter Construction Company specialized in commercial construction.

Their first job was a church for the Pilgrim Holiness congregation at Third Street and Clarendon. Porter built the trusses and designed the building. To further save money, he mixed his cement purchased from the Builder’s Supply across Central Avenue. “They loaned me wheelbarrows to haul it in,” he later recalled.

When the building was razed in 1984, J.R. told the Arizona Republic, “The truss was so strong that they had a

tough time pulling it down. I’m kind of proud of that.”

His brother, James, assisted the growing company. Not every job was profitable, but Porter’s expertise increased in building better structures for less money.

Thomas Darlington contracted with J.R. Porter Construction in 1945 to build one of the earliest modern shopping centers in Phoenix. Located west of 24th Street on the south side of Camelback Road, Camelback Center opened the following year. The 15,000 square-foot project had on-site parking and featured specialty and art shops similar to another Darlington project in Scottsdale. The center was demolished in 1976.

J.R. Porter Construction’s signature red sign became familiar on sites around the Valley. Porter especially enjoyed working with the local architecture firm of Lescher and Mahoney, and built many of architect Edward Varney’s schools, particularly in northeast Arizona.

One of the more memorable jobs was building the Carnation Company milk plant at the northwest corner of Central Avenue and Indian School in 1951. “When we started the project, we had to chase the cows into another area so we could put up a fence,” J.R. told the Arizona Republic in 1984. “We used a farmhouse as our office for the job.”

Fittingly, the company was hired to expand the Carnation plant in 1978.

Two of J.R. Porter Construction’s most impressive jobs were rebuilding firedamaged buildings under strict timelines.

The first was when Arizona Biltmore suffered a fire in June 1973. The company

was hired later that same month and given 90 days to complete the restoration.

Working with Taliesin West Associates, the J.R. Porter Construction matched the aged copper roof, acquired mahogany wood for doors and door frames, and reinstalled the gold leafing on the ceiling. Porter’s employees worked 24 hours a day and were so efficient that hotel management fell behind in installing new carpet and furniture. The firm also devised a method to transport furniture to the hotel's second floor to avoid disruption in the lobby. The company completed the job in 82 days.

During the work on the Arizona Biltmore, the company had 11 other concurrent projects throughout Arizona.

Porter’s sons, Arthur and Robert, oversaw this construction, while J.R. checked on the

jobs using his airplane. Over the years, he learned the benefits of viewing the construction from the air and had purchased a small plane.

Seven years later, a deadly fire that killed 87 people occurred at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas. J.R. Porter Construction was among the many companies bidding on the $110 million rehabilitation project on what was, at the time, one of the largest hotels in the world.

A few years later, J.R.’s other son Bob, followed suit and created the Robert E. Porter Construction Company, which is still in business.

J.R. Porter Construction built its last headquarters at 11217 N. 23rd Avenue.

The red brick, two-story building also doubled as J.R.’s residence.

Many of the company’s buildings remain, including Riverside Hotel in Laughlin, Nevada; an addition to Phoenix’s

Carver High School; Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher; Flagstaff City Hall; the Phoenix City Library; and the Phoenix Zoo Elephant and Orangutan enclosure.

The company also built the Lath House at Heritage Square, which was described

by Robert Porter, the construction supervisor, “like a giant tinker toy project.”

J.R. called his restoration work at Heritage Square as well as the nearby Monroe School one of his best jobs. "It's

Not content to wait for an answer on his bid, J.R. sent a telegram to the MGM chairman: “As sure as Red Adair can put out oil well fires, we can restore firedamaged buildings.” Porter got the job, perhaps influenced by his daring telegram.

Another factor was the company’s record with Union Pacific Reliance Insurance Company, the same firm that had insured the Arizona Biltmore.

Much like the Arizona Biltmore project, Porter’s construction company completed the roughly seven-month project one day ahead of schedule. After completion, J.R. assured the public that the hotel went overboard on safety systems.

Porter’s sons, Art and Bob, worked for the company. Art, who started as a day laborer, eventually became president of the firm after ten years. Six months later, in 1979, he decided to form the Arthur Porter Construction Company. “I had gotten tired of thinking that if I ran the company, it still wouldn’t be mine,” Art told the Arizona Republic in 1979. “I just wanted my full name, not just my last name on my company.”

J.R. concurred about the affable split.

“We parted in harmony. After all, he was just doing what I had done 35 years ago – building his own company on his own name.”

The company also built the 122-foottall First Christian Church Bell Tower at 6750 North Seventh Avenue. The company received an award from the Arizona Chapter of the American Concrete Institute in 1978 for the Frank Lloyd Wrightdesigned structure.

Porter was a member of the Associated General Contractors of America, Arizona Chapter and served as president of the Building Contractors of Arizona. He died in 2008.

When asked about his success by the Arizona Republic in 1984, J.R. said, "The Lord has been good to me. I wasn't the smartest in this business, but I worked hard. I guess I'm not the easiest guy to work for, but I feel it's necessary to, at least, strive for perfection. When you use your name in the business, you're trading on the family's integrity."

As if to attest to his integrity, Porter mentioned to the reporter that he once went back to a job 11 years after completion to fix some steel welds that hadn't been done exactly right.

“We never wanted to be big – we just wanted to be good.”

Not long after his construction business was underway, Porter diversified into the lodging industry by starting a chain of Porter House Motels in 1960. The first motel was located in Show Low and built

by J.R. Porter Construction. Other motels were the Porter House in Flagstaff; the Porter House Sands in Blythe, CA, and the conversion of the Desert Sun Motor Hotel on Grand Avenue in Phoenix to a Porter House.

The chain further expanded in Arizona, California, and New Mexico according to company ads seeking investors. The Porter House chain prohibited tipping, allowed pets, and each motel offered a chapel.

Bob and Larry Myers: Two Generations of Blade Operators Who Made the Grade Billy Horner

ob and Larry Myers each worked for Ernie Mohamed and had careers running graders, but this wasn’t a father-son, mentor-protégé relationship.

“I rarely worked around Dad on a blade,” recalls his son, Larry Myers. “I picked up skills from other sources, but I was mainly self-taught.”

And that’s largely how his father, Bob Myers, learned the trade.

Bob moved with his family from Illinois to Phoenix in 1935. Just 16 years old, Bob became the primary bread winner for his family when he started work running a farm tractor at Central Avenue and Southern in 1937.

“My father earned one dollar a day and often worked seven days a week,” Larry recalls. “Bob’s earnings went to the family, except for the 50 cents he kept for gas and expenses.”

Besides driving a tractor, Bob also delivered ice. He met his future wife,

Virginia Mohamed, Ernie’s sister, on his route and they were soon married.

Bob joined the Army in 1944, during World War II. He drove a truck in the Pacific Theater, was wounded in 1945, and was discharged the following year.

Upon returning to Phoenix, Bob worked for Mohamed’s company from 1946 to 1960. Bob’s son, Larry, also got a job with Mohamed in the late 1950s as a parts chaser.

Larry’s first opportunity to operate machinery came during construction of Interstate 10 from Quartzsite east for five miles in 1959. “One morning after a dozer hand didn’t show up, I was asked to run Above: Bob Myers running a blade for Mohamed, 1958.

the machine,” he says. “The foreman told me, ‘As soon as you get on this thing and start pushing up material, the rest of us can go to work.’”

At the Quartzsite project, however, Mohamed's equipment was sabotaged, and a bonding company took over the project to finish the last two months of road work. “Someone had spiked the service truck, which burned up all the equipment engines,” Larry says. "They never arrested anyone. With all the projects and events Ernie was involved with, some people may have held a grudge."

The union requested that Larry become a member in 1960, but he didn't have enough money for the payment.

“They let me join the Local 428 for five dollars per week until my dues were met,” Larry recalls.

After Mohamed's firm had gone bankrupt, Larry ran a blade for many companies including Kelton, Tanner Brothers, Sanner Contracting, Isbell, Vinnell Corporation, and Markham. While working for Sanner Contracting, Larry spent almost five years finishing the ABC in Del Webb’s massive subdivision, Sun City West.

Of the many types of blades Larry operated, his favorite was the Caterpillar 140G model. He retired from the industry

after 15 years as a blade operator and supervisor for Construction 70 in 2011.

When not working, Larry raced many types of vehicles including jalopies, Figure 8s, Super Modified, sprinters, and late models. He raced from 1963 until retiring in 1988. His still enjoys autos and is refurbishing a 1940 four-door Ford and 1970 Mustang Mach 1 Fastback.

His father, Bob, never raced but enjoyed riding motorcycles out in the desert with friends. He retired in 1978 and passed away at age 79 in 1999.

“Bob was such a nice man,” says Jacque Myers, Larry’s wife. “He was married four times and just never wanted to live alone.”

successful Arkansas builder moved his family to Phoenix for his wife’s health in 1956. During the next two years, he finished his business obligations in Little Rock while commuting on weekends to be with his wife and their three children. After this transition, he began a new life and business in Arizona, constructing some of the state’s most stunning mid-century buildings.

Born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, John Joseph Dickmann attended St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas, where he received a degree in engineering. He subsequently went to work for Manhattan

Construction in Muskogee and married Elizabeth Brennan in 1934.

Dickmann stayed with Manhattan until 1946 as a field engineering supervisor and chief estimator. He received the Meritorious Civilian Service Award from the U. S. Navy in recognition for his work on wartime projects in 1944.

For his next venture, Dickmann partnered with Sidney Ditmars and Jack Pickens to form Ditmars-Dickmann-Pickens Construction, with offices in Muskogee and Little Rock. Upon the death of Ditmars, the firm became Dickmann-Pickens-Bond Construction Company.

After his move to Phoenix, he formed the Dickmann Construction Company and quickly established himself in the community as a trusted builder. Dickmann was a leader in the construction industry during the construction boom years of the 1950s and 1960s.

His company’s first projects were the Bank of Douglas building, built on North Central Avenue at Osborn Street for developer David Murdock, and the Pacific Mutual Life building, at Third Avenue and Flower Street, both designed by architect Charles Polacek. Other early projects included the Arts Building at Arizona State College and the Medical Pavilion at 29th Place and East Thomas Road, also designed by Polacek.

Dickmann successfully bid on several projects at Arizona State College (later Northern Arizona University) in 1961, which included the Technology and Applied Arts Center and the South Quad

Apartments.

His company also constructed the Lescher and Mahoneydesigned Arizona Industrial Commission Building located in the Capitol Mall.

Both in Arkansas and Arizona, Dickmann became involved in the community. He was a devout member of the Catholic Church and donated a significant portion of an addition to a girls’ Catholic high school in Little Rock.

Dickmann was active in the Serra Club, an organization of Catholic businessmen who fostered religious vocations. He was also a member of the Associated General Left: John Dickmann, 1930.

After moving to Arizona, Dickmann joined the Arizona Building Contractors Association and was its pesident in 1962.

He worked with the Sisters of Mercy, who ran St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix, and constructed a long-term care unit, an interns' residence, and an addition to their convent.

While running a successful business, Dickmann made time for his family. “On Sunday mornings we attended Mass at St. Francis and had breakfast afterward, often at Helsing’s at Central Avenue and Osborne Road, and read the comics together,” Marilyn Dickmann Barrows, his daughter,

recalls. “In the evening, my father enjoyed barbecuing, usually chicken, and making hand-cranked peppermint ice cream.”

To gain access to resources for larger projects, Dickmann, with the backing of his former colleagues from Manhattan Construction, formed ManhattanDickmann Construction Company with himself as president in 1961.

One of Manhattan-Dickmann’s first significant projects was the Weaver and Drover designed-Maryvale High School, located at 59th Avenue and West Osborn.

The company had the lowest bid, but the staff at the Phoenix Union High School District wanted to award the contract to the second lowest bidder, Mardian

Construction.

The dispute centered on whether Manhattan-Dickmann had the required two successive years of paying state and county taxes to qualify for government construction. The Attorney General ruled in Manhattan-Dickmann’s favor, and the school board awarded them the contract. The school opened, ahead of schedule, in 1963.

Phoenix voters approved bonds for projects in 1957, which included a new municipal office building and city council chambers to be located west of the CityCounty building at Washington Street and Second Avenue. Ralph Haver and Associates, working in collaboration with Edward L. Varney Associates, designed the

building. The Camelback Towers, now Landmark on Central, was completed in 1964.

The company enjoyed continued success in other parts of the state, building a health center, library, business administration building, dormitories, science building, dining hall, arts building, and education building at Northern Arizona University. In 1965, Manhattan-Dickmann built Sechrist Hall, an eight-story residence building.

Designed by Guiry, Srnka, and Arnold, it was the tallest building in northern Arizona.

Between 1962 and 1964 ManhattanDickmann built the Life Sciences Building and both the Palo Verde East and West dormitories which were the first high-rise buildings on the ASU campus.

The building had an innovative circular design including a roof supported by a compression ring in the center and a tension ring on the perimeter.

Manhattan-Dickmann also began work on a large apartment building on Central Avenue south of Camelback Road.

While not the prime contractor, Dickmann built the concrete structure of the 17-story

Manhattan-Dickmann won the bid for the Arizona State Fairgrounds Coliseum in July 1964. Designed by local architects Lescher and Mahoney and Place and Place of Tucson with T. Y. Lin & Associates as the structural consultant, this unique building, renamed Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum during construction, became the home of the Phoenix Suns basketball team.

Circular in the plan, the Coliseum had a saddle-like appearance when horizontally viewed. Its concrete roof, which spanned a clear space of 367 feet, was supported by a 12-foot-wide by 3.5-feet-deep concrete compression ring which was supported by 36 steel columns. Cables connected to the compression ring supported the individual concrete roof panels.

Dickmann developed innovative construction techniques for the project, which began in November 1964 and was scheduled to take a year. Labor disputes occurring throughout Arizona slowed progress on construction. Veterans Coliseum was still completed in time for its first show, the “Ice Follies,” in November 1965.

Midway through the Coliseum project, Dickmann and his associates agreed to dissolve their partnership after completing its projects in Arizona.

Afterward, Dickmann became a consultant and project manager for the Henry C. Beck Company. Beck had constructed the Guaranty Bank Building and the Financial Center on Central Avenue. In 1970, with Dickmann as its project manager, Beck began work on the

First Interstate Bank (now Wells Fargo) building at First Avenue and Washington Street. The 27-story office tower was the first commercial building constructed downtown in seven years.

After retiring in 1975, Dickmann continued his community activities with the Serra Club and the Bishop’s Building Commission for the Roman Catholic

Diocese. He served on the Parish Council of SS Simon and Jude Cathedral in Phoenix, and put in many hours of volunteer service at St. Joseph’s Care Center. Dickmann died in 2002.

he talented and creative architectural firm of Allan & Olsson, Architects, A.I.A. was active in Arizona from 1955 through the mid-1960s.

The company designed buildings mostly in the Valley and Prescott.

The company had two offices, with George Allan, Jr., based primarily in Prescott and Hugo Olsson, Jr. in Phoenix.

The firm also provided architectural services in Holbrook, Keams Canyon, Litchfield Park, Payson, and Willcox.

Building types included an impressive array of custom residential, commercial, municipal, healthcare, educational, and religious facilities.

The firm evolved to become Allan, Olsson & Scarbro from 1965-1967, and, later, Allan-Scarbro & Associates. Allan established his sole proprietor business in Prescott in the mid-1970s.

This column focuses on the work created by the firm Allan and Olsson for the initial 10-year period starting in 1955, a productive and innovative time. The company's imaginative co-founders, Allan

Architect’s Perspective: Allan and Olsson, Architects, A.I.A.: Modernists

Doug Sydnor, FAIA Doug_sydnor@gensler.com and Olsson, had many similarities before coming together. They were both pilots in World War II, educated in Colorado, moved to Phoenix in the 1950s, and supported AIA efforts.

Born in 1925 in Phoenix, Allan served as a pilot officer in the Army Air Force 1942-1945. He received a Certificate from the National Landscape Institute in 1947, and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Denver in 1952.

After graduation, Allan returned to Phoenix and became an AIA-Central Arizona Chapter member. He was active as an AIA volunteer in 1965-67 with the AIA School & Colleges Architecture Committee and, in 1966-68, on the Preservation of Historic Buildings Committee. Allan passed away in Prescott in 2006.

Olsson was born in New Kensington, Pennsylvania in 1920. His family moved west in 1923 where Olsson became a stand-out student at Glendale Union High School in 1938. He attended Phoenix College and Arizona State University before serving in the Marines as a fighter pilot from 1941-46. As the result of his actions at Guadalcanal, he was awarded the Purple Heart.

After earning a B.S. Architectural Engineering Degree at the University of Colorado in 1950, Olsson worked for Edward L. Varney Associates, and Ralph Haver.

Olsson joined the AIA Central Arizona Chapter in 1960 and served as its president in 1966. He became the Director of Facilities Planning at Pima Community College in 1974, where he stayed for 12 years. Besides his architecture skills, Olsson was an accomplished watercolorist, taught art classes, and was president of the Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild. He retired in 1986 and died in 2003.

As a child, my family socialized with the Olsson family, who lived nearby. As the kids played together, undoubtedly Olsson and my father philosophized about Arizona architecture.

The highlighted projects reveal Allan & Olsson’s contemporary designs.

The Sherwood Heights residential subdivision was built at the northeast corner of 56th and Oak streets in Scottsdale starting in 1955. This 79-acre development included 117 single family homes on half-acre lots.

The property had a gently rolling topography and natural desert landscaping. The developer, D.D. Castleberry and the architects, Allan and Olsson, choose to retain the natural desert landscape to differentiate it from the other typical post-war residential subdivisions with grass yards.

Entries with a pair of low, gateway features with sandstone walls and an overhead steel-framed sign defined the neighborhood. Homes were situated to work with the sloping sites, respect existing drainage washes, and often had an angular relationship with the street.

and Papago Buttes to the south. The California Ranch or Contemporary architectural style homes were constructed of adobe units, brick, concrete slump block, and board & batten. Roof options included asphalt, wood shingles, or cement tiles. The exterior wall and roof material choices provided an aesthetically varied character throughout the subdivision, thereby suggesting a semicustom residential development.

Salt River Project (SRP) sponsored the unique ’Electric Living Home’ program within the Sherwood Heights subdivision at a house at the intersection of 56th Street and Lewis Drive. This house was only one of two dozen homes throughout the United States that were completely powered by electricity.

The Prescott Municipal Building was constructed in 1962, as the community needed to consolidate scattered municipal

offices. Construction included smooth white walls, tall glazing, natural stone retaining walls, and a flat roof.

The ultra-modern architectural character reflected the desired "modern setting" for city offices. Upper exterior walls appear to float visually above the lower earth-bound stone walls. An outreaching breezeway structure visually anchored the composition to the street.

The contemporary building was somewhat controversial at the time, although Prescott architect William Otwell, FAIA, noted that it is a “good representation of its era,” and that “there was no looking back in time.”

Dignitaries attending the December 29, 1963, building dedication included U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater, Arizona Governor Paul Fannin, and Arizona Supreme Court Justice Renz Jennings.

acre lot at 321 East Pomona Road in 1958.

The 3,000 square-feet, award-winning Phoenix home design was based upon a predetermined planning grid, which provided an implied spatial order throughout.

The main entry is from the north and delivers one to an open and glazed space with a view to a patio. Left of the entry is the bedroom wing with the master bedroom suite and two bedrooms sharing a hall bathroom. Right of the entry are the kitchen, dining, and living clusters.

The residence received the prestigious 1961/1962 Western Home Awards - Award of Merit from Sunset magazine. Described as “distinctive and harmonious,” the home’s strong indoor-outdoor relationship included “A shaded patio matches every room including the kitchen. Floor to ceiling expanses of glass and sliding glass doors are used in lieu of windows."

The structure has an elegant, low horizontal profile with concrete slumpblock bearing walls, which are exposed to the exterior and interior. There is an exposed, tubular steel post and beam structure, full height glazing

throughout, an open two-vehicle carport, and a flat roof.

The home also received a Design Award in the Ninth Annual Honors Program sponsored by the AIA Western Mountain Region. In 1972, the home was expanded to include a loft studio for artist Ruth Frerichs and a family room.

The midcentury architecture of Allan & Olsson had an indelible impact on the state and set a high standard of contemporary design in Arizona. The attitude behind the firm's work is best said in a description of Olsson.

He had "an eye for the aesthetic, and an enduring spirit of optimistic curiosity."

Digging Through the Archives: Allis Chalmers Still Gets Good Grades William Horner

F

or two days I felt more like a museum curator than a heavyequipment operator. My task was not operating the latest high-tech, airconditioned blade but rather learning to run a half-century-old piece of machinery.

My project consisted of a finish-blade job that required grading underneath a

parking garage with a limited height clearance. The structure was high enough for regular traffic, but most of our construction equipment would not fit the tight space.

For three days, my company unsuccessfully searched for a suitable blade.

Fortunately, I remembered a 1966 Allis Chalmers blade that was owned by Ramon Candelaria and parked only two miles away (see the Fall 2015 Arizona Contractor & Community, page 88). After a few phone calls, a little hydraulic oil, and a new battery, Ramon gave us the go ahead to use his blade.

The next morning, I was excited but nervous about operating this blade for the first time. Although it possessed hydraulic power, the 50-year-old machine had unfamiliar controls, no articulation,

hours, I felt comfortable operating the old blade.

I was able to complete the grading with the assistance of some indispensable crew members. My biggest mental challenge was cutting next to the concrete with a stationary moldboard and reversed hydraulic control levers. Physically, my left quadriceps was sore afterward from working the machine’s hard clutch.

After finishing the project, a few crew members climbed aboard the blade and picked up the operating technique. The

vintage machinery attracted a lot of attention. The City of Phoenix job inspector, whose father-in-law worked construction, made sure to photograph the Allis Chalmers blade in action.

This project was an excellent opportunity to test my skills on vintage equipment. Not having the luxury of articulation or refrigeration made me respect the ability of former operators even more.

On the first day of the two-day project, Ramon stopped by to see his equipment in action. "We finished tons of jobs with this blade at RoBil Construction, and it made us a lot of money," Roman said proudly.

He purchased the blade in 1975 from Bill Bickes of Bickes Contracting.

After Ramon had given me a few operating tips, I climbed aboard the Allis Chalmers trying not to do anything embarrassing. Finally, after a couple of

This made me appreciate it many times more. I see how my father works hard in this Arizona sun, and monsoon humidity, and try to imagine all the men who go through this every day. Working hard so that their families can have the very best. It is only fair that I do my part by continuing my studies and striving to repay my father through success.

Mr. Holmes has over 40 years’ experience in the utility construction industry. His experience is blended between electric utilities from Journeyman Lineman into upper management and utility coordination and project management. Several years were spent developing equipment and technologies associated with utility construction and damage prevention.

Patrick has association management experience with UTCA and NUCA of Arizona as former executive director. He has a BS equivalent in Electrical Engineering. Currently, Patrick is employed with Team Fishel and oversees the electrical service replacement projects in the Phoenix metro area.

Arvid has been a part of Arizona's underground utility construction community for nearly his entire life.

As the third generation owner of SSC Boring, a Phoenix-based trenchless technology/vacuum potholing contractor, Arvid grew up in the business running projects in the field before taking over the estimating role in 1995 and now serving as Executive Vice President. Arvid brings his 30+ years of hands on underground and trenchless experience to many construction teams as a consultant, and to the Maricopa Association of Governments as a technical advisor on MAG Spec sections 602 and 608.

Outside of the office, Arvid keeps busy with his wife and four children ages 16, 15, 13 and 11. He is an avid outdoorsman, hiker, and hunter, as well as sharing his love of archery with youth through volunteer efforts with Saguaro Camp Cedarbrook where he serves as the vice-president on the board of directors. Arvid is also a USA Archery Level 2 certified coach and a USA Archery Judge.

ADOSH Happenings…

A

s the end of the federal fiscal year draws near, I wanted to share with all Arizona employers an overview of what is out and what is pending regarding OSHA standards. First please allow me to introduce myself, my name is Jessie Atencio, and I am an Assistant Director of the Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health state OSHA program. I oversee our Cooperative State Programs as well as our Consultation department. We actively have an Alliance with AZUCA, and thus we collaborate on articles like these as well as outreach training for their industry. Our office appreciates the relationship we have with the industry.

The first update concerns OSHA’s Recordkeeping and Reporting Rule and the new requirements on notifying ADOSH/OSHA. An employer is required to notify, or report to, ADOSH within eight hours if there is a workplace fatality, a rule that has been in effect for many years. The additional reporting rules require an employer to contact ADOSH within 24 hours if an employee experiences an

amputation, the loss of an eye, or if one employee is hospitalized due to a workplace incident or exposure. When ADOSH receives a report from the employer, a determination will be made regarding the need for further investigation by a Safety or Health Compliance Officer. The employer will most likely be contacted via a phone call, by a Compliance Section Supervisor to gather information about the incident; then the decision will be made regarding whether to handle it administratively or if an accident investigation will be pursued.

Our ADOSH office has been enforcing the requirement as April 2016.

Many employers will have to contact ADOSH for an incident involving an employee when they are formally admitted to a hospital or clinic. It is important to know definitions within OSHA’s Recordkeeping and Reporting Rule as an accident may be recordable but not reportable based on OSHA definition of types of injuries. So, I encourage all employers to either contact the ADOSH Consultation department for more information or attend one of our recordkeeping training classes. Classes

may be viewed on our current ADOSH Advocate ica.state.az.us/ADOSH/ADOSH_ Newsletters.aspx A second important update is OSHA’s Construction Confined Space Standard (29 CFR 1926.Subpart AA). For many years construction companies have turned to the General Industry Confined Space Standards (29 CFR 1910.146) for compliance guidance to ensure safety while working in the numerous and varied confined spaces found in construction. If you are familiar with the GI Confined Space Standards, most of the Construction Confined Space Standards may not seem new to you at all.

There are, however, some new requirements that must be met by General Contractors and sub-contractors, separately and collectively, to prevent injury or illness to employees who are exposed to confined spaces. The multiemployer citation policy is discussed to ensure all employers are communicating the hazards and entry procedures during the confined space entry.

A third update focuses on OSHA penalty adjustments. OSHA’s maximum penalties, which were last adjusted in 1990, will increase by 78%. Going forward the agency will continue to adjust its penalties for inflation each year based on the Consumer Price Index. OSHA states that the new penalties will take effect on August 1, 2016. So as a state plan OSHA program what does this mean for Arizona?

Arizona has an approved plan and must be at least as effective as the federal OSHA program. Therefore it is important employers know in our State that the following penalties will be seen in the future: Type of Violation

To guide the OSHA and ADOSH staff on the implementation of the new penalties, OSHA will issue revisions to its Field Operations Manual by August 1, 2016. To address the impact of these penalties increased on smaller businesses, OSHA and ADOSH will continue to provide penalty reductions based on the size of the employer and other factors. For more information visit the following website https://www.osha.gov/penalties.html Finally, there is one standard that is promised to be released by the end of this federal fiscal year. That standard update if for the General Industry WalkingWorking Surfaces Standard or 1910.21 – 1910.30. The standard has been a work in progress from the current standard enforced, but OSHA has not released an official date. When it comes, you should be aware that ADOSH has six months to adopt. At that time information will be shared through stakeholder meetings, trade association meetings, the ADOSH Advocate, or by email blast.

Digging for Success:

Tyers Contracting

W

hether laying underground utilities or sport-fishing deep in the ocean, the late William “Bill” Tyers enjoyed discovering what lies beneath the surface.

Tyers, along with Dick Kaufmann, launched Tyers Contracting in 1983. The company performed underground utility installations for private, commercial, and civil projects statewide.

His subterranean passion carried over to his free time. “He loved being on or near the water; deep sea fishing was one of his passions,” his son, Billy Tyers, says. “He participated in the Bisbee Black and Blue Marlin Tournament in Cabo San Lucas for more than 15 years.”

Ironically, it was dissatisfaction with what was occurring above-ground that eventually inspired Tyers to start his underground utility company.

Tyers was born in Los Angeles in 1940 and came to Phoenix seven years later with his parents, William J. and Helen. “They moved to start a sewing machine repair/distribution business,” Billy Tyers says. “Helen was also a physical therapist and nursing assistant.”

Growing up in Phoenix, Tyers learned piano, pitched in Legion League baseball, played football, and graduated from West

High School. After a year at Arizona State, he joined the Marine Corps and was stationed at El Toro in California and Memphis, Tennessee until honorably discharged. He subsequently returned to ASU and graduated with a degree in business/marketing.

Tyers rose to become a superintendent for a local Phoenix utility contractor. “He became increasingly frustrated with his employer due poor customer service and an overall lack of integrity in products and services they provided,” says his son. “He knew that he could and would do better.”

The company he subsequently launched, Tyers Contracting, was a familyrun business. “Bill and Dick’s kids all worked at some point throughout the more than 20 years they were in business,” recalls Billy Tyers.

Besides underground utility installation, Tyers Contracting specialized in hard dig projects utilizing rock trenchers and other equipment unique to excavating rock. “At one point in the late 1980s Tyers owned one of the two largest trenchers in the United States,” says Billy Tyers.

president in the late 1980s. “He looked back fondly on attending the NUCA conferences to represent Arizona, his peers, and his business,” says his son. “Bill Tyers cared very much about the construction industry, and he always gave 110 percent to his company and the community without seeking accolades or awards.”

Five years later, Luis bought out Tyers’ interest, though he remained as a consultant until NPL Construction Co. acquired the assets in 2011.

Working as a consultant allowed Tyers more time to devote to fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed attending the Diamondbacks, Coyotes, and Cardinals games and was an ASU football season ticket holder for more than 40 years.

He passed away from a five-year battle with cancer in 2015 at the age of 74.

His peers described Tyers as one of the last "handshake" guys, where his word was his bond, and he always followed through on his commitments. “I had the unique pleasure to work in the same industry as Bill Tyers and was astounded at the admiration for my father when they would recognize my name,” says his son.

“When you first met him he could be a little intimidating, but once you got to know him, he was quite caring and generous,” Billy Tyers reflects. “He took an interest in people and always looked for ways to help them better themselves.

Growing up, he would always ask my sisters and my friends, ‘What are you plans, where are you going to school, have you considered the military?’ and he was genuinely interested in mentoring them.”

A sampling of condolences left on Bill Tyers' obituary page echoes his son's sentiments.

“Bill and I played golf together many times with more laughs than talent, but we enjoyed every round. While we were fierce business competitors, we left that at the door during social times and especially during conversations about our Sun Devils.” - Dick June “Bill was a relationship gem in my life.

Sure, he was a great boss, an astute mentor, and businessman. I will remember more his generosity and his loyalty to people. I so enjoyed our friendship and his ‘devil may care’ attitude towards life.”
