MILE HIGH EYE CANDY “NOW YOU CAN FLY ON ANY ROAD” ECOSSE FOUNDER’S EDITION ECOSSE’s exquisite two-wheeled creations Set up In a non-descript building south of Denver, ECOSSE Moto Works turns out some of the world’s most extraordinary machines, one by one.

When you enter the unassuming concrete fortress you’re greeted by an eclectic collection of motorcycles – from a vintage Seeley race bike to a Gilera, note the BSAs, Nortons...and a championship carbon-fiber Bimota SB8R. Sitting amidst this vast collection in the greeting area, is the first production of the ECOSSE Heretic (serial 01) takes center stage under a billet ECOSSE sign.

The massive sign was a gift from an appreciative owner – a matching one is prominently displayed in the customer’s immaculate garage alongside this prized motorcycle. More retro, in the underground machine shop than a glitzy design space, ECOSSE Moto Works’ is home for an homage to the handcrafted motorcycles that take shape in this Rocky Mountain headquarters.

Access to this fortress is limited – and is by appointment only to customers who have placed deposits – to protect the privacy of high-profile customers as well as ensure the proper attention is paid to each customer. Owners fly in to spec their colors and finishes and to determine the proper setup for their desired riding position and favorite type of riding.

Don Atchison, co-founder and designer, is a speed freak who grew up riding dirt bikes as his main mode of transportation in rural Washington State.

The downhill ski racer, motorcycle road racer and mechanical engineer began thinking about his version of the ideal street bike back in the ’90s after his tastes changed to V-Twins while getting his MBA. Describing the void in the market, Atchison said, “There was no motorcycle equivalent to the European performance automobiles or streamlined fighter jets that I favored.”

Napkin sketches were transformed to CAD drawings and, together with his wife Wendy, Atchison formed ECOSSE in late 2001.

– strongly influenced the form-follows-function nature of the company’s first model. The Heretic, so named for its aversion to all things standard and its defiance of classification was perfected in 2004 after three complete prototype iterations. X-3, the final prototype, named in true experimental aircraft protocol, was the basis for the following limited-production models. Customers included high profile celebrities, rock stars, athletes, enthusiasts and plain-old motorcycle collectors. “We matched one bike to a customer’s race car, another waited for the serial number of his jersey, and yet others have placed their names on waiting lists for the next models – without knowing what type of bike we will introduce next and no matter what the cost. But the ultimate compliment is hearing guys say they need one Heretic for the living room

and one to ride,” Atchison says with a smile. “Some of our customers have large collections and we often hear that The Heretic becomes their motorcycle of choice.” He continues, “Sure we’ve built bikes strictly as showpieces in companies’ lobbies or as sculpture in someone’s home.

But when that bike moves from the living room to the garage because it just has to be ridden – that is truly rewarding and what our bikes are all about.”

While the customers are sold so is the media. ForbesLife declared The Heretic “Bike of the Year” and made it part of its coveted twelve Ultimate Gifts. The Heretic was the motorcycle selected as multi-winner of Robb Report’s prestigious Best of the Best award.

Men’s Vogue commissioned a special one-off limited edition.

beauty that doesn’t corrode,” Atchison explains. In that vein, the titanium tubing is kept natural without any coating and is simply brushed by hand to a subtle sheen. Similarly, the carbon-fiber bodywork weave is exposed then saved for a clear coat providing a UV protection and a hand- painted old-school pin stripe.

Now entered into the realm of desire, is the company’s super exclusive FE Ti XX (Founder’s Edition Titanium XX).

With its production being capped at only 13 examples, it shares some of the geometry and styling of The highly successful Heretic earlier mentioned, this model is a decidedly different kind of beast.

The power-to-weight ratio of this machine is mindboggling. The supercharged, intercooled and fuelinjected system boasts a staggering amount of torque and power – >225 hp and >200 ft-lbs of torque at the rear wheel at sea level. While the carbon-fiber bodywork and wheels, titanium chassis and aerospace-grade aluminum keep weight to an impressive 440 lbs.

As with the chassis, the powerplant is built in-house.

“I’ve been working on this bike for quite some time and I knew I wanted an insane amount of power. So we developed our own 2100cc dual-cam fuel-injected billet engine, designed a supercharger drive system around the Rotrex centrifugal supercharger unit and consulted Bell Intercooler to design an appropriate unit.” But it wasn’t without difficulty. The hardcore R&D process took 18 months. “Nothing was available so we had to start from scratch: All of the mechanical parts had to be designed, created and tested. We had to source a blank ECU (electronic control unit) and perform all the programming then complete systems integration, dyno testing and road testing to make it all work together.” The hard work and persistence paid off. The stunning, supercompact transmission is cut from solid billet. Shift throws are short with positive engagement. The ratios are good, too, with an overdrive top gear to keep it all smooth. The

An evolution of the Titanium Series RR, the chassis and entire exhaust system are handcrafted from titanium. Titanium is notoriously expensive hence the material , as well as being difficult to source, manipulate and weld – and indeed the ECOSSE team of welders are specially qualified to turn this exotic material into frames and exhaust parts.

The immense backbone and elaborate trellis frame will take two skilled welders more than 30 days to complete just one chassis.

So why take on such a daunting challenge? “I’ve always been fascinated by titanium. From its extreme fatigue resistance to high-yield strength to its sheer

fully adjustable Öhlins forks and rear shock – tested by an AMA champion on the twisty roads of North Carolina – are exactly the same as you’ll find on much of the MotoGP grid. While the brakes are custom-made ISRs, with six pots on each of the radial-mounted calipers and adjustable levers to control both the amount of braking power supplied and the rider’s reach. Clearcoated carbon- fiber BST wheels increase hp and torque by 5 units each and reduce overall weight by 6.5 lbs.

The FE Ti XX may look like a delicately designed, two-wheeled beauty, but press its glowing red starter button and an entirely different beast presents itself. An explosive, deep roar erupts from its twin exhausts and the untamed sound – even at idle –she belies a thrilling ride from stoplight to stoplight or through the twisty canyons. The bike’s appearance may be uncompromisingly sporty, but its riding position is akin to sitting in a chair, thanks to Atchison’s disdain for achy wrists and backs.

Comfort was central to the design objective. To that end, the riding position and foot controls are adjustable, the seats are filled with cushy gel, the crankshaft is removed and balanced for reduced vibration, and the dampened urethane handlebar system reduces hand and arm fatigue. What’s truly inspiring is the distinctive look of this fine machine featuring bespoke components and exquisite details. Carbon fibre plays an important role in the detailing for most parts on this bike.

Even a personalized handlebar clamp is machined with the serial number and customer’s individual message.

An intricate laser-cut logo badge is affixed to the carbon-fiber tach shroud. The complex upper triple tree is stepped down to allow adjustability for the the forks and houses the starter button, warning lights and tachometer. Bezel-like notches are machined in the headlight ring and exhaust hanger. The required DOT symbols and verbiage are machined into the controls. Poured urethane dampers and custom-made bolts carefully constructed in-house. The striking machine pattern of the primary cover, chain basket cover and air filter. And too many nifty touches to mention including the telescopic lunar-landing side stand which adjusts to offset the fork and rear shock flexibility, the programmable tachometer which records 0 to 60, 0 to 100 and quarter- mile times, and the dual starter button/oil pressure indicator.

(There are three models in the Titanium Series line, ranging in price from $200,000 to $300,000.)

Matching Titanium Timepiece It’s only fitting that a motorcycle accessorized with jewel-like welds and artistic details as fine as this bike come with a matching timepiece. So ECOSSE worked closely with French boutique watchmaker BRM – known for its motorsports-inspired industrial timepieces – to design a special limited-edition to perfectly complement a limited-edition Titanium Series RR motorcycle. A sleek yet substantial automatic chronograph was selected to compliment the artistry. The chassis tubing was shipped to France to ensure the exact titanium finish for the huge 48mm hexagonal bezel. Black stainless steel featuring ECOSSE’s gargoyle logo and carbon-fiber accents complete the unique look. A skeleton back showcases the watch’s inner workings much like the Titanium Series’ engine is exposed.

Stitching on the smooth, rubberized leather band echoes the same detail on the streamlined motorcycle seats. “We like to surprise our clients from time-to-time,” said Wendy Atchison, the company’s marketing and PR executive.

And it’s especially poignant for this ultra rare model.

Despite the heavy workload and wearing multiple hats as President, Designer and Chief Engineer, Atchison still test rides every one of his bikes and tries to personally deliver each finished motorcycle. “An extreme focus on customers is part of our mantra. I go over the bike with each new customer and they are also given my cell phone number to contact me directly with any question the may have– no matter how insignificant they think it might be. We want the ECOSSE to truly be their go-to bike of choice.”

Even with its worldwide status as the premier luxury marque of limited-production motorcycles, Atchison and company keep a relatively low profile. “We don’t attend many events – we just can’t with the current backorder list. It’s nice that the bikes have a great following as it allows us to focus on our passion without having to leave the Bat Cave much.” Except, of course, to ride.

SETTING THE NEW STANDARD Gulfstream G650 ER

Already being the fastest jet in Gulfstream’s current line up, what with the G650 having scooped up a world speed record in 2013. The $65 million business jet, which seats up to 18, is Gulfstream’s best-seller; with well over 200 units of the jet being ordered or sold since its inception in 2012.

And, when the G650 made the trek to India for the aviation show in Hyderabad , it set a new record for a New York to Mumbai flight, when it reached Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in just 13 hours and 49 minutes, showing an average cruise speed of Mach 0.85 for the 13,177km flight.

GULFSTREAM G650 ER

Little modification work is needed to turn a G650 into a G650 ER, given that Gulfstream left sufficient space and strength in the wings to add another 4,000 pounds of fuel, resulting in the maximum ramp weight rising an equivalent amount, to 104,000 pounds. While the G650 ER shares the G650’s cabin, avionics and systems, software for the fuel-quantity measuring and flight management systems has been updated to account for the extra fuel and performance gains. EASA certification of the G650 ER is still expected in 2016. Yes, Gulfstream has made it fly farther, and faster, and under no circumstances have they reduced the reliability and safety features of their aircraft.

To satisfy the requests with the new G650 ER, showcasing an even more massive cabin space boasting a (102 inches wide by 77 inches tall) space and the most advanced cockpit in the company’s fleet.

It is a new structural design, including new wings and new fuselage, being built with new processes to achieve enhanced aerodynamics. Being that the aircraft is powered by the Rolls-Royce BR725 engine, which Gulfstream says produces 16,900 pounds of thrust at take-off and allows for fuel-burn levels comparable to those of smaller aircraft.

The G650ER travels near the speed of sound with a max speed of Mach 0.925. At Mach 0.85, it can carry 8 passengers boasting a range of 7,500nm (13,900km) at Mach 0.85—500nm more than the standard G650, which entered service two years ago. This extra mileage allows the G650ER to connect to more city pairs than its stablemate, such as Hong Kong to New York and Los Angeles to Melbourne nonstop.

YIGAL OZERI:

AN ART DEALER’S FIND

In 2009, I visited 24 art fairs in Miami that featured 200 dealers exhibiting 50,000 artists; I found just three paintings that caught my eye in three different booths, each made by the same artist—Yigal Ozeri.

During these intense viewing weeks, I am always looking to discover new and talented artists who are rare, few and far between. So, who is YIGAL OZERI—the only artist to seriously get my attention—and in three separate places? I had discovered, a bit belatedly, the extraordinary work of this Israeli-born American artist.

Back in New York after the fairs, I called his dealer in Chelsea and arranged a studio visit. Another WOW! Ozeri’s gigantic talent is complimented by a gigantic personality.

Most of the Photorealists, while brilliant in their work, are quite reserved and calm in their personalities.

NOT Ozeri, his presence is as exciting as his brush! I began collecting his work over the next few years; and in 2014, Ozeri, his previous dealer and myself mutually agreed that he would join Louis K. Meisel Gallery.

Since coining the term “Photorealism” in the late 1960’s, I have collected artwork and developed the careers of artists working in this genre. Over the past fifty years, I have published four volumes on the subject with Abrams and curated countless exhibitions that have solidified its place in art history.

All realism from the beginning of time has documented and reported on faces, places and things. Photorealism embraces these subjects in a totally new, postmodern way, particularly in its composition, technology and presentation. Photorealism is the ultimate form of realism in terms of technical precision, which is made possible only through use of the camera. No artist could have envisioned the portrait imagery or execution as created by Chuck Close. There were never still lifes that began to approach what Charles Bell showed the art world from the 1970’s to 1990’s, and the depictions of New York City in Richard Estes’ work in the latter part of the 20th Century brought a totally new dimension to how landscape painting was perceived.

All significant new art must be aware of, and take into account, all previous innovations or advances in order to create new developments from which future

artists may benefit. In the 21st century, who will be credited with the advancement of and the knowledge presented by the three artists mentioned above?

Ozeri is not only the most impressive figurative painter in Photorealism, but in the contemporary art world. His work rejects the cool, unemotional, satirical, colorless, formalist, minimal and sarcastic. It is imbued with QUALITY and BEAUTY—words that are loaded with meaning and that are too often rejected because very few can or have ever achieved what those words determine and describe.

On a technical level, Ozeri’s skill for making a painting appear photographic surpasses anything I have seen, but neither camera nor photograph can capture or portray the results he achieves. Unlike most artists who use paint on paper, Ozeri’s works, sometimes measuring 8 x 10 feet, are in oil paint rather than watercolor or gouache. Rendered in oil onto a delicate surface, the exquisite detail he attains is unequalled by other artists.

Ozeri always depicts his subject in the natural world, but that environment—be it seascape, landscape, forest or garden— is an illusion created by the shallow depth of field wherein the figure is sharp and the background is blurred. This compositional choice both heightens the appearance of photography and focuses the viewer’s gaze to his female subject. From the very small faces on canvas of Priscilla, to the larger than life-size faces of Lizzie Jagger smoking, to the Chuck Close-scaled masterwork of Olya, Ozeri’s subjects interact with and become a part of their surroundings.

Ozeri runs his studio in a tradition similar to old masters.

He accepts applications from artists to work “in the studio of…” where he teaches and employs them in his methods.

In my last 50 years as an art dealer, I have been approached by thousands of artists who aspire to be included among the Photorealists.

Ultimately, I only find five per decade that I would like to collect and potentially represent.

Presently, Ozeri is the most exciting addition to this group.

The true die-hard watch aficionado is no doubt familiar with the Witschi machines used by historical watchmakers to measure the precision of each mechanical watch movements.

Introducing the new Lepsi Watch Analyzer which offers the same functions but in a portable more for the luxury format, that is a perfect fit for the enthusiast.
