Speed Through the Season How do you express your passion for motor sports? Some people watch races on TV, while others buy a race car and learn to race.

TANGIBLE INVESTMENTS Win, Place, or Show The 1956 410 Ferrari Superamerica Retailing at an unheard of $16,800 upon its initial release in 1956, the Ferrari 410 Superamerica series were custom built for just thirty-five lucky owners before they were discontinued three years later in favor of the 400 with its smaller engine. When built, the Ferrari 410 Superamerica series offered the highest level of sophistication, exclusivity, and performance available.

Being hands-down the most powerful, sophisticated and, of course, exclusive Ferrari of the 1950s, the 410 has been hunted down by collectors whenever one becomes available. First appearing at the 1955 Paris Auto Show with a chassis that exposed the “long block” Type 126 Lampredi 60° V12; this single-plug variant of the same Lampredi-designed engine that powered Ferrari’s biggest and baddest race cars of this time period.

The Superamerica added a hood scoop, kicked up the rear fenders and added larger fender vents to its design. Though its chassis shared features with others designed by Pinin Farina, the 410 was a part of a small group with unique style and flair that included prominent tail fins popular with hotrods in 1950s Americana.

The 410 also had a best-recorded time of 5.6 seconds in a zero-to-60 sprint (according to Sports Car Illustrated testing) an impressive feat for the time and for many years afterward.

Despite its heavy weight, the car performed that well thanks to its enormously powerful engine and aerodynamic design.

Several upgrades evolved during three production cycles, including a wheelbase reduction from 2800 mm to 2600 mm and relocated spark plugs potentially unnoticeable changes to the non-enthusiast, but Ferrari purists list each series as a uniquely different car, making each highly sought after.

One of these prized vehicles went up for auction at Gooding & Company in Scottsdale earlier this year, selling to a private collector in Pennsylvania for $3.3 million.

In order to ensure a 9-day operating reserve, displayed at midday, the Giga Tourbillon has been given a pair of spring barrels on the front, and another pair of spring barrels on the back (4 in total) in contrast to traditional tourbillons which generally have only one or two. Each pair of spring barrels are mounted in series and then connected in parallel which makes it possible to double the operating reserve and the power of the movement and provide the almost constant force needed for the Giga Tourbillon to operate.
