and plunge pools, in luxurious outdoor living spaces—most often in residential gardens. “I love meeting people with a dream and realizing it with them,” says Lucas Congdon, who founded Lucas Lagoons in 2003. “I love that moment when we turn the waterfall on and they throw their arms around me in delight.” Raised in Vermont, Lucas built up his skills by helping his mom with her landscaping business. He had a knack for it. “I had so many ideas,” he recalls. “I wanted to combine stone masonry, landscaping, and pool construction, so I decided to move to Florida, where I could work outdoors all year round, and learn on the job.”

And that’s exactly what he did, researching local plants and suppliers until he was ready to start his own business. In time, this venture blossomed into Lucas Lagoons. As well as pools and waterfalls, the company today creates gazebos, patios, seating areas and courtyards—all using natural stone.

Lucas describes it as a “turnkey company” that manages landscaping, lighting, and everything in between. Business is booming, and the firm has gained a reputation for creativity and excellence.

Over the past decade, Lucas Lagoons has won more than 35 awards, and counts itself a member of both the Florida Swimming Pool Association and the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals.

their budget and vision. Once he and the client have agreed on the final design, the process is refreshingly swift. “We don’t take on a hundred jobs at the same time—our clients get our individual attention,” says Lucas. Working with eight full-time employees, as well as trusted specialist subcontractors, a project is typically completed in as little as six weeks.

Natural approach What makes Lucas Lagoons stand out— other than its turnkey service—is the company’s focus on natural stone. “Most of my competitors use artificial

“On a recent project for a couple who had spent time in Costa Rica, we used a lot of plants that are native to that region around the waterfalls,” says Lucas. Then there are clients’ unique circumstances to consider. “People with kids, for instance, often want to incorporate waterslides into the design,” he says. “Some clients meet me with a folder of things they like, others are looking for advice and inspiration.” The latter is a commodity that Lucas has in spades—a good deal of which still derives from his early days in the industry. “My experiences with my mom were so valuable,” says Lucas. “And she is still working with me to this day, at the age of 61.” Understandably, Lucas is determined to do her proud, delivering the best possible service. “My clients work hard every day and look forward to kicking back, making their home their dream vacation spot. I have loads of ideas to help them achieve their dream.” ________

ARTISTIC LINKS HONORING THE CULTURE AND TRADITIONS OF JAPAN. Wearing the right cufflinks may not make the man, but they certainly add the perfect finishing touch to his attire.

As Paul Dyson, curator of an exhibition called On The Cuff, a celebration of the history of the cufflink, so aptly put it, “Every properly dressed person wears cufflinks, No one wants to invest millions with someone wearing button cuffs.”

Like many men, cardiologist Dr. Jerome Goldfischer had amassed a large collection of cufflinks throughout his career, but he felt that few of them were interesting or unique. That led him to combine his interest in collecting rare antique Japanese porcelain buttons with his desire to personalize his attire. The result was the creation of Artistic Links, an exquisite For more than three decades, Dr. Goldfischer has collected buttons made of Satsuma or Arita porcelain that date back to the early 1900s. Satsuma buttons are known for their distinctive glaze and exquisite detail, while Arita buttons, made of fine white porcelain, are prized for their artistry, craftsmanship and varied shapes.

These buttons have great historical value because the depict two significant themes in the Japanese culture.

Some of the buttons represent the Shichi-Fuku-Jin, the “Seven Gods of Good Luck.” a group of Japanese deities traditionally thought to bring good fortune and happiness.

They are named Fukurokuju (god of wisdom), Daikoku (god of wealth), Ebisu (god of abundance), Benzaiten (goddess of beauty), Hotei (god of happiness), Jurojin (god of longevity) and Bishamonten (god of dignity).

Other buttons represent Noh Theatre, a classical Japanese performance art form that originated in the eleventh century. There are five varieties of Noh plays and the performers wear five types of Noh masks that represent gods, demons, men, women and the elderly.

Dr. Goldfischer commissioned artisans to create custom-designed cufflinks and tie tacks in 18K gold that showcase and preserve the unique character and cultural significance of each button. He initially had these distinctive accessories created to complement his own wardrobe, but he received such high praise for them that he decided to make them available to other discriminating individuals.

Since all of the antique buttons were individually handcrafted, their sizes vary ever so slightly so a mold is taken of each button to ensure that the bezel of the accessory is a perfect fit. A choice of bezels is also available to further customize these extraordinary creations. No tuxedo is complete without a watch modeled after this iconic bowtie-resembling starship.

Silver screws at the base of the watch emulate those on Darth Vader’s helmet. Rather than using Dark Side alchemy to further strengthen the metal, Devon teamed up with an aerospace engineering company to create a strong and fluid watch that is as impressive as Darth Vader’s armor.

The hexagonal wing of the TIE Fighter is one of the more recognizable shapes from Star Wars and is depicted on either side of the watch, as well as the indicator on the face.

The shape creates a peek at the red and green motor covers that are representative of the controls on Darth Vader’s center console. All of this is protected by scratch-resistant polycarbonate with bulletproof durability. While the watch does not draw on the energy of starlight, it does mimic the advanced design of the starship.

The symbol of the Galactic Empire is featured on the crown used to operate the watch, and is a reminder of the steadfast determination and loyalty the TIE Fighter pilots had toward the empire. Power for the Devon Star Wars watch is provided by a rechargeable cell that runs for up to two weeks on a single charge.

This low density, high strength metal is indicative of the overall strength and performance of the watch.
