THE ROYAL QUOTE
“...I therefore, personally consider the ARISE IGALA LEADERSHIP AWARDS & LECTURES as a commendable development because the event has the potential of establishing a chord between the Igala nation and other ethnic groups in the Great Kwararafa Kingdom and across Nigeria as well. The event is also about the only Pan-Igala national event from the media, packaged basically to promote, celebrate and project sons and daughters of Igala Nation at the national forum. It is a demonstration of a true spirit of Igala nationalism.”
This is part of the speech by HRM, Dr. Idakwo Ameh Oboni, Agaba Idu, Ata Igala and Chairman, Kogi State Council of Chiefs at the maiden edition of ARISE IGALA LEADERSHIP AWARDS & LECTURES at Ladi Kwali Hall, Sheraton Hotel, Abuja on Saturday, March 29, 2014.

THROW BACK HE, DR. NNAMDI AZIKIWE ON A PRESIDENTIAL VISIT TO THE PALACE OF HIS ROYAL MAJESTY, AGABAIDU, ATTAH IGALA IN 1963.
Visiting the Palace of Attah Igala in the recent past was a thing of great importance in view of our strategic position in the country. We occupied and played in the local and national political spheres very well that consulting and discussing with our traditional leaders amongst others were very key to the development of our land. Today, we must look back as a people to figure out what went wrong and fix them so to regain our past position and then move forward for the good of our land and dear nation, Nigeria.

THE PUBLISHER’S DESK
WE PULLED THROUGH AGAIN… ONOJA J. OKPANACHI PUBLISHER/CHIEF EDITOR
T
he 8th edition of ARISE IGALA Leadership Awards & Lectures took place successfully against all the confronting challenges ranging from the negative economic slide carried over from 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic amongst many other factors that shook businesses to their foundations down to the human factors particularly those of naysayers, the anti-progress of projects that can bring unity, peace and development to the land. If we are to go by the signals of these challenges, we wouldn’t have dared to start planning for the 8th edition in the first instance but because we are determined and we understand very well the significance of what the annual awards and lectures means to the ARISE IGALA Projects and the people we serve, we have to sacrifice and go the “abnormal” ways to execute it. And, God Almighty showed us great mercy. I must confess that this very edition came with such challenges that at a point giving up seemed the best option and moreover, people would have understood easily any cancellation considering the times we are in but that was going to be a dot in the circle so we decided to keep it clean. Therefore, pulling through turned the only options we were left with. So, as we moved on, doors opened, still, strong storm raged scattering the blessings that were coming from the open doors and it became obvious that powers were truly bent to hear bad news from our end but we pulled through by God’s grace. The aftermath which was to give us rest rather posed
great challenge as forces were up again in diverse forms to frustrate the successes we have recorded and still recording. But, to the glory of God and the good of the people, we are sailing pass all those negatives in manners never imagined. Life on this project has been risk from inception but the joy is that we are closing-in gradually despite all and this is a very big consolation to us as the goal we are pursuing is worth it after all. My warmest appreciation to my lovely family, The ARISE IGALA Team, Supporters, Associates and Partners – thank you all for the great supports. We love the fact that you’re loving us all the ways. And, to the ARISE IGALA Award Advisory Board, a very big thank you as we are making the difference; we keep producing an award ceremony that is appreciated by most people because of our standard and professional ethics. More grease to your elbows – “you’re doing well”. Once again, you all (members of the ARISE IGALA Award Advisory Board) deserve special mention here because the people are very proud of your distinction:

The programme, which is unarguably the most consistent, clearly defined and purposeful PanIgala programme, is not just an avenue for celebrating Igala sons, daughters and indeed well-meaning Nigerians, it is a platform for incentivizing the socio-cultural consciousness of Igala people as they match towards national progress, peace and development.

RESOLUTIONS The following resolutions were reached at the 2021 edition of the ARISE IGALA Leadership Awards and Lectures: • In view of the importance of sustainable development in a community, Igala Sons and Daughters who sacrificially and selflessly gave their all to the development of Igalaland and Nigeria as a whole were commended and urged to keep the tempo. Participants however urged all well-to-do Igala sons, daughters and indeed all Nigerians, to imbibe the culture of community development. • Participants observed with dismay the happenings in Igalaland especially the vacant stools of Ata Igala and Achadu Igala, and therefore encouraged every Igala son and daughter to join hands by speaking the truth and standing for same at all times. • Participants urged all Igala sons and daughters to shun cultism, banditry, kidnapping, “omawe de” syndrome and other forms of malfeasance that have halted the socioeconomic prosperity of Igala communities, Kogi state and Nigeria. • Governments at all levels should wake up to their responsibility, especially in the areas of creating enabling environment for all persons to actualize their dreams and aspirations. It was agreed that there can be no peace and stability without social justice, equity in terms of distribution and allocations of state resources. ARISE IGALA-ISSUE 62

THE COMMUNIQUE
• There is an urgent need to deconstruct the current political structures that give enormous powers to the Centre and reconstruct new political structures that will give more powers to the various states and local governments. • Nigeria remains trapped in a dangerously hot and slippery pit where survival of the fittest remains supreme, where dogs eat dogs to live and where clannish affinity rather than national collective spirit reigns toweringly and rather destructively. There is therefore a need for selfless leadership. APPRECIATION AND CONCLUSION The organizer of the ARISE IGALA Leadership Awards and Lectures, through the publisher of the ARISE IGALA Magazine, Mr. Onoja James Okpanachi, thanked all board members, especially the ARISE IGALA Award Advisory Board, the Editorial Advisory Board Members of the ARISE IGALA Magazine, as well as all Igala sons and daughters who ensured that this year’s edition was as successful as the previous ones. He also used the medium to congratulate all the eighteen recipients of the 2021 ARISE IGALA Leadership Awards and Lectures. He encouraged all citizens to imbibe the culture of community development, as no nation can experience sustainable development without community participation or involvement. He finally pledged to remain committed to the dreams and vision of the ARISE IGALA Leadership Awards and Lectures, adding that the platform will continue to leverage on the diversity of Igala people to keep producing the colourful and insightful annual event that will stand the test of time.

TOWARDS THE RAPID SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF A PEOPLE:
THE IMPERATIVE OF SELFLESS SACRIFICE This being the paper delivered by Professor Emmy Ikanaba Unuja Idegu, Department of Theatre, Film and Carnival Studies, University of Calabar at the 8th edition of ARISE IGALA LEADERSHIP AWARDS & LECTURES at Sheraton Hotel, Abuja on Saturday, May 29, 2021. Protocols PREAMBLE his topic was deliberately coined with very effectively challenging and intriguing words. Take a look at “towards” for a start. Towards does not suggest arrival at a given destination at all, but rather in the direction towards the said destination. This implies that the topic under our explication indicates that we as a people are far from development even when we are already in motion. By this interrogation, we are only moving, desiring, aspiring, walking and working regarding development. Rapid our second prominent word in this topic ordinarily should dictate the urgency of our motion towards development. Sustainable development taken together is a far cry from development both as a concept, a process and a product. While development can be understood from the pedestal of advancement, a new stage in a changing situation or simply put a process that creates growth, progress, positive change or the addition of physical, economic, environmental, socio-political, religious and cultural advancement. As good and progressive as development is, scholars, practitioners and development agents and drivers solidly asset that any development that is not sustainable is an open invitation for anarchy, decay, frustration, restiveness and protests. This, to a certain extent, explains why in spite of the claims and counter claims by the political or elite leadership class of developing their constituencies; hunger, protest, disappointment and who knows, very soon revolt is characteristic of our everyday experience. This paper is consequently therefore attempting to situate sustainable development of a people on the firmly solid foundation of selfless sacrifice.
T
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT By my humble understanding of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, we have over the years, and sadly since independence in 1960 focused more on our superficially deficient understanding of development than strategize for sustainable development. We cannot talk about sustainable development when there is no enabling
environment and there are no indices that promote sustainable development. In any sporting activity, people can only compete when there are equal playing grounds. No matter the size of clubs, states or countries involved in football tournaments, every football team has equal representation of eleven players on the field of play at a go. From the third tier through the second tier to the first tier of government, Nigeria can never engage in meaningful sustainable development until there is a drastic constitutional rework that will guarantee the devolution of excessive power from the centre to the states and local governments. For now, the exclusive or concurrent list for the central government is too heavy to accommodate rapid sustainable development from various segments of Nigeria. Until we agree to allow each state or region or geo-political configuration to look inwards, tap the resources available within, commence the process and products of development, there can be no rapid sustainable development. You compete when you look inwards to use what you have to advance your people and others will be so challenged to also look inwards and do same. Does each country not look inwards to raise its national team from amongst its citizens for any sports competition? From my very simple comprehension of my community called Nigeria, the only competition we have now is the federal allocation that all states are heavily dependent on, from where the states begin to compete in the payment of salaries, which as far as I am concerned does not equate sustainable development as envisaged. Sadly enough, these days you hear governors announce with pride how they owe less salaries than other states and not how they have been able to harness human and natural resources at their disposal for sustainable development. There is no local government council or state in Nigeria that has enough exclusive right to use resources available to them to develop their people. A situation where State Governments control resources on the top soil in their states while the Federal Government firmly controls resources under their very soil, sustainable development is at best a mirage. I do not opine that the allocations
ARISE IGALA-ISSUE 62
81
the lead paper from the centre cannot be used for developing the states and local governments. I am however, maintaining that if we are serious about sustainable development, we cannot achieve that within the anti-meaningful confines of our current structure. Like I did submit in one of my papers not too long ago, what Nigeria as an assemblage of configured and misconfigured nationalities direly needs now more than ever before is a total systemic overhaul in tandem with what Jacques Derrida theorized as deconstruction. Deconstruction is a school of philosophy and literary appreciation that encapsulates the writings of the French philosopher, Jacques Derrida and the Belgian/ North American literary critic, Paul De Man. Like the Experiential Testimonial Creativity (ETC) theory of Emmy Ikanaba Unuja Idegu which applies to the writing and the critiquing of creative texts, deconstruction also concerns itself principally with the reading and consequent reassembling of the original meaning to texts. It is not destructive per say, but concerns itself also with questioning
...the totalitarian projects of western metaphysics, the ethical, aesthetic, epistemological projects of post-enlightenment science, the imperialism of European countries as they carved out their empires throughout the colonized world, the great patriarchal domination over women--all of these structures and institutions, people agree, need to be taken down to their foundations in order to expose their contradictory logic. But now, the argument goes, we need some reconstruction. We need to put things together again in some new, more democratic order. Deconstruction according to Derrida is “...the undoing, decomposing, and desedimenting of structures, in a certain sense more historical than the structuralist movement it called into question, was not a negative operation. Rather than destroying it was also necessary to understand how an ‘ensemble’ was constituted and to reconstruct it to this end.” So deconstruction names something rather more powerful than simply undoing. It names the conditions according to which it is possible for events
82 ARISE IGALA-ISSUE 62
to occur and for institutions to be constituted (Gregory Castle 2007, 89). So many scholars and researchers have taken deconstruction to mean any act of challenging a text that leads to the destruction of its original meaning to suit their own purposes. This is precisely why Johnson (1985, 5) posits that “Deconstruction is not synonymous with ’destruction’ itself, which etymologically means ‘to undo... a virtual synonym for ‘to de-construct...’ If anything is destroyed in a deconstructive reading, it is not the text, but the claim to unequivocal domination of one mode of signifying over another. A deconstructive reading is a reading which analyses the specificity of a text’s critical difference from itself” Further foregrounding this theory, Ola Ifatimehin (Interview on 15th November 2017) submits that
Derrida questioned the notion of a central authority to the meaning of texts. He believes that meaning is arbitrary and polysemic in nature. It is this very perception of texts that leads Derrida into the act of “restructuring” texts in ways that the often ignored marginal meanings and silences are converted into major sources of textual power. He calls this deconstruction
Derrida’s deconstruction theory is of great relevance to the topic under discourse because we have established that the theory dismembers and reassembles a written text by subjecting it to critical examination and diverse interpretations always and or most often antipodal to existing meanings or intentions of the writer. Within the purview of Derrida’s deconstruction theory, Nigeria is the written text that needs to be deconstructed. After all the ethnic, clannish, sectional and obvious selfishly bloated falsehood of a nationhood, until the conglomerates of the contraption of an endlessly irreconcilable entity called Nigeria accept the process of deconstructing this unworkable enigmatic mirage, sustainable development will remain, at best on our distastefully deceptive lips and both this and other generations after us will bear the seemingly irreparable brunt. There is the urgent need to give Nigeria a radical overhaul to restore its already battered but “reconstructable” image. A Nigeria that will take a look at “...the often ignored marginal meanings and silences” that can
the lead paper be “...converted into major sources of ... power” A Nigeria that will once again be the pride and engine of sustainable development. Nigeria needs a deconstructed psyche which will block leaking areas that justifiably encourage corruption. Until the institutions that make up the fragile contraption are deconstructed, we will continue to pursue those who are corrupt rather than reduce the faulty institutions that unambiguously encourage corruption. We need a deconstructed Nigeria that will justify the lyrics of our national anthem viz; ...the labour of our heroes past shall never be in vain. While well-meaning Nigerians continue to call for restructuring the entire system, I dare propose a combination of the tenets of restructuring and Darrida’s deconstruction theory by advocating what I term; collective constructive deconstruction. In applying Darrida’s deconstruction theory, only a critic or a few of them could be involved in the process of deconstructing a text individually or a few critics but from different settings and personal understandings. My call for collective constructive deconstruction is the coming together of a broad-
based, all people-inclusive and empowered citizens to take a look at earlier reforms and existing laws towards realigning priorities and refocusing our national dreams through a genuine collective rather than a democratic process that will make Nigeria as great as it ought to be again. Why do I say so? An unrigged referendum, I mean a genuine collection of the collective voice of the citizenry will tell it on the mountain top that we have lost hope in the political leadership to steer the ship of state. The on-going so-called democratic process of reviewing the Nigerian constitution by the same democratic institution that the majority of the citizenry has long forgotten their relevance within a people-oriented democracy, cannot guarantee superficial development, not to talk of sustainable development. If indeed Nigeria is interested in sustainable development, we have not even started until a truly people-oriented and focused body of patriotic representatives occupy the political or decision making organs that will midwife sustainable development. The engine of our nation is in pieces and we are taking the vehicle to excruciatingly hungry and angry road mechanics
DISCUSSANT
HENRY ANIBE AGBNIKA Development Expert, Governance and Policy Reform Consultant to fix it. Pity! Am I being anti-democratic by calling for the people chosen collective rather than the selfordained and purchased democratic organs? Not exactly. Nonetheless, experientially speaking, a number of Nigerians have lost faith in the capacity and capability of our current over-fed legislators most of whom are far removed from the realities in their constituencies. We need a collective constructively deconstructed entity where we will have leaders, and not rulers that they are. A Nigeria where political office holders will turn away from being masters but servants. A Nigeria where people entrusted with power will stop playing God but serve humanity with the fear of God. We need
sustainable people-based development and not public looters. With every Nigerian politician and the entire leadership strata claiming to be religious, one begins to wonder whether they are displaying hypocrisy against God, Satan or themselves. Take a look at your own political leaders, who is deceiving who? This leads me to the fundamental issue of morality in politics. MORALITY IN POLITICS It has been stated that the political institution is the most crucial in any society since it determines the operation of other institutions. This is why morality is germane to politics. Lasswell (1960:124) has noted that politics is a world of ideological conflict in which “the ruling elites view one another

the lead paper as potential enemies … (and) the ideology of the other may appeal to disaffected elements at home and weaken the internal power position of each ruling class”. A situation like the one described by Lasswell can hardly present any moral standard worthy of emulation. This motion finds support in the submission of Eskew (2014) who notes that, “politics is not a profession that encourages moral reflection or insight”, emphasizing that “the end justifies the means”, is good enough for most practitioners. Thus politicians lack morals as they attempt to destroy themselves for political gains. But morality is key to the laws that are made, and
it is the law that guides political actions. Tudoreanu (2012) states that “every government rule (i.e every law) is based on some concept of right and wrong. Therefore, every law is based on a certain view of morality”. This is why certain acts such as rape and murder are criminalized. They are immoral. The political institution enacts laws based on the general conception of morality, the object of which is the attainment of a well ordered society. This is equally dependent on our belief system. Rana (2017) notes that, “our views about others are also shaped by our version of morality which is largely built upon our belief system”. The political leaders are therefore expected to display the kind
DISCUSSANT

Former Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Kogi State and former Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Kogi State of morality epitomized in the belief system. Such morality should, in turn, guide them to make laws that would benefit all. Rana goes on to state that “the economic status of individuals and means of production of a society largely influence the moral behaviours and people want to see these reflecting in their leaders” (2017). The import of Rana’s postulation is that the leadership of any society is expected to exhibit and maintain a particular standard of morality by which the moral status of such a society’s polity is determined. The essence of morality in politics, then, is knowing what is good and the determination to uphold that which is good. Flynn, citing Doran states that morality is “the desire to be good and to do good. Ethics … shows us how to move from the desire to be good and do good, to carrying out the actions to implement that desire” (2016). It is clear from the foregoing that it is morality that should determine the basis for political activity. Politics has been aptly defined by Crick as: An activity by which different interests within a given unit of rule
84 ARISE IGALA-ISSUE 62
are conciliated by giving each a share in power in proportion to their importance to the welfare and survival of the whole community (196:67). If the above is the actual reality, especially in developing countries, a sound moral basis for proper societal administration would be established, whereby each unit of the society would be properly conciliated. But the struggle for the power to determine the manner each unit is to be conciliated usually negates morality. This is because the leadership usually displays the characteristics stated by Lasswell and they are never fair to themselves or those they seek to lead. But political development can only be attained in a situation in which the leadership exhibits an appreciable level of morality. This is crucial especially in a country like Nigeria which is both multi-ethnic and multi-religious. A leadership founded on morality would be transparent, devoid of suspicion and would manifestly be geared towards fairness, justice, equity and sustainable development.
the lead paper Events that happen in our country today and that are enlarging in quick succession will very soon lead us into multiple conflagrations and disintegration. A country in which the security apparatus is the prerogative of a particular clan is a country living in retrogressive negative development. A nation where only a particular clan has the prerogative to leadership is a nation doomed to fail. A people whose resources are found in and amongst a minority group of the collective, yet those who produce virtually nothing to feed the populace determine crumps that should go to the minority with the golden egg,
cannot stay for long. A country where a clique from an ethnic configuration has posed the greatest threat to our unity and are ravaging the entire country, raping, killing, forcefully annexing other people’s sources of living in the name of advancing their own occupation, and doing so with obvious, even if not written support of the powers that be is set for disintegration. We were once colonized by the British and political freedom was given to us in 1960. Barely six years after that, we have since been plunged into obvious callous, inhuman, sadistic indigenous colonialism where a group of people think except they have spoken, all others are deaf and dumb. A situation where a minority clique of

Since patrons to such unpatriotic cliques are looking the other way, they have already laid the egg of separation set to hatch any moment from now. With the current high rate of insecurity all over the land, whoever dreams of sustainable development in this contraption of an unworkable assemblage of a country must wake up from such a nightmare and think beyond the box. For collective constructive deconstruction to breathe from the “I cannot breathe” conflagration where we have avoidably found ourselves, we cannot underplay the place of participation in sustainable Development. PEOPLE’S PARTICIPATION AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT Stakeholders often have very different visions and definitions of participation in development. Therefore, for development practitioners to be clear on their conceptual approach to participation, a series of important questions have to be answered: No consensus exists around a common definition of participation: it varies depending on the perspective applied. Some stakeholders define participation as the mobilization of people to eliminate unjust hierarchies of knowledge, power, and economic distribution. Others define it as the reach and inclusion of inputs by relevant groups in the design and implementation of a development project. These examples represent two of the main approaches to participation: a social movement perspective and a project-based or institutional
86 ARISE IGALA-ISSUE 62
perspective. These perspectives share a common understanding of participation as the involvement of ordinary people in a development process leading to change. Their scope and methods, however, can differ. Why is a participatory approach required? There are several answers. From the institutional perspective mentioned above, participation can be used a tool to achieve a preestablished goal defined by someone external to the community involved. For the social movement mentioned above, participation itself can be a goal as an empowering process. There is, however, growing consensus for active participation in the early stages of a development project or program, both in research and design of interventions. Such participatory goal setting does not secure a continued role for participation in the following stages of project implementation. It only indicates that with ownership in setting goals a sustained process with relevant outcomes and impact will be possible. Furthermore, the fundamental aim of empowering people to handle challenges and influence the direction of their own lives is inherent in participation. In Deepa Narayan’s definition of empowerment, participation becomes
the lead paper a turning point: “Empowerment is the expansion of assets and capabilities of poor people to participate in, negotiate with, influence, control, and hold accountable institutions that affect their lives” (Narayan 2006: 5). Narayan’s perspective is the institutional one, where participation for empowerment is about strengthening the people’s capacities and the demand side of governance. From the outset the focus of participatory communication was on dialogical communication rather than on linear communication. The emphasis was on participatory and collective processes in research, problem identification, decision making, implementation, and evaluation of
change. Most recently participatory approaches to communication have reinforced the emphasis on structural and social change. A broad-based policy debate initiated by the Rockefeller Foundation in 1997 and pursued by the Communication for Social Change Consortium in subsequent years has focused on structural inequality and social transformation. The “Rockefeller process” led to a definition of communication for social change as “a process of public and private dialogue through which people themselves define who they are, what they need and how to get what they need in order to improve their own lives. It utilizes dialogue that leads to collective problem
DISCUSSANT AUDU SAMUEL IBRAHIM, PhD Manager in the Tax Advisory and Regulatory Services Group of Andersen L.P Samuel identification, decision making, and communitybased implementation of solutions to development issues” Another line of thinking within development communication focuses on life skills development. This deals with the issues of developing core competencies required to engage actively as a citizen in society. This approach developed through the 1990s with a close connection to formal and informal education. Areas such as health education, civic education, income generation, and human rights are the core competencies associated with life skills development, and the forms of communication are didactic and faceto-face. Life skills development initiatives are performed in both formal and informal educational contexts. This booklet uncovers the principles and practices of participatory communication to guide communication practitioners through the different ways to work with participation in solving current development problems. A CALL FOR PARTICIPATION While the quest for participation in development programs and projects has existed for a long time, in recent years it has gained voice and become
a stronger concern. Participation is a principle in development with support coming from many different stakeholders: governments, donors, civil society, and ordinary citizens. From the 1970s and onwards, voices of both development practitioners and academics from developing countries have raised fundamental questions about the Western domination of the work and debate in development. The questions include who voices the concerns of the poorest and most marginalized populations, how is policy developed, and who participates in the decision-making processes? At the core of these concerns lies the quest for participation of the “voiceless” from developing countries—the marginalized and poorest sectors, as well as the disabled and women—in the international policy development and debate, as well as in the practical day-to-day work of implementing development projects. These questions have gained resonance today among many of the larger institutions working with development. An early critique comes from Latin America through Freire’s work in Brazilian adult education. He produced seminal works
ARISE IGALA-ISSUE 62
87
the lead paper on the history of participatory communication, particularly his books on liberating pedagogy (1979) and his critique of extension work (1973). The section on defining participation contains an elaboration of his dialogical communication model, which emphasizes a close dialectic between collective action and reflection and works towards empowerment. Additional early Latin American contributions to participatory strategies included scholars and practitioners who, in line with the dependency paradigm’s national discourse, were critical of the international (Western) centers. They were also inspired by the resistance movements against military dictatorships and the pro-democracy movement across Latin America, especially in the 1980s. Examples of this critical thinking and concern about people’s participation are reflected in the academic works of British development researcher Robert Chambers (1983) and Colombian development researcher Arturo Escobar (1995). Within development practice in the course of the 1990s and into the new millennium, these critical approaches to the dominant development discourses grew. From the large UN summits through the 1990s to the world social forums in recent years, with a growing voice civil society has articulated questions and concerns about participation in the development discourse, policy process, and actual practice. Transnational advocacy networks within a growing global civil society have provided innovative spaces for the participation paradigm to evolve into an ever more resonant quest for the contributions of the voiceless, the poorest, and marginalized sectors. As promises of past paradigms fail to materialize, the demand for a shift from expert driven models to endogenous ones grows steadily. The international development community has been attentive to the issues raised. Today participation, along with concerns for voice, empowerment, and poverty orientation, is at the core of much development work, particularly in governance issues. Participatory approaches are present in project cycles of many organizations. At this point, permit me to particularize by going to “anuku”, my own nation, the great Igala kingdom to conclude the last part of the topic concerning selfless sacrifice as an imperative to sustainable development. THE IMPERATIVE OF SELFLESS SACRIFICE FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT Let me stress here that politically, I am a Nigerian. Geographically, I am an unrepentant Middle Belter and histori-socio-culturally I am an undiluted Igala man, ever positively proud of his origin and essence. Whenever I have the opportunity to talk about selfless sacrifice, the legendary Princess Inikpi Oma Ufedo Baba’s case pops up with rapidly unstoppable relevance. I will not bother
88 ARISE IGALA-ISSUE 62
you with the details which you already know. However, suffice it to say that at a point in the elastic evolution, growth and development of the Igala nation, according to proven empiricism, during the Igala/Beni war of 1515-1516, the oracle divined that for the Igala people to win the battle, Princess Inikpi must be sacrificed by life burial at the River Niger bank, the route of the Beni people to Ida for the said historic war. With the greatest but understandable natural reluctance of the Ata Igala, His Royal Majesty, Ayegba Oma Idoko (the father to Inikpi), Inikpi on her own volunteered to die for her people to live. After her sacrifice, proven historical materials (both written and oral) asset that while the Beni warriors where crossing the River Niger to Ida, they saw the whole town in flames. Consequently, they went back celebrating that the people they were taking war to were already burning. Without shooting an arrow, the selfless sacrifice of Princess Inikpi gave her people their victory. In translating it to the national level, Yerima succinctly asserts in his paper at the 2015 Annual Arise Igala Leadership Awards & Lectures titled; PRINCESS INIKPI AND CULTURE OF SACRIFICIAL LEADERSHIP FOR NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT that ...for now, the Igala people, use the essence of the Inikpi sacrifice to form their communal cultural persona, while the other, the heroine Inikpi, lives as the communal bond which keeps the people culturally as an entity. Both the Igala and the wider Nigerian people from their action of the recent elections, have started a process of destroying the old myths, they have become more critical of their socio-political realities, and have started a process of explication of subjecting the role of their leaders to critical thought, and this has built a new consciousness where they have realized that the future of their country is in their hands, not in the selfblown ego of bad and corrupt leaders. This is a good sign for socio-cultural and political development which has equity and justice for a nation. Simply put, except and unless we have a new uncorrupted, dynamic, patriotic nationalist crop of leaders in Nigeria who are ready to offer, emphatically, NOT their lives like Inikpi did for the Igala people, but selfless leadership, Nigeria remains trapped in a dangerously hot and slippery pit where survival of the fittest remains supreme, where dogs eat dogs to live and where clannish affinity rather than national collective spirit reigns toweringly and rather destructively. CONCLUSION: THE TEMPORARY TRAGEDY OF TRADITIONAL ORPHANS: THE IGALA KINGDOM AS SEMIOTIC PARADIGM OF NIGERIA Permit me to conclude this paper with this sub-title.
the lead paper It will be a chronic unIgalatic posture if I end this presentation without calling our attention to the recent happenings in my country home of the Great Igala Kingdom. As at today, I do not know of any traditional nation that has been so deeply plunged into what I call temporary tragedy of traditional orphans like the Igala people. With our father (The Ata Igala) and Achadu already transited from Ef’ile to Ef’ojegwu, we have become traditional orphans. This for me, and as far as my limited knowledge of our history can take me, is the very first time we are suffering this tragedy of temporary orphans. As we grope in the thick darkness of our current tragic plight, I hope and pray that it will not be long, we shall regain our lost family status and bounce back with retroactively compensative accomplishment. I look forward to an Ata Igala and and Achadu that will remember the selfless sacrifice of people like Inikpi Oma Ufedo Baba, Ame Oboni, Stephen Makoji Achema, Abubakar Audu to mention just a few. These are people who gave their all sacrificially and selflessly for the Igala Kingdom and the global applicability therein. If the Igala people are ready to learn our lessons from the shortcomings of our traditional, political and secular leaders, then the thirst for sustainable development of our land can be achieved. While the Igala Kingdom is currently suffering from traditional orphans, Nigerians are neck deep in tragic leadership orphans. Until and except Nigerians are ready to speak and do the truth that we have deliberately gone off target and that the dreams of our founding fathers have been jettisoned by our current leaders, not only will sustainable development elude us as an entity, but we may disintegrate into fragmented but well sought after independent nationalities and nations. May the Lord God almighty show us His mercy now and ever.
