exposure so to guarantee their rightful place in our today’s dynamic society.
Our intention to collaborate in our 2020 ventures is very important and inevitable too as we embark on practical steps towards bridging the gaps.
We shall also seek for relevant network and mentors to nurture our women in their chosen fields of endeavours and even in academics – we shall be very intentional and conscious in all our practical steps so that every venture we take up comes to a very successful end with good results to show for it.
We are closing the year 2019 intentionally with ISSUE 54 focusing on women as we open our 2020 with practical steps in the campaign to bridge the gaps in a bid to inspire and encourage more women participation in all the spheres of our system for a healthy nation. The time has come for us to intensify efforts towards making people to truly understand that the role of a woman in the society is not optional but very key to completing the primary design of God Almighty for mankind and our dear continent in particular as it seems others are embracing this truth faster leaving Africa behind. In 2020 (and beyond), we shall be collaborating with relevant bodies and stakeholders in the promotion and advancement of women cause. It’s about empowerment and development to help our dear women advance in all fronts so that we can have a better and stronger society. We shall be focusing on such partnerships that will bring them real skills, knowledge and
Interestingly, we shall also embark on educating our men to embrace the fact that the development of our women is actually for our own good and the society at large as it was God’s design from genesis that women be our strong support and not the other way. So, if that’s the original plan, then it means whatever we invest in them is what we surely reap as it is even a very fundamental principle of life that a man reaps whatever he sows. So, I say a very big congratulation to us all as we are about taking some very conscious steps towards the upliftment of our women. They need our supports and in turn, we get theirs. It’s a win-win for all. Arise!

AFRICA WOMEN CONFERENCE:
PROGRESS REPORT
From the conceptualization of the Africa Women Conference (AWC) in March 2017 to its inauguration in New York in March 2018 and to the 2nd Edition in Namibia in November 2018, the AWC has recorded commendable progress in achieving its aims and objectives. Though still very far from resting on its oars, records show that the efforts put towards bringing women together from across the African continent for its development, if further intensifies will yield the much desired result. Delegates from the previous two editions have collaborated with each other on various projects. The AWC Leadership Development Centre for Women and Girls (LDCWG) was also inaugurated with a brief ceremony in Abuja, Nigeria on 30th September, 2019. The LDCWG was conceptualized based on reviews of contributions made by delegates and panellists during the previous conferences. The AWC Leadership Development Centre for Women and Girls is an initiative of the AWC to raise female community leaders in every African society who understand the importance and are committed to ensuring the sustainable development of their communities. The Leadership Development Centre equips young women and girls with skills required to take up leadership roles through personal and career growth. The AWC LDCWG provides a platform for highly skilled international resource persons who are driving change across various fields to provide training and mentorship for African Women and Girls who are living in under resourced communities thereby enabling them to aspire for excellence and leadership while helping them realize their full potentials. The Centre achieves this by running a full circle of practical and theoretical impartation which begins with a workshop that enables mentors meet physically with their mentees via group and individual trainings. During the workshop, resource persons work with the mentees to develop individual work plans that will be implemented over a six-month period in the mentees communities. Both parties remain in touch via online and physical platforms during this period. After six months, the mentees performances are evaluated through a peer review mechanism, the best performing leaders in various sectors are then selected and supported with resources to help them do more for their communities. woman, interrogate causes of action to solve such challenges and proffer sustainable solutions. Recognizing that working together works, the Conference stressed that partnership between and among women groups in Africa should be pursued, encouraged, advocated, supported, institutionalized and replicated across the continent to reduce inequalities. The Conference further noted that continuous discussion of issues that affect women in Africa is central to balancing equal development, improve total equality in human development, tackle poverty, unemployment and illiteracy among women.
It was underscored that while being absent from decision- making positions shortchanges the African woman; the Conference posited that the African woman is conscious of the many challenges of the continent and the urgent need to contribute its development. In strong terms, the Conference resolved that it will take the African woman to move Africa forward and consequently stressed the need for the expansion of the political space and inclusion of women participation in politics as a human right. The Conference identified access to education for the girl child, domestication of the boychild, change of cultural policies, financial ARISE IGALA-ISSUE 54

place institutional mechanisms at various levels of its organs that will set aside a percentage of elective positions for women.
In consideration of all of the above, the Conference Declared as follows:
This would ensure that women have favourable access to nomination processes that will enable them contest elections into all elective offices. Reduction in the cost of nomination forms for elective positions was also identified as a measure to encourage greater women involvement in politics.
That there should be a legislative instrument making it constitutionally mandatory on governments of African countries to set aside certain percentage of the membership of their Cabinets for women. This could be for a specific period of time to enable the gender balance philosophy become internalized in the body polity of African nations. That the constitutions of political parties of African countries should enforce the principle of Affirmative Action by putting in 16 ARISE IGALA-ISSUE 54
Parliaments of African nations should enact stringent guidelines that will sanction political parties that do not comply with relevant provisions enhancing access of women to elective offices through women gender friendly nominations processes.

In recognition of the fact that the possession of a compelling intellectual capacity which emanates from quality education provides visionary leadership that will help African nations defeat poverty, create wealth, create jobs and enhance prosperity, the Conference resolved that the lack of education for the girl-child should be criminalized by African governments. Cultural barriers and stereotypes which adversely hinder access of the girl child to functional education at all levels of the educational rung should be tackled as knowledge is key to effective women participation in political processes. Coalition of Civil Society and Faith-Based organizations should pressure African governments to give effect to domesticated
international instruments in favour of the African woman. That the increasing trend of trafficking in persons particularly young African women must be halted through the establishment of a continental task force that would work with African governments, regional economic Blocs, the African Union, International Organization for Migration, the European Union and other International organizations. Even though experiences are local and at the same similar across the continent, the Conference resolved that national b a r r i e r s , differences in tongues, tribes and beliefs must be set aside for the African woman to form the coalition for the emancipation of women ARISE IGALA-ISSUE 54

TACKLING THE SOCIAL MENACE IN IGALA NATION By SULE ISA AKAGWU KPALEKO ANYIGBA - KOGI STATE
T
he recent happenings in Igala nation call for spiritual cleansing from all perspectives, be it traditional, religious and socio-cultural perspective. Though going by my faith, I would have accepted whatever that happened is an act of God but the multiple occurrence of events in Igalaland need urgent attention as it metamorphosis into disastrous trend. The genesis of our difficulty was the death of Prince Abubakar Audu which unfortunately change the mantle of leadership in the state from Igala Nation to other axis. As if that was not enough, our Honourable Minister, a dogged Barrister, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Hon James Ocholi died almost at the same time as a result of ghastly motor accident – this further destabilized the leadership traits of the people of Kogi east. Indeed, Igala Nation is at its trying time, we have lost relevance in the scheme of things both at the state and national levels. this assertion might not be accepted by all, but we can make reference to the following happenings to draw a conclusion, we have no Minister, no Permanent Secretary, no Federal Commissioner, no Ambassador, no top officers in the military and paramilitary. Though it is widely accepted
that marginalisation is not only bad but painful, and it is even more painful when the majority are being marginalized by the minority. After the death of these aforementioned illustrious sons of Igala Nation, development, social cohesion and spirit of oneness have started eluding us. Envy, hatred, kidnapping, armed robbery, killing, sectionalism and all forms of barbaric activities reign supreme in our land. Politicians have become so desperate for any available political position for their selfish interest. Morality has been killed and buried by our generation without remorse. Thuggery and cult activities have become more lucrative and rewarding amongst the youths to the detriment of their certificates. Let me use some of the conflict resolution approaches with social hypotheses devoid of political compromise to ameliorate Igala Nation challenges to a bearable minimum. These include but not limited to Traditional, Religion and SocioCultural Approaches. TRADITIONAL APPROACH As the name implies, this approach has to do with our traditional institutions, a supposed father of all sons and daughters

OPINION
of Igala origin both at home and in diaspora. In an ideal African society that exhibit our cultural norms and values, the traditional institution is seen to be sacred, apolitical, fair and just in their dealings, but where the reverse becomes the practice, it brings hatred, division and unrest among the people. A call for unity of purpose by an unjust traditional institution might not see the light of the day. Nevertheless, the institution can embark on a cleansing exercise to enhance productivity, attitudinal change, peaceful coexistence and prosperities in the land. RELIGIOUS APPROACH The various faiths in Igalaland; the Christians, Muslims, Orthodox, Pentecostal and all the religious houses should take it as a duty to embark on regular sermon against faulty leadership and mal-administration of our leaders and the various social vices that enveloped our society today. There is equally an urgent need for special prayers and fasting sessions to call upon the Almighty God for the betterment and peaceful coexistence among the people. All the Imams and Pastors must embark on these special prayers for the cleansing of Igala land from the shackles of under-development that has engulfed our land SOCIO-CULTURAL APPROACH The need to embark and revive our cultural heritage to showcase our rich cultural traits and folklore to the world is very crucial at this material time. The ITALO festival needs to be revived as urgent as possible without any political influence as an avenue to itemize our challenges and
proffer possible solutions. The primary objective is to unite all sons and daughters of Igala origin. The EGBE festival at Egume is another heritage that need international coverage aside the sacrificial theme for the land, the OGANI festival of Ankpa and Idah, Ocho and Onoko Festival by Idah people and the IBEGU festival across all towns in Igalaland need to be revived to further enhance our peaceful coexistence. This call for unity and peaceful coexistence is very crucial for all and sundry to help regain our lost glory in the committee of nations, the enlightenment program must start from our various homes, family/community associations, pressure groups, schools, organising lectures and symposiums on the value of human life and the need to unite for a better tomorrow. Our people must grow from the retardation of ÒMÀWÈDÈ and take responsibility in the scheme of things, this is a major way our generation can have the replica of Dr. Steven Achema (Politics without bitterness), Prince Abubakar Audu (Developmental politics), Alh. Jibrin Echocho (empowerment), Hajia Salamatu Baiwa (empowerment), Prof. Francis Idachaba (Igala Education Foundation), Dr Ibrahim Wada (IVF Expert), Rear Admiral Jibrin Usman (Okura Naval School), Alh. The first edition came with lots of pains for the organizer but all eventually turned to blessings in disguise as she practically drew lessons from her own experience and the criticisms from those who never see good in anything. KOGI’S UNITY, PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT SHOULD BE EVERYBODY’S BUSINESS –ALHAJI HASSAN YUSUF ARISE IGALA-ISSUE 54

INTERVIEW
Alhaji Hassan Yusuf is the Chairman of the Ganaja/Ajaokuta Road Motor Park, Lokoja, Kogi State. By the virtue of his position, he interacts with lots of people with varying points of views on various issues on daily basis and he is really concerned about some of the developments in the state in recent times. He shares some of his words of advice with ALI MAHA in Lokoja. Here’s the excerpt of their interaction: Can we meet you? I’m Alhaji Hassan Yusuf. By the grace of Almighty Allah, I am in charge of the affairs of this motor park today as the elected Chairman by the people here to serve them. What is it like meeting different faces everyday with varying opinions and characters here being your office and how do you deal with challenges that come with the experience? Honestly, it takes God’s special grace to be in service of people here (in our motor park) and 52 ARISE IGALA-ISSUE 54
be able to deal with everybody satisfactorily. If you drive through this place every time you wouldn’t know that there is an administration in place that makes everything work orderly. The orderliness here is not automatic, there is a system in place ensuring things work well and people are placed to head this system. This is where we come in and I as the Chairman interface with everybody to be sure we all are on the same page. In the course of this work, I meet people of different faiths, languages and political beliefs

every day and it’s my duty to meet everyone’s need even though it’s not possible to satisfy all. But, the good thing is that with God’s given wisdom, we manage every situation that comes up every time for the good of all. So, how has business been in the state capital in recent times? My dear brother, I must be honest with you that our kind of business is one of human basic necessities in life. So, either in good or bad times, people need transportation as an inevitable part of their existence. Therefore, to respond to your question, we are in the state capital which makes our location very strategic to movements of people. So, we are always busy with the transportation services but we always have human face to our charges. We ensure we fix what is affordable given the time we may find ourselves – prices go up and down but not up in such manner that will not be the true reflection of the reality on ground at given time. How do you manage political discussions in the motor park as such causes divisions in some other places? We humans are all politically conscious and
involved directly or indirectly either we accept it or not and as such one cannot totally control adults in having political discussions but as a leader, I always take a holistic look at issues and hesitate to blame people and parties but contribute to make sure everybody’s point count for the benefit of all. Like the recent political developments in Kogi State, many people have failed to see when God is at work because things are not going their own ways. God has a purpose for everything and there is nothing He is not aware of in the affairs of man. So, my candid advice to all those that have come my way on political discussions has been that we support the success of our dear state in our various ways capacities then avoid the continuous damaging words on people and the state even after elections are already over. I strongly believe is time to focus on works now and see what God brings in the future. However, I am very hopeful for a great and interesting Kogi State very soon. Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts with us Thank you. And, I pray God take you people and the ARISE IGALA project to higher heights. The people are really proud of you.

NO TIME FOR FRIVOLITIES, RATHER IT’S TIME TO “DO MORE” By CHIEF EDWARD DAVID ONOJA, CIK OLIMENE ATTAH IGALA, HE, DEPUTY GOVERNOR, KOGI STATE ____________________ LUGARD HOUSE, LOKOJA
T
he 2019 Kogi State Gubernatorial Elections have come and gone. We thank the Almighty God and our good people for the re-election of Governor Yahaya Bello for a second term in office, with me as his Deputy. Throughout the campaigns, His Excellency premised his request for a second term on the promise to do more and as his loyal follower I echoed that resolve. However, the 2nd term starts after inauguration on the 27th of January, 2020. Till then, our determination and duty is to finish this 1st term as strongly and as successfully as possible. My point is that as of today, neither His Excellency nor myself have any other desire outside completing our existing mandate with excellence and then improving on our performance in the one to come. In fact, the serious business of providing good governance to the people of Kogi State has since commenced. I do not have anything against destiny but Godgiven destiny is an honour which no man takes upon himself. In fact, destiny is a shy spirit which likes to hide itself. It has a way of meeting a man while he is engaged in his dutiful routine of today while doing everything to evade those who go running around looking for it. One of my favourite Bible characters is David. The story of how he became King of Israel when
nobody, including his father, gave him a chance is a classic tale of destiny finding and uplifting somebody while totally writing off others. David was away in the fields doing his normal job of tending sheep when destiny came in the form of Prophet Samuel to anoint a king from among the sons of Jesse, his father. After they did everything to push the prophet to anoint another person, he discovered the family had a last son whom they did not even believe had any glory in his future. Prophet Samuel directed them to fetch David and immediately he arrived, the Holy Spirit identified him for the job and the rest is history. The point I am trying to make here is that I, Edward DAVID son of Onoja, am not in agreement with those who have started seeing 2023 visions and making provocative permutations for me. 2023 is a river, when we get to it God will show us how to cross it. For now, allow me to settle down and do the current job my boss has assigned to me. Even tomorrow, can any of us tell what will happen? As a Believer I have learnt never to be ahead of the one who owns the future. It’s the fastest way to truncating one’s Destiny. Henceforth, I will walk out anyone who visits me and so much as mentions plans for a 2023 no mortal has control over. Not even the next moment can you guarantee. I pray the souls of those who passed on before, during and after the elections Rest In Peace.

I equally thank God for sparing the life of my wife and many others from the bullets of hired mercenaries from Benue & Nassarawa States. Let me use this medium to send a reply to those who have started peddling rumours of an imaginary rift between me and my boss. These victims of a febrile imagination are pathetic. If they don’t say His Excellency is angry with Edward, they will say Edward has fallen out with H.E, or both. Dem swear for some people? How do they come up with such barefaced lies? I consider it the worst form of disrespect and most unruly evil for me to ever be at loggerheads with my boss. Yes, His Excellency calls me his Siamese Twin brother and yes, he grants me grand access to his person and counsel, but till I die I will consider these to be privileges to be nurtured, and never rights to be demanded. For the record, there is only one Governor in the whole of Kogi State and that is none other than His Excellency, Governor Yahaya Bello. The rest of us in the New Direction Administration are colabourers he has engaged to join him in this great work. As his helpers, we are expected to work hard and conform to the norms of teamwork. The laws of the land clearly indicate that in governing the state none of us can ever become the Governor’s equal in authority, much less confront him in disagreement. Any unruliness or deviation is to be handled with alacrity, while anyone whose assignment is concluded is let go. So, let it be clear to those who are carrying rumours of a quarrel between my boss and me which they have been praying for, that their devilish desires will perish with themselves. As God Almighty lives, they will never live to see any division between His Excellency and me. I know my place and I am professionally inclined to observe my bounds per time. My boss, my Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, has my undiluted love and respect forever. As for his own love for me, I have discovered that the more
my stewardship increases in faithfulness to him, the more his love for me increases. In that case, the magic formula for me is simple - to increase my loyalty, competence and capacity more and more. Fortunately, both His Excellency and myself are Godly politicians who fear God. After the unprecedented victories we have enjoyed from the Almighty, what do we have to quarrel about? We have broken records. Who else has seen the startling margins we have recorded in Kogi State before? We started our electoral dominance from the Lokoja/Koto federal constituency by-election in August 2018 in which APC polled 26,860 to the paltry 14,845 votes received by our closest rival, the PDP. The next test of our acceptance came in the 2019 General Elections and by God’s grace, we came forth in flying colours. We effortlessly delivered President Buhari who bested Atiku Abubakar of the PDP with over 80,000 votes in Kogi State alone. After that, we executed a decisive takeover of the national and state legislative apparatus of Kogi State with a historic win; 2 out of 3 Senators, 7 out of 9 House of Representatives members and 25 out of 25 House of Assembly members swelled the ranks of the APC after that elections. We proceeded to the Elections Tribunal and made a clean sweep of the 3 Senatorial seats in the state as Senator Smart Adeyemi dislodged former Senator Dino Melaye of the PDP who the courts agree got it initially by foul means. With this grand chronicle of achievements under the leadership of His Excellency and our head tactician, all we have is gratitude. We have no room or reason or time to quarrel. I am even more loyal and humble in service to my boss now than ever before and my boss has become even more generous and magnanimous to me.

I also hear that some busybodies claim that I am not happy with my promotion to the exalted office of Deputy Governor of Kogi State. In their minds, I would have preferred to remain in my former office as the Chief of Staff to the Governor. I can only laugh in pity at how some unfortunates can drink medicine for an ailment I don’t have. To whom it may concern, I am ecstatic to be His Excellency, Edward David Onoja, the Deputy Governor of Kogi State. Some people thought I was too small for the office. They lobbied my Oga to bring “more qualified individuals”, but God pass them. I am forever grateful to my boss for finding me worthy of elevation to the number 2 position in our state. How can I ever find it in me to nurse anger or resentment against such a destiny helper? Yes, the position of Chief of Staff was sweet, it is always like that when you work with a people developer like Governor Yahaya Bello. Insiders can attest that I have never lobbied for any of the offices I have occupied under His Excellency. With leaders like Governor Yahaya Bello, every position filled is a masterclass in leadership selection but he must first find you worthy and trustworthy. Still, as sweet as CoS was, I cannot rate it with Deputy Governor. Those who don’t know the difference can consult the Constitution. Another thing is that my position today is the biggest commendation ever for my performance in my former office. If I did poorly, will my boss elevate me? Who promotes somebody who failed them to a higher office? My relationship with His Excellency dates back to 2003 in the North Central City of Makurdi in Benue State. Neither of us envisaged that 16 years later we will be saddled by the Almighty God Himself with the herculean task of building a United Kogi State characterised by Peace, Progress and Prosperity. Detractors who are trying to chop down this mighty iroko today by plucking off a few fruits and leaves here and there are wasting their lives. Our
roots go down to the bedrock of divine favour and human labour. I am amazed myself at the lengths the Almighty God has gone to preserve us and the assignment He has given us. My friendly warning to our would-be foes is to repent and desist. Without exception, every single hand which has risen against us on this journey have turned leprous and made the owners outcasts in society. One funny fellow once declared that “anybody fighting Bello is fighting God”. I believed him and have been properly guided since. Sadly, he did not believe himself and after getting himself into too many troubles in his vain attempts to fight us, he was finally and spectacularly disgraced from relevance and reckoning just this last weekend (Saturday, November 30, 2019). So, to all the tatafo and bad-belle people and rumourmongers, we no send una. Make una free us, make we serve the Kogites wey vote us. But if una no gree by una own sef, una go gree by force when Baba God rise for us. As for those who have begun to lobby for offices in the coming dispensation, just note that there is nothing wrong with that one but if your strategy is to bad mouth others with fabricated lies and all manner of falsehoods, do yourself a favour and evaluate yourself first. What did you better than others in the last 4 years, including your performance at the polls. Just to avoid heartbreak o. “The lines are fallen unto us in pleasant places; yea, we have a goodly heritage.” Psalms 16:6. I’m a believer of the WORD. And, I give the whole of my attention to It as I am commanded to do – “Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time come”. Mathew 6:34. (The Message – MSG) Finally, let us remember that God has indeed blessed us as a state but it is in our hands to make or mar our Destiny. May God help us not to destroy it with our own mouths or hands.
