THE ROYAL QUOTES
HRM, DR. IDAKWO
AMEH OBONI II ATA IGALA Agabaidu, Ata Igala and Chairman, Kogi State Council of Chiefs.
“
“The lack of the knowledge of the history of the Igala people by our past and present national leaders is the bane of our advancement as a people. As early as 1841, Attah Amocheje had signed a treaty with the British, twenty years before Lagos signed a treaty with them in 1861. The Igala nation had been a very strong kingdom controlling commercial activities and navigation on the Niger River at Idah many years before the advent of the white man.”.
The above was part of the Royal speech delivered by His Royal Majesty, Agaba Idu, Dr. Idakwo Michael Ameh Oboni II, Ata Igala on the occasion of the celebration of his 3rd anniversary on the throne of his forefathers on Saturday 26th March, 2016 at the Ata Igala’s Palace, Idah.

Igalaland Today...
T
oday, the Igala nation has find itself in a standstill situation. This is however not sudden because the signs of such possibility has been up for sometimes but obviously ignored by those at the helms of affairs or not taken seriously. The unfortunate position we find ourselves today as a people is indeed very retrogressive, regrettable and painful. We are at a point that it seems we can not function together as a collective whole but can do exploits as individuals and this becomes even more worrisome and mysterious why it is so. We have our people in different fields of human endeavours making great impact, contributing immensely to humanity but not in Igalaland and where they do, it is easily politicized along certain divisions at the time. In the political sphere, we are loosing grounds greatly and badly too that if we do not go back to the drawing board it may take us very long time to take our rightful place as a people and given the fact that democracy is a game of number we must act right then. Recent
Arise Igala-Issue 31
activities have shown clearly how we calculate and over calculate to outdo ourselves by our good or selfish intentions and interests. This situation should not be allowed to continue if our leaders are truly concerned about the welfare of the people. The worst of it all is that we are almost knocked out politically in this very political dispensation with our Senate Seat still empty, our Reps almost lost in the crowd and the gubernatorial tussle still ongoing. What could be worse for a people who at a point have had a political party on which platform they contested for the presidency of this great country and today they jostle for junior minister’s position since one of their own was there and then death suddenly removed him? In Igalaland where sanctity of human life is held in high esteem we now see death caused by other mortals with unimaginable level of impunity and this defile the land. The rate of poverty is high in the land and the worst of it is the poverty of knowledge, understanding and ideas. We
are so tied to certain policies and customs that have not allowed us to move on. This development is affecting our youths so badly that many now depend on others to survive instead of standing up for themselves. It’s becoming too bad that almost everyone is blaming the other man for his own failures forgetting his own roles in life. We can not and should not continue on this path. On this note, I am appealing to all Igala sons and daughters to take the responsibility of mentoring seriously. Our people need the right education. Such education that will reform them to become who they are supposed to be in this 21st Century and beyond. The orientation of the people need a great change and that can easily come by conscious efforts by the elites and the privileged who have really gotten right. There is need for such people to give back to the land by way of education, mentoring and investing in those areas that can help the land grow out of its current situation. Arise! 9

Tomorrow Will Surely Come
T
here’s no stopping tomorrow from coming as long as time tic-tac away it will surely come. It is only natural for tomorrow to come as a new day. So, it is very true that today was the tomorrow of yesterday therefore we must be very careful of what we do when another opportunity comes to us to correct the wrongs made earlier.
With every new day coming with new opportunities, we must as individuals and groups wake up to the task of fixing the errors of the past while we work consciously to build a better tomorrow from today. It is in view of the new opportunities that everyday brings our way that the ARISE IGALA LEADERSHIP AWARDS/LECTURES 2016 has its theme as “Growing National Economy Through Community Based Participation, Investment and Development. This is to gather information from various experts and disseminate same to the people so that we can wake up to the challenges that confronts us and to also see areas that we can begin to make our contributions from our various quarters either big or small. Therefore, we urge the good people of Igalaland, Kogites and Nigerians at large to be conscious of this fact that tomorrow will surely come and when it comes, the question will be what is/are your contributions to the society you live in and to the lives of the people around you. It is our sincere desire that our responses to the question be definite and very positive.

COVER STORY
The Mystery Behind The Place Called Home Engineer Michael Ojima Friday, an ambassador of peace, young, dynamic and enterprising gentleman whose growth and impact still remain very amazing to many is not ready to stop moving up yet. He spoke with our team at Anyigba as one of his ventures, Good Shepherd Medical Centre turned 3 and his words were very inspirational as he talks about the importance of investing at home for the benefit of the people. EXCERPTS: Can we meet you?
G 12
ood morning. My name is Michael Ojima Friday and by God’s
grace I am the Managing Director of Vivid Group and the President/CEO, Good Shepherd Medical Centres. Also, I am the President of
Michael Friday Foundation. What is the inspiration behind the Good Shepherd Medical Centre? Yes, it is purely a divine mandate from inception and so far so good it’s meeting the divine purpose. Initially, I had the vision and passion of bringing suitable and affordable medical care to our region, our community, our village and our home. This passion was fired up when I encountered a very painful and unforgettable situation; I was in the village and suddenly I got a call
Arise Igala-Issue 31
to help carry a woman in labour to a nearby hospital but unfortunately we visited 4 medical outfits and there were no medical personnel on duty at the hour to help us out until we lost one of the babies as only one eventually survived. The experience was an ugly one and I said to myself since that day that I can’t watch this to continue and so I worked hard to fulfil this part of my dreams. Once the opportunity came, I never hesitated - I moved into action and this medical project was commissioned on 1st of April, 2013 (3 years now) and the rest is testimonies of what God has been doing through the Good Shepherd Medical

very important as it will determine the perspective of people towards it in relation to our objective which is not totally profit driven; we have a touch of charity built into its services so that we can help our people get the best of medical services obtainable around the world yet affordable though in our domain. So, when you view the name from the perspective of the shepherd you will be convinced that it is primarily about care. Caring for the people healthwise at all cost. From economic point of view, can the good shepherd approach sustain this medical project in this region? Honestly, if it is purely profit driven then I will say it is an absolute economic mistake that any private venture will want to attempt in view of our equipments, qualified medical officers and the kind of services rendered here. If it is, then the best place to set up this kind of project 13
COVER STORY would have been places like Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt and other big cities but our desire was different because I am on a mission to fulfil my vision of bringing the best of medical services very closer to our people. Also, one significant thing we have achieved and will sustain is to walk into the medical centre at any hour of the day and night and you must meet a doctor on duty and others that will attend to medical situations. And, this has really given us an edge over other medical facilities around this region. How many full-time doctors do you have in this centre? We have two full-time medical doctors and three other visiting consultants. So, in total we can say we have five medical doctors managing this facility. This is because of the nature of our income here since we have decided to beat down cost of services to the very minimum with high level of services. So, we adopt this method to
“
Side View Of The Complex help us cater for our financial needs. One of my happiness about the system we operate here is that our doctors and all the other medical personnel here bought into our vision 100% and we are working progressively as a team. Are the services here subsidized in any way and if yes, by who? By the grace of God, yes, our services are really subsidized so that the people we want

to serve can get the best of health service they need. I do this through my businesses, charity and other means that may be available at anytime. So far, so good God has been faithful to me, my team and the project is growing. Am glad that we are serving our people in this way because it is my dream and so the pleasure is all mine irrespective of the cost. You are 3 years now and what’s your target for the next 3 years? My vision in the next 3 years is to raise our services at Good Shepherd Medical Centre to a higher global level that our people may not need to go elsewhere in this country to seek for medical help. I am even working harder to discourage our people travelling out of the country when we can render the same medical services they may be seeking abroad. I have a vision of expanding the medical centre to a Arise Igala-Issue 31
COVER STORY bigger one that will house an MRI, CT Scan, all manner of medical equipments, name it, we will do our best to make them available to serve the medical needs of the people. Igalaland is a nation, so we must work hard to bring in the very best to serve the land better. What’s your appeal to Igala sons and daughters who are well-to-do all across the globe? First, there is no other place we can call our home irrespective of where we may find ourselves today be it USA, UK, UAE, Saudi, Canada and all the rest. So, after all, you will want to come back home someday and even for those who wouldn’t make it in their lifetime, there’s always that
unquenchable urge to come home and so the connection to one’s home of origin is still a mystery to me. Yes, a very big mystery - Just imagine that Honourable, Senator, Director, Business Mogul and so on racing 120km, 140km and even sometimes 160km on the Abuja express heading “home” to meet his kindred. That person left his/her airconditioned home in Abuja, Lagos Port Harcourt all for one small village somewhere and at a point he/she will navigate from that express road to a very bad one that’s not tarred when he/she comes to the junction of his village and so the journey will continue in a very bad condition to his destination. Now, is that not a mystery? If there’s nothing unique about
the place of your birth or your origin then why would you engage in the rush and and all the risks on the road to come “home” where there’s no AC, no electricity and sometimes caught off from communication and yet one will be comfortable at “home”. So, failing to identify with your place of origin, your own home is a fundamental failure no matter the level of attainment in life. Therefore, investing in your home is critical, key and a must if you are blessed in any way. It is on this note that I visit home often and it connects me to the reality of my home and so am not carried away easily by what I see outside as I am always reminded of the challenges at “home”.

he Good Shepherd Medical Centre project was commissioned on 1st of April, 2013 and full medical operation commenced same day. Since then, the centre has been involved in providing medical care to the people in manner they never expected in the area. Marking this year’s anniversary, the centre rendered free medical services to patients on April 1, 2016 as it is the culture of the centre on every 1st April. At the medical facility, our team spoke with HRH, Sir Dr. Jacob Ocheni Odiba, JP, The Odoma Ata Igala who was at the centre that day to receive medical care and here is what he has to say: “This medical centre has improved the health of our people and has equally increased awareness of the people that

they can get treatment for certain health challenges which seem impossible in the past. At the centre, lots of emergencies have been attended to and so many accidents victims have been rescued here by the speed the health officers respond to such emergencies. It is obvious that people in this region are benefiting tremendously through the Good Shepherd Medical Centre, Anyigba. The most unique thing about the people here is their caring approach towards patients; they treat their patients with such care that is rare around this area and this certainly distinguishes them. It’s my honest opinion that Engr. Michael Ojima Friday and the team of medical personnel here are really living up to the name of the hospital and I pray God reward them bountifully”. 25

We Can Rise Again T
he binding chord is broken, the sticks unbound. This is not freedom, it is disunity. We stood together, we won. Now that we ought to sit and bask in our victory, the wrong ones infiltrated, made use of some of us and untied the chord binding us. Where were the elders, the watchmen and the caretakers? Where were the strong men, the eyes of the city and the pillars we all held unto? Chaos came, cacophony of sounds... not music but wailings all over our entire land. Breakfast of ashes and night clothes all day! Who did this to us? How
Arise Igala-Issue 31
did we find ourselves here? Look how they come to sit with us, to mourn meanwhile their heart if filled with pleasure for our pains... see how they stand in the dark courting those who broke our chords! I am not strong enough, but I want to join my strength with yours; I am not that long to hold all together but my hand in your hand and yours in another can help form the long chord we need to tie our broom. We may have been beaten, shattered and scattered; we may have lost the battle but we can’t sit, watch and lose
the war. We can rise again if we can come together again as one. Let us come together and build our broken walls against the enemies of unity; let us jealously guide our togetherness for that is where our strength lies. “The strength of a broom lies in its number” they said but all it takes for a big bunch of unbounded broom to remain a single stick is time. Our voice must be one, we must stand together to win this war. I stand with the people, as we arise take back our rightful place in the Nigeria project! 29

a Shofolahan was never a father in-law but actually my dad who was not my biological father. I’m bold to say this because through out his life span and from the year I met him (over 25 years ago), he took me as his biological son and never treated me as an in-law. He accepted me unconditionally and he related with me the same way he related with his sons. Above all, he gave me my jewel for which no money can buy. A woman

of very high moral quality who helped to shape my life and style in a manner pleased God. He more or less adopted me as his son since I lost my biological father at the age 13. He was interested in everything I was doing. He was a very good Christian and a man of God and of the people. Surprisingly, he was a politician and was an elected councillor in old Somolu LGA. He was always there offering advise and prayers for success
in my career. While on his sick bed, he prayed and told me that i will win the tribunal case and up to Supreme Court and become the first Yoruba Governor of Kogi State. I believe because God is good all the time. God will take the Glory of the victory IJN (Amen). We never had any reason to disagree. As a family, we will miss him forever but take solace in God that he has gone to rest in the Lord. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.

He was a chieftain of UNCP, a party that won majority of Local Government Election in Lagos State and the whole of the South-West states. He served the community diligently, made significant improvement and changes to his constituency for all to see and admire. His impressive performance was recognized , thus he was nominated unopposed by his party to represent his constituency at the Federal House of Representatives. Unfortunately, he declined the nomination due to the peculiar closeness he had with his aged mother. Instead, he decided to remain in local politics where his contributions were invaluable in the nomination and decision making within his party. Pa Shofolahan is an exemplary person and could be described as “One man with many great branches. He touched and made positive impact on lives of many people regardless of their background. He did not believe in class society, hence his door was always open and he associated with all. Although death is extremely painful when it happened (even at old age) it leaves behind sorrow, pain and agony but for our beloved father, Pa Joseph Oluyinka Shofolahan, it is a celebration of life. He was blessed with many children, grand children and great-grand children. Pa, we will always remember you for your passion, love, peace, humility and gentle nature that transcend every storm of life. Your spirit of generosity and kindness to all with immense manifestation for good in the fear of God. May your gentle soul rest in perfect peace. (This BIOGRAPHY is from the Family Source) 6
