THE ROYAL MESSAGE
THE ROYAL MESSAGE
HRM, AGABA IDU
THE ROYAL MESSAGE BY HIS ROYAL MAJESTY, DR. IDAKWO MICHAEL AMEH OBONI, ATA IGALA AND CHAIRMAN, KOGI STATE COUNCIL OF CHIEFS ON THE OCCASION OF THE 2015 ARISE IGALA LEADERSHIP AWARDS/LECTURES WHICH HELD ON 23RD MAY, 2015 AT LADI KWALI HALL SHERATON HOTELS AND TOWER, ABUJA. REPRESENTED BY HON. BALA ZAKARI
own sacrifice for Igala Kingdom. I charge all sons and daughters to lend their support to this noble cause so that the sweat and toils of these young, talented, brilliant and bold sons of ours will not be in vain. I always feel proud whenever I hold copies of ARISE IGALA magazine. Igala race is proud of you.
(PROTOCOL OBSERVED)
I
t’s my utmost pleasure and delight to welcome you all to the 2015 edition of ARISE IGALA LEADERSHIP AWARDS/LECTURES. Sometimes last year, on 29th March precisely, we were gathered here in large numbers to celebrate Igala sons and daughters and other distinguished Nigerians who have made great impact on the lives of people and to rob minds with one another on socio-economic, political and cultural challenges that confront us as a people and to fashion the way out of the problems. Those who attended the event will bear me witness that it was a great evening and the memories are still fresh our minds.
I’m particular pleased about the theme of the lecture which is “Princess Inikpi and the Culture of Sacrificial Leadership: Imperative for National Development.” Personally, I consider this theme as timely and relevant to the Igala nation and Nigeria as a whole. As you know, Princess Inikpi of blessed memory, the beloved daughter of my great grandfather, was sacrificed many years ago for the preservation of Igala race. Her death was a painful one, yet it was worth it. The story of her death is a big challenge to all Igala sons and daughters; that there is nothing too big to offer
4
AMEH OBONI II ATA IGALA
as far as Igala cause is concerned. The willingness of Princess Inikpi to sacrifice her life for our dear Igala Kingdom has earned her our eternal gratitude. Though she died at a tender age, but her deed has outlived her. There were many females and women before her, but the story of the Great Igala Kingdom cannot be complete without a mention of her. This is the best life to live!! Igala is a great Kingdom, no doubt. Our sons and daughters are successful in every sphere of our national endeavour, but we need to do more. Let me remind you all at this juncture that there is acute hunger, poverty, unemployment and mass illiteracy in Igalaland, an indication that someone somewhere has failed to make sacrifice. Sacrificial leadership places Igala Kingdom above self, political party, religion and other personal interests; it places service above self. Therefore, show me a Kingdom where sacrifice abounds, I’ll show you a prosperous Kingdom. Igala Kingdom cannot attain the expected height without sacrifice of some sorts. Those we are here to celebrate today have paid their prices and someone somewhere acknowledges their selfless efforts. We should all be encouraged to do same and even more, as good deed
is the most glorious task expected from mankind. Last year, during the maiden ARISE IGALA AWARDS, I did say that “in the last few years, ARISE IGALA Magazine, as its primary focus, has consistently projected the Igala Nation and promoted our people by showcasing and capturing our cultural identity which is crucial to realizing our aspirations for development. This Magazine, like a lone voice in the wilderness has been celebrating, inspiring and challenging Igala sons and daughters both at home and in the Diaspora to venture into enterprises that benefit the Igala as a people and humanity as a whole. It has remained the most informative, educative and above all, a very reliable source of information on our history as a people and on contemporary issues on Igala Kingdom.” I commend the tenacity, commitments and patriotism of the ARISE IGALA Team, spearheaded by two of our illustrious sons, Onoja J. Okpanichi, Publisher and Chief Editor, and Nathan Oguche Emmanuel, the Managing Editor. I celebrate you for your passion, zeal and dedication towards uniting Igala sons and daughters, irrespective of party affiliations, religious backgrounds and personal ideologies. This is part of their
Arise Igala-Issue 23
On this special occasion, sons and daughters, I want to reassure you that the Igala Traditional Council is greatly committed to the development and prosperity of the Kingdom and I enjoin all sons and daughters to make conscious efforts towards building manufacturing industries in Igalaland. The land is blessed with abundant natural and human resources. When there are industries in the Land, there will be reduction of poverty, hunger and joblessness. My dear Igala sons and daughters, I implore you to take this message home; there is no sacrifice that is too much to make for Igalaland. I wish you all a memorable and eventful evening and may God grant you all journey mercies back to your various destinations. May God bless Igala Nation May God bless Kogi State May god the Kwararafa Kingdom May God Bless Nigeria

Alh. Yahaya Bello
(Fair Plus)
Receives Royal Blessings From Ata Igala
HRM, DR, IDAKWO MICHAEL AMEH OBONI II
A
lh. Yahaya Bello (FairPlus), an energetic, focused and determined young Kogite who is aiming the number one seat at Lugard House in the forthcoming Gubernatorial Election in Kogi state is leaving no stone unturned. He is the Chairman of Kogi Youth Arise Group which has been moving round the state to garner supports from all in a bid to achieve the common goal that will better the lots of all Kogi people irrespective of tribe, religion and economic class. Hon. Edward Onoja describes Alh. Yahaya Bello to HRM, Dr. Idakwo Ameh Oboni II, Agabaidu, Ata Igala as a young Kogite who is dynamic, honest and in whom they have confidence that the State Treasury will be safe and managed for the benefit of all Kogites. He went further to present him as a detribalized son of the soil who has high regards for traditional institution and equally driven with great passion

to see a new Kogi delivered in the coming gubernatorial election. Alh. Yahaya Bello presented 3 separate bowls of Kola nuts to HRM, Ata Igala; one for the Elders, another for the youth and the third for the generation yet unborn. He made his mission clear before the royal father. He stated that his quest for the Lugard House is to bring about the desired change and much needed development in the state. Alh. Yahaya Bello promised that if given the opportunity to serve, the state treasury will be for the good of all and not select few. He assured that Kogi state under his watch will be void of tribalizing and so he asked for the royal blessing from Ata Igala. In responding to the presentations, HRM, Dr. Idakwo Ameh Oboni II, Ata Igala welcomes the illustrious sons and daughters of the state. His Majesty noted that “there is no better self examination other than looking
at the mirror” because it brings out the clear picture. It’s about the true reflection of the real thing. It was in this light that HRM, Ata Igala sees the visit which took place on Saturday, June 6, 2015 since the presentations mirror the obvious in our various societies today across the state. The royal father went ahead to list the numerous mineral resources which God has blessed the state with alongside great human resources and concludes that we have no reason to fail as a state. He advised that money shouldn’t be the priority as the negative impact it is what His Majesty presents in this order as “God made man, man made money and money make man mad”. The Ata Igala calls on all Kogites to unite for better days ahead as he emphasized that the Confluence is a meeting point of intelligence, a centre of the great and so we must team up to present our best.

WE HAVE DECIDED...
T
he ARISE IGALA LEADERSHIP AWARDS/LECTURES have come to stay as an annual event where we will be celebrating, inspiring and challenging the people into positive ventures for the benefit of mankind. At this year’s event we focused on sacrificial leadership as a vital ingredient that can bring about better performance by people and leaders in particular for a better society. The theme, ‘Princess Inikpi and the Culture of Sacrificial Leadership: Imperative for National Development’ was well treated by the team of distinguished Professors who handled the affairs of the Lecture and Discussion Session of the event.
The 8th National Development Summit of Traditional Rulers took place at the Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja on Thursday, May 21, 2015 with the theme ‘Consolidating Nigeria’s Peace and Unity in Democratic Advancement’. At the occasion, HRM, Dr. Idakwo Ameh Oboni II, Agabaidu, Ata Igala and Chairman, Kogi State Council of Chiefs made a remarkable presentation pointing out the centrality of the Igala people as very core to the existence of Nigeria and so will do all that is necessary to uphold her unity. 10
Arise Igala-Issue 23
The ARISE IGALA MAGAZINE team has long decided to leave the league of complainers; we have since left the group that only sit to criticise elders and past leaders while their own time gradually roll away. We took upon us the responsibility to look inward and fix the fixable and where possible start all over instead of dwelling on the unproductive past. It’s on Arise Igala-Issue 23
this note that we strongly hold onto the annual AWARDS/LECTURES as one of the veritable means of celebrating, inspiring and challenging the people into positive ventures for the benefit of mankind. In achieving these set objectives, we have also made it a culture to take the annual event outside the shores of Igalaland so that we can continue to expose the very good sides and great people of Igala Kingdom to the outside world. It is our responsibility to sell the good image of the people to the global community. Through this act we are also opening new frontiers for our people as we will be celebrating other distinguished Nigerians and Africans which is a form of integrating the people to other cultures of the world. This is our choice, our decision and so we will give anything within our reach and even dare to go extra mile to keep it alive, always. Therefore, I want to assure our teeming readers, followers, supporters and investors of better and progressive outing every year. Arise! 11

In one of Professor Ahmed Yerima’s play, Kaffir’s Last Game, a two-character play; “Mbulelo a South African ex-student now a big man in ANC and Professor his teacher when he was in Nigeria as a refugee student, meet at the Airport in South Africa where Professor had decided to take a teaching job since he could not survive in Nigeria due to the hardship of academicians.”This dialogue ensued between the Professor and his erstwhile student, Mbulelo: MBULELO: Sir, what do you do with your heroes? PROFESSOR: Heroes? We bury them. MBULELO: So you do not use them while they are alive? PROFESSOR: No. They only become heroes when they are dead. When they become inactive, silent and very dead… MBULELO: Our heroes never die. We sing songs for them as if they are standing before us... (Yerima, Kafir’s 1997: 36)
MEET
AKUBO ADEGBE
Do we have Heroes who are still alive in Igalaland and Nigeria today? Why is it so hard for the Igala to have living legends? Why are all our Heroes buried in the past? If Ata Ameh Oboni, Ata the Great were alive today, would Igala people revere him the manner we do today? If Princess Inikpi were alive today and began to live like every Princess, would some people not accuse her of being overzealous? Would her contemporaries not spit or throw venomous attacks on her for preserving her purity, virginity and her pride of womanhood in the first place? If Dr. Stephen Makoji Achema (Alapa) were alive today, would Igala not smash him with stack of criticisms for belonging to either opposition or ruling party? That someone is a Hero does not make the fellow a supernatural existential, or flawless in character.
ARISE IGALA MAN OF THE YEAR
About a year ago, ARISE IGALA LEADERSHIP AWARDS/LECTURES was birthed to stir a generational change in the leadership circles by celebrating those who have made modest marks in their chosen endeavours. The essence of the AWARD is to appreciate the true leaders while they are still alive, thereby inspiring the upcoming leaders as they journey through the leadership ladder. ARISE IGALA magazine, not disillusioned or oblivious of the current leadership challenges where leaders who are meant to serve end up serving themselves and their cronies, feeding fat on our collective patrimony, but ARISE IGALA strives to sieve and sift, with the aid of our moral and editorial radars, the persona of those who are qualified to put on the royal regalia of our prestigious awards.
Mr. AKUBO ADEGBE is the ARISE IGALA MAN OF THE YEAR. This honour was bestowed on him at the recently held ARISE IGALA LEADERSHIP AWARDS/ LECTURES 2015 on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at the prestigious Ladi Kwali Hall, Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Abuja. Shortly after the event, ARISE IGALA MAGAZINE hooked up with him for an interview. Find below his views and responses to the various questions posed to him.
Indeed, Saturday, the 23rd of May, 2015 was indeed a historic day for the Igala sons and daughters at the prestigious Ladi Kwali Hall, Sheraton Hotel and Tower, Abuja as the ARISE IGALA Magazine held its 2nd edition of the ARISE IGALA LEADERSHP AWARDS/LECTURES, a pan-Igala event which some observers describe as the most prestigious Igala event ever organized. With the presence of six respected Professors on the podium, to describe the event as one evening, many Professors would not be an understatement. Professor Ahmed Yerima, a cultural administrator, lecturer and award-winning Playwright who has written over sixty plays was the guest lecturer; Professor Emmy Ikanaba Unuja Idegu, an award winning professor of dramaturgy whose work, The Legendary Inikpi was staged as Command Performance by the African-Israeli Stage and the Academy of Performing Arts of Israel in ZAO Theatre, Tel Aviv, Israel was there on the stage too. Others who were present are: Professor Sam Egwu, a professor of political economy and development studies who has at different times given policy direction to Nigeria and other third world nations; Professor Doris Laruba Adejoh – Obieje, a Professor of Francophone African Women Writing at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; Professor Aaron Baba, an accomplished academic both in Nigeria and in the United States of America whose areas of research interests span Photochemistry, Corrosion and Chemical sensors and Professor Paul Omojo Omaji, a Professor of Criminology and Vice Chancellor Emeritus who has provided policy advice at ministerial levels and led his teams to deliver successful implementation of government programmes in local communities and overseas countries, including the US, UK, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, the Czech Republic, Italy and France. EDITORIAL INTERVIEW INTERVIEW
INTERVIEW
ARISE IGALA MAN OF THE YEAR Who is Mr. Akubo Adegbe?
M
r Akubo Adegbe is a passionate Nigerian who believes that it is time for Kogi state and Nigeria to move away from potential to actual greatness. He believes that the Nigerian youth holds the key to that greatness. How do you see the recent honour as the ARISE IGALA MAN OF THE YEAR; an achievement or a call to higher responsibilities? I see the honour as a call to higher responsibilities. Like they say ‘the reward for hard work is more work’ From your personal experience, what’s leadership and how does it affect the performance of organization, state and nation? Leadership is a position of trust and responsibility. It is an opportunity given to a person or group of people to manage the commonwealth of a state, nation or an organization. In my experience, leadership determines whether an organization, a state or a nation maximizes its potential because since the people will always take the character of the leadership. If leaders have vision and the will to make things happen, the state will succeed, if they don’t, the obvious opposite is the case no matter the intent Coming home, what do you think of the current state of our dear state, Kogi, are we on the right path? My thoughts on Kogi state are unfortunately that of grief and sadness. We have not been on the right path for a long time. Sadness and 14
grief because if we continue on the current path, we are going nowhere Unofficially, many people see Kogi state as the least in Nigeria today in terms of development in all ramifications and the welfare of its citizenry. How do you feel about this ugly situation when we have lots of natural resources and the human potentials in abundance? Do you think this is reversible, how? I wish I could disagree with the notion held by many people. If I do, I will be playing the Ostrich. Like I said before, I feel sad that we are in this position. I however think that this is reversible because Kogi people have all it takes to reverse it. If we have quality, patriotic, unselfish and visionary leadership that will harness all the talent and skills in the state, to develop our well-advertised natural resources only then can we will reverse this trend quickly In building a better Kogi state for all, what roles would you advise the Kogi youths to play and what practical steps do you think can assure them of a better future? The Kogi youth needs to first of all look inwards and take personal responsibility. The state is said to have a population of about 3.9m people, most of who constitute the youth population. This means that they have the power. So first of all, they need to take responsibility for electing the right leaders— leaders that will address the issues that are important to them. Then they need to take responsibility for the development of the state since nobody else will do that for them. They have the brains, network, energy and power to make things happen. Arise Igala-Issue 23
MR. AKUBO ADEGBE
ARISE IGALA MAN OF THE YEAR
Today, there’s this general perception by political leaders on the payment of salaries being considered as achievement as some states are finding it difficult due to the fact that states largely depend on federal allocations. What’s your take on this and what do you think a state like Kogi can do to go beyond this point? If payment of salaries is an achievement, then we are doomed. That states are largely dependent on federal allocations to function is obviously the result of a lack of creative leadership. My view of federal allocations is that it is simply a ‘social security’ and not a fund for development. For Kogi to go beyond this point, we have to go back to what I said before—harness our potential. If you are to bring your experience to play in the state, how would you help the Kogi youths realize their full potentials? I have worked on the economic development projects geared at empowering the Nigerian youth, at the national level. I have also worked with young people on other platforms. What I find with the Nigerian and Kogi youth is that they have been starved of the opportunity to express themselves. My experiences have shown me that if we give the Kogi youth a platform to learn valuable skills and unleash their entrepreneurial drives, they will realize their full potential. Arise Igala-Issue 23
Sir, Kogi state being one of the multi-cultural states in Nigeria, how best do you think it’s cultural and ethnic differences can be harnessed and managed for the benefit of the state? I will like to state categorically that Kogi’s diversity is a great asset for development. This is because, different sections of the state have developmental values that we can tap into to move the state forward. Our diversity also provides us with a great tourism potential that we can commercialize for maximum benefits. My vision for Kogi is therefore a state where all ethnic groups unite and put their best foot forward for the collective development of the state Finally, given the wealth of your experience and the need for good leadership in the state, would you offer yourself for the service of the state if the need arises or called upon? Are you prepared? I think that my passion for Nigeria and the state coupled with my education and work experiences in banking, international development, entrepreneurship development, business management, consulting and public service have prepared me for leadership. Yes I will offer myself for the service of the state since my dream is to have a Kogi state I can finally be proud of.

THE CHAIRMAN’S SPEACH
THE CHAIRMAN’S SPEACH
THE REMARKS PRESENTED BY HAJIYA BARR. HALIMA ALFA, CHAIRPERSON OF THE 2015 ARISE IGALA LEADERSHIP AWARDS/ LECTURES WHICH HELD ON 23RD MAY, 2015 AT LADI KWALI HALL, SHERATON HOTELS AND TOWER, ABUJA.
W
e’re here today because someone made a sacrifice and the person was a woman!! I therefore consider the theme of the lecture as timely and apt. This event came at a time when the expectations of Nigerians from their leaders are so much, even if it means sacrificing their lives in order to move the country from its current sociopolitical and economic doldrums. Also, the event coincides with the 5th Centenary of the sacrificial death of Princess Inikpi, the woman who died sometimes in 1515 AD. I therefore consider this event as a celebration of sterling, sacrificial and selfless dispositions of Igala woman.
(Protocol observed) t’s with great joy and honour to welcome you to the 2015 ARISE IGALA LEADERSHIP AWARDS/LECTURES. Sincerely, I’m delighted to be the Chairperson of this highly organized and auspicious event. Let me quickly add however, that having a woman as Chairperson of this edition of ARISE IGALA AWARDS/LECTURES did not come to me as a surprise, especially after looking at the theme of the Lecture which is “Princess Inikpi and the Culture of Sacrificial Leadership: Imperative for National Development”.
I
16
Arise Igala-Issue 23
At this juncture, let me ask this in rhetoric: where were the men folks when Princess Inikpi offered to sacrifice her life for the preservation of Igala Kingdom? Where were the Achimugus, the Atulukus, the Abimajes, the Idachabas when Princess Inikpi offered to sacrifice her life? The men went for hunting expedition or to harvest palm fruits, I supposed!!! In our male-dominated society, when the going gets tough, it’s only the Inikpis that can get going!!! Ladies and gentle men, I want to use this opportunity to thank the organizers of this great event. There is no gainsaying that lots of energy, strength, time and intellect have been poured into an event of this magnitude and the success of this event is an indication that the organizers have imbibed the spirit of Inikpi. I strongly believe that ARISE IGALA Magazine, is and will remain for many years to come, the most vocal voice in Igala cultural-renaissance. I implore you to be Arise Igala-Issue 23
resilient, focus and even more determined to raise the socio-economic and political consciousness of our people. On this note, I want to congratulate the ARISE IGALA Team for packaging one of the most beautiful panIgala events I have ever seen. Please, don’t give up on your dreams even if the skies get rough. As you all know, Nigeria is marching towards a new horizon. In this new horizon, one virtue that is essential and required for us to make meaningful progress is selfdenial. The change mantra will become a mirage if excellence is sacrificed on the altar of personal prejudices and gains. The new Nigeria should integrate self-denial into the national leadership circles. Always remember that sacrificial leadership is all about laying down one’s life for something greater and bigger than oneself. Sometime, it is about giving up everything that you have ever known; every friend you have ever made and every comfort you have acquired. Let us therefore make it a point of duty to make conscious sacrifices for national development. On this note, I hereby formally declare the 2015 ARISE IGALA LEADERSHIP AWARD/ LECTURE open. I wish you all a mind-blowing evening. Thank you and God bless. Hajiya Barr. Halimat Alfa

n Saturday the 23rd of May 2015 was indeed a historic day for the Igala sons and daughters at the prestigious Ladi Kwali Hall, Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Abuja as the ARISE IGALA Magazine held its 2nd edition of the ARISE IGALA LEADERSHP AWARDS/LECTURES, a pan-Igala event which some observers describe as the most prestigious Igala event ever organized. The ARISE IGALA OJOCHIDE YUSUF-NATHAN and SALAMATU IYE-OGODO SULE were there and wrote this report. ABOUT THE EVENT According to Onoja J. Okpanachi, the Publisher/Chief Editor of ARISE IGALA
Arise Igala-Issue 23
magazine, the essence of the awards is to celebrate the true patriotic sons and daughters of the land who have in their various ways contributed immensely to the kingdom and humanity through sacrificial leadership. The annual event, according to Onoja, has become a formidable platform where Igala sons and daughters gather to engage in social, political and cultural challenges that confront Igala as a people and Nigeria as a whole. He said the essence of the awards was to appreciate the true leaders while they are still alive to encourage upcoming leaders while also encouraging them to do more. The maiden award was in 2014, and it was well attended just like the 2015 edition. 19
FOCUS FOCUS ONE EVENING, MANY PROFESSORS One of the most remarkable parts of the event was the lecture session which brought Professors from different backgrounds together to discuss sacrificial. The guest lecturer, Professor Ahmed Yerima, a cultural administrator, lecturer and award-winning Playwright who has written over sixty plays, including The Trials of Ovonramwen, Attahiru, Yemoja and Idemili, presented a well-researched and articulated paper, entitled: Princess Inikpi and the Culture of Sacrificial Leadership: Imperative for National Development. Professor Ahmed Yerima did justice to the paper when he defined the role of Inikpi in the context of sacrifice as service to her fatherland as well as

FOCUS FOCUS a pledge towards selfless leadership, a quality which he said would be difficult to find in our modern time. Yerima opined that for a true renaissance to be restored in Igalaland and Nigeria as a whole, such culture of selfless service must be revived for a true democratic Nigeria. Other Professors who made stimulating contributions where Professor Emmy Ikanaba Unuja Idegu, an award winning professor of dramaturgy whose work, The Legendary Inikpi was staged as Command Performance by the African-Israeli Stage and the Academy of Performing Arts of Israel in ZAO Theatre, Tel Aviv, Israel; Professor Sam Egwu, a professor of political economy and development studies who has at different times given policy direction to Nigeria and other third world nations. Others were: Professor Doris Laruba Adejoh – Obieje, a Professor of Francophone African Women Writing at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and Professor Aaron Baba, an accomplished academic both in Nigeria and in the United States of America whose areas of research interests span Photochemistry, Corrosion and Chemical sensors and Professor Paul Omojo Omaji, a Professor of Criminology and Vice Chancellor Emeritus who has provided policy advice at ministerial levels and led his teams to deliver successful implementation of government programmes in local communities and overseas countries, including
the US, UK, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, the Czech Republic, Italy and France. THE ROYAL MESSAGE… His Royal Majesty, Dr. Michael Idakwo Ameh Oboni, Ata Igala and the Chariman of Kogi State Council of Chiefs, who was ably represented by Hon. Bala Zakari, was emotional reminiscing on the death of Inikpi, the Princess whom he described as the “beloved daughter of my Great Grandfather”. According to him, Princess Inikpi died a painful death, “yet it was worth it”. Agabaidu added that the story of Princess Inikpi was a big challenge to all Igala sons and daughters, saying that as a true son or daughter, there was nothing too big as far as Igala cause is concerned. “The willingness of Princess Inikpi to sacrifice her life for our dear Igala Kingdom has earned her our eternal gratitude. Though she died at a tender age, but her deed has outlived her. There were many females and women before her, but the story of the Great Igala Kingdom cannot be complete without a mention of her. This is the best life to live!!” Agabaidu added. On the special occasion, Agabaidu Idakwo Michael Ameh Oboni also reassured all sons and daughters of the commitments of the Igala Traditional Council towards the development of Igalaland. He enjoined all and sundry to make concerted efforts towards establishing manufacturing industries in Arise Igala-Issue 23
the Land, adding that the presence of industries would bring about reduction of poverty, hunger and jobless. HAJIYA BAR. HALIMAT ALFA ASKED: “WHERE WERE THE MEN WHEN INIKPI OFFERED HER LIFE FOR SACRIFICE?” Hajiya Barr. Halimat Alfa, the quintessential Amazon, the first and the only Igala woman who has dared to contest for Governorship position in Kogi State and a Senatorial aspirant, who took part in the last PDP Senatorial primary that was marred with controversies, was the Chairperson of the occasion. In her remarks, Barr. Alfa applauded the tenacity of the womenfolk in sacrificial leadership vis-à-vis Inikpi story. She argued that when things get sour it is women that always come to rescue the situation. Hajiya Alfa therefore asked this in
Prof. Emmy U.I. Idegu
rhetoric: “where were the men folks when Princess Inikpi offered to sacrifice her life for the preservation of Igala Kingdom? Where were the Achimugus, the Atulukus, the Abimajes, the Idachabas when Princess Inikpi offered to sacrifice her life? The men went for hunting expedition or to harvest palm fruits, I supposed!!! In our maledominated society, when the going gets tough, it’s only the Inikpis that can get going!!!”
THE AWARDS RECIPIENTS The Awards were in three categories: The LEADERSHIP AWARDS, LIFE TIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS and the ARISE IGALA MAN OF THE YEAR. In the category of LEADERSHIP AWARDS, the following people were crowned for “Distinction and Excellence”; Professor Stephen Ikani Ocheni, HRH, Dr. Baba Muhammed, Dr. Moses Abu, JP, Dr. Ibrahim Wada and Comrade Sunday. CHIEF ARC. GABRIEL Y. ADUKU
REAR ADMR. ANDREW OKOJA
ARISE IGALA LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
ARISE IGALA LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Elder Arc. G.Y Aduku, a consummate architect, an upright politician, and an elder statesman, was born on 3rd February, 1944 in Anyigba, Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State. He acquired his early education at the CMML Mission School, Anyigba, Qua-Iboe Mission School, Ankpa, Qua-Iboe Mission School, Idah and the foremost Provincial Secondary School, Okene. After his Secondary Education, he proceeded to the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria where he studied Architecture. In the architectural landscape of Nigeria, Chief Aduku has left indelible imprints. Upon graduation, while his contemporaries were seeking for white-collar jobs, he took the pain to establish a firm, ARCHCON, an architectural firm that has trained many architects in Nigeria and has designed, supervised, built, and constructed giant edifices in the country. This is the reason why Chief Aduku is best known first, as a distinguished pioneer Architect in Nigeria. As a fellow and a past president of the Nigerian Institute of Architects, Chief Aduku is well celebrated and appreciated by colleagues. He is a Chartered Architect of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and a past president of Architects Registration Council of Nigeria. As a public servant, Chief G.Y Aduku is known for his transparency, accountability, and integrity. In all the public offices he has occupied, he graciously brought all these virtues to bear. He was one time Chairman of the Nigeria Merchant Bank Limited, the United Nigerian Insurance Company, Lower River Basin Development Authority. He was a member of the 1994/1995 Constitutional Conference where he was elected and served as the Chairman of the Revenue Allocation Committee, the architect of the controversial 13 per cent derivation formula now enshrined in the 1999 Nigerian constitution. Chief Aduku also served as Minister of State for Health. His various contributions to the political, economic, and social transformation of Igala Kingdom and the nation at large, meritoriously earned him the Traditional Title of Amana Ogohi I, Ata Igala and the Honours Award of the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON). Politically, Chief G.Y. Aduku can best be described as a proverbial cat with many lives. He had undeservedly suffered setbacks, tribulations and humiliation when he was Minister of State for Health as he was falsely accused by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). In order to allow unfettered investigation, Chief Aduku relinquished his ministerial position. However, for a man who can never trade his hard-earned reputation with riches and glory, Chief Aduku confidently submitted to due process of a legal redress. No less than seven distinguished Senior Advocates of Nigeria, led by Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim, OFR, SAN, volunteered to defend Chief Aduku at no cost. From the Federal High Court, Abuja to the Court of Appeal and the apex court, the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Chief Aduku was exonerated. No cabinet minister has had such a clean stamp in Nigeria. Notable Nigerians, including the current Attorney General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice, Hon. Muhammed Bello Adoke (SAN) had at different times, called on the Federal Government to apologise and compensate Chief Aduku for the injustice done him. Instead of being compensated as expected, the Federal Government has continued to keep mute over his matter. Despite all these, Chief Aduku remains committed to a just cause; he is still known for his rare sportsmanship and stewardship in Igalaland, Kogi State and his Party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP); the Party whose logo he painstakingly designed. No doubt, Chief Aduku’s is a bridge-builder and his influence and impacts cut across tribes, ethnic groups, religions and regions. He is well known and respected for his enviable mien that is principally anchored on integrity, accountability, selflessness, and resourcefulness. Yes, Chief Aduku is well favoured and honoured, yet humble and simple; he is a willing servant, desiring to serve rather than to be served; he gives his best for people to attain higher grounds, but will never fight to take credit for it; he has fostered many children as if he has no family of his own.
Rear Admiral Andrew Omaolo Stephen Okoja (rtd) MNIM, mni, was born on 24th May 1948. He hails from Ebu in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State. He had his early education in LA Primary School, Mara Mara, Zaria in Kaduna State before proceeding to Nigerian Military School, Zaria (1962-1966) where he had his secondary education. He proceeded to the Nigeria Defence Academy as Officer Cadet in 1967, in NDA course 3, and attained NDACE/’A’ Level certification before proceeding to Nigeria Navy to complete his naval training in 1969 as a Midshipman. He was commissioned into Nigeria Navy as Ag Sub-lieutenant in 1970. He had his basic and junior level Technical and Management training in India 1970-72, Specialist Course in India (1974), Precommission courses for Seward Defence Boat (SDB) and Corvet/Frigate (F) class warships 1973 and 1975 respectively in UK. He has had several sea commands of warships ranging from SDB to frigate class that saw him sail through five seas of the world in command and as a crew member. He commanded the renowned Nigerian Navy frigate and flag ship NNS Nigeria which was later renamed NNS Obuma (1985 – 1987). Rear Admiral Okoja had a four- year duty tour as Nigeria Defence Adviser to India (1987 – 1991) where he had concurrent accreditation to Australia, Peoples Republic of China and Philippines. He held the senior positions of Chief Staff Officer in Western Naval Command (1991), Dy Commandant, Command & Staff College Kaduna (1993), Chief of Logistics Naval Headquarters (1994), Chief of Administration (1995 – 1996) and Chief of Operations 1996 – 1997, before his retirement in (1998). Rear Admiral Okoja attended the prestigious National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru – Jos course 16 (1992-93). His post-service life saw him veering into sports where he became the Chairman of Nigeria Yachting and Rowing Federation, a position under the Federal Ministry of Sports which he held for one Olympic term of four (4) years. He later ventured into Maritime and Housing Sub-sector of the economy where he is the current Chairman of Rainbow BB Estate Solutions and Mercury Maritime Concession Company. Rear Admiral Okoja is a development zealous soul who has initiated and monitored to completion several large road construction projects in support of the economic and social interest of his community, LGA and state, notably; the AsabaEbu-Uromi Road, the Utor Bridge project which was commissioned on 17th October 2014 and the current RUNCID project (Rivers Utor-Niger Confluence Infrastructure Development) presently being considered by Federal Government. He is the brain child of the initiative that led to the presidential approval granted for the dualization of Asaba – Ebu – Uromi road. Rear Admiral Okoja is a devoted Catholic and Married with five children. In recognition of his selfless services to the nation, Ebu Community and humanity at large, ARISE IGALA Magazine has chosen Rear Admiral A.O.S Okoja (Rtd) to be conferred with the ARISE IGALA LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD.
Finally, those who know Chief Gabriel Yakubu Aduku regard him for his extreme simplicity; he is famous for his extreme humility; celebrated for his extreme generosity, and distinguished for his extreme transparency. It is against these antecedents that the ARISE IGALA Magazine has chosen Chief G.Y Aduku, to be honoured with the ARISE IGALA LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD.

Dr. Tom Ajayi Miachi, a consummate archaeologist, public administrator, a University lecturer and a social/community worker, was born at Iyale, Dekina District, in what is today called Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, on 12th December, 1947. At the age of nine, that is, in 1956, he enrolled at the Igala Native Authority (INA) Junior Primary School, Iyale and completed the Primary 4 class there before moving on to complete the other segment of his full Primary education (Senior Primary 5, 6, and 7) at the Senior Primary School, Dekina, between 1960 and 1962. In 1963, Dr. Miachi was enrolled at the Government Secondary School, Dekina, and five years later, in December, 1967, he completed the ordinary level secondary education, earning the West Africa School Certificate (WASC). It means that from the date of birth up till the end of his Secondary School education period, that is, for 21years, Dr. Miachi lived in Eastern Kogi State. Skipping over some years when pursuance of further education and work took him out of Kogi State, he came back again, this time, to work, first at the St. Peter’s College, Idah (Eastern Kogi), teaching, and later, at the Federal Polytechnic, Idah, lecturing. Both put together, he spent a total of 15 years of my life there at Idah, between May, 1978 and June, 1993. From Idah, he moved on to live in the Western flank of the River Niger in Kogi State, where he worked at the Ajaokuta Steel Company (ASCL) for 7.5 years, that is, between 1st July, 1993 when he joined Ajaokuta and 1st January, 2001 when he left for the Senior Executive Course, Number 23, Year 21, at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, for one year. For two years after his return from NIPSS, on the order of the Minister, he was moved to the Federal Ministry of Power and Steel Headquarters, Abuja, as Special Technical Assistant to the Minister of Power and Steel. Thus, even though his salary was being paid by ASCL, he was officially on duty posting in Abuja. That means that physically, he lived and worked in Kogi State on both sides of the River Niger for 43.5 years. Furthermore, in order to further identify himself with the hopes, aspirations and development strategies of our beloved State, on May 19th, 2010, he joined the services of the Kogi State University, Anyigba (on contract basis) as a Senior Lecturer, teaching Anthropology courses and conducting research in that discipline, in the Department of Sociology. That means that, all-in-all, Dr. Tom Miachi has been privileged to have associated with the good people of his beloved Kogi State for over 69% out of his 62.5 years on Planet Earth. It can therefore be said without mincing words, that Dr. Miachi knows the people of Kogi State and their problems, needs and yearnings very well. In recognition of his selfless services to the nation and towards the promotion of Igala people, culture and history, through writing and research, advocacy and public enlightenment, Dr. Tom Ajayi Miachi has been chosen to be conferred with the ARISE IGALA LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD, 2015.

A member of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) etc.
Raised in a proper family setting, his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Abu Michael Yahaya of Anyigba/Ajiolo in Dekina Local Government Area in Kogi State, instill in the young Moses the required discipline, etiquette and self-esteem which has all combined to shape the life of this uncommon man, Dr. Abu Moses Alidu. Dr. Abu Moses Alidu is a professional in the telecomm industry, an expert in Human Resource, Oil & Gas and other businesses. He started his formal education at Army Children School, Abakpa in 1976 and later gained admission into Christ High School, Abor and completed his Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) at CMML Secondary School, Anyigba-Kogi State in 1990/GCE, excelling with top grades in both art and science. He subsequently moved higher in academic ladder, bagging a degree in Public Administration from the Enugu State University of Science & Technology (ESUT) in 1996. Today, the knowledge thirsty Abu Moses holds a Master Degree in Business Administration (MBA) and Doctorate in Business and Entrepreneurship Development all from the European American University, common wealth Domenica. A close look at Dr. Abu Moses persona will reveal his multilateral parts. He is extremely gifted, intellectually engaging, purposeful, selfmotivated and a compulsive visionary leader that is affecting many lives in his generation. There is no doubt that this great man is leading a quiet revolution for national renewal and development. Essentially, this is the power of perceptive thinking, courage and sound judgment, sending necessary signals to the larger society, corporate entities and policy makers in government about the resilience and triumph of an outstanding indigenous entrepreneur. Dr. Abu Moses Alidu started his career at Ericsson Nigeria Limited where he had extensive training both locally and internationally and distinguished himself. In spite of the turbulent economic environment in the nation, his rare acumen, credibility and strategic skills has helped his businesses to navigate so successfully, notching up credits and recognition for motivation and superlative enterprise. Dr. Abu Moses Alidu is the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Mabseed Services Limited, Netclean Services Limited, Filtek Global Ventures Limited and Borderless Intelligent Limited. These are high net worth brands in telecommunications in contemporary Nigeria, shaping the dynamics of the sector for good. The highly respected business mogul is a member of Nigeria/Danish Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture and the Chartered Institute of Administration. His distinction as an exceptional entrepreneur in the telecomm, human resources, government and international business and oil sector is an eloquent testimony to such landmark achievements and recognition like the “Achiever of the Ericsson Highest Target Microwave Installation, 2012”. Considering the vastness of his investment portfolio in the nation today, Dr. Abu Moses Alidu may be seen as a super capitalist, but he is one with a difference. Like George Soros, some degree of morality still matters even in business, just as some worthy causes that border on the lives of the people are worth addressing with personal resources. His now familiar value system resonate around a philosophy that we must have a sense of community, translated to mean that we cannot be individual beneficiaries on to ourselves but that we are required to add value to our community because we have obligations to the people and that this is the best way to live. A related philosophy of life as this Igala golden fish is described is that regardless of your family or academic background, you will make it in life if you are determined. In all of this, Elder Bernard and his beloved wife, Deaconess Rebecca ADOJI had enough time to instil in their offspring the fear of God, discipline and those morals that make a whole man. he recent forms of the Kogi United and Confluence Queens Football Clubs (FCs) caught the attention of ARISE IGALA MAGAZINE. So, the magazine was moved to talk with the football clubs’ Technical Director, Abdul Sule. His responses were revealing and encouraging as well as both FCs are expected to be flying higher and higher if the same focus is maintained combine with more supports from
Arise Igala-Issue 23
stakeholders. What is the current state of the clubs in the various leagues they play? Kogi United are expected to be 4th on the log after Week Three matches of the NNL. Confluence Queens are also 4th after three games played in the NWPL. Does the current status indicate progress from where they were 2, 3 seasons ago?
Yes, their status have changed positively. For Kogi United, they have always struggled for survival in the NNL, but have since being a strong contender for promotion to the Premier League. Confluence Queens have also improved tremendously and their current position couple with the way they play has improved. In view of the progress being 43
SPORTS made, what factors would you say are responsible for the clubs current status? One major factor is the support and encouragement from the present administration under Gov. Idris Ichalla Wada. Improved salary for both clubs paid as at when due, better welfare packages, good and technically sound coaches and good players as well as active and vibrant management officials. These factors mentioned, what’s your advice on how to sustain them in order to get more and more positive results that will ensure the success of the clubs’ campaigns? In as much that we are getting these supports
SPORTS from government, we will also find a way for private sponsors and adverts. The teams are engaged in foreign collaboration and we will also sell some players abroad when the time is ripe. The present management of the clubs seems passionate about their successes, how practical has it gone to translate its passion to reality? The present management is made of group of persons with experience in the game, we are up to the task in what we do, you could see that on the popularity and success gained by both clubs within the shortest distance and we are ready to do more to achieve greatness.the clubs are currently sponsor by hummel, a Danish and European brand. They gave
the teams kits worth more millions of naira and kogi United fc and confluence Queens fc are one of the best team in terms of original branded kits.the both teams have a camp for the players and well furnished. Going by the progress being recorded so far, if it continues on a positive note, where do you see the clubs in the next 3 seasons to come? Wow! Good question. We are optimistic that if we get these support and encouragement from financier of the club (that’s the government) I’m very optimistic for the next two to three years, Kogi United will not only play in the apex league in Nigeria, they will be representing the country in the Continental
The coaching crew addressing Kogi Unted players competitions, same goes for Confluence Queens and more so, that will make our players gain call ups to the national teams. Capt. Wada’s government has change football in kogi state. We are full professional. Are you getting the right encouragement from your fans, supporters and investors? For investors, it’s the government, we are ok with it, no complain, but we will be happy if it’s better than this. Our supporters and fans have been wonderful, we always appreciate them and always want them around us, from our part, we will make sure to always make them happy

Kogi United in for the excercise session where we interact with the world. They are doing fine and we will continue give them the best of support and encouragement to do more. How supportive has the Governor Wada’s administration been to the clubs in the face of the current financial crises rocking the nation? You are not unaware of current situation of money for all state governments, Kogi state is not left out, but like said before, the Government of Governor Idris Wada has been very supportive, we understand what’s going on and we are not complaining as we are getting what is needed to keep the team running and when things get back to normal, we will get more. The teams allowance and other financial assistance are been paid. 46

The Confluence Queens What should Kogites/fans expect from you and what do you also expect from them? We expect all sons and daughters of Kogi State, home and abroad to believe in us as we going to make them proud in all our games and competition. We also want them to join the government with their supports, it should not be only government, the well to do among can join in encouraging both clubs, we want them to be at the stadium in numbers cheering
us on in all home games, the stadium should be full to the brim with them on our side and we also want their prayers in all our games, by God’s grace we will be at the top. We have just imported 2000 sets of hummel brand jerseys from Denmark for team fans to buy, just like other European clubs are doing. Those jerseys for the teams came through me because am hummel ambassador in Nigeria. Arise Igala-Issue 23
