PALAIS BEAUX ARTS MUSEUM EXTENSION PROFESSOR MICHAEL HALFLANTS DESIGN A_SPRING 2017
Palais des Beaux- arts extension is an addition to the existing museum, It challenged way of entry, connection to the old and views since the government was giving permission to exceed height limits. Because of its location, The addition needed to receive public from the Royal palace of Brussels. My proposal was to respectfully connect the new addition 41’ deep down behind the concert hall for artist to be able to be close to their stage. Visitors can also share this entrance and continue to other exhibitions in the existing building. The program of the addition consist of reception space, 3 meetings spaces for groups, elevator access to all levels, museum cafeteria with view, a museum shop, lecture hall / concert hall , dressing rooms for artist, storage for concert hall, and a high end restaurant with view.
SITE PLAN 2
Above street level in the second floor the visitor is met with a concert hall. The concert hall has a backdrop to the Royal palace. The exit of the concert hall meets with meeting space, where visitors can gather before a musical or it can also used for any type of meeting. The third level provides main exhibition space but this time with a view to the historic city of Brussels.

UNDERGROUND PROGRAM The underground program consist of connecting the new addition to the Palais des Beaux at the bottom floor. It consist of storage for the concert hall, and a cafe. The level above contains an entire floor of dressing rooms for artist provided with waiting areas. Above, an entire floor of exhibition space as well as a gift shop. The level above meets the street, it provides a reception space below the concert hall. The cantilevering concert hall breaks the monotone building of the street edge and invites people to come in, As you enter from the Royal palace street level you are encountered with stairways. one descends to connect to the Palais, the other one takes the visitor to the above program.

In the street level there is a gap and a little plaza cover by a part cantilevering from the concert hall to invite visitor to enter. The exit of the concert hall meets with meeting space, where visitors can gather before a musical or it can also used for any type of meeting. In The third level provides another exhibition space with a panorama view of Brussels. The project transparency from west and east is to invite people to the activities happening at museum extension. The delicates structure and louvers generates a delicate transition from the old and the new.

On the west end of the island are 3 small peninsulas, all buildings along Winjkade have burned down. The peninsula needed to be redesigned. In this housing project we were challenge to develop a Residential community. In this small peninsula in Rotterdam, The Cu Residences were developed. A complex with shared circulation and various floor plans modules to choose from.

THE TAMPA MARINA MART PROFESSOR DANIEL POWERS DESIGN B_FALL 2017 Located in downtown Tampa major port, The Tampa Marina Mart includes the design of a large, open, multi-story space for the display and scale of boats of various types, retail space (indoor mall) for marine related recreational items ( racing fishing, skiing, scuba diving, clothing, etc) and a 12-15 story, office tower for marine related office tower for marine related professionals and businesses with a 5-satr roof top restaurant.
21
22
The building design began with the concept of flow and connectivity. The design approach then was the merging of different elements into a unifying piece trying to achieve the activation of the water front as a public and recreational place, and a most visit destination. Converting an industrial port into the new location for a major boat display. The design scheme for this project pushes for grand space where boat are exhibit. As well retail and office tower. The main design goals for the retail center and office tower were to follow a dynamic fluidity and modern articulation of common and grand space as also work spaces. Each space was designed to accommodate large retail shops programmed specifically to the water activities on site and related to boats. This way, shoppers could stop by the retail for major items. The office tower has dedicated double height space that inside would create a larger shared space for companies occupying the building. And last a 5-star restaurant in the 15 floor of the tower with a open floor plan that allows a 360 degree view to the city.

24
Context. The project frames main access and opening to cars driving by creating grand openings from street level as pedestrian enter the site from channel-side or the parking garage located just south of the site. The walkways allow people to see the boat from higher point of view as well as various view of the hanging boats on display. They also lead people out to view the water and walk along the outside of the building.

ANA MARIA ISLAND
ST ARMAND’S RESIDENCE
PROFESSOR MICHAEL HALFLANTS GRADUATE ELECTIVE_SUMMER 2016 This project began by an introduction to several lectures about Tropical Architecture covering topics of climate, passive cooling strategies, sun path, Releasing of hot air, etc. For the Tropical Architecture course, a tight site is selected on a barrier island on Florida’s Gulf Coast. The project face the challenge of creating an open and porous design out of a compact and dense programmatic envelope. The environmental control systems, both passive and active, become the architectural expression of the house. While the residence will be conditioned, the occupants should fully benefit from the pleasures of the Florida’s subtropical weather. Sound passive cooling design strategies are to guide their design. Every effort should be taken to engage the senses and encourage the use of the outdoors.

The floor plans show the continuous space on the first floor. The wind should enter through the southwest corner and travel out through the wall that corner the pool. Te sound passive cooling strategy was to have the north and south sides with wind acces for cross ventilation. There is a partial indoor garden where it will receive partial sun for a a partial indor garden.
40
The final design for the house celebrates the use of outdoor spaces through the area where wind will enter most often. The shell of the house allows for plenty of open gathering spaces while also protecting from wind and rain. The roof has two apertures in the main space to allow natural light to filter in circuation paths of the house permiting to have a private but natural iluminted areas during the day.

CENTRO HAVANA
A DESIGN FOR A NEIGHBORHOOD IN HAVANA, CUBA PROFESSOR JAN WAMPLER DESIGN C_SPRING 2016
The Cuban people of Centro Havana are living among ruins and disadvantage. Every day, a building, someone’s home, crumbles from the years of weathering and neglect. Walking through the streets alone, one would think that life was not possible in this place. And yet as the day begins the people of Centro open their doors and step out onto their porches and balconies to greet the morning with smiles of hope and appreciation. The people flood the streets with commerce and play. There is life in this place. There is life in these homes, life on the streets, life on the rooftops, and life in the people. For the struggles of Centro, the inhabitants have innovated their own system of sustainability on all levels for the purpose of survival. Our intention for the community is to expand on the opportunity and necessity for self-sustainment and give Centro the resources and ease of continuing on in this light. Simultaneously we aim to maintain and encourage the street life of this place. A tie to the water is essential to the climate. With cultural, educational, and housing additions to the site we hope to further accommodate the inhabitants of Centro with the end result of a sustainable community that preserves the locals way of life in a time of rapid change.

Just like roots diverging deep into the earth, our community design springs deep into the outskirts of the neighborhood. Our design offers the community a main gathering green space, right at the heart of the neighborhood. This green space is surrounded by educational and civic buildings. From the center of the neighborhood, we then created a series of green spaces that guide people to the outskirts of the neighborhood. We believe that this way, every part of the neighborhood is touched by something new and refreshing. Whether this is a recreational green spaces or a community garden, these green space educate and give community members of fresh air in this congested part of Havana.

WHAT
The “Junk Model “. In this model, we could find and release all ideas that our group had. Our ideas base on creating a center in the heart of the community. The idea was to create a center with nature to give a space outdoors to local residents and from that point rides that connect to most important places in our community.

PROGRAMMATIC IDEAS

49
1-100th MODEL The second iteration of the master plan in three-dimensional form was designed to elaborate on the initial massing of the intervention and to highlight the space between the buildings as being equally relevant. Here the interaction between the reen space and the built architecture is beginning to be articulated, as such the hierarchy of the space between diagram is the central axis of the arge green space in the center of our community.
50
1-32th LA ARBOLEDA Zooming into the scale of the architectural style and detail of Centro Habana, a block within the intervention was designed in order to explain the interaction of the new architecture to the old, as well as both factors interacting with the green spaces. Ideas of solar shading, breezeways and terraces for the residential, and multi-level open areas and pavilions were factors of the new architectural design, as well as adhering to the current scale and variety of Centro.

1-16th LA ARBOLEDA Zooming into the scale of the architectural style and detail of Centro Habana, a block within the intervention was designed in order to explain the interaction of the new architecture to the old, as well as both factors interacting with the Inner gardens. Ideas of solar shading, facade preservation, breezeways and terraces for the residential, and multi-level parks and pavilions were factors of the new architectural design, as well as adhering to the current scale and variety of Centro.
53
54
FINAL MODEL In the final iteration of the site and intervention, a fully realized inhabitable design is created above and around the central park to create a further enhanced street life for the people of Centro Habana. The scale of detail is implied to create subtle differences between the civic buildings and the residences. Furthermore, a series of 25%, 50%, and 75% replaced blocks were incorporated in order to increased the density of housing within the site and further accommodate the locals currently living there that are lacking the means of proportionate space.

Located In the heart of downtown Boston, Massachusetts. Occupying a new urban edge takes place. Close to major work and tourist downtown areas such as the Financial District, Downtown Crossing, and the New England Aquarium, the Mix use development provides a new city destination. The new spaces provide beautiful views of the waterfront as well as city life. The dynamic design presents a new form of connectivity, it lifts itself from the ground to provide a transparency from the street edge to the waterfront. It respects and acknowledges the pedestrians and visitors of Boston. Emerging from the floating link three towers are present; each with different program but all part of one single entity.
