"कायं शरीरं उृजत ममादपरणामेन जतीत कायोग तपो भवेत् " (कातकेयानुेा टीका 468) It means giving up attachment to your body. Living with this kind of tyag (abdication) is KAYOTSARGA. In other words, it literally means "dismissing the body". Kayotsarga means "to give up one's physical comfort and body movements", thus staying steady, either in a standing or sitting posture, and concentrating upon the true nature of the soul. Kayotsarga = Kaya (body) + Utsarga (to give up) It is a yogic posture which is an important part of the Jain meditation. It is one of the six essentials (avasyaka) of a Jain ascetic and one of the 28 primary attributes of a Digambara monk. Jain Tirthankara is represented either seated in Padmasana or standing in the kayotsarga posture. An example of unflinching standing meditation is that of Bhagwan Bahubali who is said to have stood in kayotsarga for a year. On the physical level Kayotsarga is the safest and
the most ancient technique of psychotherapy known to mankind. People of every culture and belief have used it to heal the sick. PROCESSOFKAYOTSARGA Ÿ It can be done in standing or sitting posture. Ÿ One inhalation and one exhalation is counted as one breath. Ÿ 27 breaths are counted as one Kayotsarga. Ÿ Be aware of your each breath. During the process of Kayotsarga, one is neither in the past nor in the future. Awareness is in the present and hence, it detaches one from attachments and desires and prepares one for the next phase of meditation. BENEFITS/LIFEIMPLEMENTATIONOFKAYOTSARGA Kayotsarga is total relaxation with self awareness. The existence of mental stress as a part of morden living has been universally accepted. Repeated stressful situations not only affect our psychological status
negatively but also undermine our physical health. Tension and anxiety generated by life's daily hassle and overactivity can be taken care of by conscious relaxation and deliberate suspension of all bodily movements. While performing ECGthe doctor instruct the patient to relax, even the dentist while extracting a tooth instructs the patient to loosen his jaw, a body massager and a beautician while performing massage instructs the person to relax the body and the facial muscles. This means that there is a direct relationship between pain and tension
Kayotsarga is very helpful in releasing tension.
