This project focuses on the issue of unsustainable and fast construction in China which primarily uses concrete as a quick and cheap building material that in the long-term is entirely unbeneficial for the environment. The BiblioTECH is a factory of both knowledge and sustainable building materials. A cycling system uses a library to inform visitors and participants of current building conditions and helps develop new ideas for more sustainable solutions to the current situation. Beneath the library lies a PET bottle recycling system and a glulam bamboo processing center that uses renewabe and recycled resources to create workable materials that could be created to preform various functions. In between the library and processing center, a FabLab uses these materials to experiment with new building techniques or new usable products. This cycle not only provides resources for visitors to use in their everyday lives but also provides for the building itself with furniture and other components made from the materials used in the processing areas.

This project utilizes Semper’s theory of an independent and separate interior and exterior. Whitewash drives the exterior to disguise itself within the surrounding grassy landscape while the form embeds itself into the ground while creating new ideas of wallpaper designs in the interior. As the primitive form’s outer shell reflects the rugged texture of the ground, the carved poche of the interior form follows Semper’s use of layering form by remaining completely separate from the exterior. Each villa unit contains an upper patio area with seating, a curved stairway leading down to the villa level garden, and a shallow pool which reflects off of the surrounding stone walls.The forms of these elements follow the pattern of overlapping rings spread across the site to create three unit geometries.

Le Fresnoy, by Bernard Tschumi, is a media education center that incorporates existing buildings with a new metal roof and ramp structure above. Tschumi designed the new components to act as an umbrella over the existing structures to serve for weather protection and an interstitial circulation space. By breaking down various components of Le Fresnoy Art Center in Tourcoing, France, a holistic understanding of the relationship between the new and old can be revealed. The media center was reduced to structure, systems, program, massing and facade. Axonometric representations of these parts show the different strategies to design the new around, in-between, or above the old.

The Roma Interrotta project was used as a base for this study. Each group received a portion of the Interrotta project to analysis and re-interpret on an antique map of Florence. This analysis focused on the eastern portion of the Roma Interrotta map done by Romaldo Giurgola. He creates a utopian society that connects the farm lands to the east to the city. The existing wall is re-used as a mechanism that carries a series of long cranes that pick up the crops and swing to levitate above the city while placing the goods at required locations.

For the analysis of this design, we decided to intervene on a small northern section of the Florence map and also reuse the existing wall but as a factory conveyor belt system that would create products for the city. Between the city and the wall, a utopian village is placed as a buffer to house the workers of the factories and other visitors passing by. The main gate to the northeast is used as a museum that explains the factory system while spiraling visitors up to the vertically extruded street that is connected to the Duomo. While maintaining almost all of the existing city layout, this intervention provides a new source of income and jobs to impact the rising unemployment rate in Florence.

The watch gates are used as factories that process the materials through a certain step and then carry the material through the walled conveyor belt to the next step.

The hierarchal path from the museum to the Duomo is created by extruding the existing main street in the city to the top of the museum. This path will be used by tourists who want to focus on viewing the existing city of Florence.

Three Reminders

The process of “Three Reminders� is a series of steps consisting of Plan, Surface and Volume to appreciate the basic design methods that may be overlooked in today’s high-speed design world. The first step, Plan, involves merging classic palazzo plans together and using the produced outline to create the final form. The second step, Surface, applies texture and material to the surfaces of the generated form to create hierarchy and pattern among the overall form. Lastly, Volume brings in a new element separate from the original design that incorporates itself into the design tectonically or stereotomically.

This process produced several unique designs that took on the palazzo and exhibition program that would hint back towards traditional Italian Renaissance design but abstract it as well.

This project analyses the function of a storage space and the storage inside to expand on different ways storage can interact with people instead of being hidden away inside forever. Three types of storage spaces were created from researching documentaries about hoarding and the use of storage rooms.

Banal storage spaces would serve as hidden storage in the center of the building. Functional storage rooms would allow people to use the space for a business or class and allow for people to view the activity through semi-translucent panels. Storage consisting of collections or prized objects would be either placed in translucent storage spaces on the outer spaces of the building or be displayed in the open space amongst the public. People would be able to bid and purchase stored objects for sale that is displayed and also view collections as a sort of exhibit as well.

Advertisements are incorporated into space using several common techniques. They may cover an entire building facade or be placed high above a structure. They all range in sizes from smaller banners hung off of streets lights to large store signs. While advertisements and store signs serve as high sources of revenue from tourists or natives of LA, they also highlight the activities occurring around the visitors.

People are able to read the billboards or banners and become drawn to the location that the activity takes place in. This design incorporates these ideas of advertisement by allowing the skin and the interior of the building to outwardly or inwardly “advertise� itself to the public. For example, the lower level uses high advertising on the exterior and low advertising on the interior with the horizontally undulating surfaces facing every direction to draw visitors in. Every level uses a different formal method of advertising from undulating surfaces to levels of transparency.

Through the de-construction of the building precedent, House in Balsthal, a developing understanding of the entire building system is gained. This includes the building’s structure, plumbing and electric system, construction details and materials. Both Revit and Rhino were used to re-create the systems within the house and to represent detailed sectional and planar drawings. The final drawings contain a holistic view of the numerous parts that make up the single house to express the finite details and pieces that are involved in creating a minimalistic and unified design.

This 24 hour workshop was an introduction to lead the studio into the landscape-focused design challenge. The image produced re-imagines a flat, gridded landscape that suddenly opens up into a gaping hole filled with ramps and hideout divets. The grid is pulled down from 2D to 3D which generates the cubed surfaces of the hole’s sides.The use of color differenciates the flat surface of above to the new world below it. A person was to experience this space by gradually moving deeper into the hole until reaching the bottom where they can look up and see how the world within the hole has completely changed from below to above.
