Sam Francis ”I paint time“
Avec Sam Francis « I paint time. », la galerie A&R Fleury rend hommage à l’une des grandes figures de l’abstraction américaine d’après-guerre. Réalisée en collaboration avec la Sam Francis Foundation et avec le soutien de la Galerie Delaive, l’exposition invite le spectateur à regarder la peinture de Sam Francis comme une expérience du temps. La couleur est déposée et se diffuse, la lumière la traverse et les blancs du support semble suspendre le temps. Ce projet est l’occasion de présenter la nouvelle publication de la Sam Francis Foundation, Sam Francis and Yves Michaud in Dialogue: Painting, Poetry, and Philosophy, un ouvrage bilingue publié par DoPe Press et remarquablement dirigé par Susan L. Power. Dans ce rapprochement, il nous a semblé que ces pages et ces cimaises se répondaient. Chez Sam Francis, la peinture ne se fige jamais. Elle coule, s’étend, se pose, et chaque œuvre garde la mémoire du geste et de l’instant qui l’ont fait naître. C’est ce temps-là que nous avons voulu rendre sensible à travers une sélection d’œuvres. Ce projet est aussi une forme de retour car c’est à Paris, au début des années 1950, que Sam Francis a trouvé sa voie. Nous avons conçu l’accrochage comme une invitation à ralentir. Il suffit de prendre le temps d’imprégner les couleurs et d’absorber l’énergie des œuvres. Et pour ceux qui souhaitent prolonger la rencontre, les passages tirés du livre offrent une nouvelle lecture au spectateur.

With Sam Francis «I paint time», Galerie A&R Fleury honors one of the great figures of post-war American abstraction. In collabpration with the Sam Francis Foundation and the support of Delaive Gallery, this exhibition invites the viewer to look at Sam Francis’ painting as an experience of Time. Colour is applied and spreads out, light passes through it and the white areas of the ground seem to suspend time. This project is the occasion to present the new publication by the Sam Francis Foundation, Sam Francis and Yves Michaud in Dialogue: Painting, Poetry, and Philosophy, a bilingual book published by Dope Press and remarkably edited by Susan L. Power. In drawing this parallel, it struck us that these pages and these paintings seemed to echo one another. In Sam Francis’s work, the paint never sets. It flows, spreads and settles, and each piece retains the memory of the gesture and the moment that gave it life. It is this very moment that we have sought to bring to life through a selection of works. This project also marks a return of sorts, as it was in Paris, in the early 1950s, that Sam Francis found his calling. We have conceived the scenography as an invitation to slow down. All that is needed is a little time to take in the colours and absorbe the energy of the artworks. And for those who wish to prolong the experience, the extracts from the book offer the viewer a fresh perspective.
