Term Length Draw The Senate draws for length of terms after each re-districting. Approximately half of the Senators draw a two year term and the other half a four year term. This draw allows the Senate to have a staggered election cycle rather than the entire Senate stand for re-election at the same time. State term limit law states that Senators may serve two four year terms. While a draw of a two year term means that the legislator has to stand for re-election in two years, the short term does not count against their term limit count.
