Classroom Materials
Several different classroom materials are available for teachers to use in the classroom. The Ag Reader series features commodity specific information and activities on the major crops produced in Arkansas, and they are correlated to the state standards. Other classroom materials are available, including coloring books, an agriculture production map, books and bookmarks.
Educational Displays
The Ag in the Classroom program has mobile educational displays available for school programs across the state. Arkansas Farm Bureau staff members conduct educational programs using the displays and the interactive features to teach students about agriculture in Arkansas. Presentations can be made for classrooms, an entire grade or the whole school. The Ag in the Classroom program also offers garden grants for schools, hands on activities and awards for teachers. M*A*S*HCAMPS M*A*S*H (Medical Applications of Science for Health) is a program designed for students interested in a medical field career. The two-week camps are free and take place around the state. The camps give students a unique glimpse of the health-care industry by allowing them to shadow medical professionals. Participants do lab work, learn how to suture wounds, make casts, watch surgery and learn about dentistry, sports medicine, pathology and so much more. The application period runs from February-April, though specific deadlines differ for each site. Applications may be obtained through your guidance counselor. This anti-crime program offers a $ 2,500 reward for information leading to the conviction of people who commit crimes on members’ property. AGSCHOLARSHIPS Because Farm Bureau cares about the future of our farming communities and our youth, we sponsor or co-sponsor several wonderful Arkansas college scholarships for college-bound students. To obtain additional information about these excellent ag scholarships, please contact your county Farm Bureau office. Arkansas Farm Bureau Scholarship Foundation
The Arkansas Farm Bureau Foundation Scholarship was established in 2002 to provide financial assistance to children or grandchildren of Farm Bureau members who are pursuing studies in agriculture at an accredited Arkansas university. The foundation provides 12 $3,000 scholarships per year. • Open to college juniors and seniors who are currently enrolled in an Arkansas accredited college or university. • Must be an Arkansas resident. • Must be actively pursuing an ag-related degree • Scholarship based upon academic achievement, character, career plans, financial need and leadership potential. Must be currently enrolled in a minimum of 12 hours per semester and maintain a 2.5 GPA • Twelve scholarships are paid in installments of $1,500 per semester for fall and spring semesters. Checks will be issued directly to the University. • Documentation must be provided in order to receive the spring semester check.
Arkansas Farm Bureau – Romeo E. Short Foundation Scholarship
In 1955, the Arkansas Farm Bureau Federation established the Romeo E. Short Scholarship Foundation to fund ag scholarships within the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences. The scholarship is awarded by the Bumpers College, according to the guidelines provided by the Farm Bureau Romeo E. Short Memorial Foundation. Each year 10 students receive Arkansas college scholarships in the amount of $2,000. Since its inception in 1955, hundreds of students have benefited from the foresight and generosity of this foundation. • $2,000 scholarship awarded to University of Arkansas students enrolled in the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences; • Recipients must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA; • Recipients must be enrolled in 15 or more hours per semester. • To be considered for this award, students must complete the online Bumpers College Scholarship application by Feb. 1 of each academic year: http://bumpers-college.uark.edu/academics/scholarships-and-financial-aid/ index.php. Arkansas Farm Bureau Marvin Vines Scholarship
An annual award is given in honor of the late Arkansas farm broadcaster Marvin Vines to a student majoring in Radio-TV at ASU. Vines, farm broadcaster with radio station KAAY in Little Rock was well known throughout the state and elsewhere because of the 50,000 watts of power that enabled his farm reports to be heard in many areas outside the state. Vines traveled extensively throughout Arkansas to report on agriculture events and issues. He was always interested in and supportive of the rural youth of the state especially FFA and 4-H members and their activities. Endowed by the Arkansas Farm Bureau, the award is given each spring to a Radio-TV major who will be a senior the following fall semester.
