I

saw the above quote, and it seemed fitting given some of the exciting things I’ve been involved with recently.

I was asked by Arkansas Farm Bureau to attend the American Farm Bureau advocacy conference recently in Washington. It was amazing, and I learned advanced skills to help me advocate on behalf of agriculture.

I’ve participated in many social media “tell your story” style workshops in the last few years. If you’re in agriculture, you know all about the telling your story mantra. I can quote almost any workshop leader. “You need to tell your story. Only you can tell it. If you want your story told correctly, you have to tell it yourself.”

It’s all good advice. It’s exactly what farmers and ranchers should be doing. We have a great story to tell.

I left all those workshops fired up. Then I got home to the cows, my family and my friends, and they’ve already heard my story. And they don’t want to hear it again. So then I’m left wondering, to whom and where do I tell my story?

And you’re stuck.

Then someone on your Facebook or Twitter or in town says something that just blows your agricultural mind. It might even be a friend. You wonder how and why they don’t know your story. They don’t know the science. And they don’t know the facts.

When we feel like we haven’t done a good job of telling our story and we get blindsided like that, the initial reaction is defensive. We immediately want to tackle whoever has the ball. Run them down and take them out. Here’s the thing, this isn’t football.

We can’t tell our story or make our point by being defensive. To effectively communicate with

consumers, friends, family members, whoever, we have to learn to step back and take a breath before responding.

Use the brains God gave us to tell our stories.

It’s not about constantly spouting facts, talking points or regurgitating information we’ve been given. Those are useful and good tools. And they are truths. But they’re as sterile as an operating room. They’re cold. People don’t want the operating room. They want the warm and fuzzy miracle story with people in it. They want to grasp your story and feel it. Tears, goose bumps, fear, happiness, accomplishment . . . love. All those things come across when you live your story. Use the facts.

Follow the talking points. But make them feel it.

Nobody wants to hear your livestock has a 1 percent mortality rate or you grew 171.7 bushels of corn per acre. You don’t get attention with those facts unless you’re talking to another ag person. The continued on page 5

average person doesn’t immediately know what a mortality rate is on a farm. The closest thing to a bushel anyone gets is “a bushel, a peck and a hug around the neck” from Aunt Helen.

The average person wants to hear about the January night when your daughter’s show heifer was calving during a snowstorm. The momma cow wouldn’t get up or push, so you had to pull the calf.

And it was so cold you had to get momma up and take that calf into the house and dry her off and wrap her in a blanket next to the fireplace. And you stayed up making sure they both recovered and made it through the night. They want to see pictures of your 3-year-old daughter bottle feeding the calf.

They want to hear the story about how last year wasn’t very productive. But you knew that between faith and family you could overcome the hardships, because you have each other. That you all worked together to plant and harvest and ended up with record crops this year.

They want my story. Because if they can put my face with that gallon of milk on the table or sweet corn on their plate, they’re able to second guess what they might see on the nightly news. We have to face the fact that people and organizations out there don’t want farmers and ranchers to succeed. They’re strategically placing their edited and cherry picked propaganda in front of consumers.

And it works.

It works because we’re not yet adept at telling our story. We’re good at jumping on the defense. We can argue facts and science. We can keep consumers at arm’s length. But we keep the emotion and heart to ourselves, because we’re afraid someone might twist our words. So we say nothing, and we lose that round.

I’m guilty. Guilty of keeping my story to myself.

Guilty of being the best linebacker ever. Put me in coach, I can be defensive. And after two days of drilling advocacy into my head and seeing this quote, I realize we have to tell our stories — to everyone.

If we’re telling our story — something we’re living every day and have expertise, something we’re passionate about . . . something we own — we won’t be defensive. We’ll be personable. We’ll be effective. We’ll be heard and understood. This story, my story, your story, is relevant.

Farmers are proud of what they do. We have a lot to be proud of. We provide (at least) one of the basic needs of human beings. We shouldn’t be hiding. Come out, come out wherever you are!

I’m learning to tell my story and to step back when I feel the anger and frustrations rising in me. I take a deep breath and try to find some way to relate my story to the issue. And if I don’t have a personal story, I find someone who does, and I use facts and science. I try — and it isn’t easy — to keep my frustration in check and keep it out of my conversation.

There are many days I feel like a failure. Sometimes it slaps me in the face that my people, the ones I spend time with, don’t know the truth or the facts. Go ahead.

Poll your friends. Ask them about organic, GMO, egg production, dairy products and practices. See if you’re telling agriculture’s story effectively. Practice telling your story with those close to you. Tell me your story. Tell snippets of your story on Facebook, Twitter, on a Pinterest board, with pictures and quotes. Whatever method you use, tell your story and tell it well.

I share my story with y’all when I write a post. I share on my Facebook and other social media outlets. I tell my story to friends and strangers. But my voice is only one. It’s (mostly) quiet. But if we tell agriculture’s story in unison, consumers can’t help but hear it. They can’t drown it out.

Let’s stop letting it get the best of us. Stop defending and start telling honest, emotional truths.

Let’s do the teaching rather than be the person shutting down the conversation.

he Arkansas Agriculture Hall of Fame recently inducted five individuals whose leadership and service have brought distinction to the state’s largest economic contributor segment.

The newest class includes James R. (Jim) Baker of Conway, James Bibler of Russellville, the late Billie R. Nix of Ash Flat, the late Bruce Oakley of El Paso and John Ed Regenold of Blytheville.

“To consider the accomplishments of these gentlemen who have been selected to the Arkansas Agriculture Hall of Fame is to see the outcome of hard work, foresight and ingenuity,” said Butch Calhoun of Des Arc, chairman of the Arkansas Agriculture Hall of Fame and former Arkansas Secretary of Agriculture.

“The impact they made on their communities, on agriculture in our state, and the lives of so many of those associated with their successes is incalculable.

They are each deserving of this recognition, which reflects well on agriculture. They all stand for the positive benefits agriculture provides to this state.”

James R. (Jim) Baker, Conway A fifth-generation cattleman, Jim Baker has spent his adult life advancing the state’s cattle industry. From 1983-1995 he served on the Arkansas Livestock and Poultry Commission when the reproductive disease brucellosis was threatening the industry. He represented the state auction markets for 11 years and was a part of the effort to eradicate the disease and move Arkansas to brucellosis-free status.

Jim Baker was elected Faulkner County Judge in 2014 and this is the sixth career he has pursued.

Raised in Pike County, Baker joined 4-H as a boy and has been a member for more than 60 years.

He credits 4-H for getting him to be involved in programs that “motivated me to go to college and prepared me for life.”

From 1988-1995 Baker was a member of the Arkansas Farm Bureau board of directors, and was also active with the Arkansas Cattlemen’s Association. He became good friends with Tommy Lewis, owner of Lewis Livestock Auction in Conway, and was general manager of the auction from 1983-1994. During this time, Baker helped it become the second largest auction in the southeast serving 450-500 sellers per week. Prior to that he worked for the Central Arkansas Production Credit Association and serviced the needs of 700 farm and ranch customers in Faulkner and Van Buren counties out of his Conway office.

But that changed in 1994 when President Bill Clinton appointed Baker to become the first administrator of the Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a post Baker held for 6½ years. He oversaw 840 employees and had a “front-row seat” on Capitol Hill while managing an agency that set grain standards and regulated livestock and poultry marketing in the U.S. Baker calls the Ag Hall of Fame, the “Heisman Trophy” of agriculture. “I’ve probably had a working relationship with at least 40 percent of those who have been inducted during my lifetime,” he recalled. “Many of the men I consider giants in our industry, like Orval Childs, Ned Ray Purtle, Marvin Vines, I had the opportunity to work with. Joining them in the Arkansas Agriculture Hall of Fame is very humbling.”

James Bibler, Russellville Under the leadership of James Bibler, Bibler Brothers Lumber Company grew to be one of the most progressive and successful operations of its kind in the United States. The family business was established in 1909 when James’ grandfather built a sawmill in Pope County. He died in 1933 and left the company to his sons, including James’ father Odus Bibler. They moved the mill to Russellville in 1961. Bibler left college at Arkansas Tech to begin working at the mill in 1955 and in 1967, at the age of 33, was named president, a position he held until 1998.

One time, a fire destroyed the mill and Bibler was approached about what they should do. “They (his father and uncles) asked if we should shut it down or build it back,” Bibler recalls. “I said I wanted to build it back, but not the way it was. I wanted to install the most modern equipment on the market. Every time something new came along we would incorporate it into the operation. That was my philosophy throughout my career.”

Bibler saw to it that state-of-the-art equipment was installed that allowed the mill to significantly increase its production capacity and efficiency. “We’d have a log come in on Monday, go back out on Friday as a finished product and it would never be touched by human hands,” he said.

Bibler Brothers became the standard for the lumber industry in Arkansas and beyond. “When machinery salesmen would go to our competitors to try to sell them a new piece of equipment they’d ask, ‘What’s Bibler doing?’ I wanted to be at the forefront of the latest technology and get the most out of each log so as to reduce any waste.”

Highlights of his more than 60-year-career included being appointed to the Arkansas Forestry Commission in 1978 and serving as chairman from 1984-2002 when he retired. He also served as president and chairman of the board of the Southern Forest Products Association from 1983-1984 and was a member of the Board of Governors of the National Forest Products Association from 1984-1985.

Billie R. Nix, Ash Flat

The late Billie R. Nix bought the Ash Flat Livestock Auction in 1960 and until his death in 2010, worked tirelessly to improve the cattle industry in Arkansas. Nix was owner and president of the auction for more than 50 years and made the Ash Flat Livestock Auction Company the most successful business in the city and one of the most successful cattle auctions in Arkansas and the south. Its success continues to generate substantial revenue for the community.

It’s estimated that 1.5 million head of livestock were sold through the facility which is still operated by his family. He was past president of the Sharp County Fair Board and manager of the fair, an organizer of the North Central

Arkansas District Fair, past vice president of the Arkansas Livestock Marketing Association and longtime officer with the Arkansas Cattlemen’s Association.

Nix believed strongly in the value of an education for the betterment of the individual and community. He encouraged his children to attend college by selling a calf and putting the proceeds into their college fund each year.

“My dad was a man of character, honesty and integrity,” son Mike Nix said. “He was someone our customers could count on. His word was his bond. More than anything that was the hallmark of his career, his legacy and why he is so respected in the cattle industry.”

In recognition of Billie and Alice Nix’s lifelong commitment to agriculture and others, their children established the Bill and Alice Nix Petting Zoo on the campus farm at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. ASU President Dr. Charles Welch called the petting zoo a “key component of the College of Agriculture’s efforts to provide more opportunities for the public to visit the campus and learn about agriculture.”

Nix was a compassionate man who was known for his generosity and helping those in need. Adam McClung, executive vice president of the Arkansas Cattlemen’s Association, said Nix’s contributions to the Arkansas cattle industry and economy of north-central Arkansas were “immeasurable.”

Nix also served on a number of other boards and associations including, Main Street Ash Flat, the Fulton County Water Association, Tri-County Cattlemen’s Association, River Area Chamber of Commerce and Sharp County Extension Council.

Bruce Oakley, El Paso Bruce Oakley built a business from a single dump truck from which he hauled lime fertilizer in 1968 to a diversified commodity trading, distribution and transportation company based in North Little Rock with $1.3 billion in sales in 2014. Oakley died in 2006 at the age of 70, but his son Dennis and family continue to grow the business he created with customers and suppliers around the world. The company now deals in trucking, barge traffic, fertilizer, river ports, grain merchandising, bagging services, river towing and fuel distribution, all areas that impact the agricultural community.

Oakley saw the potential of the McClellanRiver navigation system and opened his first port in North Little Rock in 1977. Today, Bruce Oakley, Inc. owns and operates 13 river ports and terminals in seven states, including five in Arkansas. It is one of the leading fertilizer distributors in the United States and operates a fleet of more than 650 trucks from four terminals that operate throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. Its grain division includes six elevators in Arkansas and markets more than 50 million bushels of Arkansas corn, rice, wheat, soybeans and grain sorghum annually.

Bruce Oakley was a visionary. He dropped out of school after the 10th grade and later joined the Navy. He eventually returned home to El Paso to raise cattle. After becoming frustrated he couldn’t purchase bulk fertilizer and lime for his pastures, he envisioned a way to do so for himself and his neighbors. Oakley combined the gift of knowing what people needed with the rare ability to build and manage an organization capable of consistently delivering on its promises. ”His legacy is the people who are still working for the company,” Dennis Oakley said about his father. “Many of them knew him and still do business the way he thought it should be done.”

Honesty and integrity are hallmarks of Bruce Oakley, Inc. Life lessons the late Bruce Oakley taught Dennis were, “Always do what you say you’re going to do,” and “Never bet the farm.”

John Ed Regenold, Blytheville John Ed Regenold began his career with the Armorel Planting Company in 1953. Under his leadership the company and its affiliates grew from 2,500 acres to more than 7,500. When an additional 2,500 acres the company rents and subleases are included, Regenold became responsible for the production of 10,000 acres in Mississippi County.

As company president, Regenold manages six affiliate companies, but he is first and foremost a farmer. Regenold managed the farming operation, the leasing and subleasing of land and marketing of crops for more than 30 years.

Cotton has always been a major crop in Mississippi County and until recently, the company focused on production of the commodity. At its peak, Armorel Planting Company ginned more than 25,000 acres. However, as a result of the decline in cotton prices Regenold determined they must shift their focus to growing soybeans, rice, wheat and corn.

He has dedicated his life to agriculture but is also committed to economic development, community service and his family. Regenold recently completed a 10-year term on the Arkansas State Highway Commission, where he spent two years as chairman. He also served on the Arkansas Economic Development Commission, on the Arkansas Agriculture Council, as a member of the St. Francis Levee Board, a member of the District 17 Drainage Board, the Mississippi County Quorum Court, and Northeastern College Foundation Board.

In 1968, Regenold was named the outstanding farmer for Mississippi County and was a pioneer in conservation practices. Because of this he was awarded a Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Accomplishments in conservation from the Mississippi County Soil Conservation District.

Regenold has also been civic minded and has been recognized for his contributions supporting young people, education and government. In 2005 he received the Citizen of the Year Award from the Blytheville Lions Club and in 2013 the Lifetime Greater Blytheville Award from the Greater Blytheville Chamber of Commerce.

He is honored to receive the recognition and join the men and women who are also members of the Hall of Fame.

A little goes a long way

W

hen talking with Keith Rinehart, you get the feeling “impossible” is not a commonly used word in his everyday vocabulary. His dedication and strong work ethic throughout his long career in agriculture make negative words like that of little use. Rinehart, now 75, retired and living in Hot Springs Village with his wife Jo Anne, is the quintessential American story of making a little go a long way.

Rinehart grew up on a small farm in McCaskill. As a senior in high school in 1957, he had slim chance of going to college due to his family’s financial situation. That

all changed when he was awarded a Romeo E. Short Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship program started in 1955 gets its name from the former Arkansas Farm Bureau president. It funds students majoring in agriculture at the University of Arkansas.

Rinehart says the scholarship was “extremely valuable” to him. It combined with working afternoons and Saturdays at the university farm feed mill, as well as other odd jobs he

found helped pay his way through school.

Rinehart says everything he did in college was related in some way to agriculture. He was a member of FarmHouse fraternity, in the ag student association and the animal science club among other organizations. “Being from a small town and a one-horse farm, I guess you could say the only culture I had was agriculture,” Rinehart said. He credits E. L. Ed Stephenson a Ph.D. professor in poultry

science as being a great mentor to him.

“He got students committed to going to school in the poultry science area.”

After earning a degree in general agriculture, Rinehart fulfilled his college ROTC obligation by spending two years in the Army, got married and then went back to Fayetteville to earn a master’s degree in poultry nutrition. Next was a Ph.D. at Purdue University focusing on nutrition and biochemistry. However, the reach of that small Romeo E. Short Memorial Scholarship, combined with his hard work, wasn’t complete in the life of Keith Rinehart yet.

Well educated and ready for the working world, he landed a job he stayed 10 years with at Ralston-Purina in St. Louis in meat bird research and nutrition. Next, was a five-year stint as director of nutrition and purchasing with Fieldale Corp. in Georgia. And, finally, he was lured to poultry giant Perdue Farms in Maryland by its iconic founder Frank Perdue. He spent most of his 18 years there as vice president of technical services overseeing poultry production, research, laboratories, nutrition and veterinarian services.

Throughout his career, many honors from professional and academic organizations came his way including the rare combination of being president, as well as being honored as a Fellow of the Poultry Science Association.

Rinehart is proud of his career and accomplishments, but there is a definite sense of humbleness in him. And it emerges through his continual referencing of that little Romeo E. Short Memorial Scholarship and the opportunity it gave him to get started on his career path, an opportunity he made sure not to waste.

“I met so many interesting people along the way,” Rinehart recalled about his career. “I never would have been able to do it if I hadn’t have been jumpstarted by the Short scholarship and headed off in that direction. It’s amazing. You needed something like that where I came from or you probably wouldn’t have ever gone to school.” 

Policy Update

Grain dealer protection for farmers An early warning system

O

ne of the most important bills passed by the 90th General Assembly was Act 601, the Arkansas Grain Dealers Act. Legislators and agriculture industry officials were concerned about the Turner Grain bankruptcy from the summer of 2014 and how it impacted grain farmers and others across the state. While wanting to develop legislation to register, license and regulate grain buyers, the legislators involved wanted to make sure it wouldn’t overregulate and keep entities from participating thus limiting farmer’s options for selling their grain.

With that working framework, Act 601 was crafted around licensing and registering grain buyers, developing administrative requirements, and giving additional tools to protect farmers. Any entity that buys grain but isn’t already covered under the federal or state warehouse laws will now have to register as a grain dealer. The Arkansas State Plant Board will be the state agency in charge of administering the program and conducting audits. The Board will develop rules and regulations including the possibility of requiring creditworthiness before issuing a license and the type of records to maintain.

The dealer will be subject to an annual audit (and additional audits if needed) as well as inspections. Penalties for not complying with Act 601 range from a class A misdemeanor to a Class D felony and fines up to $1,000 for each violation. Also, the Plant Board has authority of receivership in the case of a suspension of a dealer’s license which will help in the disposition of the assets under court supervision. The Plant Board will have the ability to order a dealer to cease and desist any activity in case of violations of the act.

For the farmers directly, two new tools will be at their disposal: a database and a slow-pay hotline. The Plant Board will

create a publicly accessible database which will list any dealer licensed under Act 601, as well as persons licensed under the Federal and State Warehouse acts. This will provide the farmer with options of who to sell grain to and to make sure they have some type of license and are registered. The slow-pay hotline will also be set up with the Plant Board. This hotline will allow the farmer to notify the board if a dealer is more than 30 days late on the dealer’s contractual obligation for payment of grain to the person. Also, a dealer shall provide

notice to each person from which the dealer purchases grain on the availability of the slow-pay hotline. The act does not address the contract itself – leaving that up to the dealer and the farmer to negotiate.

The State Plant Board will need some time to develop the rules and regulations, as well as have public hearings to gather input. The aim is to have it in place by midsummer and Farm Bureau will be helping the state get the information and hotline numbers out to our members and the rest of the agriculture community. 
