Star Ratings Explained

Each horse is given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race HHHHI Good chance of being placed HHHII By no means without a chance

HHIII At least one or two hold stronger claims HIIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope IIIII Can be given little or no chance

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating

You must be 18 or over to place a bet

You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet

LEAGUE RACE 8 HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 4)

Total prize fund £35000 ™ Owners Prize Money. 1st £14221, 2nd £7112, 3rd £3556, 4th £1778, 5th £889, 6th £445 (Penalty Value £18039) SS

LEADING COURSE TRAINER (20-25): M Appleby (75 wins from 595 runners, 13%) runs INTERVENTION TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): J Goldie (11 wins from 30 runners, 37%) runs ETERNAL SUNSHINE

WEIGHTWATCHER: INTERVENTION won off a handicap mark of 87, his rating is now down 8lb to 79. LONGEST TRAVELLER: ETERNAL SUNSHINE trained by J Goldie, Glasgow, 285 miles.

There wasn’t much between STANLEY SPENCER and Scarboroughwarning when they filled the places in the C&D handicap won by Crestofdistinction last month, and there probably won’t be much in it this time either Both have strong claims and marginal preference is for Stanley Spencer, who earns top marks for consistency The Thames Boatman scores highly in that regard, too, and he shouldn’t be far away, while likely pace angles Chuti Manika and Intervention are also fairly appealing.

The Racing League Joker Card

The Joker doubles the points won by the two horses representing the team in a given race. When played, the team receives double points in that given race, but it is not applied to individual jockey points.

Each manager will have the opportunity to play two Jokers during the 2025 competition. One Joker must be played at the team’s designated ‘home fixture’, the other Joker can be played in any of the other 42 races, where at least 12 horses are running (or 11 horses running at Wolverhampton).

The team manager will announce their intention to play a Joker in the Paddock, directly before the selected race This is done by placing a Joker card alongside the team name on the scoreboard in the Paddock.

HICKORY goes off the same mark as when a close third in a warm Ascot handicap on Saturday and looks sure to make a bold bid if coping with the quick turnaround.
