Star Ratings Explained

Each horse is given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race HHHHI Good chance of being placed HHHII By no means without a chance

HHIII At least one or two hold stronger claims HIIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope IIIII Can be given little or no chance

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this, your bet will not be accepted 3

Race preview from Weatherbys

Jonathan Portman with jockey Rob Hornby

It is an absolute pleasure to be sponsoring the Weatherbys Stallion Book Restricted Maiden Fillies’ Stakes at Wolverhampton this evening, with a competitive field of 13 two-year-olds set to line up. Richard Hughes trained the winner of this race two years ago and saddles Nando Parrado filly Kiss Cam here, who is a halfsister to a couple of winners. Although winless in four starts, she offered plenty of encouragement stepped up to a mile at Lingfield last time, having been badly hampered when keeping on, and is worth another roll of the dice at this sort of trip. Jonathan Portman won this race with Anywaythewindblows 12 months ago and relies on Kameko filly Turtle Star, who is well-related out of a Sea The Stars mare, but must show more than on her previous two starts, hiked markedly up in trip. Space Traveller filly Lunar Blossom cost €23,000 as a yearling and is related to some smart winners, including Listed scorer Leshlaa. William Knight’s runner has appeared pretty green thus far in her career, and the trainer reaches for firsttime cheekpieces here with Luke Morris back in the saddle. London Rose is a half-sister to Listedwinning two-year-old Wick Powell and should only continue to improve with experience for Ollie Pears, whilst Tommo’s Queen has been unable to get involved WEATHERBYS RACE PREVIEW

on her last two starts but a return to the form of her debut fourth at Redcar would give Michael & David Easterby’s Cracksman filly sound claims here.

Zorya is one of the most interesting debutants in this field. The mount of Silvestre De Sousa and hailing from the red-hot Marco Botti yard. The Mohaather filly is out a half-sister to Group 2 winner Wakanaka and Timeless Tale, who finished runner-up in a Listed race at Leopardstown this past weekend. Andrew Balding is enjoying a terrific season and saddles Garden Maze for Kingsclere Racing Club here. A daughter of Elm Park, the filly has plenty of stamina in the pedigree for this trip first time up, the dam a winner over two miles for the same connections. Iffraaj filly Uisce Domhain represents the Oli Rix stable and hails from the family of Ed Walker’s Sandringham Stakes winner Agrotera, whilst Billy Loughnane gets the leg up on Charlie Clover’s Queens Bandit, a half-sister to two-year-old winners Royal Charter and Al Hussar. Her dam is an unraced half-sister to Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner Queen’s Trust, and there is plenty to like about the pedigree.

A tricky opener to solve. Preference is for KISS CAM, who didn’t get a fair roll of the dice when it mattered in a Lingfield nursery just over 3 weeks ago and Richard Hughes’ filly can make amends back in maiden company. The market will no doubt be informative regarding the newcomers, with Zorya, Garden Maze and Queens Bandit making most appeal before the benefit of market clues

Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration. All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post.

HORSE AND JOCKEY WELFARE AT WOLVERHAMPTON Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider. Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface. On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage. Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse. The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site. We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital. It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary. Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse. We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today.
