Veterinary Care

Horse welfare is a priority at Wolverhampton. At every meeting there are two specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys. The second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse is given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race HHHHI Good chance of being placed HHHII By no means without a chance

HHIII At least one or two hold stronger claims HIIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope IIIII Can be given little or no chance

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this, your bet will not be accepted

KING’S PAVILION is on a very lenient mark on his best form and he shaped better than the result at Musselburgh last time after missing the break. The step up in trip should suit and he could end a two year losing run. Omany Amber won three times at Wolverhampton earlier in the year and she should make a bold bid back here. Tony Carroll seems to get the best out of lowly rated handicappers and HARBOUR PROJECT could be another to add to the list here. He was well backed and ran with credit here last month and could finally reward connections’ faith today. Boy George sets a good standard but he’s drawn wide and his win strike-rate is off-putting. A couple of interesting stable switchers add some intrigue to this sprint handicap. SON AND SANNIE won this race last year for his previous yard off a 2lb higher mark and should go close on his first run for a yard that do well with new recruits. Similar comments apply to the Mick Appleby stable and Night On Earth will be a danger on his yard debut. LONGEST TRAVELLER: LOCHNAVER trained by I Jardine, Carrutherstown, 205 miles. RACE SUMMARY

FOR LOVE OF LOUISE looks like a steady improver for her patient trainer and she should be able to get off the mark in this grade. She shaped encouragingly at Yarmouth last month and should have more to offer. Blazer Two ran well at Chelmsford last time and he looks the biggest threat up in trip. Eltham Palace isn’t out of things either. 1-2-3: 1.FOR LOVE OF LOUISE 2.BLAZER TWO 3.ELTHAM PALACE KEY colours

DAY TRADER remains a maiden following 15 attempts, but he is nevertheless appealing on his first start since rejoining Richard Hannon. Indeed, his latest effort over a mile at Lingfield was encouraging and both this step back up in trip and 2lb lower mark offer cause for optimism. Princess T is next on the list ahead of Beau Geste and Scarborough Castle, who scored over C&D last month. 1-2-3: 1.DAY TRADER (IRE) 2.PRINCESS T 3.BEAU GESTE (IRE) KEY colours
