Uttoxeter Racecard - Saturday 3rd May

Page 1

Welcome to Uttoxeter Racecourse for our Staffordshire Plate raceday and the jump season opener

Thank you to our sponsors today who are Tim Gosling, celebrating his 60th Birthday, 4 Oaks Group, and to Carlsberg Britvic and their guests.

Our feature race today is the “Carlsberg Britvic Staffordshire Plate Handicap Chase” which is a Class 2 race with an impressive £35,000 up for grabs and has attracted an impressive 16 declarations

As ever we have a variety of entertainment for you today. On the Centre Course for the children we have a fairground, inflatables, face painting and the Burton Albion Community Trust with their penalty shoot-out. Pop and Floss will also be there selling their delicious popcorn and candy floss.

In the Betting Hall you can challenge darting legend Bob “The limestone Cowboy Anderson” to a 9 dart challenge. Bob is a former world number 1 and world champion and he will also be promoting the Uttoxeter Darts Masters event held here at the racecourse on Friday October 10th Anyone who plays Bob today can use their ticket to claim a £5 discount in the office today for what is my favourite event of the year.

After racing you will be treated to our 80s concert, which is the first of our music events this year. Our next fixture on Saturday 17th May brings our themed show with Chris Moyles and his 90s hangover DJ set live after racing.

Today sees one of our longest serving members of staff, JP Jakes our head groundsman, work his last raceday before he moves onto to pastures new. JP started working here when he was 16 years old, however was a regular at the racecourse for many years prior when he used to help his Grandad Billy do various jobs for the racecourse. In the 9 years that he has worked here he never failed to impress us with his dedication, attitude and knowledge. He soon worked his way up to Head Groundsman, the youngest in this position in the group by some distance

He will be sorely missed and all of the team would like to thank him for his hard work over the years and we wish him the very best for the future

Thank you for visiting us today and we hope you have a great day.

Good Luck

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

ëëëëë Selected to win the race

ëëëëê Good chance of being placed

ëëëêê By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

ëëêêê Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

ëêêêê Can be given little or no chance

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances) The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Charlie Appleby has won 2 of the last 3 renewals and holds a strong hand once again, with William Buick opting to ride the very exciting Ruling Court over last season’s champion 2-y-o Shadow of Light

Not as competitive as the numbers suggest and this looks a good opportunity for IZZY’S GREY to gain his breakthrough victory. Fellow in-form maiden Star Vantage rates much the biggest threat with Portobello Girl and Les’s Jersey Royal appealing as the pick of the rest for minor honours.

COCO MADEMOISELLE is likely to be a warm order and rightly so, having improved when scoring with any amount in hand at Perth recently. She remains feasibly treated up 7lb and will prove a tough nut to crack. This step up in trip promises to suit Vintage Fizz and he is second choice, albeit only marginally as both Destroytheevidence and Pull Again Green are also shortlisted.
