Uttoxeter Racecard - Sunday 26th May

Page 1

Good afternoon and welcome to our “Dino Family Fun Day” featuring the Clarke Chase. Thank you to our sponsors today Turf Services, QuinnBet and the Clarke Family.

Our feature race today is the “The Clarke Chase” this is a Class 2 Handicap Steeple Chase with an impressive £40,000 prize pot and for the Sir Stanley and Lady Clarke Challenge Trophy The race has attracted a competitive field of ten for the 2024 renewal. Kerry Lee, who trained the winner of the race in 2022, ‘Demachine’, will be hoping to reclaim the trophy with ‘Eaton Collina’. The top-rated runner will be ‘Mackenberg’, rated 140, trained by Donald McCain Trainer Dan Skelton has had a winner at both Uttoxeter fixtures since the start of the new season and will be hoping ‘Mylesfromwicklow’ will continue that run of form.

Thank you once again to the Clarke family for their continuous support for this race

As well as the racing we have some great entertainment lined up for the little ones today. Head over to the Centre Course for all the action Our animatronic dinos and dino rangers will be performing in between the races alongside our inflatables, fair ground and face painting. We also have a treasure hunt for the kids. To enter, head over to the sweet shack in the Centre course to pick up a form.

Billy Brewer will also be here with the Burton Albion Community Trust, our charity partner. You can challenge him to a penalty kick shootout. They will also be collecting on behalf of BACT who do some great work in the community in Burton and Uttoxeter

Next up for us is our fixture on Thursday 6th June.

For our live music fans, our next music event is on Saturday 15th June which will see Scott Mills performing a 90s v 00s DJ set with special guest Gareth Gates. Certain to be another great party atmosphere here at the track.

Thank you once again for visiting us at Uttoxeter Racecourse I hope you all have an enjoyable day.

Good Luck

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

ëëëëë Selected to win the race

ëëëëê Good chance of being placed

ëëëêê By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

ëëêêê Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

ëêêêê Can be given little or no chance

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances) The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Memories of Sir Stanley and Lady Clarke

Sir Stanley Clarke was a well-known local self-made businessman and racing enthusiast, so when the lease for Uttoxeter Racecourse came up from East Staffordshire Council he was excited to take up the challenge. Acquiring the racecourse in 1988, Sir Stan saw an opportunity for the racecourse to become consumer-focused and a more commercial operation, maximising the number of people living in a 1-hour drive of the track.

Sir Stan invested in the racecourse, building new grandstands, improving facilities for racegoers, jockeys, trainers and horses, and very importantly prize money. Whilst modernising he was keen to preserve the charm and character by retaining some of the timber clad building, which we still have around the Parade Ring today.

His vision was to create “the finest country racecourse in the land” which we believe he achieved.

A stickler for standards Clarke had an eye for detail, whether it be cutting the grass, making sure the place was clean, improving signage, repainting and repairing buildings, racecourse staff meeting and greeting customers properly and providing proper customer service. This is very much the ethos that the team at Uttoxeter still live by today.

Sir Stan’s achievements at Uttoxeter, led him to develop Northern Racing who operated 10 racecourses across the country based on Uttoxeter’s blueprint, including Brighton, Bath, Chepstow, Fontwell Park, Hereford, Newcastle, Sedgefield, Uttoxeter and Yarmouth.

As they say, behind any good man was a great woman and Lady Clarke was just that. A great foil to her dynamic husband she was caring and supportive. She loved Uttoxeter Racecourse and her racehorses which she both owned and bred. We were fortunate to have Lady Clarke as our Patron and she was with us racing only a few days before she died in September 2015.

We welcome the Clarke family back to Uttoxeter and thank them once again for their support of their parents’ memorial race today.
