Throughout the year we have constantly being battling with tricky weather conditions to try our best to ensure we can get our race fixtures on. The build up to this meeting has been no exception with the remarkable amount of rain that has fallen in the last two weeks. So, I am delighted that today we welcome you for another ‘sell out’ New Years Eve Raceday. With a heavy heart, I must announce the passing of a racecourse friend and former employee Eric Coleman. Eric started working at the racecourse when he retired and moved to Uttoxeter. He worked on the track for over 25 years until he finally had to give his position up at the age of 97. He Celebrated his 100th Birthday with us here in June 2021. A day that I will long remember. Rest in Peace Eric. Looking ahead to an exciting 2024, planning has already begun on what will be an exciting schedule. Early highlights include Winter Ladies Day on Saturday 27th January & The Midlands Grand National on Saturday 16th March. Planning is in action for our music nights on Saturday 18th May, Saturday 15th June and our Ladies Day on Friday 26th July. Watch out for news in the New Year for some exciting announcements around these dates. Thank you to all our customers in 2023 and I wish you all a very Happy and Healthy New Year. STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: ‘‘‘‘‘ Selected to win the race. ‘‘‘‘• Good chance of being placed. ‘‘‘•• By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims. ‘‘••• Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. ‘•••• Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Bear Ghylls
Raceday preview from Weatherbys A small but select field go to post for this handicap hurdle, a Class 3 event staged over two miles and four furlongs, and all hold solid claims here in a competitive contest. Bear Ghylls has to give plenty of weight away to the field here from a top rating of 132, but he is no doubt the class angle in the race. An impressive novice hurdler for Nicky Martin in 2021, he finished fourth in the Ballymore behind Bob Olinger at the Cheltenham Festival. However, following injury struggles he was not seen on the track for almost 600 days and returned last term with a disappointing novice
Bear Ghylls has to give plenty of weight away to the field chase campaign. The eight-yearold reverted back to hurdles for a crack at the Pertemps but was well beaten in 16th after qualifying. He has been given a break and wind surgery since, and connections will be hoping for a return to form with a full season back over hurdles here from a much-reduced mark. The two course winners amongst this field are stablemates Benassi and Benign Dictator. The former was a ready winner of a maiden hurdle over the minimum trip here back in January and closed the campaign in fine style with an impressive ninelength success on handicap debut from a mark of 115 at Ffos Las. He disappointed upon return when pulled-up in the Silver Trophy, but that was a strong race that has worked out well and this is calmer waters. His second at Lingfield last time was more encouraging, the WEATHERBYS RACEDAY PREVIEW
winner has won again since, and he can get back on the right track for Olly Muprhy here from a 1lb lower mark. Benign Dictator won a bumper here back in 2021 and again showed a liking for the track when landing a maiden hurdle over the longer trip of almost three miles. The six-year-old reappeared this term with a handicap hurdle victory at Warwick over 2m5f from a mark of 117 and he is one who will appreciate the testing conditions and the real stamina test that ground presents. Sizing Pottsie was a Grade 2 winner as recently as March of 2022, landing the Webster Cup at Navan when with Jessica Harrington. However, since switching to David Pipe that following summer, he has got his head in front just once, on his first start for the new yard. As a result, though, his hurdles mark has slid all the way down to a tempting 121 and he showed glimmers of that old form when a close second at this track back in November. That was over the minimum trip though, and he hasn’t proved as effective over further throughout his career. The team of Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero have been in fine form this season and four-year-old French import Fricotin looks for his first victory for the yard since arriving in October. Although well beaten on both starts here in the UK, he is a winner over both hurdles and fences in France and will appreciate the testing conditions. Barry Brennan’s Crem Fresh kicked off this season in fine form, winning at Fakenham and just denied by a nose next time at Leicester but was very disappointing when pulled-up back at Fakenham last time. The mare must bounce back here against the boys but does get in here off a featherweight.
