Thank you for supporting us on this raceday, which has not been straightforward in its preparation, to say the least. The wet weather once again has made things terribly difficult for us at the racecourse. This has resulted in us having to lose our chase races and run with a full hurdle and bumper card. The team has worked tirelessly this week to give us every chance to make sure we can race today. Today, we will be holding a best dressed competition with some great prizes on offer. Please head to the Grandstand Bar where we will have our flower wall for you to take your picture and enter the competition. After the last race, our Robbie Williams tribute act (Tony Lewis) will entertain you with an hours performance in the Premier Bar. Access is available for all of our customers after the start of the last race. OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

GO TO WAR is bred to be suited by longer trips, but he certainly didn’t look slow when seeing off a subsequent winner in a C&D bumper on his debut, so he’s selected to make a successful start over hurdles for his red-hot stable. Fellow bumper winner Goodwin is another interesting hurdling newcomer, while Damarta remains with potential having still looked notably raw on his recent return at Newton Abbot.

Raceday preview from Weatherbys With the abandonment of the chases, today’s card is a little depleted and the staying handicap has been split into two divisions, with Weatherbys – in the name of Jumpers To Follow – sponsoring division one. Six go to post in the opening division of the 0-145 handicap hurdle, with one-time high-class chaser Espoir de Romay heading the weights for an in-form Kim Bailey.

The trainer has saddled three winners from his past eight runners – including an impressive display from Chianti Classico on chase debut at Chepstow – and his nineyear-old is returning on the back of a wind-operation. A heavy ground winner over fences, he has 4½ lengths to find with Hillview on their meeting over course-and-distance in May, but has a 4lbs pull to do so and ought to appreciate the softer ground. With his stable in fine form, it wouldn’t be a huge shock to see him put up a bold show under David Bass. too quickly for him and he recorded a course-and-distance success in June 2022, although the pick of his form has come on good ground. Any significant rain would further diminish his chance. Despite being nine-yearsold, Conkwell Legend, trained by Neil Mulholland is very lightly-raced with just eight runs to his name and will be trying 3m – or thereabouts – for the first time this afternoon. Twice a winner from six starts over hurdles, he ought to relish the prevailing conditions and given that his pedigree suggests that he could improve for stepping up in trip, he warrants plenty of respect under Richie McLernon. The mare Martha Brae represents Dan and Harry Skelton and is now 7lbs higher than when winning against her own sex at Hereford in March, after which she ran well when runner-up at Warwick. A consistent performer, most of her recent form has come on good ground. Rock Of Star is on a hat-trick and is still on the up, but races from 5lbs out of the handicap and Ballydisco was also in fine form when last seen, winning twice during the spring. Up another 5lbs, a career-best would be required, but he is unexposed as a stayer and can’t be ruled out.

On the 4th September 1963 - 60 years ago, Mick and Anne Bradshaw welcomed Howard Bradshaw into the world. Howard loved nothing more than getting suited and booted and attending Uttoxeter Races. He spent many a time with family and friends whether it be in the Grandstand, Centre Circle cooking up a steak or two or having a swifty in Hoops. His Wife and Friends are here today to celebrate an extraordinary man who would have been with us 60 years this year if it wasn’t for Duodenal Cancer which took him too soon 3 years ago. His legacy continues with money still raised for the charity GutsUK who fund research into digestive cancer and diseases.
