SECOND RACE 1.25 ABOUT TWO MILES (1M 7F 214YDS) FOR NOVICE FIVE YRS OLD AND UPWARDS

THE VIRGIN BET NOVICES’ HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 4) (GBB RACE) Total race value £10600 x Owners Prize Money. 1st £3839, 2nd £1920, 3rd £960, 4th £480, 5th £280, 6th £280, 7th £280. (Penalty Value £5010.32) Weights lowered 2lb.

RACE STATS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): P Hobbs (17 wins from 99 runners, 17%) runs LE LIGERIEN TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): D McCain (13 wins from 39 runners, 33%) runs HEARTBREAK KID LONGEST TRAVELLER: LE LIGERIEN trained by P Hobbs, Minehead, 161 miles.

RACE SUMMARY

OSCARS LEADER already looks as good at chasing as hurdling so Jennie Candlish’s charge is taken to supplement his recent success at Haydock on the back of just a 3lb rise in the weights. The main danger could be Heartbreak Kid, who belatedly opened his account in this sphere last time. Both Star Academy and Chazza departed early on their chase debuts so any market support may prove significant.

RACE SUMMARY

Course-winner HURRICANE ALI shaped as though the run would bring him on after an absence when sixth at Doncaster so looks the way to go here off a handy mark. Ulverston lacks a recent run but this C&D winner goes well fresh and is feared most, with Notre Pari and Chti Balko both on the shortlist too.

RACE SUMMARY

EATON MILLER won twice last season for Ryan Potter and made an encouraging reappearance when second at Taunton after 10 months off. He can build on that effort to return to winning ways here. His main danger could be the unexposed Breizh Alko who is now upped in trip back over fences with Brian Hughes booked to ride. Firenzo is also lightly raced and could bounce back in reapplied cheekpieces.

RACE SUMMARY

Thorough-stayer BOBMAHLEY has proven his capabilities in this grade from similar marks and seemingly has fewest questions to answer about his current level of ability or suitability for this sort of test, so he gets the verdict ahead of the lightly-raced Earcomesbob and On The Platform, who is worth another go at this trip granted less testing ground.

RACE SUMMARY

MICKYH seems to be getting better and another forceful ride should see him to good effect at this track, so he’s preferred to the consistent Flintara in what strikes as a weak race on paper. Sir Jack West can’t be ruled out and, on the off chance that High Grounds participates (entered at Bangor on Friday), he’d be a definite player.
