HORSE AND JOCKEY WELFARE AT SOUTHWELL

Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider. Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage. Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site. We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital

It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today. To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy, please visit our website www.southwell-racecourse.co.uk

KEY Owner Breeding Breeder Jockey Trainer Sponsor Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: S Br

Selected to win the race

Good chance of being placed

By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

Unlikely to win but not totally without hope Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICI A L BH A R ATINGS E X PL AINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances)

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating

For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Mr G. Malanga Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero, Malpas

Br James Reeves

TIMEFORMVIEWFirst piece of worthwhile form when third of 9 in a handicap chase here (20.4f, good) last month. 2lb lower back hurdling and wouldn’t be without an each-way chance if able to build on that in a first-time tongue strap. TFR###!! BHA94

Harry Fry, Corscombe

Br Mrs Margaret Platt Grosvenor Sport

TIMEFORMVIEWMade the frame all 3 starts over hurdles and positive start in this sphere when third in a 7-runner Fakenham handicap (21.2f, heavy) in December However, she was again too keen at Taunton last time and will need to settle better back hurdling with a tongue strap enlisted TFR###!! BHA94

Mr F. A. Clegg Alan Jones, Timberscombe

Br Con O’Keeffe

TIMEFORMVIEWRemains a maiden following 19 starts over hurdles but, to his credit, he has finished in the money on several occasions, including when returning from a wind op/3-month break on second start for this yard at Exeter (18.5f, good) High on the shortlist. TFR##### BHA91

Mr S Bromley & Mr C McSharry Fionn McSharry, Sheriff Hutton

Br Mrs Marion Condren

TIMEFORM VIEWWinless following half-a-dozen runs between the flags and form on the Flat was modest. On the upside, he has made the frame in each of his 3 qualifying runs in this sphere and, assuming he’s ready to roll following a break, he could have a part to play on this handicap debut TFR###!! BHA90

Gr m Great Pretender (IRE) - Sardagna (FR) Tristan Durrell (3)

Bullen-Smith & Faulks Dan Skelton, Alcester

Br Mr & Mrs Nigel Faulks Ladbrokes, The Air Ambulance Service (Warwickshire & Northamptonshire)

TIMEFORMVIEWRelated to some useful performers in these silks and she has performed with credit on each of her 3 completed starts in handicap company, finding just one too good at Ludlow (21.2f, good) last time. Likely to be in the thick of things once again. TFR####! BHA87

TIMEFORMVIEWFailed to meet expectations on sole bumper outing and well held all 4 starts over hurdles. However, wouldn’t be the first from this yard (and certainly not in these famous silks) to take a big step forward on this handicap debut One to note in the betting. TFR###!! BHA80

TIMEFORMVIEWShowed glimmers of ability in maiden/novice company and bettered his handicap debut effort when a creditable third in a 10-runner contest at Sedgefield (19.8f, heavy) in March. Each-way chance if able to build on that now that he encounters faster ground TFR###!! BHA80
