S
Unlikely to win but not totally without hope Can be given little or no chance.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances)
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating
For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Weatherbys are delighted to be sponsoring no fewer than five of today’s sevenraces, startingwithracetwoonthe card, a novices’ handicap chase over an extended3m,inwhichfivegotopost.
Improving chaser Swapped, formerly trained by Nicky Henderson and arriving here on a four-timer (last two wins coming at this track), heads the weights, whilst Tango Echo Charlie made a successfuldebutoverfencesatFontwell. Where he shaped like stepping back up intripwouldsuit.TheDanSkelton-trained Snipeistheonlychasingdebutantinthe field.
Swapped looks to complete the four-timer but will have to defy top-weight.
Last month’s easy course-and-distance winnerMysticMantopstheweightsforthe Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Handicap Chase and given how comfortably he won, an 11lb rise might not prevent the six-year-old from following up, for young trainerHarryDerham.BenBromleyagain takes off 5lb and conditions remain in his favour. The lightly-raced six-yearold is 2-2 over fences here at Southwell, incidentally.

Hurdle runner-up L’Astroboy, when last seen. He changed hands for £70,000 in May and makes his first start for new owner, Mrs Carolyn Kendrick, and will be partneredbyherson,Max.
The penultimate race – the weatherbysshop.co.uk Handicap Hurdle, over the minimum trip – has attracted eight runners, including the Laura Morgan-trained Socialist Agenda, who has been in action on the Flat during the summer. He won the Scottish County Hurdle in February 2022 and is now 6lbs lower, so would be a threat to all if recapturing his old form, whilst Sergeant Wilsonsurelyhasmoretooffer, beingjust fiveandhavinghadonlythesevenstarts overhurdles.
He looked to be a really bright prospect when winning a Taunton bumper some 19 months ago and as a result, was duly purchased by Simon Munir and Isaac Souede.Heprogressedsteadilyinhisfirst season over hurdles and was successful at Fakenham, when sporting a firsttime hood. A free-going individual, this sharp track should suit and he could win a handicap or two this season, once learning to relax a little more through his races. He remains full of potential and hails from the in-form stable of Nigel Twiston-Davies,whosaddledfivewinners between Wednesday and Saturday last week.
The card concludes with a conditional jockeys’ contest over an extended 3m, which looks to be a thoroughly competitiveaffair.
