Allen DavisFormer National Hunt Jockey

The son of a Rufford colliery miner, Allen Davis spent his entire career in racing working for farmer Walter Buxton, joining him at Coneygree Farm, Hoveringham, Nottinghamshire aged 17 in 1948. He rode his first winner, aged 19 for Buxton on the 6 year old mare Alciston at Market Rasen on Easter Monday, 10th April 1950, by when Davis was Buxton’s head lad (in the words of the Nottingham Evening Post ‘Alan Davis must be the youngest head lad in charge of a racing stable in Britain’). Buxton moved to Lowdham Lodge, Lowdham, Nottinghamshire in 1952. Allen Davis rode a total of 16 winners from 1950 to 1966. 8 of these winners were on a remarkable gelding, ‘Cheera’ who won 10 hurdle races, racing until he was 16 in 1971.

‘Cheera’ (nicknamed ‘Herbert’ in the yard) was bred by Lord Willoughby de Broke, owned by Mr. L E Rowson and trained by Walter Buxton. Davis first won on him at Wolverhampton in February 1960 and the last winner he rode was on ‘Cheera’ at Southwell in March 1966. His last ride was at Doncaster in January 1977, one month short of his 46th birthday.

Allen Davis also rode for permit trainer Frank Coton whose yard was nearby at Epperstone, Nottinghamshire. Davis finally left Walter Buxton in 1978 after working for him for 30 years.

Allen Richard Davis was born on 25th February 1931 and died peacefully on 16th January 2023.

LEADING COURSE TRAINER (17-22): D Skelton (49 wins from 224 runners, 22%) runs RICHHILL TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): N Henderson (7 wins from 33 runners, 21%) runs AMRONS SAGE LONGEST TRAVELLER: THANKSFORTHEHELP trained by D Pipe, Wellington, 211 miles.

THANKSFORTHEHELP shaped better than the result in the Pertemps Final at Cheltenham last month, unable to sustain his effort, and he can resume winning ways back in novice company. The 6-y-o can see off the challenge of the improving Amrons Sage, while Gentle Frank could also have further progress to come
