OFFICI A L BH A R ATINGS E X PL AINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances)
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating
For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

A PREVIEW OF TODAY’S FOUR RACES SPONSORED BY WEATHERBYS
Weatherbys sponsor four of today’s seven races, starting with the Paul Ferguson’s Jumpers To Follow Novices’ Handicap Chase, a 0-120 contest over an extended 3m. As you would expect, trainer Nicky Henderson is well-represented in this year’s edition of Jumpers To Follow published less than a fortnight ago and he runs Farouk de Cheneau in this class 4 event. Although he has yet to win a race since arriving from France, the seven-year-old finished runner-up on his first start over fences at Bangor last month and that form has worked out well, with the winner and fourth having won since.
He should go well for the popular Owners Group, whilst the weights are headed by the consistent and much more-experienced Judge Earle, who represents Peter and Sean Bowen. The 10-year-old has half-a-length to find with Kinondo Kwetu from their recent meeting at Uttoxeter and the longer trip should certainly help Sam England’s six-year-old is open to greater improvement, however, having had just the two chase starts, winning both.
The Tom George-trained Bannister had John Mackie’s Hurricane Ali back in third when winning another Weatherbys-sponsored contest at Worcester five weeks ago and the pair re-oppose in the Weatherbys Bettrends Handicap Hurdle The former is a course-and-distance winner, who has been in fine form this summer and appreciates a sharp track and decent ground. That piece of form hasn’t exactly worked out, so the grey will need to take another step forward, if he is to make it three wins from four starts since the 4th July Dan Skelton’s Ridgeway has had just four starts over hurdles and won with ease on his hurdling debut at Doncaster in late-January Only fourth when last seen, at this track in April, he should appreciate coming back in distance and given how well he won first time up last season, perhaps this is the time to catch him. Owners Foxtrot Racing actually run two in the race, with Galata Bridge representing the Dr Richard Newland stable He drops in class, having contested Market Rasen’s Summer Hurdle and another class 2 up at Perth on his previous two starts.
A wide-margin winner at Warwick just a week ago, Dindin is able to run off the same mark in the Weatherbys nhstallions.co.uk Handicap Chase, as that Warwick race was for conditional jockeys only Philip Armson keeps the ride aboard David Pipe’s nine-year-old, who again wears blinkers and a tongue-strap That was his first success in 14 starts in England, so it will be interesting to see if he can reproduce a similar effort on the back of a quick turnaround.
Foxtrot and Dr Richard Newland also team up in the Weatherbys Stallion Book Handicap Hurdle, with Tiger Orchid set to take his chance. He won a maiden hurdle over course-and-distance in May beating just one rival but has since been well-beaten in a couple of handicaps. Another course-and-distance winner is City Derby, who won a handicap when last seen in April. Fergal O’Brien’s six-year-old is 4lbs higher for this first start in more than five months.
Local trainer Laura Morgan runs Supreme Yeats and he has been off for over a year Runner-up in an Irish Point, he looked promising when fourth in a Musselburgh bumper in January 2021 and remains very lightly-raced. It will be interesting to see how he fares on this return to action and whether or not the market speaks in his favour beforehand.
Best of luck, Paul Paul Ferguson Weatherbys

No child should suffer abuse. But too many children are struggling alone with fear, violence, or neglect. We know that half a million children a year suffer abuse in the UK.
This must change. At home, in school, or online, every child deserves to be safe and happy. We have shattered the silence around child abuse, and with your support, we can protect children today and prevent abuse tomorrow.
Every day, our helplines and frontline staff are giving hope to children who feel desperate or invisible. Listening to their worries and fears, we act immediately whenever a child is in danger. And by changing the law and speaking out about threats to children, we can stop abuse before it starts.
The NSPCC helps millions of children through Childline and our school visits. We are in every local community, and we will keep fighting for children whatever the future brings.
It is only thanks to your support that we can be there for every child, whenever and wherever they need us. In the face of new challenges, you are helping us create a safer world around them. Together we can change children’s lives.
Together we can stop abuse.
