WELCOME TO SOUTHWELL

Welcome to this All-Weather Championship Fixture, part of the All-Weather Championships which culminate at Newcastle Racecourse on Good Friday this year. Thank to sponsors, Betway, Mansionbet and Coral for their generosity in sponsoring all the races in the during Championships. We are now one enclosure so please feel free to use the space on the ground and first floors of the Grandstand. To manage your expectations, with small crowds anticipated this time of year not all of the Food and Drink outlets will be open at all times. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact either myself, one of the team around the course or the Racecourse Office. We hope you enjoy the competitive racing and friendly nature of our Racecourse. Good luck. MARK CLAYTON EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Southwell Racecourse is part of Arena Racing Company which includes; Bath, Brighton, Chepstow, Doncaster, Ffos Las, Fontwell Park, Great Yarmouth, Hereford, Lingfield Park, Newcastle, Royal Windsor, Sedgefield, Uttoxeter, Wolverhampton and Worcester racecourses.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABANDONMENT

BADGES & TRANSFERS

If badges or tickets are lost they will unfortunately not be replaced. Transfers between enclosures are available at the entrances to the enclosures.

BARBEQUES

We regret that barbeques are not permitted on this racecourse due to safety regulations. Communications/Mobile Phones Mobile telephones, laptops, tablets and any other electronic devices may not be used on the racecourse for betting purposes. Cellular phones may be used for other purposes but only in the areas behind the stands and away from designated betting areas. FAILURE TO COMPLY COULD RESULT IN YOUR REMOVAL FROM THE PREMISES AS PER OUR TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

DOGS

Racegoers are not permitted to bring dogs into any enclosure. In car parks dogs must be kept on leads at all times. During hot weather it should be remembered that Police and RSPCA officials reserve the right to force entry into any vehicle to release an animal if suffering.

DRESS CODE

No T Shirts, casual shorts or trainers are permitted in the Premier Enclosure. Shirts must be worn at all times in all enclosures.

FOOD & DRINK

Although alcohol is not permitted to be brought onto the Racecourse, and in some cases bags will be searched at the entrances, picnics are permitted on the lawn adjacent to the track itself but not in any other areas. You are requested not to take glass bottles and glasses outside of the bars, hospitality and restaurant areas.

GENERAL

Although everyone is welcome at Southwell, we do reserve the right, in extreme circumstances, either to refuse admission or to eject any person from the racecourse.

HORSERACE BETTING LEV Y BOARD

Press and Official Photographers’ attention is drawn to the current British Horseracing Authority Instructions.

RACE CONDITIONS

Today’s race conditions can be found on page 31 of this racecard.

SAFETY

In the interests of public safety all visitors to the racecourse must follow the directions of the Safety Stewards on the Stands and the Raceday Staff throughout the racecourse. Please do not leave bags or your possessions unattended at any time as this could cause a security alert. Please be aware that horses can be unpredictable, therefore care and attention is necessary within the vicinity of the horses. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL DRINK AND/OR GLASSES BE ALLOWED ON TO GRANDSTANDS, VIEWING AREAS IN FRONT OF GRANDSTANDS OR AROUND THE PERIMETER OF THE PARADE RING. RACEGOERS DISREGARDING THIS REGULATION OR BEHAVING IN A DISORDERLY MANNER WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE RACECOURSE.

SMOKING

Smoking is not permitted inside any buildings but is permitted in all outdoor areas, this includes the use of all electronic cigarettes that omit vapour.

VETERINARY CARE

Horse welfare is a priority at Southwell. At every meeting there are two specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys. The second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

HAVE A QUESTION? REQUIRE SOME ASSISTANCE? OUR RACEDAY TEAM ARE HERE TO HELP!

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: ‘‘‘‘‘ Selected to win the race. ‘‘••• Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. ‘‘‘‘• Good chance of being placed. ‘•••• Can be given little or no chance. ‘‘‘•• By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

OF O F F ICI I C I A L BH BH A R A AT T I NG N G S E X PL PL A I N E D The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

LONGEST TRAVELLER: ABERAMA GOLD trained by K Dalgleish, Carluke, 268 miles. RACE SUMMARY Quite a useful sprint. The return to 6f looks sure to help ZARZYNI who can confirm the promise of his excellent second over the minimum trip here last month. The lightly-raced Tommy de Vito was back from an absence with a bang when scoring at Kempton in the autumn and could have more to come so he’s feared most.
